The Chesapeake Bay Bridge (also known locally as the Bay Bridge) is a major dual-span bridge in the U.S. state of Maryland. Spanning the Chesapeake Bay, it connects the state's rural Eastern Shore region with the urban Western Shore, between Stevensville and the capital city of Annapolis. The original span, opened in 1952 and with a length of 4.3 miles (6.9 km), was the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure. The parallel span was added in 1973. The bridge is officially named the Gov. William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge after William Preston Lane Jr. who, as the 52nd Governor of Maryland, initiated its construction in the late 1940s finally after decades of political indecision and public controversy.
The bridge is part of U.S. Route 50 (US 50) and US 301, and serves as a vital link in both routes. As part of cross-country US 50, it connects the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area with Ocean City, Maryland, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and other coastal tourist resort destinations. As part of US 301, it serves as part of an alternative route for Interstate 95 travelers, between northern Delaware and the Washington, D.C., area. Because of this linkage, the bridge is busy and has become known as a point of traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours and summer months.
The bridge's role in transportation was filled by ferries prior to the first span's construction. An annual 10K run across the bridge has been organized on-and-off since 1975. The bridge's economic impact on the areas it connects has been significant, with both Queen Anne's County and Ocean City expanding significantly since the bridge's construction. Future expansion of the bridge has been discussed since 2004, with a task force being formed to investigate the possibility of building a third span.
Because of similar names, it is often confused with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a bridge-tunnel linking the Eastern Shore of Virginia with the Hampton Roads region and the rest of Virginia.
Living in AA County I have travelled this bridge many many times. The bridge isn't scary but the way people drive is terrifying.

this is a concearn but it dose not scare me but if your smart stay in the right lane eastbound and you will never have to deal with the 2 way traffic when i started riding this bridge it was only one bridge

For this video, the driver should have taken the trip on a windy day so people could see the sway in the bridge which makes it so scary. It's been years since I was on this bridge. They only had fencing at the time so you could see down into the bay, it was pouring down raining and windy so the bridge was doing it's swaying thing, one lane east and one lane west, and I had a jackass driving a semi on my bumper the whole time. Swore I'd never get on that bridge again.

I remember as a kid watching this bridge being built from the ferry that you previously had to use to cross the Chesapeake. Yes, I am that old.
The 301 bridge had me puckering up! But this bridge is a cakewalk. Except in high winds.

And I'm even older than You. They were not even building the bridge in 1956 when I used to drive from Boston to Norfolk Va. & had to use the Kiptopeke ferry to cross the bay to get to My ship at the Naval Base in Norfolk.

They stopped the ferry system in the middle of the 1970s and I was like age 3 or 4 and my parents took us out to the last ferry ride and my aunt who lives on Kent island pick us open and we took the last ferry ride back and think they should offer it back to help improve bay bridge traffic in the summer. Because of summer traffic on Fridays I never go visit my mom or my family in Kent island because of that mess.
I cross the Bridge on weekends, normally. It only gets scary for me during inclement weather. High winds can be terrifying on the Bay Bridge, but they'll close the Bridge when the winds reach a certain mph. It's not too pleasant when traffic has completely stopped and you're at the top feeling the Bridge sway.
It is so scary for some that there is an escort service that will drive your car over the bridge for you. There is even a special pullover area before the toll booths where you can wait for your escort. I know a guy that use to do that and he said he'd typically make 200 bucks a day just driving people over the bridge.
Is that Escort Service for the Bay Bridge still a thing, even after the toll plaza has been removed?

A colleague just told me about that service today as I narrated my ordeal of crossing the bridge twice yesterday. Yesterday was my 8th time of crossing that bridge but you know what, I still feel nervous; I have driven on bridges in Pittsburg but Bay bridge in MD is at another level 😆
@@juliuscaeser9834 I know a person that won't go over the bridge even if someone else is driving. They literally will added hundreds of miles of driving, up through MD and down Delaware, to avoid taking the bridge on the way to Ocean City.
As someone who has gone across this bridge countless times in my life (my mother and I used to visit my grandparents on the eastern shore every week), I find this bridge to be incredibly beautiful during the day, but it can be scary as hell when going over it at night. It's super dark up there, and combined with that rumbling, it can be pretty nerve-wracking.
Scariest thing about it is still the traffic though.

I've driven across this bridge once in my life. I'm from los Angeles. My step mom lived in crofton MD. I went to her graduation in 2012. We took a road trip to Annapolis and Chesapeake bay. My aunt had her eyes closed the whole time we went across and back. Its just such a massive bridge.
It doesn't seem that scary now, but 30 years ago when I drove over it it seemed a lot scarier. I remember it having a steeper incline than in the video, but maybe that is just my own memory. The Cooper River and Wando River bridges on I-526 in Charleston seem a lot scarier. Also after the Bay Bridge as I recall, every little town you go through you better heed the speed limits. That area used to be full of speed traps in every little town on the way to the shore.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area and drove over the San Mateo bridge dozens of times. That bridge is similar in that it just has the concrete barrier walls to prevent a fall, although it travels near the water level for a much longer distance before arching over the water. I can't say that watching this scares me, although I can say from having driven the Chesapeake Bridge in the last year that it was definitely not in my top ten list of experiences I want to repeat often.

Living in the Delmarva region, 15 mins from Salisbury and 40 from Ocean City. Having driven Rt 50 a million times since 2006, there aren’t really any speed traps. If you’re not going 80 on 50 from Salisbury to OC, you’re going too slow. Really the only place to watch out is going through Cambridge MD. Otherwise, it’s free for all. Rt 13 from Seaford to Salisbury is the same way. You can go 100mph and people still pass you. Delaware State Police for some reason don’t patrol that 16 mile stretch at all.
@@alexandertebo4011 Yep. I got a Ticket entering Cambride. 69 in a 35. I lived 100 miles away and guess the Cop didn't think I would come all the way back to come to Court. I did. The Cop didnt. Ticket Dismissed.

I have driven it often with traffic coming opposite direction on same side of bridge. That is another level of concentration.

I noticed this happens frequently after 8pm October through April when they frequently close the West Bound Bridge for evening construction. I met a bunch of the construction workers that work underneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at night. They go to the Ram's Head in Stevensville Maryland during break talk about having no fear 👍😎👍
When you cross this bridge, you feel the weight of all the heavy traffic from DC and Baltimore lift right off...until you get to Ocean City and Rehoboth.
When you get across the bridge heading to Ocean city, its like leaving Hell, after driving on I-95.
Scariest for me was the Chicago Skyway during its renovation in Summer '04: Single narrow lane. If you want scary, try the Mackinac Bridge during white cap winds.

I grew up in Annapolis, it was always a treat for me as a kid and adult to travel on this bridge. Having said that, on inclement days it can be a bit more nerve racking driving on it.
Great video! I would argue the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge carrying MD4 across the Patuxent River in Solomons/California Maryland is also a contender for scariest bridge. Take the Eastbound Span of the Bay Bridge as a starting point, reverse the left lane's direction, double the gradient, then get rid of everything that isn't a jersey wall.😁

From a boat if your there long enough you will see pieces of concrete fall into the water from the TJ bridge in Solomons

I remember using this bridge once, over 30 years ago when we visited Annapolis. My wife still occasionally mentions how much she disliked it.
Definitely the scariest bridge ive ever seen! I drove over some big ones in Pennsylvania and upstate New York and also over the Mississippi but this tops them all!

Most vivid experience when I was 12 (1968) and only one bridge (today's eastbound) with my grandfather at the wheel. Traveling toward NJ and seeing that that huge hump of a span out in the middle was frightening, worse with oncoming traffic and my grandfather pointing left and right which equals taking his eyes off the road. Also they had railing on the sides, not todays jersey dividers. Years later I had another experience on a Greyhound bus, this time I felt like we were floating over it, as you only see water.
Went over this bridge on a school bus once; it was so foggy we couldn’t see anything. Was definitely an interesting experience as most of the other kids were freaking out.
Love this bridge, but you didn't show the water down below!!! There is an annual Bay Bridge walk across it that's really a great 3 mile workout!
I travel this way for work most every Wednesday and as of today 8/9/22 have been over it 893 times! ( yes, I keep track!😁) Its always a highlight of the week for me as I love this area.

I'm from the Syracuse,NY area, I had to cross that bridge pulling a 5th wheel camper to work at the nuclear plant "Calvert Cliffs". Yes. that bridge scared me! As a journeyman carpenter, i could only imagine that this bridge was built out of a 1950's erector set.

I’ve been on this bridge only once when we were staying in Annapolis and we were driving to Rehoboth Beach, DE. This bridge didn’t scare me at all though, I can understand the people who are terrified of big bridges being a little scared but big bridges don’t tend to scare me.
I get on floor of car when going over this bridge, it is so frightening!

The annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge run/walk is coming up on Sunday, November, 13, 2022. It's a fantastic walking experience (I've never participated in the run) that I've enjoyed many times over the years starting in the early 1980's.
Edit: FYI The walk/run is held on the eastbound span (as seen in this video) while it's closed to vehicular traffic.
I really enjoyed the walk, I did it many times. You realize that the bridge is designed to sway a little in the wind, and different sections sway with different wind speeds. It is an inch or two in a light breeze, and on one windy day it was about a foot! You probably don't notice while driving.

Done the run once when it wasn’t so complicated and the walk maybe a dozen times. My question is, why the middle of November? Stupid time of year. Unfortunate that the run was taken away from the Annapolis Striders and given to some commercial racing outfit.

I have driven both, but I have only walked across one - The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland. Are you saying that I somehow made a wrong turn on my way to walk the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland (on several occasions) and ended up in Virginia walking the Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel by mistake? Do you even think about what you're saying before posting it for the world to see?
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway and the I-10 bridge in New Orleans are in this class, as is one on Queen Elizabeth Way over Lake Ontario on the way to Toronto. My sister would not drive this bridge after her first time. My mother wouldn't drive it at all. So, every time I would visit DC, I was recruited to cross it to assure safe passage to Rehoboth Beach. The many 18-and-20-foot-wide bridges I drove over the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers were good training grounds.

Here's one for the faint of hearts. In my very first rookie year of driving a tractor trailer, I was dispatched on a load going to Hurlock, Md.(45,000 lbs plus on trailer) So I left late on a Sunday evening, raining moderately as the skies darkened. As I got close to the bridge, mind you with rainy weather after passing through Annapolis,
Md. ( US Rt 50 East/ West ) Approaced the bridge rainy, now heavy, thick fog as I go up on the grade, after the toll booth. Once to the top which I realized probably near center span. Can't see NOTHING, totally blind crawling until getting down the other side, shaking scared as a cat like hell. The only way I had to see the road was to watch the edge of the deck, little ass gaurdrails in place to stay on the bridge not driving off it. The next morning, delivered the load in Hurlock, Md. after sleeping and calming down my nerves. Sunny day the next day after making my delivery, came back across THAT bridge again. I realized in the daylight, cleared skies the brutal truth and terror of the bridge crossing the bay. Greatful to live and tell about it. Yes, it's the scariest bridge ANYWHERE at least in my opinion here in the East....

In the late 80's I lived in Annapolis and worked in Greenbelt, MD. So I crossed the Bay Bridge many times going over to Cape Henelopene and Rehoboth Beach. Hated Friday afternoons trying to get home to Annapolis from Greenbelt with all the beach bound traffic from NoVa and the DMV.
This bridge is pretty nice to drive across for me because of the height. Drive across it going east at sunrise and its pretty cool. Now the old 301 bridge was the one that really scared people. It was very high, narrow and the traffic moved fast.

I used to drive on this bridge to go to my trailer/beach house that I owned in Delaware especially on weekends I would go there. Sometimes I miss having that vacation home but unfortunately I had no choice but to sell it. The first time I drove on that bridge it never scared me at all. As a matter of fact my mom actually told me that one of my ancestors actually helped build that bridge.

I grew up 10 minutes from this bridge and as an adult I actually had a job for 5 years on the other side of the bridge and drove thru sunny days, high winds days, rain and hail and of course snow. I have family that lives on the Queen Anne's county side. I even been stuck in traffic for people who were starting their vacations on their way to Ocean City Maryland and I been stuck in traffic for bridge jumpers who did it for fun and suicide. I even have walked this bridge in 1995 and 1997 yet because of bridge work and over population I don't think that they allow bridge walks anymore. Yet I never considered this bridge scary. I been on the largest bridge in the southern parts of this great country in Louisiana called Pontchartrain bridge which ever 7 miles has opened areas for cars to pull over on and that bridge is over 20 miles long. I also been on a bridge outside Sleepy Hollow New York that actually had signs everywhere on that bridge saying LIFE IS WORTH LIVING to stop suicide jumpers. Yet one of the scariest bridges I ever drove over is the tiniest metal bridge connecting Anne Arundel county and Prince Georges in Maryland where this tiny bridge only has 1 lane and for safety you have to drive only 10 mph and only 1 car at a time and you have too watch out at either side to avoid head on collisions and for me that's scary bridge in Maryland and it's been shut down for reconstruction for years now. The other scary bridge I been on was a bridge in Georgia and made of wood and in the movie Green Fried Tomatoes and it still blows my mind that a wooden bridge holds 1 ton cars and trucks. Yet most of the scariest bridges are in south American and Asia. Yet you think that the Bay bridge connecting A.A. county and Queens Anne county is scary is laughable

I worked on this bridge when resurfacing was being done on the east bound lanes,i actually fell through in between the girders when we were about 60 ft up,god wzs watching over me that day because there was many pieces of rebar sticking up out ot the water ,but i escaped any injury because i could have been skewed,i just ended up soaking wet,went home got dry clothes on and went back to work,i was 23 then
I love the Bay Bridge. It signals vacation time for me! I feel once I’m over the bridge driving from Baltimore I’m so much closer to the beach!

I've been over that bridge many times.
The scarey part is some drivers on the bridge.
And, one time it was so foggy u could hardly see in front of me and as I was driving on it - Adele's Rolling In The Deep - was playing on my radio.
I will never forget that.
It's the combination of things that make this scary. It's tall and narrow. It's exposed. It's heavily traveled. It's almost 5 miles across. One end is steep and curved. The speed limit varies across the bridge.
Traffic patterns are frequently changed to accommodate traffic volume and maintenance. Traffic is extremely heavy at rush hour during the week. In the warmer months, weekend traffic jams can be hours long and stretch for miles. The lack of alternate routes makes this inevitable. The lanes can be shifted to route up to four lanes in one direction at a time, meaning that you will encounter two-way traffic on either span. Also, one span will close for maintenance at night.
Next, the older span in the video has smaller lanes, but features concrete barriers on the sides. The newer three lane span has wider lanes, but also has "open" metal railings on the sides, allowing for an spectacular view down to the waters of the bay. This is especially exciting to view when driving westbound in the left lane as you descend on the curving surface toward the land.
And let's not forget about the weather. Summer storms can form quickly and will move quickly over the open water, especially in the evenings. Besides, that, winds will naturally funnel up or down the bay, making a crossing into an adventure. I remember crossings where you could feel the bridge swaying in the wind.
Drove over it a few years ago, I loved it, my wife hated; she hates bridges. Stopped in Stevenson for some crab cakes, made her happier. Not scary at all to me.
Been working on the other span of the bridge for about a year and a half. I run a crane up there at nighttime and set new signal structures. Definitely took me some time to get used to it.
I can barely handle watching the video let alone actually drive it! And I used to drive over bridges all the time, no problem. I don’t know why I can’t now.😫

I'm from Baltimore, and have travelled over this bridge many times going to Ocean City and to visit friends in Delaware. I never thought it was scary to drive over, but never had the nerve to do the walk over it!
The westbound side of the bridge is scarier; especially the downhill curve into Annapolis. When it is raining it gets slick and can get rather white-knucklee if there is two-way traffic on that span.
I’ve been across this bridge so many times, living in Northern Virginia, and traveling to Ocean City, not to mention other parts on the Eastern shore for work. My only regret is, I haven’t had the opportunity to do it on my motorcycle yet!
Like I said before, this is one of America's Greatest Bridges next to the one in Virginia, the George Washington Memorial Bridge, and other famous beidges.

My first time was pretty awkward because nobody warned me,i traveled on BayRunner shuttle from BWI, felt like it took forever to get to the other side.
Then at other times, the bridge that was one way each side,turn into a two the next day...strange

I'm not afraid of that one either.
Driven over this bridge many times over the last 30 years, heading down to Lewes, DE. It can get a bit scary, if you are driving in really bad weather (they do close it down periodically due to high winds). The only other time it can get scary, is when you drive east bound on the west bound span -- yes, they do reverse one lane on the west bound side during the summer months (Fridays and Saturdays), to relieve beach travel congestion. Now, if you want to talk scary, then you should have driven over the old Goethals Bridge going from New Jersey to Staten Island (NYC). That was scary. Note: It was torn down a few years ago.

Definitely more scary when the other part of the bridge shut down so all traffic is on one bridge going back-and-forth
Not sure if they still do it, but they used to close off the bridge for pedestrians once a year. You would take a bus from Annapolis to the Queen Anne’s side and walk back. I did it once in the late 80s. It was really a cool experience.

The eastbound older bridge has simlar design ques from the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. The suspension span has a simlar style to the SFOB span. The cantilever span is similar as well to the old eastern span of the SFOB minus being a double deck.

I can say that has a truck driver, this was the scariest bridge in the country for me personally. The worst part was that there the tunnel has an alternative. Neither one was pleasant, but if I end up in the water in the tunnel there is no chance of survival, so I took the bridge. Regretted it every time.
It's been about 5 years since I've driven it in a semi, and from what I remember is that those barriers just didn't even like they were there. Sitting so high did not make it a fun time

It's a smooth straight bridge that's a pleasant drive. If you can't go over it, you can't go over any bridge.

I drove over this bridge back in 2019. Not scary at all. It's a beautiful bridge in a beautiful area. I am curious as to why you find it scary.
I think they have added the concrete guard rails since I drove over it. Without those, even the slightest amount of wind would pull on your vehicle.

It wasn’t scary to me myself but I’ve seen several videos and read about a lot of people considering it scary.
This bridge always makes me nervous. I’m glad that I don’t have to drive to the eastern shore very often.
Drove it to work for 2 years straight. It's scary to me when the storms come you can't see the wind blows and tractor trailer accidentally slides into your lane. I've had to break fast or speed up to get away from tractor trailers that are sliding around in the wind

I cross the bay bridge on my daily commute. I see this bridge very differently since the key bridge fell. Still not really scary unless there's high winds

Been stopped on this bridge then feeling the swaying. Was on westbound the newer bridge in left lane. Always felt safer on the older bridge though. Maybe cause I watched the second one being constructed.

This bridge is only scary when it’s two way traffic on one bridge. Add that to at night or bad weather, then it’s scary.

My friend use to change the lightbulbs on that bridge in the middle of the night. The scariest part I found was having to sit in traffic for 3 hours to cross the bridge.
I’m afraid of heights which is why I find the suspended part of the bridge terrifying. Once I’m over that I’m fine.
I rate it as pretty scary but only when one span is closed and it's bidirectional on a single span, especially at night. Takes some serious concentration.
I have seen and responded to the replies, but for me it is a scary bridge because of the stories that I have read about with vehicles going over it. I am originally from the Cincinnati, Ohio-Kentucky border so I know about driving over bridges. The bridges I am used to are much more sturdier and built better than the bridges here in Maryland. This is my opinion. I too am fascinated about bridges and like to watch the videos that people make when they drive over them.

I went across this bridge a couple times i 2005-06 . It was a bit nerve-wracking but i made it!

I can say from experience that the old, original Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, SC had this beat hollow for "scary." Two lanes, 2.7 miles, 250 feet tall -- and fortunately, when I drove it, the bridge was one-way (whereas previous to building a separate northbound bridge, it carried two-way traffic).
The worst one was the old Nice bridge over the Potomac. Thankfully it’s been replaced!
The restaurant there on the right at the end of the bridge had really good crab cakes. It's been years though since I was last there.
At least the 24-mile Causeway in NOLA has emergency shoulders...
I’ve crossed this bridge numerous times.. only time I was slightly nervous was when I actually drove the car. I was so scared I was going to hit the side or my tire would blow or some crazy shit. My aunt used to park and get someone to drive her over lol
I'm honestly surprised the Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia isn't scarier.
Imagine if there is agreesive drivers and the west bound bridge closes down and traffic is backed up due to a truck blocking the way. 💀💀💀

I've driven across numerous bridges all up & down the U.S. East Coast. If you've got any anxieties about bridges or fear of heights, the Rte 13 bridge (FURTHER SOUTH) that takes you from Maryland's Eastern Shore to Tidewater Virginia will most certainly bring them out.
It's one helluva piece of engineering work, but a bit unnerving.

This does not seem that bad. I mean if you're traveling I55 through St Louis there's interchanges on both sides of that bridge and they bridge each other as they cross the Mississippi between Missouri and Illinois. That's pretty wild seeing bridges over and under you as you cross the River especially during the Winter if it has happened to snow before you cross it.
Glad to see the most scariest bridge in all of Maryland.
