  • Anne Arundel and Queen Anne’s County Officials Want Your Support for a Replacement Bay Bridge
    Traffic in Maryland surrounding the aging Chesapeake Bay Bridge is a problem that has grown out of hand. Queen Anne's County Commissioners and Anne Arundel County Council have now partnered with multiple Maryland counties in agreement that it is time to build a replacement span, and to move forward with the Tier 2 NEPA Study.
    It's time to make your voice heard. We encourage Maryland residents to reach out to your local representatives and give your support for a replacement Bay Bridge. mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsit...

    I hope when they build a new bridge, they include a train that goes over it all the way to Ocean City. If not, you will not solve the problem. And I know it will be people sitting at the table saying we don’t need a train for whatever reason, but those are the people that make the dumbest decision. You need a railway to go over that bridge to move people to eliminate the traffic and cars from being on it.

      An 80 lane tunnel with overhead airplane space wouldn't solve the problem. All you're doing is inviting more congestion and mayhem.

    Kid who grew up in MD here. Back in the day, Kent Narrows Drawbridge openings would back up traffic. They fixed that. MD likes “gimmick” solutions. Contraflow is incredibly dangerous, so they lower the speed limit to “school zone” speeds. Tolls are already charged, so replacement funding, from a legal standpoint shouldn’t be a problem. If NY could quickly replace the Tappen Zee Bridge and FL could rapidly replace the Sunshine State Skyway after a ship wrecked into it, Maryland is just making excuses, and their citizens “just take it” instead of demanding better from their governments!!

    A replacement bridge WILL NOT alleviate the gridlock along Rt. 50 through Queen Anne's County. This is a major safety concern for the Dept of Emergency Services and the local population.

      They would need something along the lines of the new Eastern Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge or the New Tappan Zee Bridge (5 lanes in each direction), plus Express Toll Lanes (like that found on I-95 between I-895 north of Baltimore to White Marsh) on both sides of the bridge.

    How about a tunnel, the way SF did it for BART several years ago. If a new bridge is built, can they make it wide enough and with high enough guardrails to not scare the p*** out of people?

  • @richardkline1832

    I agree with others. Building a new bridge would only be a short term fix. The roads supporting a bridge wouldn't handle more traffic. Also, if you build a larger bridge then more people will come.
    You need to decide if you really want more people.
    Any bridge must include at least 2 train tracks. You need to move people and freight from the roads, to the rails.

    They're definitely going to have to replace that old bridge so when they build a new one why not include a span for passenger trains?

    This could provide an opportunity to extend I-97 across Chesapeake Bay and than southbound on the Delmarva Peninsula. Currently I-97 only goes from Baltimore to Annapolis which is only 30 miles which is awfully short for a mainline interstate.

    • @nickz8629
      @nickz8629 Рік тому

      YES ! Into Norfolk. NC needs a coastal interstate to remove traffic from I-95 (Which is being widened to 8 lanes) , and to serve the coastal communities.
      Future it could extend further to NewBern NC, Wilmington NC (where I live), Charleston and terminate in Savannah.
      Also, Heading North From Queenstown could be a spur route I-297 to go back to I-95.

  • @cad5000

    Adding another span of the bridge will not help traffic flow. Because people will still have to drive on 97 and 50 which both become backed up due too traffic issues in Annapolis before you get to the bridge now due to small traffic issues. The reality is that they don’t want to pay to connect 695 or 100 to the shore which would alleviate traffic from the north going to Annapolis to cross which is the biggest issue.

  • @ctbt1832
    @ctbt1832 Рік тому +4

    Eight lanes will not solve the traffic problems. I see that because there are not eight lanes leading to the bridge itself from either direction. So you will have a back up on that bridge. If you want to alleviate or get rid of some of that back up, you must have a railway that go across the bridge through the projected counties all the way to Ocean City. That way, the train/railway will take some of the load off of the traffic issues. I’m speaking of a train similar to the light rail. It will be less cars on the road which means less cars on the bridge if you add a train. And yes, the train have to make stops in certain counties while traveling to Ocean City. That’s the best way to do this and his best to do it from the beginning and not try to add it later. Philadelphia have a similar bridge that has a train on it also. Just build the one in Maryland better than that one. I will also say you need a bridge from Woodbridge Virginia area to Maryland.

    Tear both bridges down and let the people move on to other areas of our great country. There are too many people jammed up in such a small area. The lure of living on the bay ended when the fish and other sea life were killed off by green-lawn-fertilizer pollution. I say let's bring the bay back to a wildlife paradise and end the constant encroachment on their home. No one doubts the demise of the 'hard-head' (croaker) population during the original construction in 1952. How dare we think another span will do any good to the creature populations.
    Having grown up in the area and watched the demise of a once flourishing bay, it sickens me to see more of the same being proposed. I myself moved on many years ago after seeing the diminished quality of life, both wildlife and human.

    PLEASE BUILD A TRAIN BRIDGE. Another span will not stop the massive amounts of traffic. When people see a new bridge they will want to use it, leaving traffic just as bad even worse as it was. We need a train to connect baltimore and OC. The East coast will be destroyed by the highway, once quiet towns like rock hall will probobly be turned into sprawl, just as stevensville was on kent island.

    After what just happened in Baltimore, they should be considering a tunnel there as well as on US-50.
    My solution would be a tunnel as on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
    No bridge over the shipping channel.
    I sketched out a 4-lane bridge-tunnel there for US-50 eastbound traffic. Island near the west anchorage, another near the east end of the eastern channel span. Just south of the two current bridges. About 9,000 foot long tunnel.
    Someday in the future when the current bridges wear out they can be replaced with 4-lane bridge-tunnel for westbound traffic.

  • @nickz8629
    @nickz8629 Рік тому +2

    ? The older span 1952 (Northbound) is getting a new decking 2023-2025. The newer span Westbound 1972 isn't. So which span are they 'replacing', or is this just a new addition?
    I see requests for the new span to be 8 lanes. [ could be 5 westbound, median, 3 that are interchangable] with the other two bridges both Eastbound 5 total.

  • @penguinsfan251

    I left the area 30 years ago so I really don't have a dog in the hunt. It does seem that a new bridge is in order. The original bridge is over 70 years old. There should be one cable stayed bridge to replace the two current spans. I am not aware of any protection to the bridge piers to keep them safe from a cargo ship.
    As for a train...no train could possibly climb the grade required for the bridge to cross the Bay and allow for ship clearance. A separate bridge with a drawbridge would need to be built.
    Just my opinions. It's your problem, Maryland, and it's a big problem.

    More studies and no action. Does Maryland really not want a new bridge or is the state that badly managed. The recent bridge collapse suggests the latter. Delaware has a twin span with 8 lanes total that fully opened in 1969, so this isn't some new-fangled concept or never been done before.

    A new bigger bridge won't solve anything. In fact it will make the problem worse. After a new bridge is built, commute times will go down temporarily. During that time, even more people than before will move/vacation to the east shore and then uh oh, now we're gonna need an even bigger bridge to "solve" the traffic problems.
    I would rather build up more infrastructure to promote public transport than just adding more lanes for cars.
