when we travel from the DC area to Virginia Beach, we'll usually detour by going east on this bridge (Chesapeake Bay Bridge), travel south though MD into VA and then go over/under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. much more fun than the old boring interstates. :) also, sometimes when heading north to Delaware or beyond on a Friday evening when traffic is really bad on I-95, Google Maps will send me eastward, over this bridge, then north through MD and DE local roads before rejoining I-95 around Wilmington, DE. fun!
I remember being stuck on the traffic jams on the old span. We'd be in the middle of the suspension part. Trucks going the other way would come by and the bridge would bounce up and down 6 or so inches. We got a flat tire on the old span in 1964 about half-way across in a cold pouring rain. And my dad had to drive off the bridge with the flat and had to unload the station wagon to get to the spare. I drove across them win a VW beetle during a hurricane with 65 mph winds. Great fun.
@@lisacallaway4421Me too I live an hour from the New Tappen Zee thank goodness that old treacherous span is gone it’s a double span 8 lanes it’s nicer and safer and even across the Hudson!
I've been driving over this bridge since the first span opened. It is GREAT! I LOVE IT! What a great view, especially when ships are passing underneath. [It is also awesome from the water.] And no, I do not miss the ferry. Yes. I am OLD.
Been on the bridge a few times and it’s scarier in person. 1st time my wife was driving and she was petrified of heights and there was no way to change position. Another time was when I was driving on the eastern span early morning in the fog. the sun decided to pop out so it was eye level though the fog.
I remember back in 2004 or 5 I think, I was on vacation with my mom and we spent a day in Ocean City MD, first time I ever drove the bridge. I remember when we were heading back to Baltimore since we were staying there for a few days, it was summer and it was almost 6 when we left, I was driving at warp speed trying to get to the bridge before dark! It was a miracle I didn't get pulled over by MD state police that time. But you called it, THAT IS ONE SCARY BRIDGE to try crossing at night - NO JOKE!
I grew up in Maryland and have crossed this bridge many times going home from visiting relatives on Maryland's Eastern Shore this bridge never scared me or my family in fact I loved crossing it The bridge that always scared me was the old St Georges bridge in St Georges Delaware
Myself and my wife were heading North from Carolina and we ended up on this bridge 🌉!! My wife slept 🛌 though the whole way. I thought the bridge 🌉 was totally Awesome!! The views, the ocean views were amazing! Can’t wait to get back on that bridge 🌉!!!!
I’m from NY and I crossed the Bay Bridge twice it was a nice shortcut back home! However I can see why this bridge is scary 😱I heard recently the traffic jams are scarier and worse!
As for the eastbound direction, the toll plaza was demolished and cash tolling has been abolished and even some bridges in the Eastern US have abolished cash tolling and toll plazas. Nowadays, cashless tolling and EZ-Pass on toll gantries replaced toll plazas.
Yeah now you get letters in the mail 8 months after the fact and you don’t even remember crossing the bridge yet it has a pay deadline of 12 hours once you receive it 😂😂😂
lol my best friend is very religious and scared of heights. He made me hold his various catholic charms while he white-knuckled it over the bridge on our way to OC
I remember it being scary the times I crossed over it years ago. It doesn't look near as bad in the video though, but I assure you it is when you do it live. Also, what is the fascination with the name Anne and county names???
Traffic gets backed up bumper to bumper from the Bridge onto 404 straight to Bridgeville DE. That’s 36 some miles away of non moving traffic one way westbound in May.
Yes, you can’t be daydreaming when you cross, especially if on a single lane EB. Hope new MD Governor Wes Moore keeps things moving on a replacement bridge - hopefully as wide as the new Tappan Zee / Cuomo bridge, ua-cam.com/video/5pLPggFHmhU/v-deo.html for MMT’s nice night crossing video.
Is it the movement of the bridge while driving, or the length of it? That there’s no middle barrier from Oncoming traffic? It’s hard to judge the “scary” part of it. It’s no worse than driving across the Overseas Hwy from the looks of the video.
I don’t get it… the way people carry on you’d think that there would be little to no guard rails or the bridge is super wobbly or something… but really, from the footage, it just feels like driving over any other bridge (granted, a very long bridge, but honestly doesn’t feel scarier than any bridge). The only thing I could think of that is going to be truly scary is, perhaps you get a lot of traffic jams on the bridge? It would be genuinely scary to have to start and stop and wait during such a long drive.
It’s not like this all the time. They sometimes close the other span and people have to cross on just one side. That’s why you see the one lane going the other direction. The Bay bridge has 2 spans and usually those 3 lanes are going the same direction.
@@TremainFisher They don't close the other span, the reason for the one lane going in the other direction is just to provide another lane for eastbound traffic during heavier traffic times like Fridays people heading to the beaches.....by Sunday its reversed and all 3 lanes are open for traffic heading west.
Doesn't seem as scary as some but weird its only 3 lanes with only one lane on the other side. Its up high and very very long. How long is it I wonder? I have never been across this one before.
The only thing that’s confusing is the name is similar to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel, so I call it not to confuse others the Annapolis Chesapeake Bay Bridge, or the Bay bridge 😂❤
Are there not two bridges with traffic on the opposite direction as well… Why would they have opposing traffic on one lane when traffic also goes the other direction on the next bridge… I’m confused here
The eastbound span (original span) is just two lanes, the westbound span is 3 lanes. so the left lane of the westbound span is reversible to handle heavier traffic traveling eastbound, especially Fridays with people heading to the beach.....then Sunday its reversed and westbound span is all 3 lanes heading west.
If you need less speed and more gorgeous views seen here, driving that would have been nerve jangling and too much intensity for me unless I could be the passenger.
It’s honestly a joke and laughable that people call this the scariest bridge around. I’m originally from Illinois and lived in Delaware 20 years now, driven over this a million times now just so I can get the hell outta Delmarva. It’s a wonder why people in Maryland and Delaware think Chicago is a suburb of Los Angeles…. It’s because they’re too scared to cross this pathetic bridge lol
Glad you crossed it WB with one lane heading EB. I was freaked out a bit when I crossed this bridge the first time with this configuration.

You're right, I discovered the CBBT and it's a lot easy going south bypassing 95 than actually being on 95.
That’s how I ended up going over it this time. I was planning to go south via I-95 but this route was recommended due to the traffic.
@@fredrickfarmer3762 walking on flaming broken glass is better the driving on i95 many times.

I got stuck on the westbound span in the 80s, stopped for over an hour due to accident, we got out the cooler and beach chairs lol
Reminds me a little of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge south of Tampa that collapsed in 1980 when struck by a tanker (from videos I have seen).
Yeah it has that similar feel. Very high up
I saw a TV special on this bridge where some people are so scared to drive this bridge that they hire drivers to drive their car over this bridge.
I am one of them! The East bound is worse than the West bound side. Wish they' rebuild it more like the Tappan Zee!
I saw that too!

it's huge and tall, and when there's a good cross breeze blowing, you think it's going to push you off into the water. yeah.

I have driven it both ways. Love it
Can’t wait for the Automated Lane Closure System to be fully in place.

Mackinac bridge in winter with high winds is scarier. Metal grates under you instead of road

At least there are guardrails on this bridge. There’s none on the Millard Tyding bridge in MD
Yup that Tyding bridge scare me

I've been on it without the contraflow but the other Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel is worse.
imo the scariest part is the summer weekend traffic that reaches all the way to Annapolis
It is a long and scary lookin bridge but doesn't look scary to me
It’s not scary at all.
@Jim Allen they’re the exact same… 🤪. Not scary at all. Westbound is the newer span.

Does the chesapeake bay bridge seem scary?
Let's face it, this is a failed design, where's the bike lane, walk path or pull over lane for accidents?
What’s scary about this bridge? I’ve driven it multiple times and didn’t think anything about it.
That's no fun. Bad enough when everyone's going the same direction.
Nothing scary about that bridge, come to Louisiana and go up the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles lol 😂
