Another great song along the same vein as this is "teen angel" by Mark Dinning.
And leader of the pack.
Two great songs that deserve a reaction.
Also the original Last Kiss by the Cavaliers.
Jim - great comparison.
Crying in the Chapel by Elvis.
Another song in this genre is Leader of the Pack, I believe the group is called the Shangrilas. There was a lot of teenaged angst and tabanka expressed in the 50s and 60s. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada
'Terry' by Twinkle is in a similar vein.
Add Last Kiss to that list too!
@mister stubbs and the Shirelles 💪💪💪
You need Patches by Dicky Lee. Teenagers are the saddest people on earth.
Since I was little, everytime I hear this song it gives me chill bumps! His voice and story telling style does it every time! 😢😔😊
It doesn't matter how many thousands of times I have heard this song, it never fails to make me cry a little.
Wow. I haven't heard this song in many years. Awesome. Made me think about my Dad, who's passed away. Brought tears to my eyes.
❤❤❤
💖
As the other commenters mentioned there were many teen death songs back then.. Teen Angel and a few more
There was a spouse death song in the mid sixties by Bobby Goldsboro “Honey” these songs were all sad and heartbreaking 💔
This song came out when I was young; I'm 74 now and hearing it just made me cry again.
Holy moly, takes a lot for you guys to get emotional. Are you still keeping well pal?
Ray was a pretty good singer and had happier songs, most notably "Corinna Corinna" and the first version of "The Wonder Of You",later recorded by Elvis
Yes Corinna Corinna is a great song by him.
I like the version of "The Wonder Of You" by The Platters.
@@cpklapper Didn't know they had a version of it.Tony Williams was an outstanding lead singer/vocalist,got their greatest hits album when I was 18.They were amazing
Omg you guys have made my day I haven't heard these songs in years!!!
Jan and Dean's "Dead Man's Curve" -'you won't walk back from dead man's curve' - is another of these 'dead teenager" songs.
This song was a fine example of a niche genre of "teen tragedy" pop songs.
Or "Teen Tragedy."
One of the saddest songs is Shangrilas Remember
One the famous tearjerker songs of the 60s, it's another rabbit hole to dive in to
One of the most beautiful songs ever sung! My beloved mom, who passed a year ago, loved this song. Thank you for the great memory!
💖
I was 3 when this song came out. I heard it on the radio and for some reason loved it! My mother bought the 45 for me and then I proceeded to drive her crazy asking her to play it over and over. 61 years later, I still love this song.
Another song of this ilk is “Laurie (Strange Things Happen),” by Dickey Lee.
One of my Aunts best friends growing up was named Laura! My little brother when he was little little, would sing this to her!🥰🥰🥰
Just watched your reaction to The End of the World... Followed by Tell Laura I love her. My heart & name can't take anymore ❣️😥
Crystal clear voice!! Huge hit
I didn't know about this version. Decca Records in England decided not to release Ray Peterson's 1960 recording on the grounds that it was "too tasteless and vulgar" and destroyed about twenty-five thousand copies that had already been pressed. A cover version by Ricky Valance, was No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks.
@Time Lord Victorious, the song Johnny Remember Me by John Leyton had to be rewritten as BBC deemed it to be "too morbid"
Now it's time for 'Leader of the Pack' by the Shangri Las, 'Teen Angel' by Mark Dinning, and 'Last Kiss' by J. Frank Wilson.
This was such a big genre of music for a while Lucille Ball did a parody on an episode of The Lucy Show where she sang 'My Trousseau Just Lies on the Shelf' with a made up group the Tear Ducts.
Oh, Last Kiss! Good on!
It's without a doubt one of the saddest songs ever written and sung in a way that delivers it with conviction
Loved this when i first heard it, i was 8. lol. But most are listed in here by others but they forgot :
"Down in the Boondocks" "
"Town Without Pity"
"Lonely Street" by patsy cline"
"Spring" by Tanya Tucker
"Cry" by Crystal Gayle
favorites all would really love to here you reaction to all but "Cry" is my most fav . Tyvm
Don't forget Patches
The Crests - The Angel Listen In (1959) another classic from the 50s. I would be very happy to see a reaction.Otherwise, I find you both so likeable, authentic, honest, emotional.
I like most of your songs. There is always something good. Just keep it up and thanks for the great minutes/hours.
Yes I’d think they’d really like that and Step by Step
Back in the '70s they actually came out with a couple of albums of "tear jerker" songs including this one, "Teen Angel", "Last Kiss" and others. Two others that came out later were "Honey" and "Patches". Back then the singers could convey the emotion of their songs. COuld you react to Vicki Carr's performance of her song "With Pen In Hand". Every time she sang the song she actually started crying. I saw her in concert twice and she cried both times.
not to forget Pat Boone's Moody River....from 1957?
Sean and Mel, you are the Best!!!! I've watched many video review channels and you guys are truly Number One!! I'm proud to say I'm old enough to remember the music of the 60's and 70's, and it is timeless and in a class of its own and a hard act to follow! Thank you both so much for presenting such great music and especially for having such an insight, understanding and appreciation for what these songs were about. I love to see the younger generation in love with such music. Keep up the great work!! Another great teen tear jerker is "Teen Angel" by Mark Denning. Would love for you to review that!
I don't blame you for your tears, from when I first heard it to now it always brings the tears.
When I was a little girl ( a century ago), I'd listen to this song over and over and CRY!!!!! LOL!!! 😢😢😭😭😭😭😿😿
Me too!
If you like this then listen to his original version of the wonder of you! Everyone knows and loves Elvis version and rightly so but ray Peterson's original is beautiful you will love It
"Ebony eyes " is a classic of this genre
For a sad song try the cavaliers oh where oh where can my baby be
I think you mean "Last Kiss" which chorus goes 'Where oh where can my baby be, the good Lord took her away from me"
Never heard this song before and damn, this song is deep. This so tragic.
Another old song that will also hit you in the feels is Honey by Bobby Goldsboro! PLEASE REACT TO THAT TOO! 💔
This song has a call back follow up, called "Tell Tommy I Miss Him", written from "Laura's reaction". It's by Marilyn Michaels I believe.
This used to be played every yr. on radio when Indy 500 was going on. Many years ago!
Born in 73 my Dad played many of these songs so I know many of the Golden Oldies. Sooo glad and thankful these songs can still be appropriated today. Thanks y'all.
A real tear jerker--as a preteen I cried everytime this was played!
Hello Shawn and Mel, if your looking for a sad song, react to " Patches" by Dickey Lee . Shawn if this song doesn't bring you some tears, nothing will. It is a much sadder song than "Tell Laura I love her". By the way, I'm a 67 year old male, so I do go back some years LOL. Thank you for your time.
Patches has always been one of my favorites.❤
Patches was one of the saddest songs of all times. Teenage girl commit suicide because of love and social class taboos. Rich boy fitting to jump into the river to join her! So depressing!
Patches? OMG! I haven’t heard that one in years.
In 1970 when I was going to Harbert Hills Academy in Savannah Tennessee my friend was teaching me guitar. This is one of the first songs she played and sang for us in the dorm one night while she was teaching me. Everybody in the dorm was crying when she finished. She had a beautiful voice and SO MUCH TALENT. I think of her every time I hear this. We kept in contact until about 6 or 7 years ago. She stopped calling and I couldn't get in touch with her. I don't know what happened and I don't know anyone to call. LOIS ZETKO if you're out there you'll know who this is. I miss you my friend. If she happens to see this I know she would click on it to watch. 💖💖💖
Another sad one is “Last Kiss” by J Frank Wilson. Pearl Jam did a cover of Last Kiss a few years ago.
Ah yes . . . the "teenage death" songs. Like JV Smith (below) noted, there are many, many of these. My favorite is "Ebony Eyes" by the Everly Brothers. Check it out.
I was looking for someone to mention Ebony Eyes, the Everly Brothers contribution to the teen death genre. Big Everly Brothers fan here!
Love you !! Ray Peterson had a great voice. Try listening to "The Wonder of You" !!
Please react to "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Another sad tear-jerker.
Not sure if its based upon a true story. May I suggest "I can never go home anymore" by The Shangri las; "Endless sleep" by Jody Reynolds; "Teen angel" by Mark Dinning; "Leader of the pack" by The Shangri las; "Patches" and "Laurie" by Dicky Lee, "Ebony eyes" by The Everly brothers; "Last kiss" by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers "Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson; "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro "The Green Green grass of home" by Tom Jones and "The Bridge, "Down from Dover" and "Me and little Andy" by Dolly Parton( Studio versions are best for your best reactions. Love you guys ☺
The most famous "death" song was " Teen Angel" by Mark Denning, it was even on the "American Graffiti" soundtrack. An interesting song is "Strange Things Happen in this World" by Dickie Lee a song about a date with a ghost!!!
Omgosh! Yes! They should listen to Teen Angel!! Thanks for remembering that and posting it.
Strange Things Happen was inspired by Chicago's most famous ghost story - "Resurrection Mary"
They're reactions are heart felt
Some music touches your heart. Some music touches your soul.
All the "old" songs have such deep meaning" music happy and silly songs. But I can most usually make out the words, sing along and laugh or cry because at least I can understand them and they are relatable.
Sad song for sure. I remember when it came out as i was a young kid and my older sisters always cried when it played.
This song reminds me of my mum. She played it to me when I was about 8/9 years old. I cried my eyes out. She never let me live it down 😂
Other teen death songs-Last Kiss by J. Frank wilson, Teen angel by Mark dinning, Ebony eyes by Everly Brothers , Leader of the Pack by the Shangri-las and my all time favorite-Jimmy Cross-I want My Baby Back.
I love sad songs, like this!
You can feel this song deeply as he sings . So sad and tragic. Deep love still in ones heart.
very sad 1972 without you harry hilsson
This from my "Puppy Love years" I still love it at age 74
hi peeps have already mentioned the Shangri-las Leader of the pack my fav from Shangri - las is remember( walking in the sand ) bit of a break up song
I glad Shawn is a mush ball like me. I can't listen to this without crying.😢
This song always makes me cry 😢. But its such a good song
This is a sad song I remember hearing it in the Spanish version with Cesar Costa (Tommy y Laura) you got to hear it.
Another great Ray Peterson song is "The Woner of You"
I used to hear this on the radio in the early 60s, but I was too young to get upset. Hearing it now, it really gets to me.
Glad to see Shawn is a mush ball like me. I can't listen to this without getting watery eyed.
Your reaction and emotions to this and other songs, is honest and not held back. Thank you!!
i recall thesong as a teenager, we used to ponder the song. and felt the angst of love lost.
That song came out of the death of James Dean in I believe 1955. I’m not sure if the story is true but he died in a finery crash in 55 and people started writing teen song of tragedy. That’s about all I know. BTW You guys are awesome.
A masterpiece from the past.. 💕
This song was one of many from the era that became known as "Dead Teenager" songs. The most famous of these is probably "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and after that is "Patches" by Dickie Lee. But there were dozens of these all over the radio in the early 60's. Some of them were not bad songs but they are mostly regarded as jokes now.
Ebony Eyes by the Everly Brothers
Another song that reminded me of that genre and came out later was Indiana Wants Me, by R Dean Taylor. He was Canadian and I believe the only white guy (or one of the very few) signed to Motown
Who regards these songs as jokes? They poured out their emotion into these songs. A story of serious love. Not today's crappy songs. Phony artists with mediocre or bad voices to have to rely on artificial electronic voice enhancements, twerking so-called dance moves. All flash no substance. No real talent. Fake it to make it. Bitter, angry, violent, dark, no happiness, no fun, cursing, disrespectful to women, hateful songs by self-absorbed self-important hedonistic entitled people. Lighten up, don't be so serious, enjoy the beauty, the love, the differences, the fun, of the world and life.
@@truthguide1742 I didn’t say I thought they were jokes, don’t shoot the messenger, that’s just the overall perception, unfortunately. Some of them are actually pretty good. I actually agree with most of what you say here.
@@jethro1963 Indiana Wants Me came out after this era/fad had passed (1970 or so). Taylor recorded for “Rare Earth Records” (Division of Motown) whose roster included the group “Rare Earth” who were also white. My favorite artist from this time was “Stoney & Meatloaf”, yes, that Meatloaf and I think this album may have been his first.
I’m so sorry Shawn, this song really got to you, even though it’s such a sad song, its also beautiful because he loved Laura so much
Y’all done started a whole new rabbit hole with these! I love them!
This was a great but sad song and the fact that you only heard the first half, the answer to this is Skeeter Davis the song is called tell Tommy I love him. After listening to the second part it you feel even sadder.
Really enjoy your videos. You have different artist from different categories of music. Great!!!
i am 52 and when i was 7 or 8 i heard this song and it broke my heart in the back seat of my babysiters car. i never ever forgot the song and asked people growing up if they knew that song,. it wasn't till i utube searched it the other day that i found it! im sorta obsessed with the song now. Thanks for playing it
The song just WORKED. It did what it was meant to. It reached in and tugged at your emotions! Now you have to review "He Stopped Loving Her" by George Jones!
Yes, Shawn And Mel It Was Based On His Brother's Life. He Did Not Survive That Fatal Car Crash. I Have Looked It Up. It Is A True Story
I know I'm repeating myself for the third time on commentary but I went through all the other songs speed dial through all your other reactions and this is the best reaction you ever did to a song it made me cry my eyes out second best was when you did Gloria by Laura branigan but you did a lot of others but those two are the best and this is number one so all you people out there you got to listen to s h a w n and Mel's reaction to this great love song from the past the ultimate tearjerker song
Leader of the Pack by the Shangrilas. Boyfriend dies in motorcycle accident.
This is one of my dads favorite songs, it has so much emotion in it. Sad but true love forever!
What a beautiful voice
I remember hearing this song back then at the age of six on the radio,
Love from the UK, love your reactions.
If you would like to hear the other half of this song The rebuttal look up a country singer named Skeeter Davis and her song tell Tommy I miss him. I was about five or six years old when I first heard this song my mom who is no longer with us used to play it all the time it was one of her favorite songs when I was little. The song still brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it because it reminds me of those tender times when I was a child and I listen to it with my mother.
Love this long forgotten song.
I have to show this again to my girl my God she cried her eyes out one of the best two jerking songs of all time next to Honey by Bobby Goldsboro on your commentary was great on that the best there is again sorry for taking up space again but I had to have to see it again
I met Ray Peterson years ago on several occasions. He became a minister later in life.
is he still living today ?
This beings tears to my eyes.
Wow. I was 8 years old. I still cry.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️wow I was 11 another great song …
Teenangel is also a tearjerker 😢🥺💔
love love this song 🎵❤💕 sad though
I remember this song. I was six years old. That has happened to many race car drivers. Now I can't confirm if this particular event occurred. However, based on the culture if is possible that an event occurred that may have inspired the writer to pen this song.
This one. Teen Angel. Leader Of The Pack. All tearjerkers.
These were the songs that used to break my young heart. Aching for a girl of my own. Thank Y’all!
I was 40ft away from him, when he sang this at, Roger Young Hall in L.A. 1967
The way you were both swaying and nodding your heads to the words at start of song was great mmmm good live song here ypu must of though
The bam the words turn from a love song to tragedy the sudden expression change from joy to sorrow hit you where it hurts
Uch a sad sad song and amazing reaction as if you lived it yourselves
And to see you both in tears was like you both lost a loved one
Thankyou for emotional reaction you yourselves bought tears to MY eyes although I've heard song a million times
Man, I'll go back to 1960 any time.
You guys make listening to a great song even better.
This always made me cry..
Should you want another real tear-jerker, try Bobby Goldsboro’s, “Honey”.
My dad and his brothers were mechanics. They grew up during the 40's and 50's. They were Blue collar greaser types that drove around in hot rods and they had some friends that raced and sadly didn't make it.
Not sure if this song was from a true story but my dad said those things happened to some teens when he was in high school.
Around this same time, my sister was in high school. Four of her classmates were all killed in a car wreck. They were all in the same car. Hadn’t thought of that in years. That was about 60 years ago.
I remember my grandfather radio would play these songs .. and now they today are so significant.
I’m not sure if it relates to a specific event -but drag racing and car racing was very popular at that time. There was in fact many teenager tragedies.
