I'm an out and out AEC man, but got to say that 680 sounds lovely and reminds me of George or ronny Boyce taking me to the Isle of grain with an extendable trailor from redparth dorman long with beams over the headboard and a overhang on the extended trailor, (it opened to 60 feet) in one of bill Foresters scammell handyman or Leyland beavers, probably 1967,68, probably both not with us anymore but both made an impression on my childhood, great carectorors, not to mention, Jim Read, basher, ronny crane, Jeff, Jim wadlow, Harry Taylor and my dad was gerry the fitter , Waterloo gardens, Bethnal Green, Belmont wharf, and buster the dog!
I had a super buffalo 6x4 (like a bison, but smaller) about 10 years back, with a Leyland 510 turbo... Sadly it was a real rot-box! Engine was nice though, always started right up first time every time... and if you've ever driven a Leyland National, (same engine) that's rare!
That 680 sound,s a bit sick, you have an injector packed up or a broken injector pipe, there is a distinct chuff in an other wise forty beast. The the old 6 speed David brown box is too quiet for my liking ,need the AEC Thornycroft D473 box very musical. Like a fab singer, the 680 needs decent backing vocals, listen to a 680 Bristol RE Bus WHW 374H with 5 speed SCG semi-auto ,JESUS THAT IS MUSIC!!!,
You would think Rolls Royce diesels would be smooth and quiet, they were anything but.. They could also be an absolute swine to start in cold weather, but once you finally got them going they could pull like a train..
That sound is incredible!
Those beautiful sounds! Music to the ears.
Love the sound of that engine. Thanks!
Always liked the Michelotti Routemans with the 680 Leyland engine, really miss that sound nowadays, expertly driven as well ! Thankyou !

Seen this fair few times at the east coast run. Love Scammell!

Basil Taylor I used to be a part owner of that bus... yes it is music, especially at motorway speeds...
Basil Taylor it is the mentioned David Brown gear stick that's chattering making the noise
tony bristow don't think I said anything about weird noises....?
I must admit it doesn't sound quite right.
MrHarleyoldfart it is the gear stick that's rattles causing that sound not the engine it's annoying really
I-Spy Tesco's Google R.D.C.
I had one with a 220 Rolls in it, absolute pig, noisy as hell, was glad when it got stolen and I bought a 2300 Daf to replace it.
