    Nice bit of clutch less driving and that roller sounds sweet, I have driven a Leyland Constructer with the Rolls engine and fuller box, what a performa with that Rolls engine, bags of grunt up the hills with 20 tons of limestone on its back, nice to hear that engine again, made my day.

    That is utter music! Lovely Smooth shifting. Got to agree with Below comments about the more modern automatic junk on the market now a days. Also got to admit if I where to head for a long distant jaunt I wouldn't be takeing an older truck you really do feel a days driving in them compared to the new vehicles.

    Yes I do !!,in the 1970,s as a ten year old living not far from a transport cafe on the A46 Stroud to Bath main road I saw pulling into that Cafe Petrol Station run by Mr Mrs Anderson Seddon 13/4,s AEC Mandators ,Marshalls, Mercuries, Atkinson Borderers ERF A,s , LV,s and the odd Foden Sputnik. Said cafe sits not far from the crest of a vicious steep twisty section of the A46. Many a time I heard Bulwarks Seddon 13/4 artic tankers struggle up that steep twisty section their Roller 290,s bellowing fit to bust in low range , a snail would leave one in its slimy wake. In UK haulage underpowered engines was a way of life and drivers had to accept in order to pay their bills . In the early 70,s a 180 Gardner twirling a 6 speed David Brown Box was the Gaffers preferred method of propulsion, be lucky to have a 2-speed Eaton Back Axle to make those hills a littler easier.

    Good to see crawler high being used, I had the same gearbox in a Leyland Marathon. Preferred the 13 speed Fuller box and used crawler high a lot in the Alps.

      yes,i,d love a 13 speed in it,had one in a foden when i was younger,great box and the perkins/rolls that was in it needed all the help it could get.rarely skip gears in this one though,its just as quick and easy to use em all.

    love the sound and totally agree about the modern crap autos. you can drive these old boxes beautifully if you know what your're doing and there is the point modern kids dont have to be good drivers in todays trucks with 700 hp and effectively three speed main boxes

    • @jenw6069ify

      I love the sound to Tubecraft but only for a trip down the country side.I am a Dutch HGV driver for over 35 years but when i am driving to spain these day's i choose my new FH crappy or not above any 40 year old English swedish dutch or german truck.But i totaly agree that old stuff brings back a lot of sweet memories.

      you are right i suppose but i got to dislike autos instantly when i had to use a daf xf105 auto with a selector switch/ gearbox that struggled to find reverse every time i had to back in any where. opti cruise was good in the scanias though i have to admit

    Love the Crusader , my kinda wagon , the 305 Roller is way too underpowered ,rorty but underpowered. If i won the lottery , buy a Crusader in decent nick, change the Roller Fuller power pack for a 16 litre KittyCAT C16 meowing a respectable 600 ponies .some Kitties meow close to 700 . bolt on a 6 speed Allison Autobox with the transmission block removed for direct manual gear changing via a short throw stubby lever, a 3 speed plus overdrive aux box giving 18 forward and 3 reverse,.Change the hub reduction Scammell bogie for a Single Reduction Rockwell SQH-RD geared short,and shod on 315\80, R22.5 Michellin X Tyres,on Speed Line Alloys then dump the awful Alford Adler front axle, for a 9 ton Kirkstall on 385\65 R.22.5 Michelin X or Continental Super Single Tyres on Speedline Alloys,..The vertical stove pipes would go, i hate stove pipes, instead a short straight narrow bore stub pipe made from Eminox stainless steel under the air tanks behind the left front wheel. Make her sound like a Consolidated Vultee B-36 Peacemaker Bomber from the 50,s that is LOUD!!!!. Modern wagons are just washing machines with wheels added.

    Is there gears U-model, not H? I had droven finish Sisu with Leyland 690 enginen with 9 gear Fuller where 3th and 4th gears was on opposite places, so U-model.

    • @terrycrusader

      yes,from 8th to 9th you do a ''u'' pattern the 10 is directly forward.

  • @GarbageSean

    Amazing sound and rig! What year is this truck? What's the engine? 15 speed Eaton Fuller, right? What's the exhaust, dual 5 inch stacks?

    • @terrycrusader
      @terrycrusader  8 років тому +2

      its a rolls royce eagle,305 hp,the pipes are straight through 4 inch i think,,all dinex stuff i made myself.

  • @Rekku9
    @Rekku9 9 років тому

    Can't they make the engine any quieter? I was driving a Finnish-built Sisu for two hot summer weeks but couldn't open the driver's window, the noise was so awful. I'd say you would lose hearing of your left ear after a month.

    • @terrycrusader
      @terrycrusader  9 років тому +1

      +Rekku9 the noise is all part of it for most of us,believe it or not it's quieter with the window open,always listening out for any noises that may be an early warning of something about to go wrong,i have the algae problem in the diesel tanks so catching that first change in exhaust note enables me to stop as soon as its safe before it conks out altogether in a bad place.

    • @terrycrusader
      @terrycrusader  9 років тому +2

      Duncan Middleton hiya Duncan,its a rolls in this,ex military lorry with the 305 eagle,i have twin straight through stacks which make the racket aswell.

    • @duncanmiddleton4929
      @duncanmiddleton4929 9 років тому +1

      Thanks for clearing that up for me Terry. But ever since I was a kid (back in the 60s!) I used to see loads of Scammell Highwaymen in BP/Shell livery with their tanker trailers - they were getting old but still looked great - when I saw my first Crusaders (usually 4x2s), I was hooked. They looked like they could part the red sea of any traffic jam, and sounded superb. To see so many being restored and run today is wonderful - and I can see that yours is particularly impressive. Keep it going! Best wishes. Duncan

    • @lewiemcneely9143

      +Duncan Middleton Can't be a Detroit because it's not screaming. If it is it has to be a 60 Series which is a 4-cycle. Too much of a "POP" for a 2-cycle.

    • @MrHarleyoldfart
      @MrHarleyoldfart 8 років тому +2
