Intrestingly the doctor's speech on Pica also resonates with people with OCD. The whole compulsive 'You know it's not rational and you do it anyway and it interferes with your life." I felt that.
Pica is such a dangerous condition to have and it should absolutely be talked about more without the stigma of being made fun of or treated poorly. There’s a movie from a few years ago about a woman who is unhappy and in a controlling marriage and she develops pica and ends up even swallowing thumbtacks. It’s called “Swallow” and it came out in 2019 and stars Haley Bennett.
I have pica and I know it is very serious I have permanently damaged my body it hurts to swallow sometimes I want it to go away but it’s like any other addiction you don’t realize how bad it is until you are to far in I’m trying my hardest to get better like every other addict but it is always hard to stop
@@veggies2389 that’s part of the illness - which isn’t their fault, by the way. People with pica don’t choose to have pica anymore than diabetes or epilepsy or anything else you’re born with or predisposed to.
I have pica , I don’t think the stuff I eat is that bad Cause I’ve been doing this for 3-4 years and I’m somewhat fine Have not had stuff physically happen but I can’t really feel Hunger (I starved my self in the past for periods of time) and when I am hungry I eat the un edible thing , The thinking that I’ll be laughed at and treated differently Is right , my sister told my grandmother and she said “ Ew, that’s disgusting “So that did not help And also the stuff I eat Is everywhere so it’s hard to get away from it To try and stop , It’s also hard that this condition does not have more light on it cause even if I get caught most people will just think I’m a weirdo who eats that , I’m wishing it will go away over time so I can Escape from bigger problems that my condition could cause
Doctor: Your copilot says that sometimes you get confused. Patient: I have no idea what he is talking about. Doctor: There you go. Classic symptom of confusion.
I really do appreciate that this disease gets some time in the spotlight. While I am not personally affected by the condition, I am aware of an extremely harrowing story of someone I knew who nearly perished from the consequences. This particular case involved yarn or hair and wax (as in candles), and a huge operation to get several pounds of material out of the stomach and intestines. I only learned of this some time after the fact, by which time we had lost contact. I hope they are doing OK today.
I just to eat bits of plastic 🙃 I'd have to force myself to stop. Thankfully Pica is just an immune system problem so just changing the diet can fix it.
I only watch this show via some of these clips and this is weird to read for me. To a here-there viewer, she seems like an awful, underconfident doctor without much smarts but a decent amount of beauty.
@@JamaicanRain she's a resident and actually started as an intern i believe. if you watch the show she develops pretty well but unfortunately it was cut short when her actress decided to leave the show.
Wow....didn't think a person could even drink a small amount of gasoline without immediately getting severely ill. This condition must be a MAJOR struggle to deal with. I can't even imagine putting that stuff anywhere near my lips!!! Just the smell alone would make me lose it. My heart goes out to anyone who is struggling with this condition.
It doesnt necessarily have to be gasoline, but yeah PICA is a struggle to deal with not only because of the physiological damage but also the stigma and sense of shame in engaging in irrational, compulsive behavior
I knew a girl who always wanted to ride in the car on trips to fill up the car. She'd become intoxicated by the smell of gas like kids love candy. She also loved the smell of bleach. Never ingested it. Just the smell was enough.
I work in emergency medicine (I am the Field Medical Officer for a Search and Rescue/Recovery and Rapid Disaster Response Team. Specifically L1 Trauma field specialized) I've seen people inhale it but not drink it... My mentor said he has seen a pt drink it but it killed him pretty quickly, about a month and half.
Pica also happens when someone is deficient in certain nutritions. I learned about it when I was majoring in nutrition. It's very interesting. PICA is a very real condition that people can suffer with. Especially in dementia/Alzheimer's patients, my grandma had Alzheimer's and she used to eat a stick of butter then it turned into eating the couch or soap. I wasn't alive yet when this was happening to her but I can only imagine the suffering she went through with Alzheimer's and PICA.
I love to eat burnt matches. I love the texture & flavor. I've been eating them since I was around 3yrs old. My Dad said if he didn't give me the burnt match after he lite his cigarette. I'd throw a full blown tantrum. I'd scream, cry, & then just go silent & wouldn't talk to him for hours. It got so bad that they asked my doctor if it would hurt me. He told them that there's something in it my body is lacking. I'm wondering if it could be PICA now. I'm not able right now to get matches because I don't have any money nor income. I'm really wanting them though.
I always get iron deficiency anemia, and then had B12 deficiency at one point. I use to crave gasoline, kerosene, and scented candle wax at one point. It was bad but I wasnt excessive with it. I would dip my finger in those things, and then lick it off. Im Anemic right now too, but thankfully havent craved anything weird.
I really feel like Pica is not talked about enough. It all stems from physical, psychological, and emotional issue and sone of that, as you can see, can be very toxic and deadly but we can't help it. Thankfully, probably due to anemia I don't get checked on (but I had it real bad when I was adopted), I only eat ice. All the time. I go looking for the best crushable ice (which isn't Sonic anymore to me. It's the Panda Express right across from my work). I even eat it in the shower. I'm talking like one of those special edition movie cups you get at theaters for big time movies (mine is the Beauty and the Beast movie with Emma Watson). I grab a handful before work, I eat it work and take all the ice cubes. I'm have pain in my mouth now and need a couple of crowns for the two cracked teeth and probably a root canal for a big cavity. I almost panic if I run out and will go out of my way to buy 3 more bags for the week. But I can't bring myself to care. Any problem I get I can fix. I just need ice. Whether I'm hot or cold. More than alcohol. Alcohol is okay, but ice keeps calm. Distracted.
Please please be careful eating ice and try to take iron tablets. I’ve broken a couple teeth and caps from chewing ice. It can do some serious damage to your teeth.
Please don’t ignore signs of anemia, I did for awhile and even when I started eating ice but last year since I was just used to it at a regular check up with my new doctor they ran labs and found my iron level to be a 3, that’s deathly low for iron, very low is considered a 12 so a 3 was definitely a big issue, I’m only just now a year later coming off iron pills and if I’ve got a medical condition then I’ll never be off of them
@@ShinySonic the pills that got prescribed to me where SOOOO BIG and tasted so terrible. did you manage to find a good chaser for the pills because im still struggling all these months later.
@@kandyburra well my doctor just prescribed me some tablets which are kinda big but they’re not so bad to swallow you just need a lot of water, you won’t really taste them unless you can’t get it down which I have a trick for: if you can’t swallow something in water get like a bite of food then swallow it with that and obviously drink water afterwards
Then later the supportive wife flips her shit after finding out that Dr. Charles reported her husband to the aviation board. That meant the loss of his pilot license and job. Wife was okay with the husband getting treatment until realizing that her husbands mental health effected his career.
I don't know what the regulations are for pilots, but, if this means he can't fly anymore, he'll probably have to find another line of work. Which probably means that he'll need to start from scratch to find a career. He might have to go back to school get another degree, it'll certainly affect his livelihood, assuming that his wife doesn't have a job that pays as much as her pilot husband. If not, then she'll either have to work longer hours or find a better paying job until her husband can get back on his feet.
@@starscream4812 Not necessarily. Some businesses might not want to risk a relapse and you certainly wouldn't want him having another attack like this when in the air. A plane might not have the necessary medical equipment and it takes time to get to an emergency landing site. But like I said, I'm not sure how this all works.
I mean, why would she not be upset they ruined his, and possibly her and their family’s, life? He shouldn’t lose his job just cause he’s sick, and they had no business ruining someone’s life like that. This is why people don’t ask for help.
I used to have Pica and they linked it to my anemia. Once my anemia was solved, the Pica just went away! As crazy as this is gonna sound, I wish I still had my Pica because my compulsion was to eat ice. It didn't matter how cold I was, I *had* to eat ice; my skin had never been clearer and it was so soft, but I was concerned about the possibility of hurting my teeth with the big chunks of ice. My solution was to go to Sonic and buy their 1lb bag of ice chips 2x a week. This continued through my first two years of University, so my mini fridge couldn't hold the big bag, so I had to use my dorm building's kitchen fridge lol - I stapled a sticky note onto the bag my room number so that nobody would take it lmao
that's my issue. I'm a huge ice eater and I was anemic when I was little. I don't really know now because I don't go to doctors but went to the dentist. I have 2 cracked teeth and need some crowns. I still don't care. I need ice. I almost panic if I run out of ice because I don't have a machine. I have to buy it in bags. I go through 3 bags of ice a week and even eat a cup in the shower. but I would rather eat ice that doesn't gain me any weight than go to a doctor. I don't have a phobia of them, just an aversion to touching. But I feel like when it comes to Pica, ice is probably the best case scenario. It's not toxic, it doesn't gain weight, and if its soft enough (which I have been doing lately), it doesn't bother you too much. I'm pretty sure I still have anemia but like I said, I rather eat ice than get help. I just don't trust anyone
The thing is, eating ice when you're anemic is rational. I believe there is a connection between anemia and dehydration and fluid loss. I learned very cold drinks and ice causes your body to feel hydrated faster. I was severely anemic as well and felt very thirsty all the time and no matter how much i drank, i didn't feel hydrated so i started craving and eating ice. My thirst would go away almost instantly. I also wonder if there was more iron in water naturally during our history of development as a species so in extreme need we expect to still get it from water.
@@xeniamartin5297 I know exactly what you mean. I felt like I needed ice around the clock and I, too, used to eat ice in the shower. And I can understand the anxiety of going to the doctors, believe me! But sometimes we have to do things as more of a preventative measure. Depending on the reason behind your anemia, you could possibly face heart issues down the line. Anemia can cause irregular heartbeats, dizziness, and if it is iron related (like me), you could even start having seizures. I don't want you to think that I am badgering or shaming you or something, I am just worried about your overall health!! But anyhoo! Straight up ice can definitely wreck your teeth, especially the kind that are round and tubular shaped. I highly recommend the Sonic ice because it has that satisfying crunch, but it is also soft enough to where it isn't going to damage your teeth any further. If you can't get it, what I used to do was put the ice into a cup and then run a bit of hot water into it, softening it. Then I just drained the water out and went on my merry, ice-crunching way!
@@CS-uc2oh Yeah, my anemia was caused by a very low iron deficiency. It was so bad, I had to go and receive blood transfusions every two weeks for nearly six months. And before I had my tumor removed (before the severe anemia), I had something called SIADH syndrome. Basically, my body was in "survival mode" and began retaining as much fluid as possible, which made me never feel thirsty. When they checked my counts, they immediately rushed me into the ICU because my sodium levels were so low, I could start seizing and drop into a coma. That is when they drastically restricted my fluid intake. Like, I was only allowed one ounce of fluid every single day for nearly two weeks. I couldn't eat fruit because it had natural water in it and was basically told that I could only drink soda. I had to stretch that one ounce throughout the day so that I could take my medications. They even started giving me literal salt cubes. The look identical to sugar cubes, so I was like, hell yeah! This is gonna taste amaz- NOPE! Ughh!! It was awful!! The salt cubes were genuinely awful and they made me sooo sick and nauseous. If you think it would be hard to get it down, it was even worse coming back up. The coarseness of the salt scratched my throat up so badly from traveling both ways, my throat was bleeding, which means open wounds, and you know the saying: "To rub salt in the wound." It was hell for sixteen year old me, but I am doing better-ish now, seven years later!

So intriguingly one other thing a lot of people present with when they are anemic is pagophagia, a type of pica in which people suck or chew on ice. I’d recommend for all you ice chewers out there that you bolster up your iron intake :3
When my nana was a kid, her sister (my aunt) was about 3 or 4 and was eating the paint chips off the wall but she got lead poisoning and her fever was so high they had her in an ice bathtub. This was in the 1940’s and my aunts still here. Stay safe everyone
What’s her mental state been like? I mean no disrespect, but I recall that children with lead poisoning often develop neurological conditions including mental disturbances. Perhaps it goes away if the lead is removed.
@@davidthaler7018 she doesnt have any mental issues, the only real issue is that she has MS, not sure if the lead caused it or not. Shes the sweetest person you could every meet, her body is just slowly not functioning.
Actually your investment would be maybe $20-$30 USD and just slowly ingest yourself with gasoline over a 12 months period ( which you shouldn’t ) but that would only be 100-200$ investment for an addiction
@@summon1456 Gasoline goes bad over time. So he either gets it in small portions, or (my honest theory) uses the suction method to get it from a car's gas tank directly (the suction method that i'm talking about is a way to empty an entire gas tank without any machinery).
My daughter has ASD(Autism spectrum disorder) She has PICA. Her compulsion is paper....I didn't understand it either. Now, I just try my best to correct the behavior and do my best to keep a close eye on her.
There are types of edible paper meant for use in desserts and other foods you could give your daughter made of rice or wafer it could help her satisfy the compulsion while being meant to be consumed maybe teaching her that if she when she has this compulsion to eat one specific type of paper that you put in a special place will help. Both my sister and I dealt with harmful compulsions as children and even into our teens and our parents taught and helped us transfer it onto something else rather than try to get rid of the behavior completely I use to scratch at my arms when I was upset or anxious and in my teens it was so bad I scratched them raw I got taught to transfer that into art and fidget toys.
Oh wow, I have autism and I have a compulsion to eat paper. When I was younger it was all types of paper, cardboard and tissue. Now its mainly tissue and cupcake wrappers with the occasional bit of paper. This is really making me think I should get it checked out cause I didn't know it was a thing
I din't have diagnosed ASD but it's a possibility, and I have been eating paper since I can remember. It's never been frequent enough to be an issue and it's gotten alot better over the years, but I still find myself occasionally chewing on a bit of paper in lieu of a chewing gum or other snack lol.
I have ASD and I used to eat paper as a kid. I don’t think it was compulsive but I really liked it. I still eat a corner off of printer paper sometimes
I've not heard of this in real life, but its possible. On the other hand, my father was a tank commander and master gunnery instructor at a time when tanks had aircraft engines that used 100 octane aviation gasoline. t was very volatile, used not only as fuel but as a solvent. The tank crew would be as "high as a kite" after a day's duty - it was like sniffing glue. It could damage lungs, the gut and the liver. My dad was also a three pack a day cigarette smoker at the time. He has been out of the military now for nearly 60 years and a non-smoker for thirty. Has has no liver disease, nor emphysema. And no lung cancer. He is very lucky.
i havent seen the show other than these clips, but the pilot said he was a navy fighter pilot. similar very high octane fuels are used in military aircraft. my guess? the guy was maybe subconsciously bored by the mundanity of flying commercial compared to his "hero days" and associated that fuel high with it. so he began to *need* that fuel when flying commercially, to anchor himself back to flying fighter jets
@@briancrawford8751 jp8(military fuel) is derived from kerosene with a much higher octane than straight kerosene. And commercial aircraft run on aviation kerosene which is also high octane. If anything your statement reaffirms my theory, it's the show that has the "error" of calling it gasoline (which is highly pedantic since both are hydrocarbon fuels derived from petroleum). Besides all this, my point wasn't about the finer subtleties of fuel composition, it was about the man's potential synesthetic connection to his more exciting past. Ask anyone in military aviation or armored, you never forget the smell.
There was a girl on "My Strange Addiction" who was actually addicted to drinking gasoline. It was so wild that, at first, I thought it was a gag episode but she actually talked about how much it burnt her throat and how painful drinking the gasoline was but also how the craving was so strong that she couldn't stop it.
My pica was for raw rice. It affected my health, I had never experienced worse stomach aches in my life. My mind tried to rationalize why I would do this to myself and I just…couldn’t. I always said I could stop and the next thing I know, I was pulled out of school due to “collapsing” in pain. Thankfully I’m a few years off of it. Doing much better.
I heard a french guy his was coins but what killed him was a nail by the time they had to open him up for surgery it was a bloody mess too much and well that's what you get for doing that to yourself ☠️☠️☠️☠️
You just unlocked a memory I completely forgot about. I used to eat raw rice too. Straight out of the plastic container in the kitchen. I still have a chewing compulsion to chew on random things. Very dangerous position to be in.
As a kid, my thing was library paste. My mother (the worst cook ever born -- her food would gag a starving wolf) tried to discourage my "paste addiction" by making up nonsense about what went into it. Finally, I told her the paste tasted better than her cooking, which got me slapped out of the chair. As an adult I'm drawn to Doritos and Nutella -- at the same time. Hey, it's delicious!
I believe I have this. (I eat paper.) I eat it because I like the texture and I think I have been eating it more lately because I have been trying to lose weight, I would eat it to try and stop myself from eating too much food. Or it’s because I’ve been stressed out more lately…I have tried to stop myself, go cold turkey, only one little bit, etc., etc. But it’s extremely hard to stop yourself. (Hell! This is the first time I typed it out or even talk about it at all, to be honest.) I hope and wish anyone with this, (like myself.) Good luck with trying to Break this habit…
Good luck to you girl! Have u ever considered getting professional help? I am luckily not affeced by these kind of things. I qm grossed out to even eat my fingernails 😅 But I do have a hoarding problem, so I derinitly feel the compulsory nature of it. People tell you not to do it, cause its pointles and it hurts you, but you cant help it...
Do you think you eat it more when your stressed? Because if thats the cause then you should discuss this with someone that can help. Ik this isn’t as serious as an addiction like gasoline or paper but I bite my nails all the time and I always been like that. Eventually I managed to get myself not to do it, but the only time I do it is when I get anxiety or I’m super stressed out. The point I’m making is stress is like a leading factor in getting addicted to certain thing in your mind may feel like it makes you feel better but in actuality its detrimental to your health. And you probably have xylophagia, which is a form of pica.
I eat cotton balls too. I tend to eat unedible stuff like plastic since I was young but I wanted to stop. So now I eat cotton because it gives me the same feeling as eating plastic, but its not as harmful since cotton is just a bunch of fibers
I know it's not the same, but god that speech really resonated with my trichotillomania. The amount of times I've wanted to stop, and how tired I've become over the years because of it. I learned how to do makeup young just so no one would notice that I didn't have eyelashes.
This sounds incredibly painful to me. But as others have said, and as I can also understand, the amount of pain gets justified by the sense of satisfaction. Like, there was another episode of this show where the woman scratched her head until there was an open wound. Here's to mental and physical healing
It’s really fascinating to see this pop up, I’ve been recently learning about Pica a good bit and while I usually don’t love Chicago Med for it’s medical science, I feel they explained and respected Pica pretty well!
Does it bother anyone else that when he was v0miting and unresponsive, they pulled him onto his back rather than rolling him sideways to drain his mouth of fluids and avoid aspiration? It bothered me SO MUCH, they put him at huge risk. If someone has decreased mental faculties with no neck injury and is v0miting, you absolutely must ROLL THEM ON THEIR SIDE with their mouth facing downward so gravity clears their mouth and throat. Aspiration pneumonia is a huge complication and can cause the rest of the treatments to be less effective due to reduced oxygen absorption.

I have absolutely zero intention of engaging in any sort of nasty conflict with you over something so mundane. If you're looking for someone to be cruel to you because you process conflict more readily than you process affection or healthy conversations, I suggest you look elsewhere. You caught me on a Low Symptoms day and I'm not in Fight or Flight mode from C-PTSD and Anxiety Disorder, for the first time in over a week. I am Autistic and one of my Special Interests is weird medical things. It bothers me when TV shows blatantly get the BIG stuff wrong. If someone is unresponsive and has fluids building up or coming out of their mouth and/or nose, you ALWAYS roll them sideways so they don't aspirate their vomitus and die from the worst form of aspiration pneumonia possible. Stomach acid is highly corrosive, so inhaling your own vomit can easily cause chemical burns on the inside of your airways, in addition to the irritation from liquid and/or particulate matter invading a space meant for Air and Mucus Only.

Yes, you can teach yourself techniques to stop compulsions but if you can’t then consider a therapist. It may help to talk to others who also struggle with them, you just have to find what works for you.
I dealt with a a compulsive behavioral issue. I sought help and was able to overcome the problem. I implore others to with the same issues to seek help. Even if the idea of not engaging in the behavior terrifies you like it did with me. Your brain can gradually rewire itself so you eventually wont have to battle the urge. Now I look back and cant even understand how the behavior was ever something I couldn't stop. And its a source of pride that I took the steps and did the work to solve the issue. And IT DID NOT happen overnight. And THERE WERE setbacks along the way. Best wishes to anyone reading this that can relate.
Gasoline is also a carcinogen, so cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagas, stomach, intestines, colon, and lungs can happen. Possibly even in other organs if the toxins get into the blood via the small intestine.
Pica is a dangerous condition to have. It’s not something to snicker at. I’ve never heard of anything like this, but I have heard of people eating dirt and hair. There was also a guy named Michel Lotito, who ate bicycles for a living. He liked the oily parts best. I have read that recently pica has been tied to OCD.
I was suffering from pica various stages . When I was young I eat a lot of dirt so I become anemic . I didn't told anyone about eating dirt but my mother secretly caught me eating dirt without informing me she took me to the hospital and discuss it with my family doctor luckily my doctor understand my condition and treated me very well and I gradually stopped eating dirt . Now I am 28 three years back I was struggling with depression again I started to eat dirt , raw rice so I become severally anemic . Once again I was treated very well . Thank god .
As someone who had pica, most people dont understand the urge that it drives you, i got over it with help of profesional doctors, but yes im glad it was on this show .. and yes if wondering i drinked dish detergent.
That's a huge psychological leap to compulsive disorder, particularly something as rare and as unstudied as PICA. There are a thousand much more likely things it could be given the situation that they never discussed.
Yeah… they talked with him for like a couple minutes total. After such a short amount of time it would be completely irresponsible to diagnose someone with a mental illness. Psychiatric evaluations are not and should not be this short.
Pica isnt that uncommon. It goes along with a lot of other issues very frequently. Things like gas, yeah that isnt super common. But its not a rare issue
Was looking into Pica a while ago and I think I used to have it. I would bite into bar soap all the time and chew on it, never actually swallow. Sometimes my tongue would start to burn from it and I would only stop if it effected my regular meals(if my tongue hurt so bad that it hurt to eat). I’ve had anemia for a while now but my iron isn’t as low as it was back then. I also would watch vids of people eating chalk, soap and clay. I would listen to videos of ppl crushing and eating chalk like it was music. It got to a point where my parents took my phone away for listening to it so much. I don’t chew on soap anymore but I do still watch those vids from time to time.
@@Lana-fp1iz that's good. You have my support...however , you said your parents took your phone away? Hmmm, you must be young. Be safe...and live long.
I don't get why she got scolded for asking if he was feeling suicidal. That's a very normal question, not an accusation. Anytime you see a psych they'll ask if you're having thoughts of hurting yourself or hurting others. It's part of the basic questionnaire.
If I were going to med school, I want Dr. Charles as my teacher. In fact, I wish this were really in Chicago, because I live in Illinois! If this were a reality TV show, I want him as my doctor.
Marbles, pencils, batteries, thumbtacks, coins, pieces of broken lightbulbs, magnets, dryer sheets, cremated ashes of loved ones... people with Pica have been known to ingest all sorts of weird and dangerous things.
Mine is paper, tissue, and thin plastic packaging. It's likely related to my autism and sensory seeking behaviour where I just like to put stuff in my mouth and feel the textures. The tissue and paper aren't a big deal (although I try to avoided coloured or bleached paper), but the plastic one was very concerning when I was a teen. I avoided surgery and the underlying issues were addressed, but I'm pretty certain my blood is chock full of microplastics now.
Could it be sensory seeking for crunch or a papery texture? You could try rice paper or dried seaweed for a similar paper feeling. I have high impact combo type adhd (also maybe autism) and mine were eating baking soda (loved the chemically taste but stopped bc it’s bad for your stomach) and licking hammers (I had anemia and didn’t know).
It’s funny that the doctor said 7 units of blood. Like he lost every pint. Ooh Hollywood please do some research before y’all start screeching nonsense.
Okay, I know this is supposed to be taken seriously but... does anyone else think of this bit from The Simpsons? *Bart:* 🤢Oh, peeyu, what were you drinking, gasoline? *Krusty:* 🙄Yes, I was drinking gasoline, MOTHER.
Yeah I chew on wax like gum. (specifically fluffy towels yankee candle) I’ve always loved the smell of laundry and the wax tastes like it smells but without any burning sensation like detergents cause and with less chemicals and stuff. Honestly it could be really harmful and I don’t know it. If anyone knows how harmful/not harmful this is I’d appreciate any advice.
Usually non toxic but your issue may come in the form of a blockage if you’ve consumed a lot. This is likely difficult to tell as if you’re chewing it, no one has any idea how much you accidentally consume each time. It is not doing anything positive for you or your health
Chew wax thats actually made to chew. Theres honeycombs and theres chewing wax made for people with cigarette addictions. Try spitting out the wax afterwards. Please. Its not good for you.
I used to do that too. The Yankee candles have the best chewing texture 😅 my go to was "Beach Towel"... Couldn't do it with my Bath and Body Works ones lol
Consuming gasoline? Jesus. Even coming from a medical condition, it’s hard to believe that someone can have the compulsive desire to do that. I’m not overly surprised though because I once watched a tv show about addictions (can’t remember the name; wasn’t a medical drama) where a woman had the addiction of consuming mattresses, specifically the foam-like material that makes up mattresses. It was a bit disturbing to watch, let alone comprehend.
Its really hard to understand, unless you've actually been through it. Your body just craves the specific thing, and you just have to eat/taste it. I used to crave gasoline too, but was too scared to chug it. I would just lock it off my finger a few times a day, and that would somewhat satisfy my craving.
It was almost certainly "My Strange Addiction" on TLC. Did you notice that everyone on that show was a black woman? I wondered if they were being racist, since TLC can be exploitative, so I checked into it, and African American women make up a plurality of pica sufferers.
PIca is very debilitating depending on the obsession. The person affected knows it is wrong and is usually embarrassed about it. It's not easy to just stop, even if they know it's dangerous.
I've had the symptoms of OCD for a long time though I've never been diagnosed. The stars line up perfectly for it to be true. I really do appreciate that this disease gets some time in the spotlight. While I am not personally affected by the condition, I am aware of an extremely harrowing story of someone I knew who nearly perished from the consequences. I can't even imagine putting that stuff anywhere near my lips!!! Just the smell alone would make me lose it. My heart goes out to anyone who is struggling with this condition.
Yeah. Usually inhaling and ingesting hazardous substances and chemicals can have catastrophic consequences.
It doesnt necessarily have to be gasoline, but yeah PICA is a struggle to deal with not only because of the physiological damage but also the stigma and sense of shame in engaging in irrational, compulsive behavior
There’s literally a show where a girl is smelling n drinking it.
I knew a girl who always wanted to ride in the car on trips to fill up the car. She'd become intoxicated by the smell of gas like kids love candy. She also loved the smell of bleach. Never ingested it. Just the smell was enough.

I almost panic if I run out and will go out of my way to buy 3 more bags for the week. But I can't bring myself to care. Any problem I get I can fix. I just need ice. Whether I'm hot or cold. When I was younger like elementary school age I did that too but my mom basically banned me from eating ice by not making or getting any
Please please be careful eating ice and try to take iron tablets.

Well at least ice is edible. Just frozen water. Gasoline is gonna kill you
that's my issue.
@@xeniamartin5297
I know exactly what you mean.

Yeah, my anemia was caused by a very low iron deficiency.
I've not heard of this in real life, but its possible. If someone is unresponsive and has fluids building up or coming out of their mouth and/or nose, you ALWAYS roll them sideways so they don't aspirate their vomitus and die from the worst form of aspiration pneumonia possible. Stomach acid is highly corrosive, so inhaling your own vomit can easily cause chemical burns on the inside of your airways, in addition to the irritation from liquid and/or particulate matter invading a space meant for Air and Mucus Only.
what bothers me is the nurse squeezing the BVM way to fast
@@ellaquincy5037 oh yea i have basic medical training too ik what they were doing wrong 😭 i was just saying not to take it so seriously nothing major🙂 also no one ever gets my handle so thank you for the appreciation 😂
As a recovering alcoholic (you're not supposed to say recovered) even I know that well.
This almost reminds me of one of the episodes of House M.D. where a little boy with autism who struggled with speech and eye contact had eaten sand from the sand box and developed some worm-like creatures in one or both of his eyes. Very scary
I’ve seen that one
Linkkkkk
This.
I’m surprised more of the comments aren’t about autism.
@@liannapfister8255 me too. It’s sad that it’s barely talked about.
I might have had Pika as well,I love the smell of gasoline,my Dad saw how much I loved the smell when I was young and told me how when he was little his dog Bipper licked up gasoline and died, set me straight, I'm still addicted to the smell but my curiosity of its taste is long gone. Gotta thank my Dad for sure.
as someone who has pica and also loves the smell of gasoline, hearing the sentence "his dog bipper licked up gasoline and died" is the funniest terrifying thing ive ever heard
I love the smell too but never had a desire to taste it. I just smell it when I go to fill my car up
It tastes exactly like it smells lol
I also love the smell of petrol
It's smell is so nice
Some people eat soap or sand or sponge. I hope they can get healthy again
Wish psychiatrists were like this in real life! Does anyone know about how to stop a complsion?
Yes, you can teach yourself techniques to stop compulsions but if you can’t then consider a therapist. It may help to talk to others who also struggle with them, you just have to find what works for you.
What’s sad is that pilots are afraid to be honest and get help in fear of being grounded by the FAA. Sad
Oliver Platt is a national treasure.
Could you Imagine this as an Episode of House M.D.
I feel like there must be something similar on the show. It lasted for so long.
There is an episode where a autistic little boy has PICA- it’s with the og team but idk what season (It’s called Eye Worms)
I see this illness alot on some African church video when pastors are " casting out demons" so this is interesting
Hanty wehdun!🙄😒😒
why are you watching videos about that?
Ngl, paint smells really good, I love that smell. That and brand new markers.
at least he admit it, thank God for that.
I remember that one girl who was addicted to drinking gasoline on an addiction documentary except she was real
I swear....the girl that works with the Psychologist always pisses me off
She always blames everything on mental illness it sucks
Always !!
Thank god .
“I’m sorry say it again?”
Sir you *heard him!*
Well yeah, but it’s a tv show so they they can’t really go through the thousands of different possibilities in a 45 minute show
pica isn’t rare? my whole family has it or had it at some point. it’s like 30% of the population or at least in children.
Pica isnt that uncommon. It goes along with a lot of other issues very frequently. Things like gas, yeah that isnt super common. But its not a rare issue
Every time I see this show, my first thought is ready to rumble. Jimmy King!
As someone who had this …. This was interesting to learn that it can be tied into ocd
It was discussed also in svu. He licked paint in his toy cars, damaged his brain then he murdered his doctor who molested him. His thinking is 8yo
Hello Lana...how are you now? I hope you're ok...
@@vernonsmith6176 sorry I’m just now seeing this, I’m ok. I bit into soap once since this comment but other than that it’s been good
@@Lana-fp1iz that's good. You have my support...however , you said your parents took your phone away? Hmmm, you must be young. Be safe...and live long.
@@vernonsmith6176 Thank you so much, same to you. And yea I’m 17 lol
Next time listen to the damn doctor😂
I don't get why she got scolded for asking if he was feeling suicidal. That's a very normal question, not an accusation. Anytime you see a psych they'll ask if you're having thoughts of hurting yourself or hurting others. It's part of the basic questionnaire.
Exactly!!!
If I were going to med school, I want Dr. Charles as my teacher. In fact, I wish this were really in Chicago, because I live in Illinois! If this were a reality TV show, I want him as my doctor.
Great show stay safe yall.

Marbles, pencils, batteries, thumbtacks, coins, pieces of broken lightbulbs, magnets, dryer sheets, cremated ashes of loved ones... people with Pica have been known to ingest all sorts of weird and dangerous things.
Yea I watched that episode of My Strange Addiction too with the woman who ate her husband’s ashes. I was in total shock.
@@strawberrycherrybaby I hadn't considered that. I do love the texture and sound of both goods so I'll give it a go (next week when I have money)
I thank God they're bringing this back
Yeah I chew on wax like gum.
He drank gasoline and had LOW energy??? Must have been getting it from a watered down grocery station.
My strange addiction?
I saw on My Strange Addiction on TLC this woman was addicted to sniffing gasoline. She passed away in her early 40's. 😢
Thrid thrid thrid thrid thrid thrid nidih nidih nidih dihdih.. nidihdihdihdih
I've had the symptoms of OCD for a long time though I've never been diagnosed. The stars line up perfectly for it to be true. I just recently learned my habit of severely picking and chewing on my nails is OCD. That bloody fingers that doc was talking about? I've been struggling with that since grade school. Same with shaking my legs or feet or averting eye contact. It's like my body itches if I don't do it, especially the first 2
I feel that. I tear up my fingers and absolutely shred the inside of my mouth. In my case it might be anxiety
It's almost as disgusting as people putting a cigarette in their mouth. Almost.
I have pica as well. I love to eat raw rice, mud, a bit of cement, earthen pots, slates, chalks. All of these make my mouth water. It's addictive. Can't stop even when I try to. It's been going on for years.
Do you happen to like necco wafers? They have a similar texture to slate and chalk without the potential risk
@@edbsmartie I'm not sure if these are available in my country, but I'll definitely check. Thank you so much for your kind suggestion
Are you fine after consuming all of these for year? Just curious
@@Top5Paranormal yes i mean I do feel uneasy sometimes, I don't consume them in large amounts. :)

Never heard of DRINKING gasoline only huffing it, geez, you work on a car or engine and get a little drop of gas on you lip or the like and it BURNS!
As petty and short fused as I am, I don’t think I’d ever deal with patients in denial if I were a Doctor tbh 😂
It hit deep, OCD is similar. Some days my obessions would cause me to worry myself into such a state that by the time i got home I just wanted to be alone and cry.
All Brits watching this; "surely you mean petrol?"
Interesting show, never heard of a hospital with a psychiatrist among the ER professionals. Usually that happens if doctors call for a psych evaluation, but I’ve never heard of it being routine
I don’t know if anyone knows this but this is actually based off a really life addiction where a woman was addicted to drinking gasoline
when they say "smoking some gas" i dont think this was it
There was a case of a child on Law & Order SVU with Pica, the Doctor in that case missed it (among other circumstances)
lead episode ming saw boy eating pencil
I know Pica is a crazy condition but GASOLINE?!
"I don't drink"
Mhmm, you drink AVGAS instead.
Pics is common in children and pregnant women. I had it in both my pregnancies. I craved cement. It is not always a compulsive thing. I just craved it, then once I had my babies, it went away
Dr Charles is so chill bro
I've never crossed the line but I'm sure I probably have something like this. I thankfully have been able to prevent myself from doing it through education, willpower and therapy
Oliver looks so fresh as Dr. Charles
I noticed the heart rate monitor went up abit when he said no tbh i feel like it should be the other way because your in fight or flight or freeze
When I was a kid I loved the smell of gasoline.
Mine's the smell of a lit match and I still love it 🥰🥰🥰🥰
@Jessica Stiner I love that too lol. I have a bunch at home that I just light here and there. I blow it out and sniff it lol.
I like the smell of gasoline. ⛽ I like to smell my hands after I pump gas. 😂
As someone who is suffering from compulsions the question - Why? Oh mam I ask that my self every day, but the answer the brain gives is "because you must" and that is all...
I have heard how bad PICA is for humans but when I volunteered at a shelter a couple of dogs had it and one has to get his tail amputated because he would try to eat it and then would try to eat his kennel and stuff
I see Charles I click 0:56
I can't stand the smell if I accidentally get spill a drop of gasoline on my hands. I can't IMAGINE drinking even the tiniest amount of it.
I used to eat deodorant. My favorite was secret clear gel, specifically the lavender scent. I got a hold on my addiction, and I haven’t done it since I was like 15. Pica is no joke fr, it can be really life threatening or just plain strange lol
"Your copilot says that, at times, you seem mildly confused."
