First Impressions on Colombian Rainbow Boas, Are They Good Pets?

  • Rainbow boas aren't a difficult species to find, but they are seen less frequently in the reptile trade. I recently acquired these two Colombian rainbow boas and have gotten to care for them for a month now, so I wanted to share my first impressions on these translucent pet reptiles. What are your thoughts on this midsize, slightly more difficult species of snake?

I think they look really cool, especially their behaviour. They are active enough to be interesting, and their love of climbing means they like to climb all over your arms and neck which I would find really cool. And big enough to be impressive to a beginner, yet small enough to be safe and easy to handle. And though I usually prefer the look of snakes with a stronger pattern, this grey-brown colour makes them look very natural, which is nice.

I get a kick from the fact Rainbow boas are semi arboreal. My Brazilian rainbow boa used to enjoy climbing a good bit. Would find her climbing on her fake plants. Once found her on her plastic hide which is a model of a tree. Eventually, she decided she was no longer going to climb and instead dig in her dirt. So, I ended up pulling out the decor she used to climb on and gave her more floor space. Also, on the humidity thing at least for the Brazilian rainbow boa's. they are VERY sensitive to low humidity. I've literally took her out when she was fairly young and she started to show signs of dehydration in just a short time of her being outside, and we are talking a matter of minutes. like i'd be surprised if it was greater then 5.
on that note one day when i was looking for her i ended up breaking down the entire cage and couldn't find her. She had hidden in her little tree hide and blended in with it so well that i had placed her literally on top of her enclosure while i was looking for her X D.

They are beautiful. I would buy/adopt one from you if I could, but I don't have the space right now :/ Love the vids!

Fun fact when I was first getting into snakes Brian Bytchass was my go to. The video that made me realize hmm he’s awful was the one with the rainbow clickbait. I now know the error of my ways.
Go herping and Snake discovery the way to go 😔👊

Actually a perfect time for this to have been uploaded. I am really torn between getting another Columbian Red-Tail and a Rainbow. Done TONS of research, and I just can't decide.
Will take this video into consideration.

I do like the colors/pattern of the Brazilian rainbow boa better, but I am really impressed with how handleable these 2 individual snakes are, especially considering one is in shed!

Brandon Foss I know it’s so weird! He’s my first reptile and he’s not that hard, the only thing that can be a little difficult is the humidity. Definitely an expensive pet though

I have a blue eyed leucistic columbian rainbow boa named Lucy. Shes 5 years old. So far for me shes been a pretty good snake! She has her times where she wants to be left alone but I've never been bit or striked at! If anything versus my hypo red tail boa she just requires more humidity

I’ve always been a fan of rainbow and rubber boas. But then again my first snake was a brown and white king snake.

I dunno, I actually really like the colour of them, the right enclosure decor and I think they’d look lovely! I’m not a fan of orangey-red colours, we only have a corn snake (anery motley) right now but we will be adding two more snakes next year. This is definitely a species I will be looking at!

I do enjoy that from a distance i can see a ring pattern on these snakes as well. The iridescence doesn't show up very well on screen but i can imagine it from having seen a few irl
I can never buy from emerald scales cuz no shipping to europe but I'm sure ill find a good european breeder once I'm ready

I've never actually seen a Columbian Rainbow, but honestly I think these are even more beautiful than the Brazilian. Obviously the flashy reds and iridescence is gorgeous, but I love those warm smooth browns too. I'd love to pick up one of these darlings, but I only have a 30 gal tank sitting around, and I've been told no more snakes 😂
