  • I got Rosie, the Boa constrictor imperator almost exactly 1 year ago! She's 22 years old, 7.5 feet and had an interesting past. Her transformation was surprising, and quite fast - only in great ways! From losing weight, to becoming super docile, I go over all of the changes I've had with the largest snake in our care so far.

I honestly believe snakes have some sort of memory. I spent about a year rehabilitating a “problem” ball python to get her to be a good eater and friendly so I could rehome her. I thought I found the perfect home for her because the woman had three other ball pythons and was sending me update pictures for a while. A couple weeks ago I walked into a local reptile shop just because I was in the area and she was there. Turns out the woman’s husband said it was him or the snakes and she dumped them all at the pet store. I asked to hold her to make sure it was her and she immediately uncurled and snuggled up to my neck how she normally did when I had her. The workers said in all the time they had her she’s NEVER been that comfortable with anyone. I ended up working with them to lower the price as much as possible and I purchased her back. Now she’s home and as hungry as ever. Not shy at all like the workers described her. I have to believe she remembers being comfortable with me and knows she’s safe.

OutOfSight123 also regardless of their temperament they can definitely be pretty intimidating for a beginner keeper and nervous energy makes them less likely to be good with people. If someone is comfortable with the size and does the research they definitely could be a good beginner snake

@@sarahjayne1620 I'm glad you asked! Sonoran boas are native to Mexico and males get 5 ft, maybe 6 ft for a really big one. The Tarahumera locality of the Sonoran boas are the absolute smallest of the larger boa species and are usually not more than 5ft. Boas are thinner bodied than ball pythons so they are overall smaller snakes at the same length. There are a few island localities as well that stay pretty small, and most Central American boas are also considered dwarfs (Nicaragua/Costa Rica/etc). The females can still see 7 ft or more, but males stay small if fed properly. :)

Rosie seems like such a sweetheart 🐍❤
I was thinking, since the classroom she lived in for 20 years was always around so many people, perhaps she was desensitized to humans a little bit? I'm sure people came up to the enclosure to say hi, and having so many people always being around, she had to have noticed the humans, right? I'm assuming they didn't hurt her or anything, just threw in food every so often lol.
Idk maybe I'm overanalyzing it, but I can see the constant flow of humans having an effect on her. Love that lil Rosie ❤
Also don't underestimate what you've done for her!!! I'm sure the reason why she's so snuggly and nice is because she knows you helped her, you got her a nice warm enclosure, you clean it, you feed her yourself instead of tossing in meals, there's no way she hasn't noticed those things.

"She is now 22 years old"
    0:34 : Boops the snoot.
6:24 : I know nothing about snakes. I have hermit crabs, but based on a hermit crab's behavior, I know they can recognize each other, so there's some memory component there. I'm just going to assume that a snake is at least leagues more intelligent, so.... yeah probably. I dunno.
Lastly, I would totally listen to ASMR of Rosie. >w

The average lifespan of a captive kept Boa Constrictor is 20-30 years. It's actually impressive that she lived as long and stayed as healthy as she did living in the trash conditions she was at the school. She could live another year or another decade, but it's great you've helped her this much and she's come this far. It was great meeting you at Repti-Con and I appreciate you giving my brother advice about his Savannah Monitor. He's told me that it's already showing signs of improvement. Your videos are awesome, keep up the great work!

Right? Every individual is different and weird in their own ways, I’ve seen many species that require massive enclosures usually that love their one little 2x2 of space so the keeper will down size the enclosure as they don’t use any of it. But that causes an uproar in the people against the keeper, simply because they don’t know that this particular being just loves their comfy corner🥺 it’s truly adorable to see such a big beautiful animal just want that tiny bit of space and nothing more.

I commend you for taking her in. She looks amazing. She's come a long way. I had a reptile rescue when I lived in Virginia. I ended up being the go to for snakes mostly from our local animal control and game wardens. Most came from apartments where people were evicted or just left. Leaving their animals behind. Some still roaming free in bedrooms, no food, no water, literally some on the verge of death. Anyway, great job, you're definitely a natural for this hobby. You have an knack like old school keepers have. Same mentality. Keep being yourself and don't conform to today's so called enthusiast. Take advice etc., in stride. You're do a great job, and again, absolutely life saving decision you made. She's going to be here when you're an old guy, lol.

I live in Brazil, where these beauties are originally from. In here, we cannot have most of species of reptiles you guys have in the US, but we are allowed to raise boas, rainbow boas etc (some kind of foreign species are being commercialized now, but for refference we have only one licensed breeder of ball pythons and he sells them (wild pattern) for 5k in our coin which is really a lot. ) . So, when you told that "they'd give amazing beginner's pets" well, for us at least since we cannot have corns or whatever, they actually are our beginner's pets xD And they are gentle and docile and so great, never heard of anyone in here having problems with them at all!
I have an amazonic rainbow boa, and I love him to death, but BCC'S are so awesome that I'm making plans to get one as well xD
Loved the video, so glad to see that Rosie is doing well

I had something similar happen to me. I've always wanted a large snake but because my husband was military, we couldn't in good faith get a reptile because it would be impossible to travel with us. He got out a few years ago and I was finally ready to look for the perfect snake for our family. Thought I would get a juvenile or a small adult and be able to grow with the snake, but then I got the opportunity to adopt Button. She is a twenty year old, ten foot long female Colombian boa, and she's the sweetest thing in the world. She's never bitten anyone, never struck out. The pet store where she was raised for most of her life nearly let her die from a respiratory infection, but then her rescuer came and got her out. Took her to a vet, got her all fixed up, and then allowed me the privilege of adopting her. She's adjusting well and we're bonding. My cat isn't a fan but the kids love to watch feedings. She's in a fairly basic, but size appropriate tank right now, but we're hoping to upgrade her within the year. I'm glad Rosie is happy now and being taken care of, just like Button!

I got a ball python from a local reptile rescue and she has grown a foot in the 4yrs I have had her. Very docile and has taken well to live feeding. She is not keen on frozen thawed food and the reason I got her so cheap was she was a problem feeder. When hungry she nails them in seconds. Lightning fast. I love snakes and always wanted a larger snake. She is about 4-1/2 feet now.
