It sickened me when all the Karen Carpenter jokes were going around after she died from that eating disorder. Still sickens me when I think about it. I understand no one knew what anorexia was during that time but it was real and in a very sad and costly way she shed light on a problem that began looking for solutions after she passed. I admit I have trouble understanding the malady but I never doubted it existed.

This song was originally recorded in 1971 for their 3 studio album "Carpenters" Karen Carpenter - vocals, drums, Richard Carpenter - arranger, piano, harpsichord, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ, vocals, orchestration, Hal Blaine - drums, Jim Horn - reeds. Earl Dumler - oboe on "For All We Know", Bob Messenger - bass, reeds, Tommy Morgan - harmonica on "Rainy Days and Mondays", Joe Osborn - bass, Doug Strawn - reeds. Karens vocals were done in one take as she read the lyrics from a napkin where Richard had written them. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I would have told that to her face, because from the grave she still doing that NOW to people who were not born yet...and she looks so beautiful here before she got sick and thin from anorexia. She didn't understand we all loved her the way she was, trim or chubby, we could have cared less about that. "We loved her, we really did..."

I remember that Karen Carpenter was a very accomplished drummer. I just looked it up and see that she was ranked in the top ten drummers in Playboy's poll for years, #1 in 1975 beating out Bonham and Moon (and Peart too, I suppose). I thought she was good, but not THAT good! But that golden voice! Her purity of tone is unmatched in my experience.
@@WhimsyMeadows Oh yeah, pretty darn good too, and sing in that angelic voice at the same time without a hint of drumming effort coming through in her vocals, which is REALLY hard, just as sweet and pure as what you heard in this reaction! She wasn't the band's primary drummer but she really loved to play drums and often spent time behind the kit for a song or two and a little drum solo in their live performances and TV specials. If you look around there's some pretty good recordings on youtube.
I discovered (well I did not discover I walked into a jazz club in Los Angeles and there they were) in 1965. At that time, they were the Dick Carpenter Trio with Richard on keyboards Karen on drums (not singing) and Wes Jacobs on bass or tuba. You can hear how good a jazz drummer she was by searching for The Richard Carpenter Trio Hollywood Bowl Battle Of The Bands 1966. They did 2 songs "Iced Tea" Which Ricard wrote and a jazzed Bosa nova "Girl From Ipanema" and won the contest the recordings are from the contest. Karen was 16 in 1966. in 1968 with Bill Sissoyev as the bass player they were in a televised contest (sort of like the music show now if you win the week you are on you come back for final night) The won again only Karen was singing as she played now. Search for The Richard Carpenter Trio: Your All American Collage Show 1968 Buddy Rich said she was one of the best jazz drummers he knew.

@@WhimsyMeadows Oh yeah, pretty darn good too, and sing in that angelic voice at the same time without a hint of drumming effort coming through in her vocals, which is REALLY hard, just as sweet and pure as what you heard in this reaction! She wasn't the band's primary drummer but she really loved to play drums and often spent time behind the kit for a song or two and a little drum solo in their live performances and TV specials. If you look around there's some pretty good recordings on youtube.

I discovered (well I did not discover I walked into a jazz club in Los Angeles and there they were) in 1965. At that time, they were the Dick Carpenter Trio with Richard on keyboards Karen on drums (not singing) and Wes Jacobs on bass or tuba. You can hear how good a jazz drummer she was by searching for The Richard Carpenter Trio Hollywood Bowl Battle Of The Bands 1966. They did 2 songs "Iced Tea" Which Ricard wrote and a jazzed Bosa nova "Girl From Ipanema" and won the contest the recordings are from the contest. Karen was 16 in 1966. in 1968 with Bill Sissoyev as the bass player they were in a televised contest (sort of like the music show now if you win the week you are on you come back for final night) The won again only Karen was singing as she played now. Search for The Richard Carpenter Trio: Your All American Collage Show 1968 Buddy Rich said she was one of the best jazz drummers he knew.

The correct name of the brother and sister duo is "Carpenters" not "The Carpenters". This is also a cover version. The original recorded version is by husband-and-wife duo Delaney & Bonnie (Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett). It was first recorded under the name "Groupie (Superstar)", and was released in December 1969 as the B-side of the Delaney & Bonnie single "Comin' Home". The full credit on the single was "Delaney & Bonnie and Friends featuring Eric Clapton."
This song is written and composed by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell; Eric Clapton added some embellishments to the music. Rita Coolidge came up with the song idea, based on observing the relationships of female groupies with rock stars in the late 1960s.

This song was so powerful in their musical catalogue....they had done some beautiful songs before this, but I always feel this was on another level....their next song that Karen sings which many regard as her best vocal is Neil Sedaka's SOLITAIRE....showing her style kept getting better and better....
