Many rock fans would make fun of them to their friends as not being 'cool', and then listen to them at home as a 'guilty pleasure'. Cher sang it and so did Bette Middler. Richard Carpenter wrote it in notes in the Carpenters "From the Top" That Bette Middler was singing it on Johnny Carson, he thought it would be a hit for Karen. Anyway the song is about a groupie who had a fling with her favorite star. He leaves and she fantasizes that he's coming back.

I am 71, so I heard Karen from the beginning! My favorite song Is " Rainy Days and Mondays." I have depression and to me, it's a song about my mother and me. I cried when I heard she died. The sad part was she was doing fine and was considered cured when she died. She had done so much damage to her body before she got well, it damaged her heart to the point where it quit anyway.

That's because she claimed herself a drummer that could sing... But a drummer first. She didn't like being out from her drum kit. My mother actually knew the carpenter family they lived in lynwood California at the time. Tragedy with this one. A one time only voice.
There is no other group that propels me back to my childhood in the seventies as much as The Carpenters. They were always on the radio it seemed, as well as having so many TV specials. You'll have to check out some of their Christmas specials they used to have on network TV now that we are in December.

Straight up, I love when wifey joins you. I watch a lot of different channels and most of the time when someone brings their spouse into the mix, I'm not a fan because the spouse is generally "trying" too hard. That's why I appreciate your wifey. She just genuine. You get a virtual smack on the wrist for introducing Karen as your side piece. Also, it was the era of "Twiggy" (if you don't know who that is she was a super skinny super model) and Jordache tight jeans. I grew up as a teenager during that time and curvy girls were not acceptable.
Karen's voice was so unique, so captivating. She just drew you in and you were hooked. There is a very good documentary about them where her brother talks so eloquently and with so much love for his sister and the frustration he and his parents felt of not only watching her waste away from anorexia but then the utter devastation when she died.

There is no other group that propels me back to my childhood in the seventies as much as The Carpenters. They were always on the radio it seemed, as well as having so many TV specials. You'll have to check out some of their Christmas specials they used to have on network TV now that we are in December.
She has always been my top favorite female singer. I still often listen to her music. The world lost one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century. Yes, please do more carpenters.

Dude I love that look in your eye at the end there. Karen had the voice of an Angel. Glad you know some of the back story about her and so happy that you and your wife watched her together. I am a Stones, Zeplin, Alice Cooper and just a rocking mo fo from the 70s guy. I always loved Karen.

Only a handful of people can sing the songs; the notes slow and long as she does. You have to have an exceptionally rare voice to do that.

A lot of us have continued to miss Karen during the decades that have passed since she died. We still weep when we hear her voice. That is why so many listen to Tori Holub's covers of Carpenter's song - she sounds just like her.

She had a lower than average 3 octave vocal range. It was in this lower range that set her apart from other female singers. Karen Carpenter once said about her lower range, “The money’s in the basement.”
@@donakmarie She was a mezzo who was among the first to take advange of the newly invented dynamic response microphone's ability to selectively enhance the lower frequencies when held very close to the mouth, as she had to given the small size of her voice. A lot of pop singers are "contraltos" today, very few natural ones however.

I remember reading that Karen Carpenter did not want to be a frontwoman and lead singer and just wanted to play the drums. It is amazing that such a gifted singer would feel that way. Thankfully, she changed her mind and shared her gift with the world.

Straight up, I love when wifey joins you. I watch a lot of different channels and most of the time when someone brings their spouse into the mix, I'm not a fan because the spouse is generally "trying" too hard. That's why I appreciate your wifey. She just genuine. You get a virtual smack on the wrist for introducing Karen as your side piece. Also, it was the era of "Twiggy" (if you don't know who that is she was a super skinny super model) and Jordache tight jeans. I grew up as a teenager during that time and curvy girls were not acceptable.

Karen's voice was so unique, so captivating. She just drew you in and you were hooked. There is a very good documentary about them where her brother talks so eloquently and with so much love for his sister and the frustration he and his parents felt of not only watching her waste away from anorexia but then the utter devastation when she died.

There’s a movie about Karen Carpenter’s life story that’s excellent. I think it’s still on youtube. Her mother always favored Richard and never acknowledged Karen’s incredible talent. 😢
