Leaving Coma out? That song is the best they every did. Masterpiece. Locomotive's lyrics are brilliant. Taking out Coma and Locomotive and keeping Back Off B!tch seems bizarre.
Instead of 14 i got 16 : [in no particular order] Dust n' Bones. Dont Cry. Bad 0bsession. Double Talkin Jive. November Rain. The Garden. Don't Damn Me. Coma. Civil War. 14 Years. Knockin on Heaven's Door. Shotgun Blues. Pretty Tied up. Locomotive. Estranged. You Could be Mine.
Being in 8th grade at the time, it was such an interesting time for music. When “Use Your Illusions” came out, I only hate enough money to buy 1 album. I picked “Use Your Illusions 2” because of Terminator 2
They dont need fixing! Except for My World. As a fan, waiting 4 years for the Illusion set to come out, i was like the more songs the better. If they released 60 songs i would have bought it!
I had the notion to do this myself a couple of weeks ago, I whittled it down to 12 tracks, 58 minutes. Side 1 Right Next Door to Hell Dust N' Bones Perfect Crime 14 Years Bad Obsession Locomotive Side 2 You Could Be Mine Bad Apples Shotgun Blues Yesterdays Garden of Eden Coma
This is always a fun exercise. Double LPs such as Use Your Illusion, Exile, The White Album, Physical Grafitti, all would be amazing as a single disc. But my feeling now is there would be that much less music to enjoy from these bands. Especially in the case of G&R where there were so few albums in the catalog before Chinese.
I think those extra songs would've been great as B-sides, maybe extra songs on a greatest hits or live album, because, agreed, you want more music, not less. Thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
About to listen to this but before I do - here are my 14 songs....So lets see what you have.................. Side 1 Right Next Door to Hell Dust N Bones Dont Cry Perfect Crime Double Talkin Jive Dont damn Me Coma Side 2 Civil War 14 Years Breakdown Pretty Tied Up Locomotive Estranged You Could be Mine So now ive heard your list.....I don't think you can call Civil War a ballad - its about War, Genocide and Death 🙂 Sorry, but Locomotive is absolutely superb. If you think that guitar playing at the end is a mess then im gobsmacked! Cool vid. Enjoyed it.
Hey, thanks, Brother, for watching and commenting. As far as ballads go, I've always considered a ballad to be a slower, softer song that either tells a story or is about a relationship, so by that definition, I think Civil War works as a ballad. Anyway, thanks again man.
I definitely agree that cutting certain songs was tough. Also, I gave myself an extra challenge by making sure my "album" was under 80 minutes. My track list: 1. You Could Be Mine 2. Right Next Door To Hell 3. Perfect Crime 4. Yesterdays 5. Back Off Bitch 6. November Rain 7. Breakdown 8. Shotgun Blues 9. Garden Of Eden 10. Don't Damn Me 11. Dead Horse 12. Estranged 13. Coma
I was so disappointed when I heard those albums. Doing a double album for your second major release is a huge risk that few bands can pull off. I’m all for bands evolving and experimenting, but it seems like they were trying to write beyond their abilities… or more accurately, Axels ability. The only songs I like are Right Next Door to Hell Don’t Cry Pretty Tied Up Civil War You Can Be Mine November Rain. Bad Obsession Six songs out of what …30 is really bad.
I completely here you, man. I think they knew they were falling apart and figured they'd better release as much shit as possible before it happened. Thanks for watching, Brother.
It would be nice to hear demos of Early '' you could be mine'' without the very long drum intro(, I like the main part of the song but never thought the lyrics made sense) and '' why do you look at me when you hate me? '' with duff only singing.
Fixed or ruined? Man I had to stop you at around 2:50 in because you're wrong. I liked appetite but for me it's more like appetizer because I didn't really fall in love with gnr until the illusion albums. I feel like while appetite is great if they had just kept doing that then they world have just became another generic 80s rock band that fell into obscurity like a lot of other bands from that era. I really like what the piano and other instruments bring to the table. And while Welcome to the Jungle and Its so easy rock they're about as deep as a mud puddle compared to Estranged, Coma, Breakdown ect. And You could be mine is one of my favorite hard rock songs ever. I like most all of these albums but maybe some of you don't. Can't you just listen to the ones you do like or do the ones you don't need to just not exist? I like a broader spectrum of music so I'm really glad your career as their producer didn't take off. Lol.
i agree with most of what you said. i personally skip welcome to the jungle every single time (once i re-upped to the cd version from cassette) i listen to appetite. it's okay, but it's my least favorite song on the album. breakdown is my favorite gnr song.
Of course I can just listen to what I want to listen to, and avoid what I don't want to listen to. It's just a video for fun, don't take it more seriously than it needs to be taken.
I’d reduce both albums to 10 tracks, but I do think there’s enough great material to still justify the double LP. That said, you nailed this! With your tracklist, the album would’ve been better.
I think Izzy’s songs are gold hers mine Civil War Dust N Bones Dont’ Cry You Ain’t The First Bad Obsession Double Talking Jive November Rain Don’t Damn Me Dead Horse Coma Yesterdays Locomotive Estranged You Could Be Mine Although You Could Be Mine could easily be left off because it was on the Terminator soundtrack months earlier. So maybe take that off for Back off Bitch
The garden is one of the best songs on that album... By far... Just saying😊. In the 90s they did out the best songs on one album. I had it on cassette .
I was waiting for this... My thoughts. 1.) Dust N Bones is mandatory on this album. I get you don't care for the blues stuff, but that song is so dark and Izzy's voice works so well for it. 2.) Get In The Ring wasn't good in 1991 and is dated now. I want to hear a kick ass rock song, not Axl bitch about people. 3.) I get the "no covers" angle, and I hate Live and Let Die, but Knockin is such a great song. Has to be on the album. 4.) Yesterdays always sounded "lazy" to me. I wrote that same song around a campfire once. Not a bad song, but cliche and disposable. 5.) Double Talkin Jive is a kick ass tune. I would have found a spot for it... or just extend the album to 15 tracks. lol... Great vid Guru.
Totally agree on Get in the Ring. Then and now, hokey throw away song that I couldn't be bothered to listen to again. Both the covers were great but, they're so overplayed! No room for either of them on my album ;^)
Hey, Sean, thanks for sharing your thoughts, man, and I completely get your disagreements! Haha. Thanks for supporting what I do here, Brother, I appreciate it.
When you first brought up this point awhile back I thought you were off base but when you actually sit down and go through it song by song… I you have a really good point. If these were all on one album, it would have been like a hysteria, thriller, back in black and appetite styled album where almost every damn song was a chart topping single. I’m going to give these a relisten in the order you put them in and see what I think. Either way, It’s a fitting end to the hair metal era, warts and all.
Hey, thanks, man. And you're right, this was kind of the end of the hair metal era, great point. What could've been... Hey, Brother, thanks for watching and supporting the channel, man, I appreciate it.
After Appetite was so strong start to finish, this was a bloated filler loaded exercise. I cut a ton out for myself and just had the following left which embarrassingly for them included the 2 covers 1. You could be mine 2. Pretty tied up 3. Civil War 4. Knockin on heavens door 5. Nov rain 6. Live and let die 7. Don’t cry 8. Coma
@@leemires5315 i cut singles yesterday, estranged, and aint it fun. Coma and pretty tied up weren’t singles and I only rate You Could be mine ahead of them. But hey I like meat and potatoes rock. All the fluff and artsyness is just not my thing and it’s one thing to “grow” into this over time as a band but they just started and as it turned out just stopped too as they flamed out ridiculously fast
Right next door to hell Live and let die Don't cry Perfect crime Back off bitch November rain Garden of eden Dead horse Coma Civil war Get in the ring Locomotive Estranged You could be mine I don't like the album version of Knockin on heavens door, but live it was great.
Yeah, it was a longer process than I thought it would be, haha. Kept listening and relistening, and taking songs off, then adding something back on. In another week the list could change, but I think I got it the way I want it. Appreciate you watching, man.
I agree completely with UYI being a single pretty decent 10 to 14 song release. All the other songs that don’t make the cut? Bonus tracks on other releases. After buying these two CDs on a budget without a lot of extra money and then listening to them a good deal, well, this was pretty much the end of me caring about new G ‘n R or buying their stuff at full price. Another great video, keep it up! I’d say give the bluesy stuff more of a chance: Great White, Cinderella, Radioactive Cats come to mind, did it right. Last thing: not a big fan of synth keys but bands that can use the piano correctly are amazing IMHO. I listen to Savatage’s Streets all the time, the piano with Jon Oliva is amazing.
I'm right with you--the extra tracks would have been great for an EP or additional songs on a best of. I'm not against keyboards, but when you fall in love with the band during Appetite, and then get a dramatic change... it can be a bit much. Anyway, I love some of the keyboard songs--I think Estranged is amazing. Appreciate you watching and supporting what I do, man, seriously.
This was a lot of fun, especially cause after previous videos, I've been curious to see which songs you would pick for a single disc Use Your Illusion. I admittedly mostly listen to Appetite when I'm in the GNR mood, but this got me to listen to both Illusion albums again. I have to say, after relistening, I like these albums more than I thought, and I have a lot of nostalgia for both. It reminded me why Pretty Tied Up and Estranged are two of my favorite GNR songs
Oh, I absolutely still go back to Appetite. There's definitely great stuff on the Illusions, but with so much filler, I always think of them as a disappointment. This playlist-in my opinion--makes it a dramatically better single album than what we got.
I would LOVED for you to have taken those 14 songs and create a NEW running order. With all those other tracks having been bounced, the energy, and flow of the music is completely different. Maybe a follow up video!!! 👍
In my opinion your list is perfect like the exact songs I would’ve picked and kept the only song I would’ve kept is perfect crime. I love your channel and keep on rocking.
Totally Agree with you , bloated and also Slash playing atm breaks my heart , Slash playing it’s totally the opposite what Slash was about , he was soulfully with great tone and amazing understanding of how much to play, nowadays Slash is like a Locomotive driver that is rushing to drive to next station to finish and go on his lunch break , he’s playing is really amazing technically wise and KILLA speeding solos with unmistakable perfection but that’s not what Slash was about back in the 80’s & 90’s and Slash’s playing Nowadays doesn’t excite me anymore , it feels to me Slash lost his soul and he’s out there to prove he’s a KILLA guitarist what he is undoubtedly, but he’s going in the wrong direction no soul just lots of speeding solos
My 15: Right Next Door to Hell - Live and Let Die - You Could Be Mine - November Rain - The Garden - Civil War - Garden of Eden - Breakdown - Don't Cry - Pretty Tied Up - Locomotive - Don't Damn Me - Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Estranged - Coma.
I remember when UYI 1&2 came out. I was in college. Pretty cool time for music. There are probably 3 or 4 songs on each album that I skip when I occasionally go back and listen to them. I have to admit that both albums have somewhat grown on me over the years and I tend to prefer some of the deeper cuts now.
My list is VERY close to yours… I agree with dropping the covers (especially since knocking on heaven’s door was already released on the Days of Thunder Soundtrack). Live & Let Die should have been a B side or given to a James Bond soundtrack. I’d drop Civil War & You Could Be Mine since they were originally released earlier & save them for a Greatest Hits album… I’d also drop Pretty Tied Up (my toughest cut) and I’d keep 14 Years, The Garden and Coma instead (I love the Don’t Cry, November Rain, Estranged Trilogy and Coma feels like the 4th part to that).
I’m going to just keep it as a double album and in no order but I did choose a song for both album openers UYI 1 1. Dust n’ bones 2. Live and let die 3. Don’t cry 4. You ain’t the first 5. Double talkin’ jive (album opener) 6. November rain 7. The garden 8. Don’t damn me 9. Dead horse 10. Coma UYI 2 1. Civil war 2. 14 years 3. Yesterday 4. Knockin’ on heaven’s door 5. Get in the ring 6. Breakdown 7. Pretty tied up 8. So fine 9. Estranged 10. You could be mine (album opener) I love the song civil war but it just seamed strange as an opening song. Thank you for doing this guru. Keep it going brother 🤘🏼👍🏼
Right, wasn't Civil War just a fuckin' awkward song to open an album? Thanks for sharing your list, man, and for always supporting the channel, I appreciate it, Brother.
I completely agree that these albums needed trimmed down! I did a similar video to this a while ago and honestly I don't remember exactly how I did it but we did keep alot of the same songs, at least on Illusion II lol
I whittled mine down to one double album as opposed to the two double albums we got. I went into it with vinyl in mind, so there are a couple tracks that I left on more to balance the run times as best as I could. CD/LP 1: 01. You Could Be Mine 02. Perfect Crime 03. Dust N' Bones 04. Back Off Bitch 05. You Ain't The First 20:03 06. Bad Obsession 07. Don't Cry 08. Double Talkin' Jive 09. November Rain 21:52 CD/LP 2 10. Pretty Tied Up 11. Civil War 12. 14 Years 13. Breakdown 23:14 14. Garden Of Eden 15. Knockin' On Heaven's Door 16. Yesterdays 17. Coma 21:07
This was a fun watch. I happen to only dislike: my world and get in the ring. I enjoy the UYI albums as a whole. I’ve seen various videos and have had conversations with friends putting their favs into a single album. I’ve never heard many people have the same single album. I think UYI is a celebration of all the elements that made up what GNR was about. Hope you don’t mind, I decided to play along. I don’t have 14 songs. I have 15. I used the logic of, “can these songs fit on an 80 minute burnable CD” and I got these 15 songs. The order of tracks would be: 1. Yesterdays (IMHO a killer opening track. Especially following the beast that Appetite was. Lyrically, I think this song sets the tone with how bad Axl wanted to destroy Appetite) 2. Bad Obsession (I’m a guitar player and I’m a sucker for Honky Tonk Blues influenced rock) 3. You could be mine 4. Don’t Cry (Original) 5. Live And Let Die (It’s a cover but for me, this cover outshines many GNR originals) 6. Perfect Crime 7. Double Talkin Jive 8. Back Off Bitch 9. Dust N Bones 10. You Ain’t The First 11. So Fine (Love this track and its quirkiness) 12. The Garden 13. Estranged 14. November Rain 15. Coma The only 2 songs that are super hard for me to cut out are: 14 years and Pretty tied up. However, with the exception of 2 songs, I love the whole experience. I’m a random viewer with an opinion and it’s all about enjoying the music we love. The discussion of UYI as 1 album always brings me to the same answer…GNR were rad, music means alot to us fans, and UYL showed us how a band we love won’t always make a record that will speak to every single fan the same. That’s powerful. And it’s incredibly cool. I like Steven and Matt. I think Matt’s style fit the production of this album and tour. Would it sound better with Steven? Who knows? I like both drummers so I don’t have an opinion either way. I see both sides. I’m also an odd ball because I either love really short albums/EPs or a long record that takes us on a journey. I feel UYI does that. Cheers! Keep up the great videos. Let’s all enjoy music and respect our fellow friends who love rock. No sense in tearing each other down over an opinion.
I've had an Illusions playlist with 13 songs for a long time. I had a few different than yours but, you weren't too far off. I even added one extra track to get to 14 and bumped two of my picks to add Breakdown and Pretty Tied Up as a compromise. (The covers are good but, I agree that they shouldn't take up space on this album. Besides, they're so overplayed at this point I don't need to hear them again as long as I live.) So, my Gn'R Used Illusions album runs like this: 01) Don't Cry (original) 02) Back Off B!tch 03) Double Talkin' Jive 04) November Rain 05) The Garden 06) Don't Damn Me 07) Civil War 08) Yesterdays 09) Breakdown 10) Pretty Tied Up 11) Locomotive (complicity) 12) Estranged
I'd probably be even more ruthless and turn it into a 10 track album and I'd keep the covers. It would then be one of the greatest albums of all time. ua-cam.com/play/PLeOvkOR5R013LYD1-kUvbjAa7pWj2IUQs.html
Dude, thanks so much for this! In a way, I've kinda thought about doing the same thing, but you absolutely blew it out of the water. I don't have any changes at all to what you just presented. For me, Civil War is the ultimate track. Pretty tied up is right there, as well as Estranged. As a sidenote, I stood in line at midnight in State College, Pennsylvania for that goddamn horrible Pearl Jam album. My buddy and I took it back to our dorm room and listened to it, and we were beyond disappointed by that shocking piece of shit. It goes to show, putting on a black T-shirt and a flannel in 1991 could get you chics, but it didn't guarantee anything about the quality of the music.
Haha, I love the Pearl Jam story--that's fuckin' awesome. Hey, Brother, thanks for the kind words and supporting the channel, man, I really appreciate it.
I did play a game with a couple of mates a while back where I suggested they were the producer of AFD at the time and the album was going to be 16 tracks. Reason being that You could be mine, perfect crime, back off bitch and don’t cry we’re all written around the same time as the appetite stuff . Anyway I told them they had to be included in the track listing but was curious about the running order. What was interesting was that we all had different ideas but I think we all still opened with jungle and ended with rocket queen 🤷♂️
we clearly don't like guns n roses for the same reasons. haha. and that's cool. i have done this exercise a few times, so i don't remember the order i had the songs in, but i know civil war was first and coma was last. i agree, no covers. i also made sure to keep it under 80 minutes. my process was to list all the songs that could potentially make it, and then star the ones i couldn't live without. luckily that put me at, i believe, 78:43. 1. dust n bones 2. don't cry 3. you ain't the first 4. double talkin' jive 5. november rain 6. don't damn me 7. coma 8. civil war 9. breakdown 10. locomotive 11. estranged 12. you could be mine the cuts: 14 years, yesterdays, get in the ring, shotgun blues, pretty tied up
Wait until I you see my 1985 episode when I start talking about bands like The Outfield and NIght Ranger... then my credibility is really going out the fuckin' door. ;-)
'Fixing' the Illusion albums has been one of my hobbies for the last couple of years. But, I would have 20 songs. 12 normal length tracks on disc 1 8 mostly long tracks on disc 2
Appetite was a one in a millon album, we'll never see the likes of it again. And it remains to this day my favorite album all time. And honestly, we were lucky to get that much from this group of 5 distinct persons. It was never meant to last, and couldn't possibly hold together. However Illusions is what separated Guns from almost everyone else, certainly the " hair metal " bands. The musicianship, the lyrics, the arrangements, the vocal stylings are really, really, untouchable. And some the songs on Illusions are just......impossible to describe. Estranged, Locomotive, Coma, Breakdown, are better songs in everyway than anything in Appetite. Although November Rain is beloved, I never really dug it. I wish they kept the old demo style of Don't Cry ( which is the greatest demo song ever). 14 yrs?....my God better than anything the Stones never wrote. There were some clunkers, nevermind My World. And certainly some songs better left on a album of B sides. Knockin would of been better on a covers album, along with Live and Let Die, KOHD is just too played out and nothing beats their version from 88 to 90. And balls out rockers like Don't Damn Me, and Perfect crime are serverly underrated. Damn I wish these guys could have conquered their demons and stayed together longer. Its nice to see them all happy and getting along well together now. They finally look happy. But they are a shell of what they were . Fortus is the only real one out of the other members worth anything. And Dizzy Reed owes the devil his soul when he dies. I hope one day those 5 can just play one show together. Just the classic 5.
This is James Anthony I never saw anyone breakdown these two albums before I don't think but I liked your list it would have been better if GNR did it this way insted of all that added filler my favorite song between both albums is You Could Be Mine I know it's what I think GNR should be I totaly agree with this video Anthony keep on rockin my friend
Yeah, that would have been a good idea for the extra songs, absolutely. B-sides, an EP, or extra songs on a Greatest Hits or Live album. Hey, Brother, thanks for watching.
Soundgarden had the B-side game perfected. First stop at every used CD store - finally found SOMMS in 1998. And then, towards the end of your run, you get to release a compilation.
... but I think "You Could Be Mine" probably should be kept off the hypothetical merged album, and used to drive sales of the T2 soundtrack. I bought Coneheads, I surely would've bought this.
One of the great debates . We hard core Guns fans seemingly will wait forever for that grit and snarl of Its So Easy or Rocket Queen . Looking back , Illusions was the sound of a band imploding . Axl going one way , Slash and Duff going another , Izzy gone (Love JuJu Hounds ) . With my single shot CD player , I wore these records out in Jr High . Dead Horse , Pretty Tied Up , Yesterday was short and kinda Southern Rock , Breakdown is cool . But very little of that grit and venom from AOD . On Spaghetti, the Human Beings and Hair of The Dog covers had that bite . But I feel AOD was a moment in time , and is gone forever . That General thing I heard , terrible like new Motley terrible .
Great comment, and I completely agree with you. The band was imploding, and they probably thought they'd better get out as much material as possible before it happened. And the new GNR... it's shit. Thanks for watching, Brother.
Nice exercise. I also think this album could have been stronger with tighter pacing. There are b-sides that don't need to be there. Plus, it would have been nice if they did like Appetite and Lies, like Use 1 with the rock songs, Use 2 with the slows and more relaxed songs. Use 1: Right next door Perfect crime Back off bitch Double talkin jive Garden of Eden Don't dawn me Get in the ring Shotgun blues Pretty tied Up Locomotive You could be mine Use 2: Dust n' bone Don't cry (video version) You ain't the first November rain The garden Civil war 14 years Yesterday Breakdown So fine Estranged Remove: Live and let die Bad Obsession Bad apples Dead horse Coma Heaven's door Don't cry (second version) My world
I pretty much agree with your choices. I was a little disappointed when they released these two albums after Appetite and the other one (lol) I remember reading a review of their live like a suicide album in Kerrang and immediately ordering a copy. Then it seemed a short while later Appetite was released and wow say no more! I’ve got the original album cover version on vinyl
1990 to 3...Guns n Roses,Nirvana,Metallica,Red Hot Chilli Peppers..bands that were massive at the time Alice in Chains,NIN,Pearl Jam ,even Henrys Rollins Band that got huge briefly with Liar and Disconnect and the End of Silence album before..completly changed the music landscape and converted me from Hip Hop and Funk to being an absolute Metalhead /"Alternative" metal freak.❤ It was sad how quickly G n R and Nirvana peaked and fell (for obvious reasons) ya just always felt if theyd had their shit together for 2 or 3 more good years thered be at least 3 or 4 more all time great albums wed be raving about now
This is the best UYI single disc I've seen, people usually leave out Back Off Bitch and Yesterday which is insane to me!. Would you place them in the order of the video for tracklist?
This should be fascinating, although one never listened to the albums as a whole - Appetite too even. Which still makes me wonder how George Martin apparently intended for The White Album to be a singular record over the 4LP product.
You would need to do the following: Remove Dizzy Reed completely. Get Steven Adler on drums Get rid of background singers/harmonica/horns etc. I agree with these points and Steven Adler did make me feel as close to being at the Ritz in 88.
The second half of 91 was just a series of let downs. I saved up all my money for UYI and was a massively disappointed 16 yr old. They started wearing shit clothes, got a new drummer with terrible hair and a crap drum sound. They let people like Dizzy join and Izzy go. Cheesey back up singers and a stupid horn section in pinstripe suits. The biggest disappointment though was November Rain. I had a taped bootleg of the 86 demo for years (which is amazing) and couldn’t wait for the studio version, which was horrible. That said there were lots of good songs on there and I agree with nearly all of yr keepers, but Double Talkin Jive was a standout banger for me my and my pals. Surprised you didn’t like it. Back off bitch and you could be mine were originally intended for Appetite. Keep up the good work my dude!
Didn't everyone have their own 'edited highlights' version back in the day? I certainly did. Just treated the UYIs like a selection box basically. Though as my parameters were the two sides of a TDK90 the cut maybe wasn't as brutal as it should've been. 😂
@@HairMetalGuru419 CDs weren't even part of my life yet in '91, haha. And I'm sure the mix I made at age 15 would be quite different to the one I'd make today. I guess every song on the UYIs is someone's favourite (hmm, even 'My World'? P'raps not!) and someone's most hated. So maybe we can forgive GnR for the massive song dump... But did they HAVE to keep making those RIDICULOUS videos? 🤐
1:33 your complaints are all due to Axl. The band heard the finished Illusions mix and Slash In his autobiography described it sounded awesome pure raw rock. BTW he’s a blues influenced guitarist. Anyway He and the other guys played the album when it was released and Axl had added strings and synths and even the track My World - without telling them. This was the beginning of the end. The current big bloated show? Axl. I saw slash a few months the ago with his solo band. Newcastle City Hall. 2000 max capacity. 4 guys onstage. A wall of Marshall’s. He played Don’t Damn Me. Ticket cost £100. I stood right at the front in front of him. Rocking out. Waited after the show and met him by his tour bus along with the rest of the band. He’s still keeping it real.
Id keep slmodt everything from UYI 2 except ill trade get in the rimg fot Double talkin jive Knockin on heaven for november tsin sotgun blues for dead horse locomotive for the Garden My world for Garden of Eden
You must remember it took 4 and a half years to release these albums. Would you feel differently if use your illusion 1 was releases in September 1989 and 2 was retitled Civil War and released in September 1991? Considering this is the last gasp of the real band it’s better we got all the songs. Warts and all.
I hear your point, absolutely. And agreed, more songs is better. I think the other songs would've been better as extra songs on a live album and greatest hits albums. Anyway...
I thought that as a whole, Use your Illusion 1 was pretty solid, and Use your Illusion 2 was filled with songs that were boring, and had no point being released. There were a few good one's on 2, but for the most part, 1 didn't have a lot of crap on it.
2 is better than 1. Only My World is bad on 2, rest is great. Fillers on 1 : Live and let Die, You Ain't the First, Perfect Crime (Garden of Eden and Right Next Door to hell are enough in that style), Double Talkin Jive is alright, not that great
Hey, no hate from me. I think most of your list is great. I never cared for Yesterdays or Back off B****. I'm surprised you hate Locomotive. It's one of my favorite songs ever and I believe it's the most underrated on the UYI albums. I'd have to keep Locomotive, Coma, and Knockin' On Heaven's Door. Thanks for the vid.
Hey, man, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I damn near kept Coma, but, yeah, Locomotive lost me. Anyway, it's all good, and thanks for watching and for the kind words, I appreciate it, Brother.
I don't mind your list. I agree that there was too much filler. I also believe there was too much keyboard going on. The only thing I would say is that the 14 songs may fit on an album but if you check the run time, I don't think they would all fit. You have four songs that are long as Appetite had two.
There's something called Use Your Illusion Compilation "released" in 1998, I cant tell if thats real or not. It has half of the two album covers split in half. Lol, again im going against what other people like, but I could never stand it, throw November rain on the shit pile too, otherwise I like your picks.
I think I may have heard of that compilation? Whether it's real or not, I don't know. November Rain probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, haha. Hey, Brother, thanks as always for watching and commenting, I really appreciate you.
i think the '98 single album only has songs they made videos for, but i do know that garden of eden has a video, but is not on the album. both versions of don't cry are on it too.
I certainly disagree, Use Your Illusions has mostly great songs with very little filler. Blues is a part of Rock, you can't have rock without Blues. Rock is Jazz & R&B combined. Guns n Roses has 4 distinct eras, with the first being; 1) Roots/Hair Metal- From the real early days with Traci Guns all the way through Appetite for Destruction & Lies. 2) Hard Rock/Early Grunge- From Use Your Illusions to Interview with the Vampire Soundtrack single. 3) Grunge Rock/Industrial Sound-This was through the various changes in personell ultimately resulting in Starting with End of Days soundtrack to Chinese Democracy. 4) Mix of the first two eras, they've released a few good singles but age has caught up with Axels ability to sing like he used to so what we get is a mixture of different eras. The newer tracks do try to have that Hard Rock sound though. As for your list, it's not a bad list but I found both albums with mostly great music and I love it when bands are confident enough to try new sounds or improve their sound. The Greatest Hits album was a pretty good release too with many from these two albums.
Hey, man, I have no problem with disagreement. I know what you're saying about blues, but, hey, not every form of music is for everybody. Anyway, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Leaving Coma out?
That song is the best they every did. Masterpiece.
Locomotive's lyrics are brilliant. Taking out Coma and Locomotive and keeping Back Off B!tch seems bizarre.
Ok that does it, reading that he left coma out totally justifies not seeing this video.
That’s exactly what I thought too.

totally agree, how can you be a GNR fan and not pick Coma just because it's a long track. Ok....
What use your illusion is missing is Steven Adler's groove.
I agree with you 💯
He’s on “Civil War”, at least.
So true ❤❤
Matt Sorum all day. IMO
It's not Adlers drums, the songs are much different.
@@ScottFerguson-s4t not true a lot of those songs go way back prior to appetite

[in no particular order]
Dust n' Bones.
Dont Cry.
Bad 0bsession.
Double Talkin Jive.
November Rain.
The Garden.
Don't Damn Me.
Coma.
Civil War.
14 Years.
Knockin on Heaven's Door.
Shotgun Blues.
Pretty Tied up.
Locomotive.
Estranged.
You Could be Mine.
Locomotive rocks, keep that.
yeah! the first half is pretty cool, but the ending! i love the ending of locmotive.
A lot of people like that song.
I would've too.
i love Use Your Illusion apart from " My World "
Dust N bones HAS to stay.....
I had the notion to do this myself a couple of weeks ago, I whittled it down to 12 tracks, 58 minutes.
Side 1
Right Next Door to Hell
Dust N' Bones
Perfect Crime
14 Years
Bad Obsession
Locomotive
Side 2
You Could Be Mine
Bad Apples
Shotgun Blues
Yesterdays
Garden of Eden
Coma
12 tracks under 1-hour is the perfect length!
12 tracks was probably better... thanks for sharing man.
They are perfect, and they way the band wanted to be…My world is the only song that you can do without.
I can see that.. a lot of people love the whole shebang, and that's cool.
I gotta relisten to these albums....the *only* standout omission for me was Dust n Bones - love that song....another solid vid, man!
Hey, I appreciate it, Brother! Seriously.
Side 1
Right Next Door to Hell
Dust N Bones
Dont Cry
Perfect Crime
Double Talkin Jive
Dont damn Me
Coma
Side 2
Civil War
14 Years
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
Estranged
You Could be Mine
So now ive heard your list.....I don't think you can call Civil War a ballad - its about War, Genocide and Death 🙂 Sorry, but Locomotive is absolutely superb.
My track list:
1. You Could Be Mine
2. Right Next Door To Hell
3. Perfect Crime
4. Yesterdays
5. Back Off Bitch
6. November Rain
7. Breakdown
8. Shotgun Blues
9. Garden Of Eden
10. Don't Damn Me
11. Dead Horse
12. Estranged
13. Coma
I didn't put time into consideration really, but I should have. Thanks for sharing your list, man.
The Illusion albums are perfect. You don't need to fix shit.
Calm down, Cupcake. Some people agree with you, and a shit ton agree with me. Both can be correct.
I was so disappointed when I heard those albums. Doing a double album for your second major release is a huge risk that few bands can pull off. I’m all for bands evolving and experimenting, but it seems like they were trying to write beyond their abilities… or more accurately, Axels ability.
The only songs I like are Right Next Door to Hell
Don’t Cry
Pretty Tied
Up
Civil War
You Can Be Mine
November Rain.
Bad Obsession
Six songs out of what …30 is really bad.
I completely here you, man. I think they knew they were falling apart and figured they'd better release as much shit as possible before it happened. Thanks for watching, Brother.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Keep makin’ em. I’ll keep watching.
Hey, thanks, Brother, I really appreciate it... seriously.
I think Izzy’s songs are gold hers mine
Civil War
Dust N Bones
Dont’ Cry
You Ain’t The First
Bad Obsession
Double Talking Jive
November Rain
Don’t Damn Me
Dead Horse
Coma
Yesterdays
Locomotive
Estranged
You Could Be Mine
Although You Could Be Mine could easily be left off because it was on the Terminator soundtrack months earlier. So maybe take that off for Back off Bitch
I did consider leaving off You Could Be Mine for that reason, but I love that song, so decided against it. Thanks for watching, man.
I’m trading Bad obsession for double talkin jive.
I would definitely pick Dust n Bones over Right Next Door
A lot of love for Dust n Bones in here.
The garden is one of the best songs on that album... By far... Just saying😊. In the 90s they did out the best songs on one album. I had it on cassette .
I heard about that compilation album... never bought it though.
Yep top 3
Coma has to be there
A lot of people agree with you. And I do like Coma... it was a tough cut.
After Appetite was so strong start to finish, this was a bloated filler loaded exercise. I cut a ton out for myself and just had the following left which embarrassingly for them included the 2 covers
1. You could be mine
2. Pretty tied up
3. Civil War
4. Knockin on heavens door
5. Nov rain
6. Live and let die
7. Don’t cry
8. Coma
I completely see where you're coming from, man.
So every hit or single and 1 song just to make it an LP?😂
@@leemires5315 i cut singles yesterday, estranged, and aint it fun. Coma and pretty tied up weren’t singles and I only rate You Could be mine ahead of them. But hey I like meat and potatoes rock. All the fluff and artsyness is just not my thing and it’s one thing to “grow” into this over time as a band but they just started and as it turned out just stopped too as they flamed out ridiculously fast

Right next door to hell
Live and let die
Don't cry
Perfect crime
Back off bitch
November rain
Garden of eden
Dead horse
Coma
Civil war
Get in the ring
Locomotive
Estranged
You could be mine
I don't like the album version of Knockin on heavens door, but live it was great.
Yeah, the live version is phenomenal. Thanks for sharing, man.
November Rain is a little bloated for me.
I wouldn't say bloated. But I would say over played. Especially when there's better.
And a decent rip off of Layla
I completely get that point of view.
I did this 25 years ago. Looking forward to see if it matches.
I put Get On The Ring on the shit pile with My World. Otherwise, I can go with that.
Yeah, it was a longer process than I thought it would be, haha. Kept listening and relistening, and taking songs off, then adding something back on. In another week the list could change, but I think I got it the way I want it. Appreciate you watching, man.
Thanks, for the proper breakdown on these albums! I couldn’t agree more with your assessment on this matter. Thanks for kicking this in the ass!
Thanks, man, I really appreciate it... seriously.
Can you use AI to remove Dizzy's keyboards, and increase the volume of Izzy! I would love an AOD mix of UYI!
I'm right with you, man, seriously.
I would LOVED for you to have taken those 14 songs and create a NEW running order. With all those other tracks having been bounced, the energy, and flow of the music is completely different. Maybe a follow up video!!! 👍
I should have done that in this one--great point. We'll see about future video... thanks for watching, man.
Solid list Guru!! I'm finding myself really looking forward to your video releases. Keep them coming brother 🤟
Hey, Scott, really appreciate this comment, man, seriously. Appreciate you supporting what I do.
In my opinion your list is perfect like the exact songs I would’ve picked and kept the only song I would’ve kept is perfect crime. I love your channel and keep on rocking.

@@HairMetalGuru419 Of course man no problem. And btw that Apple Music list was complete shit.
@@suddenspams4500 Oh, shit, man, that thing about gave me an aneurysm.
Hey, thanks for the great comment and sharing you thoughts. And for watching, man, I appreciate it.
I’m going to just keep it as a double album and in no order but I did choose a song for both album openers
UYI 1

3. Don’t cry
4. You ain’t the first
5. Double talkin’ jive (album opener)

3. Yesterday
4. Knockin’ on heaven’s door
5. Get in the ring
6. Breakdown
7. Pretty tied up
8. So fine
9. Estranged
10. You could be mine (album opener)
I love the song civil war but it just seamed strange as an opening song.
Hey, thanks for watching and commenting man.
I whittled mine down to one double album as opposed to the two double albums we got. I went into it with vinyl in mind, so there are a couple tracks that I left on more to balance the run times as best as I could.

CD/LP 2
10. Pretty Tied Up
11. Civil War
12. 14 Years
13. Breakdown
23:14
14. Garden Of Eden
15. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
16. Yesterdays
17. Coma

I was 16, 17 when they came out a lot of good memories. But looking back i see your point now.
Man, what a great time in music, I'm right with you, Brother. But, yeah, I don't think the Illusions have aged that well as a double album.
All you did was fuck it up. Coma, come on
I said I like Coma, man, haha. It's just a video, don't take it too seriously!
I haven't seen the uncensored cover in decades.
Don't see it very often at all.
Fully agree with everything except Shotgun Blues should stay and Breakdown Cut it out.
Hey, thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
The order of tracks would be:
1. Yesterdays (IMHO a killer opening track. Especially following the beast that Appetite was. Lyrically, I think this song sets the tone with how bad Axl wanted to destroy Appetite)
2. Bad Obsession (I’m a guitar player and I’m a sucker for Honky Tonk Blues influenced rock)
3. You could be mine
4. Don’t Cry (Original)
5. Live And Let Die (It’s a cover but for me, this cover outshines many GNR originals)
6. Perfect Crime
7. Double Talkin Jive
8. Back Off Bitch
9. Dust N Bones
10. You Ain’t The First
11. So Fine (Love this track and its quirkiness)
12. The Garden
13. Estranged
14. November Rain
15. Coma
The only 2 songs that are super hard for me to cut out are: 14 years and Pretty tied up.
Besides, they're so overplayed at this point I don't need to hear them again as long as I live.) So, my Gn'R Used Illusions album runs like this:
01) Don't Cry (original)
02) Back Off B!tch
03) Double Talkin' Jive
04) November Rain
05) The Garden
06) Don't Damn Me
07) Civil War
08) Yesterdays
09) Breakdown
10) Pretty Tied Up
11) Locomotive (complicity)
12) Estranged
Great list, man, and I'm right with you on Estranged. Appreciate you sharing this.
I'd probably be even more ruthless and turn it into a 10 track album and I'd keep the covers. It would then be one of the greatest albums of all time.

Solid, Brother, thanks for sharing this. It would've gone Diamond I'm sure.
I agree! But I think I would have kept one of the Izzy songs.
I love Izzy. Him leaving the band was a huge part of what fucked them up.

12 normal length tracks on disc 1
8 mostly long tracks on disc 2
I hear you here, man. That's a good idea as well.
Hey, thanks for the comment and sharing all these thoughts. I really do appreciate you watching and giving your opinion.

Thanks, Brother, I appreciate it.
I probably would have picked 10 to 12 songs. I agree with you about cover songs. They just don't do covers very well.
12 songs may have been better. Thanks for watching.
I agree with your list . Then maybe after a couple of years they release an EP with maybe 5 other uyi songs.
Use 1:
Right next door
Perfect crime
Back off bitch
Double talkin jive
Garden of Eden
Don't dawn me
Get in the ring
Shotgun blues
Pretty tied Up
Locomotive
You could be mine
Use 2:
Dust n' bone
Don't cry (video version)
You ain't the first
November rain
The garden
Civil war
14 years
Yesterday
Breakdown
So fine
Estranged
Remove:
Live and let die
Bad Obsession
Bad apples
Dead horse
Coma
Heaven's door
Don't cry (second version)
My world
If I never hear sweet child of mine again I’m good. Yes the use your illusion albums were bloated.
I hear you man.
Now you have to arrange them in the ideal order from the kick ass opener to the bog finale with a good flow in between😊
I should have done that in the video... fuck, my bad.
I pretty much agree with your choices. I was a little disappointed when they released these two albums after Appetite and the other one (lol)
I remember reading a review of their live like a suicide album in Kerrang and immediately ordering a copy. Then it seemed a short while later Appetite was released and wow say no more! I’ve got the original album cover version on vinyl
Hey, thanks for watching and commenting, man. Shit, you have the original vinyl? Bad ass!
1990 to 3...Guns n Roses,Nirvana,Metallica,Red Hot Chilli Peppers..bands that were massive at the time Alice in Chains,NIN,Pearl Jam ,even Henrys Rollins Band that got huge briefly with Liar and Disconnect and the End of Silence album before..completly changed the music landscape and converted me from Hip Hop and Funk to being an absolute Metalhead /"Alternative" metal freak.❤ It was sad how quickly G n R and Nirvana peaked and fell (for obvious reasons) ya just always felt if theyd had their shit together for 2 or 3 more good years thered be at least 3 or 4 more all time great albums wed be raving about now
I had an idea to a video very similar to this but a little different. I really enjoyed this.
Appreciate it, Brother.
This is the best UYI single disc I've seen, people usually leave out Back Off Bitch and Yesterday which is insane to me!. Would you place them in the order of the video for tracklist?
Did you know, there is a Use your illusion 3?
It's raw, it's uncut, and, full of toxic masculinity...
And it's freaking awesome!
Well sign my ass up for it, then.
Interesting video. Agree with some of your choices and reasons but it’s a difficult one for me. Love most of it for various reasons
Keep the Izzy penned songs. Cut the stupid Axl shit he added to II. Get rid of the covers.
I love Izzy--major bummer for the band when he left.
Yep, I graduated High School in 91 and stopped listening to mainstream music....it was crap to me....oh it still is.
This should be fascinating, although one never listened to the albums as a whole - Appetite too even. Which still makes me wonder how George Martin apparently intended for The White Album to be a singular record over the 4LP product.
The albums weren't broken
I'm glad you think so. And I have no problem with that at all.
You would need to do the following:
Remove Dizzy Reed completely.
Get Steven Adler on drums
Get rid of background singers/harmonica/horns etc.
I agree with these points and Steven Adler did make me feel as close to being at the Ritz in 88.
A couple of songs, like November Rain, is great. They're like In the Still of the Night by WhiteSnake. But too much is over kill.
Agreed, man. Thanks for watching.
I know their debut outsold the Boston debut witch is a massive achievement on its own
Right?! That's crazy shit.
Hey, thanks for the great comment, man, I appreciate it. Yep, I agree that after Appetite, GNR was a major disappointment.
Didn't everyone have their own 'edited highlights' version back in the day? I certainly did. Just treated the UYIs like a selection box basically. Though as my parameters were the two sides of a TDK90 the cut maybe wasn't as brutal as it should've been. 😂
Haha, yeah, who didn't make a mixed tape/cd of their favorites on this... I know I did.
Take a shot every time this guy swears.😊
That would probably be very bad for your health...
I have a GNR illusion playlist that combines both albums and cuts out the bloat. There are great songs on those records but it’s bloated with shite!
I think a lot of people made their own playlist. I know I did back in the day as well.
November Rain....please God NO ! Tbf the video and Beavis and Butthead are responsible for me barfing when i hear this song
Id keep slmodt everything from UYI 2 except ill trade get in the rimg fot Double talkin jive Knockin on heaven for november tsin sotgun blues for dead horse locomotive for the Garden My world for Garden of Eden
Thanks for the comment.
Garden of Eden stays, get rid of the other uptempo one from earlier of UYI 1.
Love the Appetite for Destruction tent your wearing 😂😂😂
@@modge1976 Damn, are you calling me fat?
Very good choice but i would keep Coma. 15 for me
A lot of people agree with you, and I do like Coma. Thanks for watching, man.
I have been saying this since the early nineties
Me, too.
Anyway...
That would have been a great album. Trimmed all the fat off of it.
Fillers on 1 : Live and let Die, You Ain't the First, Perfect Crime (Garden of Eden and Right Next Door to hell are enough in that style), Double Talkin Jive is alright, not that great
I can see that. That's the other argument outside of what songs should have been on it, was which one was better.
Yeah, I didn't spend too much time considering the length of the song. Thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
@@NYUK-x-4 its real
They released a remastered Super Deluxe version of the two albums packaged together as one set in 2022.
i think the '98 single album only has songs they made videos for, but i do know that garden of eden has a video, but is not on the album. both versions of don't cry are on it too.
I certainly disagree, Use Your Illusions has mostly great songs with very little filler.
Blues is a part of Rock, you can't have rock without Blues. Rock is Jazz & R&B combined.
Guns n Roses has 4 distinct eras, with the first being;
1) Roots/Hair Metal- From the real early days with Traci Guns all the way through Appetite for Destruction & Lies.
