- With classic attractions such as Horizons and The Great Movie Ride getting replaced... could Space Mountain be next? While it may seem impossible since Space Mountain is an iconic attraction for Magic Kingdom, but if you look at Disney's recent history of aging rides, it might not be out of the realm of possibility.

As a cast member at magic kingdom, even though I am a steward, I think it is safe to assume that space mountain is indeed here to stay, even with tron coming, when tron opens, the lines are gonna be crazy, so space mountain can alleviate the frustrations of waiting in line, also, space mountain is still extremely popular at the magic kingdom, I see wait times for it go a little over two hours on some days, and honestly, I am sure that disney knows how much space mountain means to everyone, even though space mountain is not as intense as some other coasters, the ride does still hold up and is still fun. But as you said, since it opened in 1975, it definitely needs a bit of an update, thankfully, disney still does a lot with space mountain such as making the ride completely pitch black for villains after hours and mickeys not so scary halloween party, and also a makeover for very merry christmas party. walt disney world is considered a destination, unlike disneyland resort, and since florida is the third most populous us state and space mountain still has major fans. Honestly, even when tron opens, I can still see lines being long for space mountain, they are 2 different coasters after all.
Replaced? Nah. Refurbished? Yeah. Here’s the thing, SPACE MOUNTAIN is seen as part of the Disney World experience. I can see them doing a full refurb once Tron takes away some if not most of it’s traffic. Also, if you were to retrack it, who would do it? It was built by Arrow who no longer exists, and now vekoma makes almost all of the new Disney coasters. Not to mention Dynamic Attractions stepping in for both big thunder and space mountain in the west coast. Maelstrom, horizons and the great movie ride ride were only really loved by a specific group and were never really seen by outsiders as part of the essential experience.
Vekoma has done refurbishing/retracking work on Arrow coasters before, haven't they? It's not a standard Arrow design, but they've got the experience.
If Vekoma can’t do it than maybe Morgan can do it, they’ve refurbed old Arrow coasters before
I would doubt it. Disney would face a lot of backlash from angry fans if they rethemed the original Space Mountain to a currently popular IP. All it needs is a track and special effects refurb similar to what was done to DL's version. That is all.
I could see Disney renovating Space Mountain once the Tron coaster is open.
I could see Disney closing SM for refurbishment a few months after Tron’s opening so it doesn’t affect capacity too much.

If Space Mountain is replaced one day, I think it’ll be more of a “Maelstrom” situation where they add characters to the original ride. I don’t see them getting rid of the entire attraction

Horizons had big problems when it was removed, Maelstrom had very little waits times until its closure was announced, and great movie ride was dated and needed a lot of work so it was more cost efficient to replace with a higher capacity attraction. Space mountain has a crazy high capacity way more than tron, so a retracking and modernizing would make sense from a capacity standpoint.
It is beloved, popular and a massive structure they’d have to get rid of meaning they’d have to close part of Tomorrowland where their new ride tron is so no I don’t see space mountain going anywhere but a refurbishment is inevitable at some point

Nah they are not going to get rid of space mountain lol, if anything I heard rumors that they’er going to add updates to the ride, things they weren’t able to add for the 2009 refurbishment, so I wouldn’t worry about space mountain going, if anything they will try to make it better, yeah it’s competition but both very different rides
I would much rather see a revamp like they did to Disneyland's version. World's version is very rough.

no way in hell would they ever do it, it is one of the most iconic attractions ever made, and it has lasted this long, i can only see retracking.
Considering how much of an icon Space Mountain is (way more than Horizons and The Great Movie Ride ever were if we're being completely honest with ourselves), the chances of it being replaced are extremely slim to none. If anything at all is gonna happen to Space Mountain in response to Tron, it's way more likely to be a massive refurb on par with what Disneyland's version received from 2003-2005 than anything else.
I think if anything TRON will help alleviate a lot of the wait times going into Space Mountain. I’ve seen wait times for space mountain get as high as 330 minutes but on average it’s a 75-90 minute wait. It’s still a very popular ride and I still see it being a very popular ride even when TRON is up and running. The one thing the other attractions you mentioned had in common were that they were only popular amongst die-hard Disney nostalgics and not the public at large.
Disney had to pay to use the IP in the Great Movie Ride - which is one of the reasons Disney chose to replace it. For that reason alone, I don't think it should be included in this conversation. But you could include Disneyland's People Mover, the original Imagination ride, and probably a few others in its place, so your premise is still completely valid. Will they replace Space Mountain? I hope they don't, I'd bet they won't, but only time will tell.
Great point, but with Disney acquiring twenty-first century fox, they have access to some classics that wouldn’t need licensing fees. Disney has to know the acquisition of Fox (since it was a huge transaction) well before they decided to rip out the Great Movie Ride.

I mean if they just retracted it to make the ride more smoother and have on ride music I would be on board, but get rid of it OH HECKS NAHHH!
I'd say the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster at Epcot is a bigger potential threat to Space Mountain than Tron is. We can guess that Guardians is going to be another ride offering thematically the same type of experience as Space Mountain: a roller coaster that simulates a fantastic space voyage. And presumably it's going to be a much more modern experience.
Then again, Walt Disney World already has multiple other "simulated space trip" experiences: there's Mission: Space at Epcot and Star Tours at DHS. Star Tours' queue is even themed pretty similarly to Space Mountain's, since in both cases you're preparing for what seems to be commercial transit at a fantasy spaceport.
I actually think the original Space Mtn will stay almost entirely the way it is.
I do think they will close it for a lengthy track refurb and maybe updates effects.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10-15 years it gets landmark status.

Now everyone is waiting for the Tron cycle coaster to come to the Magic Kingdom as it's being built, but Space Mountain will always be a classic and it's still popular to everyone. So if you can understand, Space Mountain is never going to be replaced buy the Tron cycle coaster or anything else, Disney knows that Space Mountain in every other tomorrow lands of their theme parks will always be popular to the public. And they know that they can't replace them with something new.
But they do know in order to change and to keep a classic Thrill Ride for the fans, they'll make sure that they'll keep every single Space Mountain ride updated and refreshed with new things and Technology. Including the possibility of replacing an old track, but what will keep every single Space Mountain attraction going is that they'll reprogram them two or three times, with special projections and other reprogramming special effects. To make those reprogramming changes as seasonal overlays, so until this year's Halloween Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom will finally get a Halloween themed reprogramming seasonal overlay.
And don't forget in frontierland they have 2 Big Thrill Ride attractions as well, although one is a roller coaster and the other is a Flume ride. And of course they are Big Thunder Mountain which was the first one, and Splash Mountain and both of those attractions have the same style and theme of a mountain structure. So since frontierland got to Mountain thrill rides, some people were jealous in Tomorrowland that Space Mountain was the only one in the area itself. But now they don't have to feel jealous anymore, with the arrival of the Tron cycle coaster.
And believe me people in frontierland and Tomorrowland are going to have a big competition, between those four big thrill rides. But of course no matter what the visitors will just say that they're good, and the Silver Lining to all of it will be that they'll say this one is my favorite.
So just to be crystal clear, Space Mountain isn't going anywhere. It will only be if Disney says something, but in this case they'll never say Space Mountain is going away at the Magic Kingdom. And I know them because they realize a big fanfare the attraction has
If Disney wasn’t so IP crazy as of late I would agree with you, but unfortunately they are. We have been aware of plans, albeit they were never implemented, but they were still drawn up. One of them was replacing and demolishing Space Mountain in Tokyo Disneyland.
Look at Tower of Terror at DCA. It was a popular (and fairly new ride, compare to Florida’s Space Mountain) and it was replaced (rethemed) to Guardians of the Galaxy. Magic Kingdom’s Space Mountain needs a lot of tlc, it has been neglected for far too long.
If they do this the riot will be larger than all the other riots from ride closure combined, including me!

Just came across this vid. Not worried about Space Mountain. I agree with others that it’ll receive a heavy referb after Tron opens. They redid the exit ramp recently, if they were going to get rid of the ride they wouldn’t have bothered. Plus with Josh being the new CEO of parks experiences I’d say Space Mountain has a bright future.

Horizons was demolished because of a sinkhole. As for the Great Movie Ride, Hollywood Studios was changing at a fundamental level - moving away from the working studio and behind the scenes themes to being in the settings of different movies - so the park's central ride had to reflect that. And there was essentially no way to give it an update that would be truly beneficial, each scene was built to represent a different genre. And Maelstrom wasn't a classic, it was a ride that hardly ever saw long wait times and the decision to replace it with something better makes sense. About the actual video...Tron simply being there won’t affect Space Mountain's theming. It's not the same as Tron, if you boil any two things down to thejr most simple descriptions, they'll sound the same. It's a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean are both boat rides with animatronics - not the same thing. Also, the decision to replace DCA's inferior and hastily put together replica of ToT was a good one that has yielded positive results. All of the attractions you mentioned were replaced for good reason. Horizons was over a sinkhole and was collapsing in on itself, The Great Movie Ride no longer fit the park's theme, and Maelstrom was a confusing and low populated ride that could house something better that could draw people to the area again. There is simply no reason to replace Space Mountain. It continually has long wait times even to this day, it fits the theming of its land, and there's nothing wrong with the structure. If Disney really did want to replace Space Mountain, they would have built Tron in its place. But for Tomorrowland they are clearly dedicated to preserving classic attractions as the Speedway somehow exists to this day. If that ride has stuck around (although the track was slightly shortened), Space Mountain will too. Yes, it's sad to see classics go. But the decisions Disney is making today are ones that, for the most part, are improving upon what was already there. Walt always said the parks will never be finished and will constantly change, and that’s just what's happening.
You make some solid points here, but the sinkhole explanation was a lie from Disney, being in construction, Disney would have to do a major soil re-correction to make that land suitable again to build on, which costs millions of dollars for that size. Disney did not do this. Disney erected Mission Space in Horizons space, the sinkhole explanation was a load of crap.
Disney actually never said anything about the sinkhole. During construction, they filled the hole with metal girders which is why most people believe that theory. Disney’s explanation was that Mission Space was bigger than Horizons, which isn’t true because you can simply compare photos of the two for proof.

Any of those worried people out there thinking "it can get replaced". No, no it can't and they will not. Why would they when Space Mountain was their first ever steel coaster at Walt Disney World. And plus it would take lots and lots of work to demolish.
Last time I rode Space Mountain back in March, I hated it. The line was very narrow and hot. The ride itself is very jerky. When Tron opens, I hope for a full refurbishment. Not only should the track be replaced, but I would love to see the addition of a single only line, as I did see some ride vehicles having a seat empty. Also bring back the glow in the dark paint job.
There's rumors circulating that autopia at Disneyland will be replaced by a tron roller coaster. Rumor also has it that its a small world at the magic kingdom will be getting "re-immanged" soon.
We did hear the Disneyland rumor about Tron coming... but that was before the pandemic. As far as we know- all future plans of expansion are indefinitely on hold, especially considering Disneyland still can’t open...
They won’t replace it, they would heavily refurbish it, plus they just added the new exit to it.

If they had to replace it, I would retheme it to wall-e, and recolor the dome to a brown color. I would rather want it to stay though.
The thing is with horizons is that it's structure was unstable, hence why they tore it down, great movie ride promoting IPs that Disney didn't own, and maelstorm wasn't relevant enough I guess, but everyone knows space mountain and it's iconic in its own right even without an IP, but they did make the god awful decision of getting rid of tower of terror so I didn't know anymore

Personally I hate Space Mountain at 6'8 I can't ride the thing without a large amount of pain because someone of my size can't fit in the thing. Still I wouldn't want to see it go, a massive update maybe a totally different track layout making it a more kid friendly ride but keeping it space mountain.
A redesigned ride vehicle and smoother track would definitely help!

Here is what I would like to see happen. When TRON opens in 2021, it will be a smashing success for quite a while. Sometime shortly after TRON opens, close Space Mountain for a good 2-3 years (DL’s version was closed from April 2003-July 2005) to give it the same type of overhaul that DL’s version received years ago. I’m talking a completely brand new track that is silky smooth; new ride vehicles that are more comfortable and feature an onboard SOBAT system (get Michael Giacchino to compose); a much darker ride where you cannot see ANY of the tracks or supports (so no open lift hill area like the current version); and overall better effects. I visited DL for the first time in March, and the difference between their SM and MK’s SM is night-and-day. I know that closing the ride for 2-3 years, if not more, would be rather long, but trust me. It would be so worth the wait!
No doubt Space Mountain needs a complete rebuild, but can the park afford to lose a major E-Ticket/people eater for 2 to 3 years
AMagicProduction I would say no, but it looks like Spaceship Earth is getting a major 2+ year overhaul soon. SE may not be as popular and iconic as SM, but after hearing this, never say never!

Don't think a roller coaster, like Space Mountain, will match up well with an IP like Wall-E. Not every Disney attraction needs to have an IP.

I would love if they updated Florida's SM to be more similar to Disneyland's. All it needs is an on-ride audio track and a retracking and then it might be better than Disneyland's in my opinion.
Would be interesting if they decided to retrack the attraction if they would convert the vehicles to side-by-side rockets like Disneyland (for better capacity) but make just one new, much longer track, rather than two identical tracks

Mr PJ Also, make it SUPER dark inside. One of the best parts about DL’s version is that you cannot see any of the track or supports, which is what Space Mountain is supposed to be.

They should refurbish it and turn it into tron or something else. If they did this to tower of terror, than they should be able to update this ride as well. Also I think it’s super outdated, which hopefully other people agree.
