I have an 05 Dodge Ram Cummins 5.9 and always used conventional oil. I think you sold me on synthetic. My question: Do I need to flush the old conventional oil or can I just drain and add the synthetic? Are there any other things that I would need do before I make the switch. Thanks. Enjoyed the video.

      Robert,
Happy you liked the video and good question. You can just drain your conventional oil and fill with synthetic and roll. As mentioned, be sure to prime your oil filter with oil before installing. Your 1st synthetic oil change I would recommend changing 3 or 4 thousand miles because synthetic generally loosens and cleans a lot of old oil tarnish and build up in your engine on the 1st synthetic oil change. You can always check it at the 3 or 4K mark and if it looks clean then you could run it more. The good ol visual and smell inspection is good to do but if the oil is darker in color and not as obvious that it’s still in good condition then folks do also send oil samples out to have their oil checked for impurities and contamination. oil sampling also helps owners find out what oil change interval is best for the conditions they operate their truck in based on how much life is left in the oil when they look at their oil sample results. After your 1st syn oil change you should be able to run 10K no prob even if you are towing. If towing a ton of weight near the tow capacity of the truck then you may need to do oil sampling to see if you can extend, keep, or reduce your interval. And always be sure to frequently perform pretrips and check your fluids. Depending on the condition of your engine, if you have any oil consumption, you will have to top off your oil from time to time with extended oil change intervals. And if you want the extended engine protection and just want to change at 3 or 4K miles then you can do that too with synthetic. Any other questions, let me know!

Thanks for shearing your experience. I just ordered Mobile Delvac 1 5w-40 for my ‘03 Ram 5.9. Would you recommend Any ZDDP additive in addition? If so, Any specific Brand?

I haven’t used any additives. The synthetic oil has everything your engine needs and then some. I think if anything, do an early oil change and 4 or 5K to help get all of your old conventional oil out of the engine. Put the 3 gallons of synthetic in and run it!

Thanks for this, was standing in the auto parts store wondering if I should start using synthetic on my ‘05 5.9, it has 435k on it, I guess it’s about time 😆
