    Deore has always been great stuff. I still have my first mountain bike, an 89 Diamond back Apex, which came with Deore. That bike still shifts like the day I got it: perfectly. Back then I never even considered upgrading to XT because the Deore worked so well. I got a new bike in November and it came with SLX. If anything breaks I will put Deore on it.

      @@ismaeltrindade8423 as a mechanic I imagine they see quite a few of those derailleurs... If they would look closely they would notice that they're all "bent" the exact same way. I'd find that very unlikely to happen by accident. Especially once you get deore, SLX and xt parts all with the same issue.
      But the video references here is definitely the clearer proof and a very good explanation why the bend is good.

    It's also interesting, that previously marketed as lighter 1x system, weights look to be getting out of hand maybe? Shimano is making Deore cage of mix aluminum/steel, ooorrr maybe they moved production to Japan for precision, but chosen to leave the SLX cage unchanged for use in Deore, to save space for production line or the need of retooling for batches of cages for Deore/SLX.
    Gotta say biggest downsides of cheap wide range cassettes is the weight, and adding a hefty derailleur on top of it to rear wheel of full suspension bike is not welcomed. Really interesting what the correct reason was, aluminum is stiffer so it might be also for that precision. After my recent first serious cage twist on deore 10sp recently, gotta admit steel cage is lovely. Being able to just bend it back with no affert or visible damage and keep on riding was SWEET. Maybe they try to lure customers with just few grams less, since the competition from Box and Microshift is growing? Maybe all of those reasons play a little role? We need Inspetor Gadget to investigate.....I meant Inspector Groupset ;-p

      I can recommend SRAM GX although Deore and SLX are both cheaper and probably at least as good. (I actually prefer Shimano but currently ride Sram GX)
      SX has too many plastic parts for my liking. Metal adjustment screws in plastic really aren't a great idea, especially not on something like a rear derailleur. Otherwise SX does bring 12s to a very low price point but if it breaks, upgrading to something like NX, GX, Deore or SLX seems like a very good choice.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 3 роки тому +2

      SRAM SX/NX/GX is crap compared to Shimano’s offerings even the cheapest Devore. They are made of cheese or something because even grass could bend the cage of my GX Eagle rear mech. After replacing two GX I switched to Shimano and never looked back.

    • @penskib1975
      @penskib1975 3 роки тому

      @@LoveMTB even the setting up is easier, sram needs a special tool, so you can't even check if it's set correctly from factory without it or faffing around, and the shimano has a line stamped on so you can see straight away if it's not correct from the factory.

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost 3 роки тому

      @@penskib1975 setup is easier on Shimano, maintenance is easier on SRAM.
      On Sram derailleurs the clutch doesn't need maintenance and the cage lock makes taking out the wheel a lot more comfortable.
      You also cannot forget to turn the clutch back on after maintenance.
      Also I think it's sufficient to eyeball the b-gap or measure it with a hex key. The tool isn't essential to get good shifting.

    this and XTR are the only 12spd rear derailleurs I can get in Norway now. So I probably will try these.
    I've Ran Box One X-Wide, but it was flawed, I will continue to do testing, but I had to install Wolftooth Road Link cus I maxed the B bolt and guide pulley was too far back, resulting in bad shifting performance with 11.50T so problem is solved now, but the bushings wear in few tens of km, so that's disappointing, but if I had to replace them once n a year or so that would be fine, but if riding a lot that can be a month worth, but I've been feeling bad a lot so not ridden as much, but I plan on trying SHimano again, but Sram Rear derailleurs are out of stock in Norway.
    it will be a while before the Garbaruk 11.-50T I ordered is ready.
    So probably fastest solution to get 12 speed Deore RD.

    Fantastic video. Simple, exactly what I needed to know with no other bs thrown in as topping. Perfect. It appears that going for Deore RD in your drivetrain is the most sensible choice and the SLX is caught in an awkward position without any value addition for the extra cost.
    Have you tested these 12s derailleurs with the HG compatible 12s cassettes that Sunrace and others make? The Shimano spec says min and max teeth count for smallest cog is 10t - so will it not work with 11-46/50 cassettes? Hi I asked you a similar question a few weeks ago but referring to electronic gears.
    I have Sram NX and just don't like the way the shifters work. So I know I can fit a shimano 12 speed RD but if I fit a shimano shifter will this sit with the brake lever ok or do I need to fit a shimano lever? I will keep the NX cassette until it is worn out which should last some time.

Most the time never even use the top two large gears. I guess it just depends where you ride but unless 1 super steep 2 large front ring. They hardly ever get used.

      With this new 12s deore, most SLX parts are indeed kind of pointless as deore offers basically the exact same features and performance at a slightly lower price and marginally more weight.
      However there are a few feature differences I know of:
      1. The brake calipers of SLX use screws to hold the pads in place. Deore uses those annoying pins you have to bend around each time.
      2. The SLX brake levers have a tool-free reach adjustment. On Deore you need a hex key... I think it's about 4±1mm.
      I actually prefer the deore version here because I don't accidentally adjust it. I can set it and forget it. It also looks better imo.
      3. SLX comes as a 2x12 version, deore is 1x12 only. For me 1x12 is enough with the "new" 10T cogs but there are people who still prefer 2x because they need the extra range.
      4. The SLX cassette has one black (alloy) gear, the Deore is all silver (steel). By counting the black gears you can easily tell apart the 12s cassettes. Just a nice extra although almost pointless.
      However all of these are tiny differences. So in this 12s generation, there's no major difference.
      I believe SRAMs high end groupsets XX1 and X01 have similarly little difference although from what I understand they are intended for different use cases and therefor the weights are a bit more different.

      Slx crank is the best value to weight I found, still supports replaceable bearings for BB. Overall Slx will always have more stainless steel bolts used. Which is extremely valuable for long term use and saves a lot of hassle trying to find matching bolts in hardware stores and cut them to size. Cycling bolt heads are often narrower so they require grinding too, if purchased in hardware stores. Also Slx is the lowest group made in Japan which promises better tolerances and materials used. You might think you're getting alloy for one side of cage here in both, but what type of alloy is it, we don't know.
