Bass Drum Swivel Technique

  • Here's a quick example of the swivel technique that I use for some of the faster stuff that I do. I have a lot of people ask me about it so I thought I'd post a quick video on a bass drum practice pad (it's actually a Roland KD-8 rubber drum trigger pad, unplugged). I'm using an older Tama Iron Cobra double pedal with a Trick driveshaft. Spring tension maxed out, beaters about 45 degrees. I normally use two separate kicks with Axis Longboards and highly recommend them, but wanted to show this technic works on any pedal, even if you are used to something else... This isn't a top speed run or trying to achieve perfection here...just an example of how to do it on whatever you have available. :)

    I could do 180bpm with hel-toe, but with this technique, I did 220-250 smoothly...However, my knees were hurting a lot & they were getting worst. So, I learnt from the begenning and started playing ankle motion. I have reached 250, but still working on smoothness and shifting from 8 to 16 or 12 to 16 notes...

    Once I saw a drummer on stage playing this kind of superspeed bas drum. I thought he got some help from a drum machine or whatever hi-tech thing, until I found this video. I actually am not a drummer, but I like playing a drums set so much when I sometimes get bored with melodious kind of thing in playing guitar, woodwinds, or keyboard. I'd really like to try this technique.. thanks mate 👍

    Just be careful with how much you do it because it's bad for your knees. Sounds great though.

    • @albertborn

      Thank you! A lot of the knee issues can be avoided if you pay attention to the amount of friction on the pedals and side to side motion. You don’t want to be grinding your feet into the pedals. You can hit hard with this technique but also be fluid and light with the actual swivel motion. The power is in the actual moment of the downstroke. You also don’t want to go crazy with side to side motion. Too much of either of these will start to actually slow you down and could give you knee pain. Soreness (as in a good solid workout) is good. If you feel pain, stop and figure out where in the motion is causing the pain and then modify. The worst setup for your pedals to do this would be skateboard friction tape on your pedals. Some guys like this so there feet stay planted on the pedal. A terrible idea though if you want to do any swivel or slide techniques! You’ll certainly feel it in your knees if you do this!

      How is it “bad for your knees?” As a strength coach and drummer, there is no way internal and external rotation while plantar and dorsi flexing at a high rate is going to hurt the knees. As with anything, too much too soon, can cause problems. These are submaximal loads, short range of motion, high speed efforts.

    Just for my understanding and out of interest... (not a drummer, but bass player) ... if the pedal moves up and down, how does moving sideways help? Being able to play fast must be all about economy of motion, right?
    Is it about activating different muscles to increase endurance more than speed?
    Thanks

    • @kreator4life
      @kreator4life 3 роки тому +8

      Once you reach a certain speed, the pedals essentially bounce off of your feet without you having to put much effort into making the beater strike, and the swiveling motion is basically to keep momentum

      Yeah fast kicks r awesome but I thought swivel kicks damage your ankles & knees it seems an unnatural movement !???!

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  3 роки тому +7

      There is still a downward stroke with each left motion and each right motion of the swivel. The downward strokes on each side of the swivel are getting a bit of an angular strike which is using a slightly different muscle group and allows for longer muscle recovery on each side of the stroke, thus allowing for longer and faster double bass runs. Kind of hard to explain until you do it a little bit and start to master the technique. Not the easiest technique to master, but can be a lot of fun.

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  3 роки тому +9

      Adrian Jabs Yes you can tear up your ankles and knees if you aren’t careful. Sticky pedals or shoes will create too much friction for swivelling and you’ll feel that in your knees. Go too wild with back and forth and you’ll feel that too. You need to learn how to control it so you avoid damage. If your muscles are sore, that’s ok and means you’re getting a good workout. If you feel pain you should stop and figure out what part of the motion is causing pain, then modify or correct.

    Nice technique. I'm not a double-kick player, but I use my DW5000 double-kick pedals to play bass fills, flams, and short double-kick runs (at the speed of Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades") no more than 2 measures (4 measures is my limit, tho, I can't sustain coordination in my feet for long).
    What model of double-kick pedals are those you have there? They seem very responsive to the speed of your feet. I noticed the Trick linkage bar there, that bar is excellent... no lag, very consistent between the slave and master pedals. I fitted my DW5000 Accelerator double-kick pedals with a Ludwig Atlas Pro link drive bar, and I replaced the stock single-chain cams for a pair of Pearl Demon direct-drive cams... my modified pedals feel totally consistent with the Frankensteined hardware upgrade.
    I'll try to practice the swivel technique so that I can develop my coordination and speed to tighten up my double-kick fills and runs.
    Thanks for sharing this with us!

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  2 роки тому +1

      These are older model iron cobra pedals, hp900 series. They’re probably a good 10 years old, I got them used and bought the Trick driveshaft since the original one was shot. It’s a nice driveshaft with no lag and smoother feeling than most stock driveshafts for common pedals. I also have some DW5000 pedals. I played those for years and can swivel on those just as well. My favorite for higher speed stuff though are my axis longboards. This video I originally did for a few friends to show them what I was doing, and that it’s possible to do on just about any pedal as long as you have the technique down solid. Now the video has taken off like crazy! Maybe now I’ll do another one. 😁

    You look like you play both acoustic and electronic drums. For training, how close does that Roland kick pad feel to the acoustic bass drum? Is the rebound too much, too little, or pretty much the same.

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  3 роки тому +1

      I mostly play acoustic, but there are times where I have to practice on an electronic kit or practice pad. The combo I used here, the older Roland rubber kick tower (it does flex and softer in the middle, which helps) and using felt beaters, worked pretty good and felt ok to me coming from an acoustic kit. It’s just what I had available at the time when I did the video. It’s funny how I did this video on a whim and all the questions I get! I’m totally happy to answer though. 😁Sometimes mesh kick pads feel a little bouncy for my taste and at the time I was preferring this set up for quieter practicing. On my acoustic kit I normally use 2 separate bass drums and Axis longboards, just one pillow in each bass drum and medium punchy sounding bass drum head tension.

    • @SunnyHF-nf4bc
      @SunnyHF-nf4bc 3 роки тому

      @@albertborn I appreciate the response. At home, I have a TD-30 flagship kit (so I don’t get noise complaints). I do have a KD-8 like you do in the video. It has been 3 months since I’ve played on an acoustic and I’m scared that I’ve become de-trained.
      I do most of my grinding on the practice pad with a Steve Smith kick practice pad (not really ideal for double bass practice). I definitely agree that the mesh KD-120’s extra rebound allows me to play 10 bpm beyond my true acoustic peak.
      I always felt that the KD-8 might be closer to the feel of an acoustic bass drum, but I wanted to ask someone first.

    Is it a relaxed technique?
    I still don't know what to do to do it.
    Can it be dynamic in speed or strength/volume ?
    Cheers

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, it can be dynamic in speed and strength. A lot of guys trigger when playing really fast double bass for clarity, so you just don’t hear the dynamics so much and seems like it’s only good for speed. However, you can go fast, slow, accent notes and such with it. However, it’s popularity is in the sheer speed and power you can get once you master it. It is probably the most powerful fast technique to go for high speeds other than single strokes - most guys struggle to get past 210-220bpm with singles. Swivel technique can get you past that and it still feels and sounds powerful. I’ve been able to do over 250bpm for a minute straight with clean and even strokes. I can go even faster for shorter runs. It is a somewhat relaxed technique, but the little details of the motion is the hardest for most to master. You swivel with light pressure on the ball of your foot and then push down (rotating your ankle down, not your whole leg) toward the end of each side motion. Each hit is an individual stroke. One stroke is on the left side of the pedal, the other is on the right. Speed and dynamics are totally controllable. When I play it slower I tend to exaggerate the stroke and that helps me keep things fluid. As the speed increases the motion becomes smaller and there is more focus on delivering consistent power on each side of the stroke without tensing up. When going really fast and you’ve built up endurance it is almost a euphoric floating type feeling, almost like there is a flywheel on your legs that keeps everything going and you don’t want to stop. You will probably have a weak side on each foot of your swivel, but that works itself out with practice and focusing on the motion. It takes a lot of focused practice to get it down, but once you do it feels pretty natural.

    • @albertborn
      @albertborn  3 роки тому

      Sí un poco. Es natural acentuar un poco cuando se juega más rápido para mantener la parte superior del ritmo en el tiempo. No siempre acentúo así, solo depende de lo que esté jugando o de lo que se sienta bien.

    You have a lot of discipline. Now use your time to get musical. Anyone can burn through sixteenth notes. Not trying to be rude. You have potential, but learn something innovative. Best wishes, Utah Kid.......

      Thank you. It is not an easy technique to master and it does take discipline. I think you may have missed the point of the video though…. There was no reason for me to be musical or innovative in this video. It was simply to show a particular technique….
