@Doctor Klaper, I love this short video, one question format. Thank you for putting this together for us. I do also appreciate the long “ted talk” like formats. These little blurbs are excellent for sharing with friends that are curious and are not yet plant exclusive whole food eaters.
including high LPa?
Such a sharp mind for a man in his 70s. He won't be getting parkinsons disease.
I share every one of your videos to at least one person. Explaining in short clips like this is very helpful for busy people. Your rock, Dr. K!
Thanks for sharing!!
Dr. Klaper you sir are a hero! I’m in Nurse Practitioner school and I would love to spend time with you to learn more about plant-based medicine! 😊
I've been vegan (whole food plant based) for 5 yrs & cholesterol is about 210. I didn't know what to do (stroke & late onset dementia run in the family) but now I'll have my inflamatory markers tested. Thanks so much for this info!
Do you eat any processed vegan foods? Like soy nuggets?
@@LiberatedMind1 No processed vegan foods at all (only whole foods) and my cholesterol is stubborn. Am trying out the vegsn "portfolio diet" which is designed to help with this.
@@sk.n.9302 Could be hidden sources of refined oil.
@@sk.n.9302Stress, from what ever the cause, affects too. So sleep well and enjoy life 😊
Does this means olive oil is oxidized?
thank you, Dr. Klaper! my vegan cholesterol was high also, but it dropped 135 pts after I stopped eating rice as my primary source of starch, and switched to potatoes every day. And I added flax seeds to my oatmeal along with walnuts. Dr. Grieger also mentions this problem of high cholesterol in wfpb diets and i followed his advice to take out all refined carbs. so now in addition to the above, i don't eat bread.
Out of curiosity... why the switch from rice to potatoes? I know somebody that's vegan that has less than optimal cholesterol. Their diet is pretty good but cholesterol remains elevated above optimal.
thank you for this! i'm currently experimenting with sources of starch. I used to have elevated LDL, so i joined the hype keto diet which touted to help lower LDL on the basis that LDL is caused by sugar n crap foods (aligned with what Dr K teachign here)... only for 1 month LOL as introducing eggs + fish to make up the satiety feeling actually worsened my normal period. so i was back to plant-based, but now whole foods.
So it's like combining what i learned from keto (sugar is a big no) while taking the advantage of the good carbs from complex unrefined starch like potatoes, sweet potatoes, wild rice...
I'll have my blood work next month, let's see.
Keto is partially right on the basis that sugar n junk food "shuts off" the satiety part in your brain. Eating whole foods, even thou starchy veggies (i love root veggies), dont have the similar effect for me. If anything, they bloat me up a bit, which sends the sign that ive eaten enough.
White rice + bread eaten occasionally would be fine (Idk i rarely eat them anw). Let's see my blood work result next month.
You are correct the vegetable oils sold in the grocery store are oxidized oil in a bottle because they are processed by using high heat additives deodorizers extenders etc. Most of the processed food fast food and restaurant food contain these oxidized oils. Eliminating this from the diet is the best thing anyone can do.
agree; I've found that so many people regularly eat foods containing these, it's not good
First and foremost, as Doctor K said: remove dietary sources of cholesterol, which are meat, eggs, dairy. Then yes, look at the oils and the processed foods.
Yes.
Worried about the oil. Ignores the fast food. Sounds pretty typically american. ha
Great clarification, Dr. K! I'll have to rewind the video to get the names of those inflammation markers you said to look out for.
Oxidized cholesterol, hs-CRP, myeloperoxidase, prostaglandin 2, isoprostane, phospholipase.
@@daraghosullivan1157 thank you thank you thank you!

Thank you Dr. K for this amazing information❤
Thank you! Such an amazing channel! ❤🙏
Glad you enjoy it!
Excellent stuff. Thank you so much.
Fantastic and informative answer! Thank you.
Thank you, Doc. I started eating cleaner half a year ago. Before I embarked on the journey, I was alrd on mostly plant-based, but my TC was 200-220. But then I stopped the sugary stuff and ditched eggs/occasional fish, so it's the ideal WFPB. Next month I'm going to have another blood work. Let's see.
2 years ago i had a heart checkup including echo and CTscan and all looked good, so my high TC baffled me, but it gave me time to experiment with my diet. I tried keto (but then i compromised with eating eggs + fish, which gave me super painful period so i stopped that), and keto was highly unsustainable for me. So I'm back to WFPB without counting macros, because sometimes I eat more WFPB fats like from avocado and nuts, sometimes more on carbs, depending on what my body likes that day.
I lost my period 4 months ago after 2 months on keto and with additional stressors, but my hormones level are now back to normal-to-low range, so I watched your video and you mentioned to up the calorie intake to resume the menses.
I agree with that. I was slightly underweight after keto, my doctor also told me to up my foods.
The good thing that keto did was to reset my taste buds, so I no longer crave sweets/desserts/simple carbs.
Other people sharing their experiences on keto/stress/WFPB amenorrhea also shared that its' going to take months perhaps, but I saw signs of improvements.
WFPB is the right track, so I don't worry about when my period is back as long as I eat enough to nourish my body.
Think about it: my period was super painful during keto when i re-intro eggs n fish, although it's been years beforehand on "partially not-clean" plant-based.
Great explanation!
Very helpful thank you! If I had a lot of coconut before my blood test, would that affect the Cholesterol levels?
In before the trolls and deniers
I have very high LDL cholesterol and I highly suspect it's related to my eating highly processed meat substitute foods filled with coconut oil. Hmmmm.
What blood tests does one have to request to find out the inflammatory markers?
Hi Dr K. Really interesting info.
What would you suggest for people who have turned to a wfpb diet only a few years ago and have therefore not been long term vegans? Their arteries might be injured from having previously eaten the wrong diet. Are they still at risk of arteriosclerosis in connection with elevated cholesterol and should they take statins or would their arteries have healed up?
Studies have shown that the body can heal from the damage caused by the previous diet. Pretty quickly in most cases. I'd point you to the studies at the Cleveland clinic on reversing heart disease with WFPB.
I have eaten only low-fat wfpb for several years, but my previous damage has not gone away. Not everything can be cured. Now I take statins too and will see if that leads to any reversal.
@@daraghosullivan1157 Why did you move to WFPB way of eating?
Wow 😳! I eat a vegan WFPB diet and exercise and still struggle to get my cholesterol numbers to the ideal (150 total, 70 LDL). I had never heard that the body could put out more cholesterol as a way of seeking omega 3s!!! I never liked fish, so before going vegan I probably had low omega 3s, and I do need to up my greens, but perhaps an algae based DHA & EPA could help? What is your current research showing you about DHA & EPA supplementation? I know in the past you halted taking it yourself because of a potential risk of prostate cancer. Have you gotten any new studies to report? Thank you both 💛
The trouble with fish is that it also has LDL and saturated fat and the Omega 3s are oxidized even before you eat them. Flax seed and chia seeds and walnuts are awesome sources, sans cruelty.
@@cleangreen2210 yes, I totally agree about the fish! That’s why I was asking Dr K about vegan, algae-based DHA and EPA for those who don’t convert the ALA from flax, chia etc very well to the longer chain DHA & EPA. Dr K used to take Dr Fuhrman’s DHA & EPA product and then he stopped when some articles about too high levels of DHA might increase prostate cancer. So I was wondering if he recommends it to those who are eating a WFPB vegan diet but have low omega 3 levels. I hope he gets back to us!
@@mountainhiker4890 Have you tried taking flax and chia seeds, and eliminating all concentrated omega 6? Until then it's impossible to tell if you're a bad converter.
I don’t consume oil, so my fats come from walnuts & ground flax each day, plus maybe ¼ of an avocado or some pumpkin seeds or cashew cream, but I limit the cashew bc of the omega 6. I usually only have about 4 tbsp of nuts or seeds each day.
@@mountainhiker4890 Even eating just unprocessed plants, I was able to get my cholesterol below 150 only by eliminating ALL high-fat foods (eg nuts or avocado). My only exception is 30-40 grams of flaxseeds daily.
How much oil is safe to consume in a day?
My doctor said my high cholesterol is genetic so I need to take statins. I have a good plant based diet, am normal weight and walk or cycle every day so confused about this. My mom died suddenly aged 53 so wonder if this a factor in my diagnosis. My cholesterol jumped from 6.7 to 8.2 last year and my doctor called me to take the statins!
I am by no means a doctor or a nutritionist, but have you tried cutting down all oils?
Eating omega 3 rich foods like soaked and ground chia and flax is of great help, also hemp seeds, maybe consider supplementing with some algae based dha-epa? If I recall correctly simple carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and white rice are also a factor in raising LDL. I would love to hear an experts opinion about this.
I hope you can get off the statins soon
@@enasksenos thanks for that! Already take those seeds which I grind first plus oats which are supposed to lower cholesterol. I also take omega 3. Won't take the statins!😉
I too have famialhypercholesterolemia (FHC) or did have until I stopped refined carbs, sugar, oil and of course went wfpb. They too wanted to statinate me and I thought there must be something better than drugs. And there was. I done it !
@Peter Rabbit I'm hoping to get a genetic test in May to determine if I have F.H. If so I may take a statin. Loads of info on F.H. on UA-cam.
@@Frankiez220 According to everything I have watched on You Tube F.H. cannot be reversed by diet as its a fault with the liver.
It would be interesting if the person with the higher cholesterol would check protein intake and lower it if high plus check and reduce nuts in favor of flax and or chia. Plus increase soluble fiber like psyllium husk and oats.
👍👍
I’m wfpb and I can’t clear my block artery and my cholesterol is 225 I’m worried that it may be genetic . What do I do?
Amla powder. Look at it in pubmed.
Nice video
including high LPa?
Hello Dr. Klaper. Can a sublingual b12 tablet be cut in half to lower the dose?
Why would you want a lower dose? Its water soluble so you'll just pee out any you don't use with no ill effect.
@@andrewsharratt2399 Excess B12 has been recently linked with increased risk of colon cancer. Just an association at this point -- not causation, but information that made me reconsider how much B12 I take daily. I now take a supplement with no more than 400 mcg daily (sometimes every-other-day). There are a few brands out there that offer the lower dosing in the range of 400-500 mcg.
1:45 but men also make estrogen and women also make testosterone.
Klapper is down playing things because he doesn't quite grok it all.
Activity levels, sunlight and stress and sleep - that's the other factors all heavily tied into the cholesterol numbers.
High cholesterol is a sign of failing endocrine system - the causes are not only dietary it seems.
There are people eating cholesterol who have lower cholesterol numbers. What's up with that ?
Our hormone production is barely studied and widely misunderstood by doctors (plant based or otherwise) but also from what I have seen by the body builders as well.
The only group which sort of understands natural hormone health are the nootropics folks... and they also recommend a WFPB diet more often than runners, or body builders or doctors it would seem...
It’s hard to hear your host. Please improve your mic or volume
Poor me!!☹️ with English couldn't comprehend with this conversation much. I got very high cholesterol more than 4 years too even i carefully eating and avoid animal meat. Eat all vegetables and fruits get skim body but still get cold feet cold hand went to toilet many times in night. My doctor want me to take medicine for cholesterol she worry about my heart in the future.
.... very appreciate if you could use siple words or text explain under UA-cam that I can read and used dictionary. Please 🙏
Hi Emmy, UA-cam auto-generates English subtitles. All you need to do is click the CC on the bottom right of the video to turn these on. They don't immediately appear when I post a video so wait 24 hours and they should be there.
Emmy, have you tried eliminating ALL processed foods (and ALL animal foods)? That includes oils. And have you tried limiting total fat intake to 10% of calories or less? I did this and got good results, but some people still need statins too.
@@daraghosullivan1157 yes I do but I can't avoid all of processed foods and I have to cook for family sometimes it's hard. I don't like chocolate, creamy food everyone surprise when I told them about the result i tried hard more than 5 year still high. My doctor said it's genetic. For me it's hard to believe.
Get off that diet ASAP go on a balanced vegan diet. Also cholesterol does matter, just watch nutrivore his video on this hr debunked it
What about coffee? could that be the culprit?
Yes -- substances in unfiltered coffee can increase cholesterol levels by interfering with cholesterol break-down. Paper-filtered coffee contains less of these substances. Menopause & the concomitant decrease in estrogen can also be responsible for elevated cholesterol.
Thanks for the video; Q: what about the relationship of LDL and HDL on this topic?
I go into deeper discussion in this video:

@@DoctorKlaper thank you; just watched it 👍🏻
Why no discussion of genetic variability on LDL levels? This advice assumes our DNA is perfect and drugs are not beneficial to some individuals. Popping a pill is not the end of the world.
What would be chances of the same all plant eating person, getting Alzheimer's?
