    I trust a guy who thinks for himself, has years of experience with little to no failures, faces the critics on UA-cam without backing down, and who questions the manufacturers instructions. I have had a few name brand products fail even though I followed their instructions to a t. While Isaac and Sal give good build advice, I trust Bob and his no call back business.

    Mr Doyle, I appreciate your videos...Sir, I don't understand wicking... so how high should the wallboard or dura rock be at the bottom, from the mud pan (the distance from the level edge of the mud pan against the wall up to the backer board) Also If I use a ledger board to get the 1/4 inch slope to the drain, can I fill the holes in the liner from the screws the boards would make with Redguard?

  • @GoogleAccount-ii9sj
    @GoogleAccount-ii9sj 9 місяців тому

    Whats the point of redguarding the shower pan and siliconing the drain? Wont that push water to the pan perimeter where it will eventually go under the pan?

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  9 місяців тому

      No because the perimeter gets a coat of red guard, in fact two coats right where the liner meet the mortar... then the floor tile is set, then it is grouted, the wall tile overlaps on that

  • @stevebbkny2394
    @stevebbkny2394 6 місяців тому

    Bob, what silicone do you use around the drain to achieve that seal?

    • @StarrTile

      Any white 100% silicone will work....Any brand

    Hi, thanks for the videos! 3 days ago I mixed 3 bags of quikrete mortar mix (the green bag). I think that I mixed it to dry because the top 1/2" is still sandy. I sprayed it with water but its still not setting up. Do you have any advice. Thanks so much and thanks again for all the videos you share.

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  5 місяців тому

      So you could take some very runny thinset and screed that on top of the surface after you have vacuumed the surface really well, that should be able to save the rest of the mortar and let you go forward

    • @EldenMontagne
      @EldenMontagne 5 місяців тому

      @@StarrTile Do you mean vacuum the 1/2" of sandy mix first, then fill that with thin set? Thanks!

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  5 місяців тому +1

      @@EldenMontagne I mean vacuum off any loose particles dust or sand because obviously you're runny thinset will not stick if you don't

    Out here in vegas or anywhere in the world this shower is no good. Have you ever demoed a shower with greenboard? It does not hold up well against water.
    Greenboard is good for moisture. Its used in restrooms but pros should not be using that inside a shower. Theres many other materials you can use but greenboard is not it. Might as well use drywall since its so similar.
    The easy way and risky way to do a curve is to put nails on it. Never put nails in the curve. Every installer knows this. Never fully redguard the deck mud or else water cant filter through and escape at the bottom of the drain. The redguard will trap all the water at the top.
    The way you wrap the liner on the curve is no good. Youre leaving the stud exposed. And water can leak through the sides into the studs in the step. Figure it out so that instead of folding it inwards fold it to the outside. Its high level stuff.
    A lazer can help level your edges when floating the deck mud. Everything in here is wrong im amazed everyone is aproving this work

      I have been doing this for 23 years slowly but surely I have developed my own ways of the build and everything I do is because of all the failures that I find, I build it that better than I found it and it is 100% Bulletproof....BTW everything you said is *false* but I understand the kool-aid is strong 😉

    Great video! I've looked at FloFX flanges and wondered if I can use the adapter as a clamp to the liner instead of the oatey clamp. If I install an oatey drain bottom, then use the adapter to clamp the liner, then install the FloFX and build out the mud bed, I can waterproof over it with RedGaurd or Hydroban to the top of the FloFX flange. Belt and Suspenders. If water gets passed my top water proofing, it will get trapped by the liner. My only thought is the adapter doesn't have weeps... What do you think?

    Hey Bob, have you ever used the epoxy grout for the floor tile? It supposed to be impervious to any mold. It's a little finicky to work with as epoxy normally is but the outcome is it's pretty good stuff.

    If you do end up failing somewhere. It doesn't matter that there is a liner because there's no pre slope...... And I love your reasoning behind the greenboard. And just not using the correct materials and then saying well. The liquid waterproofing is gonna take care of all that. liquid waterproofing is a preventative. I'm actually at work today so I don't have much time but if you think liquid waterproofing Is A better waterproof her than a 40 mill PVC liner. there's problems here, Bob. Have a great Saturday man..
    .. It's plumb, not level. And when you're on the wall with that six foot level, it doesn't look very plumb

      @StarrTile OK, took 4 minutes and watched it, I chuckled. When you said unsanded grout is no good. that's totally incorrect. I don't know where you ever got that idea. but anyway, that's another subject....... You're saying that every shower's gonna last 30 years. You even said it in the video that it had mold and mildew problems. Which is a problem from the beginning? It didn't look like there was a pre.s Lope so The shower didn't last and it didn't do its job. and I don't claim to do a 100 year. Showers. a shower should last anywhere from 30 to 50 years. and I actually agree with you about people pushing manufacturers stuff, I'm against that and I hate sales people. Alright, my lunch is over. I gotta go back to work. Have a good rest of your day. Most showers don't last 2 years without mold and mildew. Problems due to water issues even with the new foam board systems. And the way you do it. Trusting liquid waterproofing as the end of all end. no way. I'm not trusting liquid water proofing. Even if the manufacturer says it's okay. a liner. A 40 mill liner will and alw....... Answer this for me, why do you think In a real sealed system, the drain is set up the way they have. It set up Is that way, so there will be no residual water around the drain. the way you do it, there is residual water around the drain. Alright, gotta go.
