Why are politics always brought up? Its like whites peoples' race card. Since youre both equal and have nothing to fight over lets put politics into the mix! Idiot
You were gonna give 2500$ for that pick up lolool boy he must have seen you coming. Lol you wine like a old lady buying a car talking about body work if it's gonna be a farm truck why do u care about shaddy body work?
A seller has the right to sell crap for whatever price he thinks its worth. This is not a scam. Junk at the junkyard isn't free. You met the guy, saw the truck, inspected the truck and didn't feel it was worth it. You move on, no scam there. I really dislike buyers like you and especially for making this video trying to burn the guy.
Made him a fair offer...he was lying to me...totally lying...if I had been a teenager and looking for my first truck...I might not have known what to look for...the guy was totally lying about the truck...trying to pull one !
Agreed. Runs and drives is worth more now folks. Know why??? Simple, a new light truck will run about 18k stripped down. Think about it. It's a scam both ways. Houses ROT and go up or retain value where cars loose 90% of thier value???? It's psychological programming to sell new cars at high prices, well the consequence is used cars being of much better value, and worth.
In 2010 on Reno Craigslist I found a 1997 F150 XLT with 118,000 miles. Nevada truck with Zero rust, perfect body and paint. One owner paid $27,000 and $3,000 for the camper shell. Asking $5,500 I paid $4,700. It has turned out to be a solid runner, paid for itself hauling furniture etc. Still runs great.
Excuse me since when did body work ever concern a farmer looking at a truck for farm use? I mean really and since when would any real farmer consider a little pickup truck for real farm work? I'm curious I grew up on a farm.
Ok...here's a "real farmer" response.....I called this guy and asked about the truck ...he said one owner..did have some rust but I had it repaired and welded in all new metal...clearly a lie....I had the engine rebuilt about 6 months ago....it was covered in oil...never been in an accident....clearly it had been hit in front and rear........just had it inspected.....but I couldn't drive it on the road...had to test drive in the parking lot...... It's not the body work...it's the lies that are my concern....now....as for a little pickup.....it will do just fine for what I needed...getting around the farm and running errands.... THE SELLER WAS A BOLD FACED LIER!!!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer well you are dealing with idiots in the south it's no surprise to me that the man was a liar and full of s***. They don't call it the dirty South for nothing
Any time that you can not test drive a vehicle, walk away! And if someone is trying to sell a vehicle and does not let you drive it then they are trying to hide something from you. That by definition is a scam.
I will agree the guy sounded a bit shady but an old toyota truck that runs and drives, normally sells for that much reguardless of all the stuff you talked about, I wouldn't call it a scam.
Good call on passing up on that one! Also just want to point out, just because it has a replacement tailgate doesn't necessarily mean it was in a wreck. My dad has backed up into a tree while cutting firewood with the tailgate down. The guy I bought my land from tried pulling out from under a gooseneck trailer, forgetting the tailgate was still up. There are a lot of reasons why a tailgate may have been replaced.
"if you cant steal it, don't buy it" NO!! you are the worst kind of potential buyer, sellers should hang up on and ignore people like this. (wants a pristine, 20+ year old truck, that has zero issues, never had any repairs done, for nothing)
Right....so the back story here is the guy put this truck out there as a 1 owner...no rust....never wrecked....all original..no issues....proffesional body work...freshly waxed and serviced....rebuilt engine.....and bla bla bla...he was lying through his teeth....and furthermore if you dont "steal it"...meaning get a good value for your $$$$.....then you are just watching too much American Pickers......you make a man an offer for what you know the truck is worth...not some overinflated craigslist lying scam artist price.....the truck was well worth $2,500......that's what I offered....."stealing it" means get a good value for your dollar so you dont loose your ass on it......it's not rocket science that dealers, and folks selling on craigslist over inflate their prices....get a good value for your dollar.....car dealers and folks like this are trying to milk you for every $$$$ ......it's your job as an informed consumer to save every $$$$............see you at CARMAX!! DUH
Definitely not 4000 or $4,500 pickup truck but I can't stand people that come there looking at a vehicle you know is a freaking antique and nitpicking it to death I have ran many people off of my property doing this and advised against it in my posts cash talks BS walks sounds like you were spitting the ladder you never intended to come anywhere close to the asking price in the first place 3000 probably would have caught his attention 3200 probably would have bought it as you said in your post if you can't steal it you don't want it pretty obvious what was going on here he wasn't being very honest and neither were you so in the end you both ended up disappointed and wasting each other's time
The beds on those mid-80s toyotas were all prone to rusting from the inside out. My '86 was in really bad shape when I finally sold it in 2005. The cab didn't rust at all. The story I was told was that the beds were manufacrured in a different plant, and the welds weren't sealed correctly, so water gets trapped from below and rusts its way out. That said, I miss that truck and would love to own a 90s model.
@rush Johnston... where? Honestly want to know... seeing short blocks for 2500 and long for 3700... I would love to buy one for 1k instead of rebuilding
I recently bought a 1996 Dodge Dakota for $750, the only problem was the grille and front bumper were damaged, and no muffler. Dirt cheap in excellent condition.
I own a 1984. The buzzer is normal. My truck does it too. Never killed the battery. The top speed is only 85. I bought it a few months ago for 3300. It's a good little truck. It's not a scam. That truck is well worth 4k
I have a 1985 Toyota, I spent 4.000 $ on it. Everything was replaced , I mean everything. Good quality parts are expensive, compared to cheep Chinese parts.
If its fully rebuilt I can see 4g. with no rust at all, new panels everywhere and fully restored. Transmission should have been rebuilt as well for that price. then you wouldnt want to use it on a farm lol.
There you go, an 85 toyota with everything replaced. I have a 77 Fiat Spider with 148,000 MILES AND ALL original but a $15 fuel pump and a $60 alternator. valve job at 87 K miles because I changed coolant and didn't bleed the air out of the system . oh and a few light bulbs. Still passes california emissions as it first did, runs perfectly
Stan...that was honesty at it's best...and you can read into that statement and be condescending or you can understand that anytime you purchase a vehicle or anything for that matter it's good to be thrifty and get a good value for your cash...that's honesty at it's best....I've owned well over 200 automobiles and loosing money on a bad deal isn't smart...get a value for your hard earned $$$ that's what my statement meant...and it was honesty smacking you right in the ears buddy...it's easy to throw stones at me ....but I think if ya met me or watched a little more you might understand ....here watch this: ua-cam.com/video/BbCpWNrcihQ/v-deo.html
'88 Toyota pickup anywhere that salt is used on the roads in winter will either be rusted out or filled with bondo. Just the way it is. No matter how many owners. Engine is another story.
As a guy who built his own 22re this last summer, the bill came to $2,765. About a third of which was machine work (limited shop availability in my area) I did however do some upgrades to the engine while I was at it such as an 89+ upper intake so I have the newer style IACV, a cam, dual row chain, a brand new head and a better clutch. A little more than I wanted to spend but all said and done I know it's built right and everything is built to spec.
I have an 87 Toyota Pickup, 251,000 miles and have had no issues thus far. It has probably one of Toyota's best engines --- period. The 22R engine is extremely reliable, it's an interference engine with a timing chain, so as far as timing goes, you need not worry about anything there. Mine doesn't haul 1 ton, but Toyota did make a truck just like this that did indeed haul one ton.
+Stoney Ridge Farmer lots of nice clean rust free trucks here in California, you can find a nice running clean truck that for whatever reason won't pass the smog test, people tend to dump them fairly cheap. we had an 88 Toyota, bought brand new, drove it for 252+k, passed the smog check with no fiddling, no accidents, rust free, no leaks, no smoke, it was 2wd, all maintenance was done at dealership. She let it go for 1500. there ARE deals out there, you just have to be on your toes.
4K is waaay too much for an 88, especially with all the history that one has. I think you're right to know crap when you hear it, and your assessment was extremely kind.
I’m also glad you walked away from that pick up that truck is too classic too use as a beater truck, chances are you don’t know how valuable those trucks are..
That truck was mint. There's nothing wrong with it, its just an old truck. Probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to purchase it, ol girl looks like she got quite a bit of life left in her.
To all the negative comments, the truck isn't worth 4 grand, and the owner misrepresented the truck. This is not about dissing the Toyota, it's about the owner lying about the condition. My opinion, walk away.
I understand the had a bad feeling situation and that's great you probly took the better route there but just thought I'd let you know. Toyota engine rebuilds are not cheap at all. I just finished putting a new 22re in a first gen runner and the long block alone cost 1800. So once you add every other new part plus labor if your not doing it yourself 2800 is really cheap.
Maybe that truck was shady, but if you get a Toyota of that vintage, look for a 22r engine and the truck will outlast every other piece of equipment you own!
+MrKfq269 mine has a little on the bottom of the bed and some on the tail gate. But not a rust bucket. Did yours come from up north? Mine came from Tx.
Ahh yes, the old, I just had the engine rebuilt scam. When you're shopping for an old car and truck, and the seller says, "I just had the engine rebuilt." Right away ask, "Let's see your receipts." The odds are he will have nothing to show you. If he's lying about the engine, he's also lying about everything else he figures he can get away with. So shop elsewhere! As for this truck, the body work was crappy. The engine was original and had not been rebuilt. If that old guy is a scammer, he's pretty bad at scamming.
I just sold a 1990 SR5 4x4. Paid $2k for it. Had to replace the radiator, AC ad a window regulator.. Cost me $600. Sold it for $3400 - Woo Hoo. I was the 3rd owner. And it was in pristine shape for a 1990 4x4. No rust. Only one very small sent that I'd have to point out to you to see. The interior was in great shape. No tears or worn spots in the seats. They're out there. You just gotta find them.
I can't believe your pointing out the flaws of the body, but before you got there your talking about cows, donkeys, bulls, sheeps, snakes, pigs elephants, giraffes bumping, biting, clawing humping your truck. Unbelievable
It's not the body flaws that are the issue...it's the lies he told about all the body work...clearly full of crap...I dont care that it was rusty...I do care that I'm being lied to
$2500 is about fair for that truck...it’s a 88, and has a shady background. The key buzzer stayed on bc old Toyota’s switch wear out. You could prolly just jerk the key out of the switch. There wasn’t anything horribly wrong with the truck but the seller...man there was some shade there...
I bought a 85 Toyota pickup with 80k that was all original and looked showroom on Craigslist for $2500. I've had it 5 yrs 125k now and has been cheap to run. The 22r runs like a sewing machine it's so smooth.
something to keep in mind. toyota trucks (all of them) have a rust issue at the front of the rear leaf springs. even ones driven in dry climates are susceptible to this.
michael adams not true. Only first gen tacos do. My 85s body is completely rotting around a solid frame. It has spent most its life on the California coast and has been used mainly on the beach in the sand.
michael adams starting in what year. Because i had a 1971. 1974 and a 1978 and had no rust problems at the leaf springs. The 71 was the best of all of them.
Keeping It Dutch no shit I bought a 94 last year for 1800 and a 97 explorer with a blown trans. Rebuilt the engine myself last November with $200 spent on a rebuild kit. Sold it for 5000 last tax season.
Fair enough, some people will go great lengths to hype up the truck then when you get there will say "well this happened because so and so" and given all the problems the truck has will still try to get you to buy the truck and all those little bumps and dings will have a story. Good thing you inspected the truck.
I'm sure you found a farm truck by now but if you're looking for another one...I have a 92 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd that was given to me. Cab corners and wheel arches are rotten but it's solid underneath. The bed floot is also beat up since it was actually used as a truck.Previous owner had trans rebuilt n new tires all around (I have his reciepts n warranty paperwork for trans) before it spun a rod bearing. I put a Jasper reman v-6 n new gas tank in it. Under 500 miles on engine just to make sure everything is right. Trans n tires have about 5k miles. The truck ain't pretty but is a worker. It won't pull a big trailer but will haul anything you want cause it's rated 8600# gvw. I'm asking $3500 but can negotiate some. I've known the previous owner for many years and he bought the truck used from a local dealer back in 94 so he got many years of work out of it n whoever buys it will get many more.
Brand new Toyota fender costs 80? A brand new Toyota engine for 1000? Complaining about bodywork on a farm truck? A fender for mine is 340. Minimum. Not even primered. OEM or quality aftermarket gaskets/bearings/pistons ran me 2400 alone for my 2F. Buy a clapped out Ford or Chevy, it's probably more your speed
Maybe you dont understand...the issue wasnt the truck...it was the shady body work and mechanic work and the lies he told about them....he just out right lied about the truck and was trying to get one over on me
My toyota truck was in worse condition when i traded my built mazda truck and gave him extra money. I spent over 1k in parts making that mazda suspension better. My engine is clean now that i replaced all the seals, but the guy i traded is a friend and he spent 2,500 getting my engine rebuilt. I had to replace my valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket though. I suppose he was being cheap where he could cause I’ve spent over 1000 in parts this month to fix my truck. The seller was a body guy and I’m an automechanic. My trucks body is in worse condition, but these trucks have value and they last forever. Just gonna be an expensive restoration. The seller didnt do a perfect body job on my truck either because it wasnt a car he was planning to keep. His cars, trucks and motorcycles are beautiful because he is a body guy. Anyways, i hope this perspective helps
Times have changed. I grew up on a farm in the Midwest in the late 70's and 80's. We didn't have fairly nice trucks (except the month it took for a fairly nice one to be put to work and get thrashed). We had dependable pile of crap farm trucks on the farm. That said, Toyota trucks hold up well where the roads aren't salted. I have a couple on my ranch in Oregon with sound frames and 300,000 + miles. I had one in Pennsylvania years ago and it rusted out like the one you looked at. I'm with you on not supporting shadiness, regardless if it's a deal or not.
1. Rear plate was VA Antique, avail. to any vehicle 25+ model-years old. It's a permanent plate that costs only about $80; no annual re-registration/fees forever afterward. Truck cannot be used on the public roads for anything other than parades, "testing operation", or occasional pleasure travel; no hauling is allowed. Good news: the insurance is cheap as s**t (maybe $100/year), and to get the plate, all the owner has to do is "certify" (by personal affidavit) that the vehicle is safe to drive. No official inspections, no state police involvement, nothing. This guy went Antique b/c he knew it couldn't pass inspection to retain a standard registration. 2. To me, a number of pesky/crazy electrical faults means either a bad alternator, or a **flood car** that the owner has been paid off for as a total loss, but that has been (illegally) been put back on the market, or both. You were right to steer clear of this bomb-in-the-making.
I'm 2nd owner on my 87 has 195k miles exact bought from an old guy who garage kept it and took care of it since he was old he wasn't able to get up under and clean the frame so I got up under and replaced all the spots rusting out and all I drove it one morning and my boss literally offered me $4k for it because it was so nice that was 2 days after I got it now since I didn't have a garage it's faded lol but I sure do take care of it hope to get at least 500k miles on ut
Yea, $1000 would maybe cover the cost of a new head and some new valves. But thats about it $2800 for a whole engine sounds about right. Quality stuffs expensive
Luis.. You CANNOT build a 100% top to bottom rebuilt engine with 100% toyota parts for a mere $1000.. I guarantee if you find one, its got the cheapest crap parts they could find inside it... Think of it like this.. They wouldnt sell it for 1000 if it cost more then that to build, nobody does things to loose money or break even.. Which means a fully rebuilt engine for $1000 cost them 500 to 700 to build. 5 to 700 to rebuild an engine = cheapest of the cheap crap parts. You get what you pay for. Which is why a proper toyota engine rebuild is expensive
I have a 1988 22 r pickup…automatic. 160,000 miles on her. One owner. Does need a rear transmission seal…. And started to leak a little oil. So I don’t drive it until I can get a that fixed! She purrs like a kitty though
Toyota has actually issued a internal tsb/recall. If you have a truck with frame rot (that is not heavily modified or been previously "repaired") You can have the entire frame replaced at a dealership. To my knowledge they have gone back as far as 2000. And the two vehicles that I saw had a majority of frame mounted pieces replaced as well. Its definately worth investigating
Well "mac daddy" you should get something bigger than a small toyota pick up to face off with them killer horses, goats, cows, and donkeys , oh and them monster chickens ! Buy an old Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 say a 1970-75 . No electronics, simple and easy to work on and capable of most things a "real" farm truck needs to do . Do you get out a bed in the morning (4:30 am) put your muck boots on warm up your tractor then warm your loader up load 75 bales of alfalfa then drive out open and close a series of gates break open and kick out the alfalfa hay while inspecting your herd for injuries, disease and such ? Then fill 3 tons of hog feed into trailer and go and fill feed bins with a chute grabbing any (dead hogs) that their might be ? Make sure all water supply to everthing is working (ice free in winter) get back to house kick off muck boots set down go over the plans of the day and add the (oh shit didn't plan for that problem) have breakfast help with getting kids off to school all before 7:30 am ? ......Then the farming day starts and I get into my 2005 Ford F350 crew cab dually 4x4 and drive out into where those "monster horse's that rip off bumpers , bump into fenders, bite the metal " and feed them in thier field feeders a mix of grass and alfalfa. Funny thing is that the last 30 years I've never so much as got a scratch on my rigs . Oh wait a steer one time tried scratching his ass on my rear bumper, so with throwing in 115-140 bales, loading 1500 lbs feed totes , quads, and other farm related work, I've never damaged my truck since I bought them . Perhaps you should consider another line of work if your having issues with animals damaging your truck. ....Good luck and God bless
You just never know what will happen buying or selling on Craigslist. I've sold so many things on Craigslist or the people never showed up. When I lived in Illinois I was selling my bass boat and this guy from southern Illinois drove up along way and when he got to my house he tried to get it for less money. It only had 5 hours run time on motor just didn't use it. He checked it all out ran the motor and still tried to knock price down but I was firm . He bought it for $11,000. All cash. Love your channel!
everyone is going to try to lower your price thats just the way deals work glad your story came with a happy ending my dad and I took a drive 2.5hrs to Indianapolis to look at a trailer, we had talked to the seller and told him we where on our way cash in hand we actually showed up earlier than we had estimated but he had already sold the trailer to someone else if he couldn't hold to his agreement long enough for us to drive over he could of at least sent a text calling off the deal
I've never sold anything on CL, only bought a couple kayaks. Last one I bought was pretty much brand new with a layer of dust. Guy wanted $200. Came with paddle and vest. I googled it and it was $400 new. Left message, guy calls back and I tell him I'll take it. Meet up 10 at night (I also had a headache so I wanted to just get it and go), looked it over really quick and said ok, here's the cash. He says, "I'm actually impressed you didn't try to start haggling on the price. Here's 20 back." Cool, thank you, and was on my way. Only time I posted something online for sale was an old Honda accord for $1100 on a Honda collector site. Nothing but scammers calling and emailing. (I'm in WA) phone rings- "Hi, I'm in SC (iirc) and want to buy that honda, do you have a paypal account?"
Same thing JUST happened to me on a deal for a '67 Ford Econoline Heavy Duty van in No. Philadelphia. Weather and the holidays prevented me from getting there until last weekend, but we had stayed in close touch via text message, and he knew I had cash in hand. While I'm about halfway (90 mins.) into my drive to the truck, I send him a text as final confirmation of my arrival time, and he replies, "Sorry dude, it just left here."
If you're looking for a farm vehicle, look for something made prior to 1973. Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. It will run as well as you are willing to invest time into regular maintenance. No computerized bullshit, no fuel injection, no unnecessary crap of any kind, just a machine that does what it was built to do.
ik04 you my get a better deal go and get a ford ranger no a toyota . i think there is a lot off people that i know that will pay that money for a toyota pickup with the 22re engine and if is the one with the solid axle. Probably more .
Solid beater farm trucks are the 1988-1998 Chevy or GMC Trucks. The 350 V8’s are reliable and strong. The 4L60E transmissions are good. If it needs fixing there are plenty of parts that are cheap. And most everything on the truck is easy to get at.
You don't want a farm truck. You want a Brand new condition truck for 4,000. Had that Toyota pickup from 88 been for sale around here for grand it would have been gone. You want a mackdaddy 88 that's for sure!!
jan henderson .... the guy makes himself look like a Total Goof!! Must have had a pretty sheltered life getting everything handed to him. A farm truck around here is a Thousand dollar 4 wheel drive and that's all it is. You want a Pristine Cream Puff from 88.. go to the dealer and buy a new one "farmer"
That might have been a "beater" ten years ago but an 88 toyota truck is highly sought after nowadays. Forget bondo, people pay good money for those even with the wheels wells rusted completely rusted off.
Yea..I've been watching some online auctions...thing about it is that those darn trucks go for good money around here....TV shows have everyone going to, and watching autions driving up prices
Stoney Ridge Farmer dude my parents owned a farm we had a dozen pickups,my step-dad mostly would get them at auctions, but most of ours came from people he knew who took care of their stuff and knew to get hold of him when they were ready to part ways, you made the right call ,the truck was shit and there are deals out there, don't be scared to travel I do alot of car shopping online and one thing for sure is the price of a vehicle will vary significantly from one part of the country to the other, one states garbage is another states gems it seems to me
Another thing to look at on 80s and 90a Toyota trucks.... The frame will crack at the front spring perch on rear suspension. No so much from rust but metal fatigue... Easy enough to fix with some plating abd drilling.. But it's a strong bargaining chip
Toyota makes a GREAT truck but ill never own one because i cant see paying 5-6k on a 30 year old truck with 250000 mileswhen 2-3k will buy a 15 year old dodge/ford/chevy. Not knocking them, just people want more than i feel like theyre worth.
I agree....and I also think that somehow folks think they are more truck than they really are....these models are know for rust issues...just like this one had...I made him a fair offer and it would have made a great farm beater....but that's what the truck was worth on a good day...the dude was full of crap...and the truck was not what he portrayed...if it was 100% like new or close...$5,500 at best ...if it was moderately ok....mechanically sound...not pouring oil and rusty....$4000--$4500....and if it was leaky, squeaky and had crappy body work...$2500! That's what I offered..he was asking $4500 and told me he turned down $4k...once again another lie!!
Stoney Ridge Farmer I wouldn't have offered that even. I learned to drive stick in a Toyota and they're great but a Nissan, Ranger, Mitsubishi, etc. can be picked up for $1,500 that do not need much of anything and in the long run are pretty much the same for half the price. $3000 will buy a nearly flawless Nissan or Mitsu of the same year. Had many Nissans and i didnt love them but they never broke down. Paid $2,300 for my 01 Ram and it runs and drives like new doesnt look perfect but has good paint and decent body and Toyotas are great trucks but value wise, theu aren't worth the money. They're popular because thats what highschoolers drive and park in the Walmart parking lot and the only reason theyre worth so mucb is because people decided they were based on popularity.
Plus, one of the MOST DEPENDABLE trucks ive ever had i paid 500 bucls for and drove it home. 1980 K10 Chevy with a 292 straight 6 and 3 on the tree. It was ugly but it ran like brand new.
I remember when i bought a 88 Toyota 4×4 pickup brand new it was $12,000 drove it 140.000 miles 6years got totaled in 94 blue book was $5800 that guy was nuts wanting $4000 They were rust buckets back then even with rust proofing done to it from the factory
$2000. at best. I had an 86 it rusted away but never let me down . When i sold it it had 250,000 miles but no fenders or box . Rusted away. Stay away from v6. I loved my little truck . Wish they still made small trucks. Love your videos.
That truck (if it was an 86... he said 86 and 88 so i don't know which) with no issues and a little rust would be worth MORE than $4000 due to the solid axle. I still see early 90s models going for over $10k and early 00s going for close to $20k
1. Toyota pickups till 90ish, the beds were sitting in the south for a year before put on the shipped chassis. The beds rust horribly especially in the south. 2. You can get a new engine from any parts store for 1500 out the door, performance parts can get expensive quick. 3. The cheap valve covers leak every year. 4. The body on an old toyota rust horribly, most are bondoed in the south. 5. Old toyota ingnitions are horrible and the lock rings break you can remove the key most of the time while running lol. 6. The vintage toyota market has exploded with the newer ones not aging well or being as easy to modify. What you are complaining about i would expect from an old toyota in the south. I live in colorado, very rare to see bondo because they do not rust that bad, or like me you do not care and will smash on rocks. The extra cab is rare too, more desireable. I will agree 4 is to much, but if somebody just wants to make it a crawler then they will pay it. They are getting rare and collectors are going nutz lol! Thanks for the video, I WILL NEVER BUY AND OLD TOYOTA FROM THE SOUTH EVER! Been my law since day one over 10 years ago lol
Buddy...it's all about the lies this guy told me...I'm not worried about the body as much as I am worried that he said it was professionally done and new metal was welded in....no way man...that was a straight up bondo patch job...probably held in place with steel wool!
Stoney Ridge Farmer after you mention all the defects to the guy offer him half of wat he wants with so many you probably could have got him to pay you to buy it.
Have you ever looked at one of those Japanese mini trucks, we use one on our property, I to used old trucks and side by side’s , bought a mini truck about 4 years ago and love it, put a 6’8” plow on it 3 years ago and plow a half mile long driveway with it, it’s a impressive little truck.
"If you can't steal it, don't buy it.". What a bunch of cheapskate BS. Most people work hard for their money. Here's an idea: pay people a fair price! If you do, then they can do the same when they buy something from another person. Your mentality is troubling because, while it saves you money, it withholds it from others who may...and probably do...need it.
So...you must go to Carmax for your cars....what's fair to the seller doesnt matter and should not matter moraly to the buyer...keep on paying asking prices for cars and trucks and houses for that matter....folks price things with room to move...if this mentality troubles you I have several things I'd like to unload on you for a "fair price".....my money is what matters...not this guys money or feelings....or whatever snowflake BS you are trying to promote...get a good deal...make a good fair offer...and steal it if you can..vehicles depreciate...they are nearly always a bad investment buddy
We never heard whitey make the claims that OP is claiming were made. He COULD be lying but as well all know nobody makes YT videos packed full of BS. Or do they? ;) Credibility is low.
I know about that fine tooth comb. I was looking at an 02 Dodge 1500 quad cab. People wanted 5k for it and the first thing I saw was dash trim was missing. Had a fog light switch, no fogs (found the original bumper under the tonneau cover with the fogs), tires were bald, drove okay, but had a pull. Stopped and made sure I didn’t hear anything unusual, checked all the switches and lights. Found a vacuum leak. Got back to the place killed it and wanted to see how it would start after. 🤣 Damn battery exploded under the hood. I tossed the keys back and told them to knock some off the price.
So...for those of you who don't understand sayings like "don't take any wooden nickels" and "break a leg" ...what I mean is if you're buying a used vehicle...get a good value...don't screw yourself out of the gate.....that's what " don't buy it unless you can steal it" means buddy....
What you should've been looking for 1. Door sag, what kinda shape are the hinges is 2. Check the suspension, how much wear are the leafs showing, how are the shocks looking 3. Check for oil leaks, check the plug wells R-series engines have press-fit plug tubes, if they're leaking the heads warped and you got bigger issues on the horizon 4. What kinda shape was the frame in, how much cancer did it have, if any and where was it? 5. See if it starts Igniter's for R-series engines aint cheap. The chime was prolly the result of a lousy relay, a twenty-dollar bill and five minites of your time would've resolved the issue. You were concerned about shoddy body work on the box of the truck...the part of the truck that takes the brunt if the abuse...and is basic-bitch shit to replace. The old 'Yota Taco's like that have a rep; they're mechanically sound and boderline indestructible. You're paying for that reputation when you buy that truck. Just like Supra's have a cool-kids tax and a drift tax built into their second market price. If you were looking for a farm truck, a work truck, and truck you can trust, you shouldn't have been so preoccupied withthe aesthetics. The fact that you didnt check the basics tells me that you're a tenderfoot...sorry bro.
Honestly I think it is about honestly. If I were buying the truck and he told me well yes it had a few crashes but nothing serious, i did a bad body work but mostly because I only wanted to prevent rust. I would be more than understanding if a seller lied to me. When I have sold my used cars honestly has been my policy. I said everything that is wrong or needs attention with the car then proceed with everything I have done.
That's it...if he'd been honest...I never would have had any beef....but lying at every other word...not cool...sneaky and wrong...still made him a fair offer at $2500
I'm sure it is on camera...however the dude was just lying to me over and over again....no telling what I'm getting into....just because it says Toyota 22RE doesn't make it gold...this truck has hidden rust issues and the dude was lying through his teeth
Yeah, I've played this Craigslist game. Went to look at a 2002 Camaro that the owner said was in "great condition". I went to look at it and the paint was peeling, cigarette burns in the carpet, trim broken, and knobs missing off the radio. Tell-tale sign that the owner just didn't care about that the vehicle. They wanted $4,000, I offered $3,000. They wouldn't budge so I passed. I think I dodged a bullet.
4000 for that... is that dude on drugs... I know a guy that has a NICE, big 89 Chevy 3500, dually, 454 engine, runs and looks amazing... for 3,500 dollars... If i had 3500, i would be jumping on it
i bought one of these for $1200.00 a few years ago... i had the engine re-built professionally for 3k, put another 1k worth of steering and suspension components in it myself on the weekends (which is a bitch on a 30 year old car so bring a breaker bar). it's a 30 year old truck, the paint will suck if it hasn't already peeled... i patched so many spots on my truch with a rattle can, but mine was nearly immaculate in the engine bay... I wasn't expecting anything out of it, but you'd generally be surprised about how robust these things are. The one thing everyone should watch out for is that the key cylinder on the starter sees heavy wear after 30 years. My bet is that this guy pulled the key out of the starter without turning it off completely... electrical problems are extremely rare. On mine, I could literally remove the key from the car while my car was running and it would just keep on going... i later learned that I could start the thing with a spoon. Someone else must've realized that one day too... it was stolen from right outside my house a few years back. My advice; buy the cheapest one you can find and put a little money into it. It will serve you well... even the 3vze motor is bullet proof after a minor rebuild... my 180k mile version passed a california smog test without incident, and that was before the rebuild... the prior owner had never even changed the oil in all that time. As long as the frame's not bent you're good to go. A word to the wise; I've owned 2 of these now and they were both stolen from right outside my house ten years apart... wire a kill switch into it as soon as you get it, people who like this truck like it enough to steal it.
You do sound like a liberal
Lol says the guy with a Mercedes as his profile pic. Lol
Why are politics always brought up? Its like whites peoples' race card. Since youre both equal and have nothing to fight over lets put politics into the mix! Idiot
Why insult the guy like that?
You were gonna give 2500$ for that pick up lolool boy he must have seen you coming. Lol you wine like a old lady buying a car talking about body work if it's gonna be a farm truck why do u care about shaddy body work?
Not really, he sounds like a dude who doesnt want to spend 4 grand on a 1200 dollar vehicle.
How is that liberal?
You just want something reliable??? that is the most reliable vehicle you'll ever drive. how dare you disrespect the name of a classic yota 4x4
lol....hey I didn't disrespect anything brotha...that's why I went looking for toyota in the first place...have owned several of these little trucks
aha okay i'm exaggerating, good on you
❤
Dude, the 3vz is a giant piece of shit. Yes the 22re is bombproof amazing but the 6cyl is garbage.
Suck it. It's not the most reliable. The Toyota pickup the the shittiest truck they made. The tundra was the most reliable
I collect and rebuild toyotas. That things is definitely worth $4K even for 2017. SR5 package and bucket seats. Looked pretty complete to me.
yep....looks good on TV...a closer look in person and you would have passed...this guy was lying through his teeth the whole time
A seller has the right to sell crap for whatever price he thinks its worth.
Exactly
If you lie. You’re trying to scam.
@Klaa2 parts wear out, cars really don't.
I agree...why tell me it was just inspected...then tell me I can't drive it...hmmm...shady
I will agree the guy sounded a bit shady but an old toyota truck that runs and drives, normally sells for that much reguardless of all the stuff you talked about, I wouldn't call it a scam.
Exactly, the truck was worth money, you cant find 1st gen's that easily anymore. This was so dumb to watch, some folks have know clue.
@@KingKatRider i like how he said you can probably buy a new engine for a thousand bucks
I replaced my 88 tailgate because it had a little rust and because replacement tailgates are dirt cheap for this truck
Could’ve also been stolen, not an uncommon thing to happen
DUH
He wants a "beater" with a perfect body???? for farm use??? What that____________!
Definitely not 4000 or $4,500 pickup truck but I can't stand people that come there looking at a vehicle you know is a freaking antique and nitpicking it to death I have ran many people off of my property doing this and advised against it in my posts cash talks BS walks sounds like you were spitting the ladder you never intended to come anywhere close to the asking price in the first place 3000 probably would have caught his attention 3200 probably would have bought it as you said in your post if you can't steal it you don't want it pretty obvious what was going on here he wasn't being very honest and neither were you so in the end you both ended up disappointed and wasting each other's time
3000 Is even too high for that pos
JeremyFromJersey so your saying you would pay 4000 for this Toyota? Ya fucking right 😂
The beds on those mid-80s toyotas were all prone to rusting from the inside out. My '86 was in really bad shape when I finally sold it in 2005. The cab didn't rust at all. The story I was told was that the beds were manufacrured in a different plant, and the welds weren't sealed correctly, so water gets trapped from below and rusts its way out. That said, I miss that truck and would love to own a 90s model.
that was a waste of 10 minutes
you mean you were able to watch the whole ten minute I think I cut it off in about 60 seconds
Its 7:37 idiot
Why not just cut to the chase ! You just ramble on with use less information.
Dude...who's rambling now?
The truth is that this was a Tinder meet...
Grandpaw rejected this Robin Williams wannabe so he made a hate video about his truck.
I'd like to know where you can buy a brand-new engine for 1k
A 22re like that can be bought remanufactured for around 1k if you have a core.
@rush Johnston... where? Honestly want to know... seeing short blocks for 2500 and long for 3700... I would love to buy one for 1k instead of rebuilding
@@CrushedOilPans rush Johnson is full of it, he’s a liar

"I'm not going to buy it unless I can steal it". And you call the other guy dishonest???

As In get it cheap you idiot
Lol, dude it's a saying.
I'll bet that motor screams!
The problem is if he would lie about one thing he would lie about anything.
Exactly!
Well said.
No it isnt lol. These trucks go for alot of money in descent shape.
I’m also glad you walked away from that pick up that truck is too classic too use as a beater truck, chances are you don’t know how valuable those trucks are..
LOL you should see what he bought instead
Man..everything is super expensive nowadays!
Maybe that truck was shady, but if you get a Toyota of that vintage, look for a 22r engine and the truck will outlast every other piece of equipment you own!
22r is awesome. Had an 85 with a 22r. 280k complete rust bucket. Still passed inspection.
theninja001 I owned my Toyota Tacoma before I owned my tractors lol
+MrKfq269 mine has a little on the bottom of the bed and some on the tail gate. But not a rust bucket. Did yours come from up north? Mine came from Tx.
The truck spent its life in NJ. I paid 500 for it and drove it for 6 years daily.
You have to adjust the valves every 25,000 miles with the 22r but they do run forever
Ahh yes, the old, I just had the engine rebuilt scam.
When you're shopping for an old car and truck, and the seller says, "I just had the engine rebuilt."
Right away ask, "Let's see your receipts."
The odds are he will have nothing to show you. If he's lying about the engine, he's also lying about everything else he figures he can get away with.
So shop elsewhere!
As for this truck, the body work was crappy. The engine was original and had not been rebuilt.
If that old guy is a scammer, he's pretty bad at scamming.
Bhhahahhaha
I just sold a 1990 SR5 4x4. Paid $2k for it. Had to replace the radiator, AC ad a window regulator.. Cost me $600. Sold it for $3400 - Woo Hoo. I was the 3rd owner. And it was in pristine shape for a 1990 4x4. No rust. Only one very small sent that I'd have to point out to you to see. The interior was in great shape. No tears or worn spots in the seats. They're out there. You just gotta find them.
If you're going to look at old Toyotas first thing you want to look at is the frame.. it is general maintenance to retorque valve cover.

I agree...$2500 is the right price for that truck...especially since I couldn't believe a word the owner said...who knows what mystery lies beneath!!
Stoney Ridge Farmer ohhhhhh you could have found out! I mean it would have been a $4000 archeological discovery....lol
I bought a 85 Toyota pickup with 80k that was all original and looked showroom on Craigslist for $2500. I've had it 5 yrs 125k now and has been cheap to run. The 22r runs like a sewing machine it's so smooth.
I think you're absolutely right. Don't ever settle....
something to keep in mind. toyota trucks (all of them) have a rust issue at the front of the rear leaf springs. even ones driven in dry climates are susceptible to this.
Bought a 2011 brand new and within a year all the leaf springs we're broke and I never too it off tar! It's bad!
michael adams not true. Only first gen tacos do. My 85s body is completely rotting around a solid frame. It has spent most its life on the California coast and has been used mainly on the beach in the sand.

Not mine, sold in Washington and driven in Utah most of its life. Frame is spotless.
michael adams starting in what year. Because i had a 1971. 1974 and a 1978 and had no rust problems at the leaf springs. The 71 was the best of all of them.
I paid $2800 for my 88 yota, sold it 2 years later for $3500..glade you walked away from that.

Keeping It Dutch no shit I bought a 94 last year for 1800 and a 97 explorer with a blown trans. Rebuilt the engine myself last November with $200 spent on a rebuild kit. Sold it for 5000 last tax season.
My mum got me a 76 hilux with everything original and got it running with new points and other simple things and now it starts perfectly
Not Up In Here that's awesome
where are you going to get a new toyota engine for a $1000 . If a professional put it in 2800 sounds about right
Or a fender for $50-$60?????
$40.71 for the fender here: amzn.to/2yS2oyU
You can google the engine if you want..maybe more along the $1500 range for a nice rebuilt on minus core
my shop charges 2500 but were in the bay area.
Does not include removing and reinstalling the engine or swapping the many parts that do not come with said new engine.
When he says new does he mean brand new or does he mean new as in he's putting a different engine in that's been used before.
HOLY SHIT, I SAW THIS THING ON MY LOCAL CRAIGSLIST! What in the hell are the odds?

Yea, $1000 would maybe cover the cost of a new head and some new valves. But thats about it
$2800 for a whole engine sounds about right.
Quality stuffs expensive
Walleye Willy nah bro they really do have em for 1000
1,500 dollar crate motor
Thousand bucks is about right.
I have a 1988 22 r pickup…automatic. 160,000 miles on her. One owner. Does need a rear transmission seal…. And started to leak a little oil. So I don’t drive it until I can get a that fixed! She purrs like a kitty though
oh you gotta see my most recent vid....look back a couple weeks and you'll see the creampuff 88 toyota I found
Toyota has actually issued a internal tsb/recall.
P W a Toyota can take the load, they are the masters. Amazing off road and reliable.
People who keep donkeys, mules and horses are usually hobby farmers. If you're trying to make a living you aren't feeding pets.
Island Mike says a fanboy that doesn't know shit
You just never know what will happen buying or selling on Craigslist. I've sold so many things on Craigslist or the people never showed up. When I lived in Illinois I was selling my bass boat and this guy from southern Illinois drove up along way and when he got to my house he tried to get it for less money. It only had 5 hours run time on motor just didn't use it. He checked it all out ran the motor and still tried to knock price down but I was firm . He bought it for $11,000. All cash. Love your channel!
everyone is going to try to lower your price thats just the way deals work
glad your story came with a happy ending
my dad and I took a drive 2.5hrs to Indianapolis to look at a trailer, we had talked to the seller and told him we where on our way cash in hand
we actually showed up earlier than we had estimated but he had already sold the trailer to someone else
if he couldn't hold to his agreement long enough for us to drive over he could of at least sent a text calling off the deal
I wish I still had my 85 4x4...toyota for life!
if the 22re starts and runs, tranny shifts and the frame is soild.. its a gem!
Exactly.. I get that it had his issues but man if it’s a 22re an there no major rust it’s worth 4K easy
If you're looking for a farm vehicle, look for something made prior to 1973. Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. It will run as well as you are willing to invest time into regular maintenance. No computerized bullshit, no fuel injection, no unnecessary crap of any kind, just a machine that does what it was built to do.
get a older 3/4 ton 4x4 flatbed
$4,000 is way too much for a thousand dollar truck! Auctions are the best paces to get a super cheap deal!
ik04 you my get a better deal go and get a ford ranger no a toyota . i think there is a lot off people that i know that will pay that money for a toyota pickup with the 22re engine and if is the one with the solid axle. Probably more .
Ah so grasshopper.
I agree that when someone starts being dishonest about little things I immediately don't trust them. Makes you wonder what else they're hiding.
Solid beater farm trucks are the 1988-1998 Chevy or GMC Trucks. The 350 V8’s are reliable and strong. The 4L60E transmissions are good. If it needs fixing there are plenty of parts that are cheap. And most everything on the truck is easy to get at.
I got an old 82 for free, all it needed was a clutch. Now have about a grand into it lol. Worth about 3
You don't want a farm truck. You want a Brand new condition truck for 4,000. Had that Toyota pickup from 88 been for sale around here for grand it would have been gone. You want a mackdaddy 88 that's for sure!!
Yooperest1997 yup! It sure seemed like it
jan henderson .... the guy makes himself look like a Total Goof!! Must have had a pretty sheltered life getting everything handed to him. A farm truck around here is a Thousand dollar 4 wheel drive and that's all it is. You want a Pristine Cream Puff from 88.. go to the dealer and buy a new one "farmer"
I think his point is he doesnt want to buy something and end up with major problems in the next 6 months
Allen Crow Yes! I agree that's exactly what Josh was saying.
That might have been a "beater" ten years ago but an 88 toyota truck is highly sought after nowadays. Forget bondo, people pay good money for those even with the wheels wells rusted completely rusted off.
Glad Mrs. Stoney talked you out of that 1 ! The Bronco won't do?
cant stuff a roll of hay in it lol
Have you considered purchasing a state owned vehicle at auction for a farm truck? Check with the state for when they auction their vehicles.
Yea..I've been watching some online auctions...thing about it is that those darn trucks go for good money around here....TV shows have everyone going to, and watching autions driving up prices
Stoney Ridge Farmer dude my parents owned a farm we had a dozen pickups,my step-dad mostly would get them at auctions, but most of ours came from people he knew who took care of their stuff and knew to get hold of him when they were ready to part ways, you made the right call ,the truck was shit and there are deals out there, don't be scared to travel I do alot of car shopping online and one thing for sure is the price of a vehicle will vary significantly from one part of the country to the other, one states garbage is another states gems it seems to me
My son bought a 94 Yota.Rebuilt the motor, runs like a champ. Maybe reason did not just replace motor is ya cant hardly Find a Motor!
Another thing to look at on 80s and 90a Toyota trucks.... The frame will crack at the front spring perch on rear suspension. No so much from rust but metal fatigue... Easy enough to fix with some plating abd drilling.. But it's a strong bargaining chip
A Beater/farm truck around here is a $500 to $1000.
what? where?
Dan H my local South bend Craigslist they run and drive mostly and have heat they will have rust in varying degrees just beaters with heaters.
+Jaron King if indiana ?
Dan H yes local to me. Northern Indiana southern Michigan Craigslist. Cheap trucks are quite common hear.
+Jaron King I'm gonna check it out , I'm in Chicago. somewhat close
Eric Chapman don't forget: you get what you pay for, sad but true, not trying to be an ass,
I remember when i bought a 88 Toyota 4×4 pickup brand new it was $12,000 drove it 140.000 miles 6years got totaled in 94 blue book was $5800 that guy was nuts wanting $4000 They were rust buckets back then even with rust proofing done to it from the factory
My 85 has very little rust. Must be 87 and up with bad rust problems or road salts states. Not sure.
I live in northern Michigan. If I even see an old Toyota its amazing. One in that physical condition would easily go for that around here.
$2000. at best. I had an 86 it rusted away but never let me down . When i sold it it had 250,000 miles but no fenders or box . Rusted away. Stay away from v6. I loved my little truck . Wish they still made small trucks. Love your videos.
That truck without the issues you mentioned wouldn't be worth 4k unless it had low miles I wouldn't even have looked the truck at 4k
I woulda paid 1500 if it was in really good condition. its 30 freaking years old.
That truck (if it was an 86... he said 86 and 88 so i don't know which) with no issues and a little rust would be worth MORE than $4000 due to the solid axle. I still see early 90s models going for over $10k and early 00s going for close to $20k
The bad body work is spots where it rusted it’s a Toyota pickup
bigmac22ify all vehicles by then would have rusted lol
They even rust here in the meddle east jist as bad. I don't know where Toyota reliability crab came from.
Noshit
Good job not buying the truck! Why can't folks just be honest? So sad! But! Good for y'all!
jan henderson ... I wonder if someone stuck it to him and he is looking to return the favor(?)
The fact that it still had the original bed and the frame wasn't rotted. Well maybe 4k was high but he wasn't far from what it's worth
In Hawai‘i, that would be considered gold haha. You’d easily see a rust bucket version of that go for 6-8k on Craigslist
Naw you did good if you can clearly see the guy bull@ing on something you obviously can't trust him
Who cares bout the body its a farm truck dude
Buddy...it's all about the lies this guy told me...I'm not worried about the body as much as I am worried that he said it was professionally done and new metal was welded in....no way man...that was a straight up bondo patch job...probably held in place with steel wool!
+Stoney Ridge Farmer don't forget about the duct tape holding the finders on too! lol! If it good enough for nascar its good to go! 😂👍👍👍
Stoney Ridge Farmer after you mention all the defects to the guy offer him half of wat he wants with so many you probably could have got him to pay you to buy it.
he offered him 2500 and he wasnt biting. 2500 was more than fair.
Adam Adamson yep
Have you ever looked at one of those Japanese mini trucks, we use one on our property, I to used old trucks and side by side’s , bought a mini truck about 4 years ago and love it, put a 6’8” plow on it 3 years ago and plow a half mile long driveway with it, it’s a impressive little truck.
The beard has spoken ! thanks for the insight ...BUYER BEWARE
lol
Bunch of used car salesmen commenting, lol. "I can sell it for what I want!" LOL! Good luck with that.
All things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it
We never heard whitey make the claims that OP is claiming were made. He COULD be lying but as well all know nobody makes YT videos packed full of BS. Or do they? ;) Credibility is low.
That seller and truck were SHADY AF!!
I have raised cattle and goats all my life and never once has one bumped into my truck much less tried to bite it. All hat, no cattle.
Im not gonna buy it unless i can steal it. Who is the shady one here sir?
So...for those of you who don't understand sayings like "don't take any wooden nickels" and "break a leg" ...what I mean is if you're buying a used vehicle...get a good value...don't screw yourself out of the gate.....that's what " don't buy it unless you can steal it" means buddy....
6:18 So you're going to go 55-70 mph on your farm?
I like the way Mr. Stoney Ridge cuts away from Mrs Stoney Ridge, quick glance on with the show lolol.
Yep...she's a bit camera shy
What you should've been looking for
1. Door sag, what kinda shape are the hinges is
2. Check the suspension, how much wear are the leafs showing, how are the shocks looking
3. Check for oil leaks, check the plug wells R-series engines have press-fit plug tubes, if they're leaking the heads warped and you got bigger issues on the horizon
The fact that you didnt check the basics tells me that you're a tenderfoot...sorry bro.
no kidding hes a yankee of course theyre gonna be rusted on the body all of them are, youre right about everything you said.
That's it...if he'd been honest...I never would have had any beef....but lying at every other word...not cool...sneaky and wrong...still made him a fair offer at $2500
Surely that grey haired ole gent wouldn't lie to a buyer!!!
Tip to all: Buy the truck..not the story.
Except when the price matches the story instead of the truck.
Truck is well worth 4k
I'm sure it is on camera...however the dude was just lying to me over and over again....no telling what I'm getting into....just because it says Toyota 22RE doesn't make it gold...this truck has hidden rust issues and the dude was lying through his teeth
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer up here in Canada that thing is a 6 k truck.
Tell me where I can get a new toyota engine for a grand.....I will take ten of them today
I think I dodged a bullet.
the buzzer is normal i have an 84 that i got for 100 bucks and you just have to turn the key back another click
4k for a 1988 Toyota? Are you nuts?
4000 for that... is that dude on drugs... I know a guy that has a NICE, big 89 Chevy 3500, dually, 454 engine, runs and looks amazing... for 3,500 dollars... If i had 3500, i would be jumping on it
Yep but that thing is a gas hog.
It is but stll a beautiful truck... I have he basic 93 1500 extended cab, I gave 600 for mine with 168xxx miles on it
if youre driving around the yard, mpg isnt as important.
Beater truck, nicer than my truck....
lol
i bought one of these for $1200.00 a few years ago... i had the engine re-built professionally for 3k, put another 1k worth of steering and suspension components in it myself on the weekends (which is a bitch on a 30 year old car so bring a breaker bar). it's a 30 year old truck, the paint will suck if it hasn't already peeled... i patched so many spots on my truch with a rattle can, but mine was nearly immaculate in the engine bay...
