I just came back to this video to check a setting and can't believe almost a quarter million people were as intrigued by this weird, cool truck, and owner's story, as I was. Thank you all for watching and sharing! ZK
My grandfather have me my 94 Toyota Pickup with the split window when I was 13. It had 40,678 miles on it. I just got it back on the road a few days ago. Love my truck, it's such a fun truck to drive.
Had an '87 which I bought brand new. Dropped it with blocks in the back, torsion adjustment up front. A set of American Racing wheels, exhaust, Grant steering wheel and I was good to go back in those mini trucking days. AND it could still carry a load!
Marty's Damn Channel indeed it is. I drove a 1990 Toyota Pickup for about a year. It was a great “truckish”. I say truckish because it looks like a truck but with a 22re, it’s lacking the power. When I think of a truck, I think of a F150. Anyway, the problem that I had with the 22re was that the engine liked to overheat. The internals eventually went bad. Up to 24 mpg around town and almost 32 mpg on the highway. Now I own a 1997 GMC Sierra. I miss the Toyota.
I have a ‘91 with modifications to the 22re. Best motor there is as far as reliability. Mine has also been modified to have much better power. I am the only owner and it has 250,000 on the ticker. Never had one problem with it. I also own a 2007 Tundra.
I have the exact same truck except it is a manual 5-speed and it is white. The truck is darn near bulletproof, and I work it to death. I have been able to tow over 1,700 lbs with it and it has a bone stock 22RE engine. That amount to weight may not seem like much for any other truck but it is quite a lot for only 114 HP. The engine may be totally gutless, but it just won't die no matter how much abuse it takes. When I first got the truck, it overheated all the time because it had a bad water pump. At times I would just have to drive it with the needle on red just to get to work, which is something no one should ever do. But I did it anyway, and the engine still runs just fine today, which is amazing that it could withstand overheating so many times and live through it like nothing happened. I learned how to drive stick in that truck, and I still have it today. Now I have moved on to bigger and better trucks, but I still daily drive the Toyota pickup mainly because it has half decent fuel economy, it is really easy to work on, and it is incredibly reliable.
My brother had a very similar truck. 1 to 2 years older,5 speed, same air suspension setup,22r motor. The motor was rebuilt bored over making it bigger displacement and had a stage one or 2 drop in cam. It had factory staggered wheels from the Mitsubishi starion.
John 89 his had exhaust but I think it was just a custom cat back. It was a really nice truck and had a more aggressive stance than this one. Factory light blue color.
I miss trucks this size, not this anemic 4cyl auto 2wd job, but this body over a V6 5spd & 4wd. IF 2wd is your goal; 2jz swap the bugger and be done with it. *EASILY MY FAVORITE ONE TAKE SINCE ZACK TOOK OVER*
First car I learn manual in - Holden rodeo, basically the same thing. The gearbox had not pulley's and you needed full lock to turn 90 degrees. Beautiful character of a car.
Great looking truck! Our family had owned a 1994 5spd 22RE that I just sold back in January and it was great, hardly ever a problem and in 22 years of ownership was just the best truck ever. I'm hoping the 01 CRV I'm using to replace it brings me the same luck!
Great, great trucks. Super simple. Solid. Had a 92 with 230,000 miles on the 22re, 5speed. Ran great. Still had ice cold ac. Now have a 78. Only 100,000 miles. 20r, 5speed. Runs awesome. Drive it anywhere. Can overload the crap out of them, still cruise 70mph, sipping fuel, no problem. Dead nuts reliable.
I'm so glad you noticed the exceptional cornering abilities. It's a HUGE shame that it was an automatic. Much of the experience was lost with having the automatic.
Cool truck man! I have a 1994 Toyota pickup with a purpose built 22-re turbo engine...CP forged pistons w/prepped rods and a 22RTE cylinder head w/full SDS engine management. Currently running 15psi with a Garrett T3/T4 hybrid turbo. Very zippy truck with the mods done to it. These 22re engines are pretty much bullet proof once you replace the stock plastic timing chain guides with the metal backed timing chain guides. Also, ARP head studs are a must on boosted applications.
LC engineering double throw timing chain I got about $3000 worth of bolt on and bolt -in parts from LC engineering probably one of the only companies that mess with these motors
I had a '94 2wd 5 speed with several suspension and engine mods. Really enjoyed driving it. Particularly after the lightweight flywheel and short shifter was installed.
You guys are awesome! This is my 1st take on your channel and I'm impressed that your review of Marks car emphasized the education that is gained by his attempts to make changes to his baby truck. Very practical and very clean nice mods great job Mark! And thanks Matt I really liked your analysis of Marks project truck.
I almost never watch one takes, but the TST should know that Zack is doing great. Speaks very well, made great points when speaking with the guy who owns the truck and generally was enjoyable to watch. I clicked for the mini truck but this was a very well made video overall.
To be fair, I’ve had reliability issues with mine, but it’s been things like starters, alternators and whatnot. The engine itself has been bulletproof. I’ve got videos of mine if you guys wanna see them. I recently put some restored Mitsubishi Starion wheels on mine and a new exhaust.
Those will go out after enough time. They're rotating magnets with wires and belts. Alternators have vents so they're exposed to air, water, and dry out.
Yep my 1990 has no name. They are toyota pick-ups or a 1/2 ton. I love my truck. Slow but EXTREMELY reliable . Ive drove mine 60k in 2 years, im over 230,000 miles and just installed new timing chain. I got 1993 toyota paseo bucket seats. The BEST economy buckets ever. Very little padding but still comfy on 8hr drives. Plus great bolstering for small guys. Few things about these trucks , they need no weight for snow driving (manuals anyway), and the A/C is AMAZING. I register 37°F out of vents on 90°F day on the highway. Its a fridge in there. I paid 450$ for mine. BUT in Midwest they RUST BAD. Mines on its last legs without frame being risky. The non power steering is easy but dead.
Great review Zach your doing an awesome job with these one takes! I have a 1990 Toyota pickup 4x4 with a 5 speed and it is a unique truck that I don't want to get rid of even though it is about to fall in half, there is something special about it and its super reliable.
22-RE bro, old school NET(new era of trucks) crew. they were notorious in socal, for turbo Toyota trucks. they were super light, and that 22re took to boost well.
Good to see these trucks survived out west. I swear humidity alone caused the bodies and frames to rust. In the northeast some looked awful when only a few years old.
You were probably looking at Tacomas... the generic Toyota pickups that they didn't even have a model name (Hilux everywhere else in the world) are indestructable.
So awesome I have one of these. I called a place onlinle to buy some plugs and wires years ago and told me about the motor and how much you can actually mod this thing. Now you guys are doing a one take on it. Hysterical. Mines a big POS though with only 81,000 miles haha
You might be surprised by actual weight capacity prior to changing suspension. I have a 2005 base Tacoma 4 cylinder with crank Windows. It Carries 1,200 lbs in bed.
The brake balance is off because he probably didn't put in a manual balancing valve when he deleted the load sensing pressure valve (often deleted when you lower these). They make kits for most of the common swaps for the truck.
Awesome video, I listen to all the podcasts and love them. My buddy has a first gen 4Runner with a 22re he’s got an MR2 seat fitted in it, we just rebuilt the driveshaft and swapped in a new transfer case, I’ve actually got a video on it if any of you guys are into 4runners, maybe you could comment some tips or mods you think should be done
1J and 7M swaps are very common with these 4x4 and I am sure you can do it for under 800 bucks now days. Back when my 22RE went out, and I 1J swapped it for about 1500 in 2006. An even cheaper option is a 7M because the non turbo makes about 200hp and if you can get a turbocharged one, then your looking around 220-230 hp while keeping your reliability. Good luck~
I have one of these trucks, but is a 91 5 speed manual. Pretty fun car. I want to lower it and thats why im here. Im trying to copy his suspension set up
A 1UZ weighs only 40 lbs more than a 22R-E. How is that too heavy? A stock 1UZ is arguably the best swap for this thing. It's more than enough power, but not overpowered. You stay in the Toyota family and now have a V8. It's period correct. Strong engine like the 22R-E. They're not expensive. Depends on what you value I guess. Obviously if you just want the most power, LS swap, but I don't see how you can beat the 1UZ. 2JZ swap if you're going for power also. But keeping it stock, you can't beat it. Edit: Nevermind, I could have swore it was 40 lbs more. But apparently it's more around 75.
I use to own a 97 Tacoma single cab with 5 speed and 2RZ engine and to be honestly I love to run up and down hwy 74 in the city of palm desert and it was fun for a 2.7 lits engine... and I miss it it got stolen 2 years ago...
I had a 1993 pickup, same 2wd/reg cab spec but 5 speed. Power is decent with the 5 speed, its not fast but it doesn't feel like a dog IMO. Compared to the 2004 Tacoma 2wd/reg cab/5 speed that replaced it, the 1993 was better in a few respects. It was quieter, more sound insulation. The powerband on the 22-RE was a lot torquier/less peaky/more power down low. It wasn't as fast as the 2RZ-FE, but that motor you had to rev the nuts off it and shift a lot more to use the power. Also the 1993 handled flatter and the turn in was actually pretty damn quick for a truck. Mainly I think it was the light weight. The big difference between the 1993 and 2004 were the brakes, so much better on that 2004 truck with ABS, that 1993 was sketch with the small 14" tires and easy to lock up brakes.
I drove almost this exact same truck with a 5spd (lowered and everything) it was a delivery truck for a shop I worked for they can be all kinds of fun in the Canyons and back roads yeah no power but probably not as bad as with the automatic.
This is a cool looking truck for toy truckin! Now to fix the power and transmission issues. You swap it because you can Zack. Plus it makes it even weirder.
Drop an LS in it, FTW. True story, the very first tuner cars I ever saw were mini trucks that started popping up on base when I was stationed in San Diego in 1997. Until then, mini trucks were only done up like low riders or whatever but these ones were set up like race cars...
I had a 91 ford ranger with a 5 speed and let me tell you, that transmission made that vehicle! The next mod on this thing needs to be a manual trans swap
This is almost the exactly same setup that I did with my '93 Nissan Hardbody. A 4" drop all around with air shocks in back; except I just went cheap and adjusted the torsion bars. I traveled all over the country between job sites, so I loaded it up with everything I needed. I really miss the world of modding mini trucks.
My parents had an 86 Toyota pickup long bed, with a manual transmission. It was such a piece of shit but it was so reliable and we could literally do anything to it and it would be fine.
Really kind and diplomatic review, Zach. You focused on the positives. Nice work. I like to see cars like this. If it costs more than $100k or goes more than 200 mph I'm bored by it and won't bother to watch.
I have 98' L200, almost everything is same. Except engine and transmission, mine is noisy as hell. Also suspension adjustments get well with that car, normally u don't wanna drive it daily.
I've got something similar in Australia. It's an 86 Toyota Corona with the same 22re but a w55 5 speed manual trans and it's a lot lighter than the Hilux. Just like a corolla but a tad bigger. I've got xt130 lca's for a bit of camber and sw20 mr2 short stroke struts Low powered, wet weather weapon
You need a new intro, especially since it's not just Matt doing the one takes anymore. I'm not offering btw, you genuinely don't want my shitty efforts
Engine swap it with a tundra 5.7 V8. That would be insane. And would be still reliable but a lot faster. Even a 4 cylinder from the Corolla would be cool
Nice work with the mini truck I own a 92 short bed my self on 17s with 4"blocks can go any lower due to my work am in the construction field so I have to keep it at that but good job
I had a 2000 ranger 2wd stepside extended cab 5 speed when I was 19. Lowered 3" front 5" rear. With 3 12" jl audio subs in the cab that blurred your vision. Man I had alot of sexual encounters with young females in that truck. Epic truck.
The only down side of this truck it's that is automatic if it was manual it will be soooooo bullet proof live the truck I wish they never stop making that engine i had one back in the days for work and it never left me down
I just came back to this video to check a setting and can't believe almost a quarter million people were as intrigued by this weird, cool truck, and owner's story, as I was. Thank you all for watching and sharing! ZK
Are you guys looking for more car/trucks to review? I have a unique build that I think you guys would love to see and take for a spin
Beautiful truck! I have one like it ya know 😉..
Andrew which vid? Which car? 😊
Andrew I am. I thought you were talking about
The Gs in the back, which is also mine, but wasn’t sure what vid you were referring to😎
what over fenders are you running? just picked up a 95 and am interested.
logic has a pretty cool car
😂
My grandfather have me my 94 Toyota Pickup with the split window when I was 13. It had 40,678 miles on it. I just got it back on the road a few days ago. Love my truck, it's such a fun truck to drive.
Glad minitrucks are getting some love.
People don't give them credit for the time and effort that is put into building them they just laugh
I'm glad you are a humble, and non-click-baity person. Makes me respect and want to watch you despite Matt now being gone.
qxANGELxp WHAT'S GOOD NYYYUUKKKAA
This is awesome! Its good to see someone doing something different and by themselves vs "let's just modify a car that everyone modifies"
Had an '87 which I bought brand new. Dropped it with blocks in the back, torsion adjustment up front. A set of American Racing wheels, exhaust, Grant steering wheel and I was good to go back in those mini trucking days. AND it could still carry a load!
22R and 22RE One of the best motors ever made.
Marty's Damn Channel indeed it is. I drove a 1990 Toyota Pickup for about a year. It was a great “truckish”. I say truckish because it looks like a truck but with a 22re, it’s lacking the power. 1994 Toyota are unbeatable, reason why I say that is because my Toyota has 739000 miles on it and it's still going
@@jimdelaney1071 what have you done to it? im considering putting some work into mine so i can beat my friends miata in the canyon.

That is a helluva story. I learned to drive (in general) in a first gen 4Runner and a truck that was 7 years older than this one.
I either missed something or Matt's lost a lot of weight.
Cool truck, keep up the mods, make it Frankenstein AF!
Sarkazmo Loafy Matt retired from the show. he still does the podcast and special cars
Too much nut powder.
He's lost weight too lol
I had the same joke and it was literally the first comment. I guess I wasn’t as original as I thought.
And apparently the Rogaine is working out well too.
My brother had a very similar truck. 1 to 2 years older,5 speed, same air suspension setup,22r motor. The motor was rebuilt bored over making it bigger displacement and had a stage one or 2 drop in cam. It had factory staggered wheels from the Mitsubishi starion.
Them wheels are hard to find now been looking for some for about 3 years now
@@matexf4c those wheels are fantastic. Literally perfect from the factory. They're aggressive.
Definitely needs the 5 speed, love these things.
John 89 it'd make a world of difference. I had a 89 and loved it
John 89 my brother had the five speed bored over 22r and a drop in cam.
The 22re sounds beastly with a cam, full exhaust and intake, I'm saving up to rebuild mine now.
John 89 his had exhaust but I think it was just a custom cat back. It was a really nice truck and had a more aggressive stance than this one. Factory light blue color.
I have a 94 2WD, grey, just like the one in this video with a 5 speed I am currently restoring.
I also have a 94 grey 2WD Toyota pickup but it's a 5 speed and it's stock. It makes a great little kayak hauler.

I agree
Once you get over 45 mph it doesn’t make any difference it’s only 114hp.
Very interesting build, nice to see something new
Cool truck man! I have a 1994 Toyota pickup with a purpose built 22-re turbo engine...CP forged pistons w/prepped rods and a 22RTE cylinder head w/full SDS engine management. I thought this was gonna be the +600hp 2JZ swapped one I saw floating on UA-cam! Still, I'm a fan of this generation of Toyota trucks
As much as I like these Toyota trucks, that LFA in the wild was the best part of this video!

Centrifugal supercharger and manual swap would be PERFECTION for me. Still a cool build as is.
A supercharged 22RE. Hm. Well, as the inventor of the donut burger said, "Why the hell not?"
The world needs both of these things.
I say, build the 22R-E into a 22R-ZTE. Yes, twincharge the bitch, that'd be nasty.
Or go turbo which works too! Lots of parts available from LC Engineering to go turbocharged.

Ok, so put the battery in the back then. I looked up the weight and actually it's about 75 lbs more. The point still remains though.

Drop an LS in it, FTW. True story, the very first tuner cars I ever saw were mini trucks that started popping up on base when I was stationed in San Diego in 1997. Until then, mini trucks were only done up like low riders or whatever but these ones were set up like race cars...
DAT LFA THO
Dat pick up tho
i know right! i had to pause the video because that sound
RIGHT
I had a 91 ford ranger with a 5 speed and let me tell you, that transmission made that vehicle! The next mod on this thing needs to be a manual trans swap
These are the best lite trucks ever made.
If it rubs, then change the damn rubber..... Zack ftw!
Looks like a fun project maybe a bit more power nothing to crazy
oOOOoo, back to the world of mini trucks!
I had a '91 Hardbody :) Was a good little truck.
Hi. Guys. I have a Toyota 91. And l lower the suspension but the original shocks. ( front ) are not working good. What kind of shocks do you recomend
Adding a 1UZ to these once the 22RE finally gives out around 300-400K has been vetted and parts/tutorials are available.
Very unique truck and you did an awesome job of highlighting the strong points.
Why do I like this so much!? I want to put an SR or a 1J in it for some strange reason.
I have 98' L200, almost everything is same. Except engine and transmission, mine is noisy as hell. Also suspension adjustments get well with that car, normally u don't wanna drive it daily.
had one of these, a lot of stories with that truck. Thanks Zack for doing this one!
i have a 93 with an ls1/t56. should be driving it this summer
I've got something similar in Australia. It's an 86 Toyota Corona with the same 22re but a w55 5 speed manual trans and it's a lot lighter than the Hilux. Just like a corolla but a tad bigger.
I've got xt130 lca's for a bit of camber and sw20 mr2 short stroke struts
Low powered, wet weather weapon
Interesting build, excellent review!!
One of the best trucks ever...only in California 🤙🤙
You need a new intro, especially since it's not just Matt doing the one takes anymore.
I'm not offering btw, you genuinely don't want my shitty efforts
Love the watch btw! Cameron does a great job!
We want your shitty efforts Henry...
One is being made as we speak!
Most beautiful 90s hilux iv ever seen.
For me a ‘94 five speed. Needs tlc but is still an amazing daily driver
22RE turbo kit ranging from $500 to 2k. You’ll run high 13’s on a stock block boosting 10-12 pounds.
Damn that’s what’s up, didn’t know Logic was into mini trucks.
Small Toyota trucks with the Toyota 1uzfe's non-VVTI motor would be a perfect match. Would literally last forever....
needs a nice engine swap like a 3S-GTE or a 20V with ITB's or something cool like that...
0ttoman 2.0liter high revving beams motor
1UZ
LSx or Viper V10 lmao
This truck reminds me of my 98 SR5 taco inspired me to see my vision for my truck thru
How do i get my Toyota pickup on here? I have an 89 Toyota pickup which i swapped a supercharged 5vz.
Not Matt it’s not a one take what up with this cast switch?
New rule: To submit a car for "TheSmokingTire" the vehicle should be able to actually to smoke the tires.
Engine swap it with a tundra 5.7 V8. That would be insane. And would be still reliable but a lot faster. Even a 4 cylinder from the Corolla would be cool
He's need a cam from lc engineering and a few other things and 5 speed. Besides that, leave it alone n drive it
Weber 38 sidedrafts and a 20r head
favourite truck ever i got a skoda pick up we cant get a toyota this year in Bosnia
Have you seen the rotary version of this truck I saw one in Hawaii straight piped it was insane!
I like seeing different vehicles and this one is very cool
Always wanted to do a pickup build. This cool car is giving me ideas. Check out the screamer Mike Musto reviewed a few years back.
Nice work with the mini truck I own a 92 short bed my self on 17s with 4"blocks can go any lower due to my work am in the construction field so I have to keep it at that but good job
It’s not a mishmash, it’s not Frankenstein! It’s very functional!!!
I had a 2000 ranger 2wd stepside extended cab 5 speed when I was 19. Lowered 3" front 5" rear. With 3 12" jl audio subs in the cab that blurred your vision. Man I had alot of sexual encounters with young females in that truck. Epic truck.
The only down side of this truck it's that is automatic if it was manual it will be soooooo bullet proof live the truck I wish they never stop making that engine i had one back in the days for work and it never left me down
What canyon is this ?
I’m picking up a ‘90 Toyota Truck tomorrow. 22r bone stock 184k miles. 4 speed. I’m so pumped to own something with less than 110 hp. Lmao
Awesome title... killin it zack... but if it was a 5speed atleast ratchet shifter it would be more fun
