I can't see it hitting the black. The cue ball stopped and moves a millimeter after it, but it's all normal. The cue ball doesn't have to hit the black to move like that.

@@thomasmcdonagh8280 Yeah I kind of understood that once we exchanged messages and appreciate that "great decision" can mean more than one thing under these circumstances.
Actually, as much as originally I was skeptical, you can see the black ball move very slightly on impact. You can see the reflection on the black budge. It just touched the black then the cueball settled back a fraction with the nap of the cloth. The ref made the best decision he could but he didn't see it clearly and neither did the cameras. They also didn't take the time to really analyse the footage carefully in the heat of the moment.
Watch it in 1080p, and at 0.25 speed. The click on normal speed makes you think it hit, but even without sound, I think you can see the slightest of movements. But it's still very hard to see, as the camera isn't still and there is little reference to spot movement...the reflection stays the same, and of course there's green everywhere.
I believe it touched. If you look at the side of the black ball furthest from the white, there is the tiniest of movements. Not a trick of the light or shadow play. But it's so slight that the ref can't be blamed in the slightest and he was backed up as it not touching or inconclusive.

Looking on the reflection on the ball it did not seem to move at all. Right decision by the ref if in doubt call a miss. Looking at the reaction with selby he seemed not to know either. So right to call a miss from the ref.
I didn't think it hit but looking again now I'm thinking it did hit. I'm sure the black moved. If you get a chance to see the side-on view you will see just how slow the referee is in getting his head down in position to see. He was too late. The balls can hit and roll apart. It happens all the time. In fact it is hard to place them so they actually rest against each other.
After watching at 0.25 speed the black does appear to wobble very slightly, but it's barely perceptible, so the referee is right to call this a miss You cannot expect the referee to catch this
easy, just clean your ears out & listen. It touched, Yan (world-class ref) missed it, Mark won the match anyways. Even my neighbour's goldfish heard it. Good God Melih, are you deaf, as well as blind
I have excellent eyesight and at a quarter speed it won't say the cue ball didn't hit the black but there's no doubt the black stays exactly where it was.
Everyone saying you can hear it click - That's not the balls. For one thing it happens after the white stops. It only clicks one time, and it's from the right corner camera. It doesn't click from the left shot, why? During the replays the audio is of what's happening right then, it's not audio from the shot. You're probably just hearing a click from the commentary booth.
I think the ref's decision was fair regardless of whether it hit or not, because if it's still not clear after a week of viral replays, there is reasonable doubt. And I reckon a hit needs to be clear beyond reasonable doubt if you don't want a foul to be called.
The decision goes with the ref but he was wrong. He only looks to see if the balls are touching after the shot was played and the cue ball has stopped moving.
The white ball rolled against the nap of the cloth. After being stopped by the black ball at very slow speed the nap pushed it back. Mark Selby said immediately that he played a correct shot, and it was the truth. He knew it best. And from that incident on I have the highest respect for Mark Selby because he accepted the referee's decision although Selby knew better. He did not even try to make a big thing out of it although he was right, not the referee. Congratulations Mark Selby, you showed real character!

The referee was making the right decision. After all this is his profession in refereeing. Further, with the speed pf the cue ball, going that slow, what are the chance of touching ball???
What has the slow speed of the cue ball got to do with whether it hit the black ball or not. It can be going as slow as it needs to be for it to hit the black.
