      Make sure you get to know their two best early albums, "Kimono My House", (a true masterpiece) and "Propaganda" Their videos are just as awesome, my favorites right here on youtube are "Dick Around", "Perfume", "The Rythm Thief", and "When Do I Get to Sing My Way" Ron is a genius songwriter who could have easily written for Broadway, yet he wrote some real Bangers, too!

      I was introduced to them about three years ago when an Icelandic guy I barely know sent me a link to "Dick Around" over Facebook. I was hooked IMMEDIATELY. And very soon, Sparks became the reason I hate half my friends - in the week after getting that link on Facebook, I had the following conversation with more than one person:
      ME: Hey, I just discovered this awesome band, you have to check them out, they're incredible! They're called Sparks, and...
      FRIEND: Oh, yeah, I know Sparks! I love them, I've been listening to them for years!
      ME: Oh, really? OK. So...how long have we known each other?
      FRIEND: Uhh...dunno...twenty, maybe twenty five years?
      ME: And in all that time you never mentioned Sparks to me? I hate you, you are dead to me!

    This is a master class in (a)3 minute pop genius - never mind that it exceeds those brackets and (b)wonderful film clip smarts, plus (and always including) lyrical and humorous brilliance. Ron and Russell exceed on these and many other fronts. Smiles all around (aways a perfect pop result) Heartfelt thanks, R&R

  • @desireekcR

    Maybe the best music video ever... incredibly clever lyrics and visuals. How can they keep exceeding themselves?

  • @songfacts
    @songfacts 7 років тому +136

    Ron Mael made it clear in our interview that this song is not a dig at religion. Here's a quote: " It's more just a statement on people who feel that somebody else has to solve all of their problems. They can't do anything by themselves."

    • @7otto666
      @7otto666 7 років тому +19

      Aw, he ought not to have to make any statement about it. They're great artists, and anyone familiar with their work knows that they are the great wise-asses of ROCK, and would thus not be offended.

    • @Flamquill
      @Flamquill 5 років тому +23

      No. Not a dig at religion, but at some people in religion. If you think about it, it can be seen as a view on people only seeking prayer for answers. It's like the joke about a guy during a flood who prays for god to save him. A bus offers to take him to safety, but he declines saying God will save him. Then a boat comes by where he declines again. Then a helicopter. He proceeds to die and when he asks god why he didn't save him, he replies, "I sent you a bus, a boat, and a helicopter." Answers in front of them, and they choose to pray instead.

    • @michael0.770
      @michael0.770 5 років тому +9

      I am guessing Ron means it both ways, both taking a stab at religion and also those who are always victims. But if I were him, I might well say what he said :-)

    • @erinmcgee1160
      @erinmcgee1160 3 роки тому +6

      Idk who would interpret it as a dig at religion anyway; if anything, it's just a dig at people who use it as a crutch

    • @susanbutcher696
      @susanbutcher696 3 роки тому +4

      "This is your Creator with a questionaire." When the subject of religion appears in their songs, the existence of God or Heaven is usually assumed, and used as a springboard for black comedy or as a foil for the absurdities of life on Earth. It doesn't imply any actual belief on the part of the songwriter.

    LYRICS by Ron Mael /Sparks ✨
    Historically, historically, we make an appeal
    To something greater than we are when we need to heal
    But don't concern him with your little band-aid affair
    His temper will flare
    He'll rise from his chair
    What the hell is it this time?
    My God is great, my God is good
    He loves every man
    But show consideration when you pray in demands
    His plate is filled with famine and clean wholesome air
    If Arsenal wins
    He really don't care
    What the hell is it this time?
    What the hell is it this time?
    You've asked him for redemption twenty times in the past
    And twenty times he's granted it, and again you have asked
    But twenty is the limit and he's now getting peeved
    And when he gets peeved
    It's not to be believed
    What the hell is it this time?
    What the hell is it this time?
    My God is great, my God is good
    He loves every man
    He loves every man
    He loves every man
    My God is great, my God is good
    But show some restraint
    If you feeling faint
    Appeal to a saint
    What the hell is it this time?
    It's you again, it's you again, you get on my nerves
    What the hell is it this time?
    I've billions to serve
    You get on my nerves
    What the hell is it this time?
    What the hell is it this time?
    (Repeat)
    My girl has left, my dog has left, I've cracked up my car
    The only one who'll listen to me's tending the bar
    He turns his back and walks away and I say "Hey you,
    I ain't hardly through."
    He says "Yeah you're through."
    Our God is great, our God good
    He loves every man
    But there's a limit to what even he can withstand
    So be selective with what you slip under his door
    If it isn't a war
    It may be ignored
    What the hell is it this time?
    My God is great, my God is good but don't waste his time
    What the hell is it this time?
    He's dealing with crime
    So don't waste his time
    What the hell is it this time?
    Historically, historically, we think we've carte blanch
    What the hell is it this time?
    He don't take carte blanche
    He don't take carte blanche
    What the hell is it this time?
    What the hell is it this time?
    (Repeat)

    My favourite song from the album next to "Missionary Position". One of the best song topics that Ron & Russell have tackled in a long time. :)
