Honestly it’s a nonissue and we shouldn’t spend too much time debating it.

we are discussing the book of Jacob (James) in our family prayer and this name change got our attention. In our local vernacular language (Tamil) it is translated as Jacob (Yokobu) only. Still how come Jacob could be named as James is not clear...

But why did Wycliffe do it? Did people named James before the English Bible know (or think) that their name was an equivalent of Jakob?
I think it's believable that James comes from French "Gemmes" from Latin "Iacomus."
How was King James referred to in legal Latin texts? Why did Catholic James I commission a non- Latin Bible?

What's written in the book of Jacob is nothing related to James.

You know, every single English translation that I’ve consulted from before the KJV has his name as James. Every single one. Yet you claim it is politically motivated. The KJV had the tendency to stick with traditional names. Thus the Latin Calvary, Diana, Jupiter, Mercury, and names ending is -us instead of -os.
To the English speaking world, that name was James. So, yes, I do consider your view to be a conspiracy theory. James isn’t an English name any more than George is. They are both names imported into English from other languages. I’ll let you guess the origin of George.
