They really have a talent for catchy choruses! Also I love about them, that they change their style on every album. If you find the time, do an album reaction to their "Aquarius" Album! It's one of my favorite concept albums by them. Other than that, you might enjoy "Crystallised", "Atlas Stone", or the song "Visions".
Yea definitely will be doing more. Thanks for the suggestions... Full album reviews will come later after I have a good/better handle on the bands. Cheers
@@captainmorgan1978 both :D But I guess we all mean the song from the same-named album. (But I also guess nobody here would say no to the whole album :D)
Yeah, more Haken for sure! They are becoming more and more the next dream theater. My vote for the next song you check out would either be Drowning In The Flood or Nocturnal Conspiracy. Cheers!
Great, thanks for the suggestion...I said in the video they were my favorite band atm of all these bands I am listening to...probably because like you said they are pretty close to DT in nature!
Vector was my intro to the group. Definitely came around to like ‘Falling Back to Earth’ from The Mountain on that same level. FBtE might be a hair more cohesive. But damn that “jungle drum” section and the following riffage just edges it out.
CaptainMorgan they’re not cheap (35£ or $46) but Ray Hearne (Haken’s drummer) sells spiral bound & autographed drum books / sheet music for this album Vector & the preceding album Affinity (which you heard The Architect from). It’s a real treat to follow along with.
10:48 I like the change around here they go into a 3/4 feel and then leads into a 5/4 bar and then I realized it's literally just 8/4 and that it's just subdivided differently
Od time signature riffs. That is what confuses you. In My listening world, that is what makes Haken unique. That they combines the out of standard counts, topping it with great countable rhytmic variety. From 9:17 i think they make a insane cool polyrythmic transaktion, to the calm bit.
Something shorter from their second album and definitely more "rocky" would definitely be "The Mind's Eye" and even "Insomnia" is some damnly amazing song on that style, more ballads songs from the 3rd album instead, "The Path", "Atlas Stone", Somebody". If you still wanna stay focused on prog though, Australian's Karnivool (Umbra or Asylum are their top songs in my opinion), Israelian's Distorted Harmony and German's "The Ocean" ("Silurian: Age Of Sea Scorpion" has a wonderful Ghost City Session video available, just like "Permian: The Great Dying")
@@captainmorgan1978 I haven't found another reaction to that song by Haken, so you could be the first to pop that 🍒! It's probably best just to do the remastered album version bc I can't find a great live video that does the sound quality justice. I love your videos so far and the honest, genuine feedback about each song. Keep up the good work!
Just found you and i have to suggest Crystallised from them next, very unique. I would like to reccomend "The Neal Morse Band" starting with "Fighting With Destiny" as a small start, the group has Mike Portnoy drummer from Dream Theater and they do lots of concept albums that should be listened from start to finish
Hey man thanks for the Sub! Unfortunately I already am pretty familiar with NMB, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, and all the other side projects MP has done... But Crystallized is definitely noted! Cheers! 😊
Liked this Haken song. By the way, I like that you come back a couple time to the same bands. This way you can have a better idea what they are about and if you really dig the band than if you were making an opinion only based on one song. I'm wondering apart from Dream Theater you may have listened to other prog bands or any other bands prior to starting this channel? I'm curious what these bands could be. Also, must remind you that this reaction to Haken was not a reaction to Blotted Science ;)
Haha nice little plug there... And nice little nudge with the compliment. Lol slick. Yea I mostly listened alot to Rush and Yes/Genesis in the progressive department. Tool, LoG, Metallica, Creed, Disturbed, and a few others but wouldn't label them Progressive, more heavy rock/Metal... I had heard of Devin, Opeth, Haken by name but never listened to any of their stuff.
I have listen couple of times to bands like Haken and Opeth. While I see their talent and that they are great, I have difficulty to explain why i'm not hooked to them. On the other side, there is bands where I was hooked from the first listen, like Leprous, Gojira, Symphony-X, Spiral Architect or Agalloch for example that I can listen multiple times and still get entertained. Is their circumstances, moods or other influences that contributes to be more open to a band and be hooked from start? I recognize that I may have some "filters" that contributes to not being hype at all for a band even with many tries. But, I'm not conscious of what all these filter are. I also question if I should be open and like Everything (like some people that I encounter that are able to do that). Would be interesting to have your take on this, maybe as a subject in a standalone video.
Endlessor Baggins I’m the opposite. Haken and dream theater were both love at first note for me. I’ve tried and tried the Leprous but I just cannot get into them. It’s mostly the vocals. I realize a lot of people like them specifically FOR the vocals but they’re just not palatable to me for whatever reason. Great talent just not my taste. Gojira is too heavy for my taste as well.
That is a great idea for a video and like you that's one of these reasons I am thankful for doing this channel because it is forcing me to realize my "filters" more and more. It's like Self Awareness counseling without having to worry about being wrong because it has nothing to do with people but a taste or preference. Lol and like you I don't know all my filters but I a definitely cementing ones I already knew like the "repetition bias" or slow tempo/fast tempo differences... Emotion/Stale... Etc best comment on my channelso far... Maybe a video on that will come after a more solidified take comes...
@@rustyshackelford4503 and that's why I think his question is gold because it really is discovering not just the what but the why.... Music is a window into our souls for sure.
@@captainmorgan1978 Thanks for the compliment on my comment. I saw the video in which you said you did councelling in the past and thought that you may have some psychology courses background. I often think of questions like the one I raised above. Most would be tempted to answer that it is only a matter of tastes. But, i'm wondering where our tastes come from. Why someone would like heavy growls while others will despise them? I think our filters are what shape our tastes and our filters are shaped by our life experience, society, education, etc. Also, our filters shape our perception. The more filters we have, the more closed we are... the more it is difficult to appreciate something. Anyway, i'm not psychologist but it was a short take on my idea on it. If you do a video on the subject, I will sure look at it. Continue your good work Captain... love your channel!
@@endlessorbaggins8223 Thanks man, and I totally agree. Another example of filters is with food. Sometimes before we even taste something for the first time we predispose our reaction to it making it less likely to actually discover and enjoy a new food. But then again, there are just SOME things no matter what filters we have or not we will just NOT like. The trick is finding a balance between the two extremes of being TOO closed and TOO open...if we had the answer to finding that balance we would be advanced ;) Cheers@!
This album is completely INSANE! Most underrated band ever 🤘🏼
Agreed... 😊
“Fuck Yes” sums up the song perfectly
Damn my neck hurts from all the headbanging
I am not a headbanger but I was definitely feeling it as well....those heavy riffs are soooooo goood!
