    p.s. ectobius rex quite literally means "cockroach king" in latin

    Without those elements you don't like, Haken wouldn't stand out as much. Then they would be just another band with not as strong identity. And having the contrast makes the impact of each part that much stronger. Personally I was not surprised by which parts you liked and which parts you didn't, but I was surprised you didn't pick out a single callback to Vector, like the part from Host in Ivory Tower, and the part from Puzzle Box in A glutton for punishment. Those are important, since Virus is kind of part 2 of Vector. As for Invasion, one of my personal favorites, I was a little more surprised. To me the vocals are just beautiful in that song, and I like the lyrics too (less Important though). My guess is that the song will grow on you, but of course I might be wrong. And the beauty of that is that it's ok!

    Messiah Complex is looking to be my favorite song of the year. I can't stop listening to it Morgan. It's taken hold of my life over the last few months. I think I might need help.
    In all seriousness, good to hear you dug at least 3/5's of MC. I definitely think it's possible Marigold and The Sect might grow on you if only in the context of the rest of the suite, but I can also see them not, so, just have to see on that. And I agree that Only Stars is beautiful.

      Marigold grew on me too. It is very very spastic with the time signature changes. That is one skill area I think Haken has over a good many prog acts out there is their ability to really mash up the time signatures and nail it so mechanically perfect (Nil by mouth was flawless live when I saw them). Marigold lays it on thick. Once you hear it 3-4 times you start to memorize the changes and licks and it no longer sounds nonsensical. Once you can tap it out while listening it just starts to make more sense. And being a drummer I think Morgan can easily get there. Can’t necessarily help the taste discrepancy in the CK callback moments in The Sect. It is what it is. Pretty much all of The Sect and the first half of Ectobius Rex are direct and literal echoes of CK. Lyrically and otherwise. Same melodic themes, same gentle giant style harmonies.
      I’m rambling now

    Did you recognice the Reprise of "Where i end you'll begin, when i fall, you will stand" lyric and melody at the end of Ivory Tower taken from Vectors 'Host'? It also comes up in 'Clear', the Vector Intro and 'Only Stars'. Or the "Parasite, leech upon the guilt (from all my wrongs)" in the second part referencing Puzzle Box? And yes, in the Final part the "oooh" melody was a callback to Prostethic! Btw I also love Carousel und The Strain (but also Invasion) more than Messiah Complex, although MC is also Killer!

    What will be interesting is to see what direction they go when crafting their next album. Because they’ve kind of gone all over the map on the progressive landscape. There are moments in Aquarius where they actually dabble in some doom metal style moments. They’ve definitely trended more toward technical/heavy/djent the past two albums. I wouldn’t be disappointed or surprised if they do more of the same in the future, but I expect them to change it up

      I really hope they change direction again. I do not dislike the djenty stuff, but it feels quite anonymous to me. I mean there's plenty of djent bands out there right now. What sets Haken apart (as Ole Morten Persen commented above) are things like their use of melody and the sonic textures.

In terms of other Haken when you choose to return to them, im not sure there is much left without some of the aspects you are not into. They have more good stuff with the Carni type sections sprinkled in. Crystalized is a great song with great melodic and heavy parts but also a few minutes if things that im not sure you would be about at the start. Also has a sick Acappella section.

    I had a pretty similar reaction to Messiah Complex as you, told my buddy after listening that it felt like it needed to just be smoothed out into one ~23 minute song. A couple more solos (guitar, bass, and keys all welcome) would've been a good tension relief too.
    Favorite on the album is easily Carousel (tho I'm still not a huge fan of the (lack of) transition out of the guitar solos), followed by The Strain (which grew a ton on me), Prosthetic, and Invasion (great modern prog-metal song, but not catchy to me). Parts of Messiah Complex are incredible, but to me none of its 5 parts feel like a true complete song and put together, again, it still is herky Jerry.
    Is the rest of The Mountain coming up soon for you? I was afraid you wouldn't care for Cockroach King, but I think you'll love the rest (including Falling Back to Earth and Somebody).
    Also, you should revisit Thank You Scientist. I think this is my favorite song from Haken. I love how tight and how many references they make to other songs and themes. The song has a lot of fan service though, especially with all the references and Hakenisms, and if that turns you off then I get it. I personally think the whole song fits together, but I don't know if that is just because I get the musical references and how they interplay or if I am just entranced.
    One aspect to Haken that's morphed through the years is that they've gotten more concise and to the point. It's kind of like poetry in that they are trying to say a lot of things in a few words, meaning that they aren't really padding their music out and trying to be efficient. Could be seen as good or bad. A lot of people with Vector came out because they thought the ideas could be more fully explored and some of the songs made longer, and while I like that as well, the approach they have been taking is to make their music more dense.

  • @Japie__
    @Japie__ 4 роки тому +1

    Dang, unfortunately couldn't be at the première again :).... Glad you reacted to this. My predictions on your taste on CK came a bit true after all :D. I still like songs like CK, Marigold and the Sect but I do also think they are not as cohesive, woulda been great if A Glutton for Punishment extended the buildup and tried more in it's heavy style. I grew up with Aquarius and the cheesyness on their old albums worked for me, because the songs were softer and it was often a baseline with a "karnivool" sound on top. This was like... extremely bold and random for me and it didn't work unfortunately even for my taste. Nevertheless this album is very enjoyable! :)
    I got a question......Maybe a lot to ask but.... been some weeks since you last reacted to Riverside and I'd love to hear you explore it more! :) I'm getting like this itchy feeling, haha. Would love it so much if you could do a start on the Second Life Syndrome album, (like first 2 songs). Since "virus" was released messiah complex grew to become my favorite haken song ever, with the sect being my favorite part 😂😂😂, thats just how it goes sometimes... that part when the blast beast comes in always leaves me wishing that haken just randomly drop a full on thrash metal album, i know thats very unlikely but since they completed the vector/virus saga, i think they will probably do something out of their confort zone next time, and i know i can expect anything from these maniacs.
