  • Thousands of tractors and trucks have converged on the German capital Berlin, as angry farmers protest against cuts in agricultural subsidies and increasing regulation.
Organizers expect about 10,000 people to participate in Monday's rally - which concludes a week of protest across Germany, including the blockade of motorway on-ramps. The demonstrations have tapped into a groundswell of dissatisfaction in German society.

They complain diesel is not longer subsidized and paying workers at least the minimum wage is hard. Fine but this is a problem of income. Meaning they not get enough to pay all this. While at the same time consumers complain about high food prices. So what happens between consumers and farmers? Well the food industry. Monopolization, centralization, dividends. They syphoning off the money for stockholders and CEOs.

    • @Teutathis
      @Teutathis 6 місяців тому +8

Well, you hit the nail on the head in your first sentence. Decreasing the tax on something that is heavily taxed is not to subsidize something, and farmers are heavily reliant on diesel.

    •  6 місяців тому +9

Correct. Also keep in mind that most of the cereals produced in Germany (2022 41 million tonnes) are consumed by livestock so this has a direct impact on meat price. Meat production is also subsidized and while prices go up for the consumer, the farmers do not see the benefits of what we pay with taxes. Only the 3-4 big meat producers in Germany see gains year after year that are directly influenced by taxes. I wish that we could directly consume meat only from local producers and in a more direct connection with the source, but that would mean a complete reeducation of consumer habits and the expectation of consuming less meat, day to day.

I cringe with urban people complaining about Farmers having high value equipment, believing food comes from the supermarket. Farming in the West isn't profitable without being partially subsided. Since production costs are high, Labor, equipment, harvesting is conditioned by weather conditions. Even so, it's important for a country to feed it self than being dependable on imports.

That's not really a fair representation, is it?
It is not the "expensive equipment". It is the owning large amount of valuable land, large amounts of valuable equipment, AND on top of that, having millions of euro in the bank.
Sure "not all farmers" are fabulously wealthy, but if you look at all the millionaires in the country, and you sort them by occupation, guess who the biggest group is? That's right, farmers.
And as for "why don't city folk start their own farm?"; well, maybe they don't have GOLDEN BUCKETS OF MONEY to buy all that land?

Do you even know how much the monthly payments for equipment cost ? Then the fuel, fertilizer, energy for storage, equipment maintenance, etc. ? Do you even know how much one lite of hydraulic oil costs ? Or one tire for a tractor ?
Two years of drought or two years of heavy rain in a row, and there go the "millions in the bank".

More than 60 years ago, Canada has put in place a system of supply control for three agricultural products: milk, eggs, and chicken!
This system of supply control was put in place to protect Canadian farmers against dumping from the United States!
Each farmer is an assign quota of production, and in return the farmer has a guaranty price for his product. The guaranty price is set at a level that ensures profitable and sustainable farm production. Important, there are absolutely no subsidies from the government.
The Canadians citizens have accepted to pay a little more for milk (and related by-products), for eggs and for chickens.
This system of supply control is working perfectly. During the last free-trade negotiations with Europe, Canada had to fight hard to maintain the system of supply control for milk, eggs and chickens!
Those quotas can be sold. For many farmers, selling their quotas financed their retirements!

Adapt or perish. Farmers are holding the government to ransom is hardly surprising. They have a disproportionate amount of power and it is costing everyday people the policies that governments have enacted to "protect" and win favour with farmers.
While the government subsidises farmers to keep food prices low this isn't free money. It's money that the tax payer coughs up or it's taken from schools, hospitals, police etc. As farmers are subsidised they have no incentive to to push for efficiency. Low yields....just throw an abundance of fertiliser at the problem then complain about the guy down the road who is doing it for cheaper so price caps get set in place. Look at Northern Ireland, farms pissed cheap fertiliser rather than using it sparingly causing run off and algae blooms in Lough Neigh. Politicians turn a blind eye as they don't want to loose the farm community vote.
Food prices wouldn't be high if they didn't block the grain coming from Ukraine. These protectionist policies for local farmers are the root cause of many problems we are seeing today.
For context this is something that needs to happen and I point to New Zealand and what they done back in the 70's. it's farm sectors is one of the strongest and best quality out there.
Yes the transition can be handled better and Farmers are some of the most talented and skilful people in our economy due to the many many skills running a farm forces them to learn. They are more than capable of adjust and adapting, especially if the government clearly lays out a transition plan and works with the farmers to help them adjust eg. changing planning laws, helping fund projects to reduce costs, settling laws in place that allow the farmer freedom to be stewards of the land as it's in their interest to work with nature. Make it easier for them to monitor and correct issues rather than micromanaging them into oblivion.

There is enough crop species and menure and waste to produce biobiesel and -gas for farms👍These are not solutions for bigger scale or substitute of electrification of transportation. Tractors are easily transformed to work with gas and biodiesel does not require modifications...

the current situation is completely unsustainable, and cutting it is definitely for the best. There have been a lot of reports how these incentives make pretty destructive practices the most profitable.
The only issue i see is how little time they've given the farmer to adapt. They've likely all planned for these subsidies to still be there in 2024, so they're most likely going to be forced to sell at significant loss until their current contracts expire. And thats going to ruin lives, which is never a good thing.

Subsidies is like a drug. Sooner or later you develop a dependence.
We have given agricultural subsidies to EU farmers for decades, and that has caused the land prices to rise. It has almost doubled over the last 20 years.
But now the bubble is bursting and farmers find that they have invested too much in a risky business model.
In the long run we need to replace EU subsidies with a mandatory self insurance, so farmers can save themselves.

At an average of £10,845 per acre of land value plus the value of their farm machinery, farmers have great wealth. To insist on public subsidy when for the last 30 years they have been asked to diversify (holiday homes etc...) only displays a stubborn refusal to adapt. Outside Germany in the UK king Charles still receives over £1 million per year in farm subsidies, the Duke of Westminster receives £300,000 in subsidies.
If we democratically insist on agricultural subsidy, let us target small and medium farmers.

The reality is that the government is subsidizing this protest through diesel. And that is symbolic for this profession, it is a saying from my childhood 70 years ago: farmers always complain, either they earn too little or the delivery time of the Mercedes is too long. They have a hard life, like a road worker, but in healthy air. Ordinary workers have a much more pleasant life, they sit in the car for hours listening to nice music with a cup of coffee in line with other motorists wondering who is blocking the streets again... farmers? truck drivers? or just environmental activists?
Oh well, who cares, it's always the ordinary citizens trying to do their job who pay for the damage.
They receive no subsidies to compensate for their lost income.
Are the farmers right? Most likely not, because then they would have found other ways to prove themselves right. Taking ordinary workers hostage is a solution for people who do not get their right and do not want to make any effort to achieve it in a decent way.
