It has been said many time before, but RevZilla made a smart choice bringing you and Ari onboard; loving the content and looking forward to a more in-depth review of this bike.
Love hearing Zack talk about the MT09's because the first video I saw with Zack and Ari was the R6/ZX6R vs FZ09/Z900 comparison and after that seeing his 'daily ride' to his old office basically travelling half the way on one wheel on the 2017 FZ09 I was instantly hooked so Zack and the FZ09 (MT09) got a special place for me. Loved the article! Covers a lot more of the mixed emotions of the bike which was interesting to see amidst the generally favourable feedback I've mostly seen
I've seen like 5, 6 reviews so far and only 1 has mentioned the qucikshfter and auto-blipper that come standard. These are amazing selling points in my opinion.
I read the article and appreciate Zack's honest review. I'm one of the ones that will appreciate the bike being less wheelie happy and will love its more canyon capable suspension and chassis. After a couple years of debate and searching a wide array of motorcycles and riding styles, I think the 2021 MT09SP will be the bike for me. After paying my dues on my 2006 Honda VTX1300C I feel I'm ready to step up to something much more lively and recapturing some of the excitement I had learning to ride on my dads CB300F just a few short years ago.
As someone who lives literally above a Yamaha dealership (I'm jumping on their head every day haha), I'm seeing new MT-09's every day. The design DEFINITELY grows on you, it's such a powerful and fierce bike. However, I liked the design languge of the headlights far better on the previous generation, but this one just looks... menacing, especially in the night!
Older gen resale has actually dropped because although you may not like the looks, its a more complete package for the price. Why would anyone spend 9500 on old gen for poor suspension, smaller displacement, and no electronics when they can spend the same and get all of those things in the new gen. (Ive owned 2 fz09s and glad i sold mine before they announced this new gen cause i made a profit and now i see people rushing to get rid of their old gens
Maybe its my age, but the first thing I want is a comfortable seat which most bikes don't have. I chose the 2018 MT-07 over the MT-09 mostly based on the MT-07's flat and more comfortable seat. There were cam chain tensioner issues on the older MT-09s and serious throttle response (snatchy) issues too.
The MT-09 I tested has roomier ergos than the MT-07 I own. The 2021 MT-09 has a hydraulic cam chain tensioner (part of coping with the steep cam lobe ramps) and the throttle response issues of fist-gen MT-09's has little to do with this new third-gen bike.
I think it’s a headlight that grows on you. When they first announced it was so bad it was a deal breaker for me. Then I saw it in person and it wasn’t as bad. Now it’s actually grown on me and I don’t dislike it at all
Great Deals on new/discontinued Duke 790’s as most people go with the 890 now. Eventhough the 890 is more expensive than the MT 09, I would still go with the Duke. Tough call as I love triples. With the Duke you do get the TFT, Stability control with IMU, and Brembo brakes. Both great bikes.
Duke is the better bike. But reliability and maintenance has to be taken into consideration. As of yet they have a shitty track record for that in comparison to the cp3 powerplant.
I feel like everyone can agree that on paper this bike has incredible performance, but no one can agree on the styling! It’s total marmite, I think it looks fantastic, but loads of you hate it 😂
As far as styling Im very neutral I can appreciate and I can see why people don’t like it but when you are on it what it looks like goes out the window.
How does it handle when turning - entry, mid, exit? Does it maintain the line with the throttle wide open? My 2015 FZ09 sucks big time in this department. It's the worst chassis I came to know and experience. The balance is not there. Love to see a shootout with KTM 890r and the new Ducati monster. Just braking and corner performance. Forget all the bling and electronics.
Yeah, I love this bike too much in SP form to wait for an updated XSR900 but really like the styling of the current one. They would be foolish not to update it very soon since the MT09 styling is so devisive.
Should i get the new 2021 mt 09 or a used 2018 with 600 miles for $6000? Its got fender eliminator with integrated blinkers in tailights, billet adjustable lever, and sliders all around
Got my 2021 mt09, it was my first triple. It is a great bike, but am trying to make it a bit more my style. Got a bad back though so I can't quite use the full on supersports anymore. Mostly miss chasing the revs and I am not sure what to think of this one's riding triangle. Have rode other naked bikes that felt closer to supersports but still comfy
I think this will finally steal most Triumph 765 sales. Triumph, with the a 660 and 1160 now, reallllly needs to bump the Street to 890 and focus on torque not peak power, and fix that high frequency handlebar vibe.
Busting to try one...was looking elsewhere to get the safety electronics...now it has it all...hope the ergos are not that different...coming from SuperMoto I loved the 2017+ plus position...
Zack, ain’t trying to jock another dude, but I am really glad you are with this new program and we still get to see your opinion on all of the awesome new scoots. Ty bro
How would you compare pre 21 MT-09 SP with standard 21 MT-09? The engine and comfort riding position is what attracts me to MT-09. I do a lot of relatively bumpy canyon riding, and the unstableness of the pre 21 MT-09 is a bit of a concern.
Great update It seems, But I’ll be passing over my money for the new KTM 890 Duke. If it’s any bit as good as the 790 , it’s an easy decision for me. Great time to be a motorcycle rider however ,with the options we now have. It’s a win -win for all of us that ride.
am i the only one who likes how it looks almost all comments i saw from different reviews are how it looks...... anyways i'm getting it next week, cant wait to ride it
I want one, had a 2018 and loved it. Put 10K miles on in 6 months, then hit a deer and totaled it. Anyway, I’d only buy one on sale. The sticker price would have to be around the out the door price.
Great updates. I'm finding the SP model has the total package as far as suspension and electronics go. The LED headlight I read is a pretty high tech unit with actual thought going into night-time illumination and light focus. It's just a shame the 'pod' into which it is mounted looks pretty cheap and nasty, lacking real finish aesthetically. The ergos seem to shove the rider up into the wind as much as possible. I tend to like a bit of forward lean to reduce arm-tug and neck fatigue, and it also helps with the helmet designs today which require some forward lean for aerodynamic flow.
Which is more fun in the twisties for a 200lb 6’0” dude: MT07 or MT09? I was pretty much sold in the MT07 but the 2021 updates for the MT09 seem like too good of a deal for only ~$1500 more.
IKR. Objectively, the bike is better in every metric except looks which lets face it, is something we all want to also look cool on while riding. I may still end up getting one a year or two down the line, especially if the aftermarket makes a dope headlight replacement.
Nice review bud. Seems like a fun ride. Missing character although not your typical crotch rocket with all the plastic pointy fairing stuff. I still want the Ducati scrambler.
Me too. I've seen a small one which looks good, but effectiveness is probably not good. I'm sure aftermarket will have some good options. Look for Puig, National Cycle, and others.
I think the LEDs have gone from being a Michael Bay-era Transformer to a more Neil Bloomkamp-Chappie style. I can't say I like either, but I prefer this one way more (like the directors).
The headlight assy itself is not too bad but the way its mounted makes the whole bike look weird. Maybe needs to be mounted lower....The new mt07 looks better.
The headlight could've been better, looks like what the old S1000R looks before the change. To make it look a bit better, it should have a clear cover just like the new S1000R.
I am so torn between the 2021 zx6r and mt09 possibly the mt07. Always dreamed of the supersport class since I was a kid, it just pure eye candy. But, the naked bikes offer torque instantly at lower speeds where 90% of the fun is at.
Waiting for a full review of the 2022 Yamaha XSR900 before I make u my mind on which one to buy. IMO I think the 'New" XSR 900 is a better looking bike than the "new" MT09. But the two of them do have differences which I am sure will reflect on their handling and so on. SO I patiently wait ... ;-)

Shouldnt it be one banana and 2 golf balls? 🤣
