slipper clutch is for preventing your engine from over revving when you drop it in a lower gear at high RPM and drop the clutch. The 2021+ MT09 has a quickshifter up and down so you can shift up and down without clutch regardless. The little arrows on your dash will change to green when the parameters are met to use the quickshifter.

The physical clutch unit itself has a ramp system that assists clamping the plates together under high torque (acceleration) and a ramp that assists spreading the plates apart under reverse torque (wheel driving the engine faster than the engine is turning). Trouble with the "assist" function is if you're into drag racing, it's near impossible to get a hard launch without looping the bike or bogging the engine.
The quickshifter is the electronic gizmo that interrupts ignition for a few milliseconds while the transmission is swapping a gear, also snaps throttle open downshifting to match RPM appropriately for seamless downshift (when throttle is completely closed).

    Hi, and greetings from Portugal.
I also have a 2021 MT09-SP (my first bike) and I like it a lot. I'm writing just to explain you how you can fix the blinkers when they go out of the socket (I had the same problem...). You simply pull the blinker out moving it up and down simultaneously until it fits again. This is basically a system to avoid damaging the blinkers if you hit something.
Since I'm at this, I will aso add that the quick-shifter (system used to automatically shift the gears up) is really amazing. Just one caveat: it does not work well in first gear, just 2nd gear and beyond. In addition, the engine must be revving at at least 2500-3000 rpm. Just give a touch upward in the pedal *keeping the throttle open, as is*. When you shift down you should do the opposite: give a touch down in the pedal *with the throttle fully closed*. In both cases, do no touch the clutch.
    Regards and ride safely.
    José

4:44 Don't focus on moving the filling gun away from the tank, instead focus on lifting the tip up so that it's vertical. This way, even if you do it extremely slow, droplets either go back into the nozzle or run down the metal pipe part and land on the rubber ring thingy. When it's vertical you can move it away safely.
And another free but unrelated tip:
This might sound cheap (pejorative) but there's a ton of fuel you paid for still in the hose. Draining it every time I fill my cheap (ameliorative) MT07 saves me about 20% gas money. Tested. Literally. With spreadsheet and everything.

The MT-09 and bikes in the 1 liter + sport category share a powerband that is essentially two tiered. Tier one you ride under 7000 rpm, around town, on highways, twisties, etc. in a casual manner. The under 7K tier easily gets the job done for every type of day to day riding, including more spirited riding as well. Tier two is the world above 7000 where most fear to go and where the naturally daring want to be all the time. This isn't a review on tier two and I'm glad it isn't. Many times people watch a review and it's some hooligan dragging knee and wheelying out of corners. I like that Doodle highlights the practical stuff over things like lean angle. I have to admit that I did get a change to wring out an MT-09 not too long ago and I can say, the quickshifter is awesome for doing those really nice 3-4 gear long wheelies. Plenty flickable for the twisties too :)

Replying to a two year old post, heh.
This is super interesting, I've never heard this before. I have a 2023 MT 09 SP and to give you an idea of what kind of rider I am, I have lift control on. To your RPM point, I definitely ride the majority of my time under 5k, and do it with a huge smile on my face. The screen starts blinking at me if I go above 6k-ish+, but it redlines at 11.5k. It never made sense to me why it starts giving a visual indicator at just over half of what it's capable of. But even in 6th gear, I rarely have to shift down to do a quick acceleration to pass, it just launches, every time, every gear, every RPM. I love it.

I really liked your review, the 09's are priced accordingly because they come with better components compared to the 07. I own a FZ07 and don't feel offended by hearing it feels cheap compared to bikes that cost 3- 4 thousand dollars more. That gap can be closed a considerable amount if some of those savings were reinvested in the suspension. I like them all myself.

Have to say that the refresh looks awesome, and I really wish the SP was around when I picked up the '09 because the suspension on the '17 leaves a lot to be desired. Hi, only found your channel recently and I must say it's always impressive to see someone overcome their challenges,(real or perceived) to achieve things beyond their expectations. I'd be interested to see how you rate the Triumph Scrambler XE especially after the ADV video you did, my inseam is a little bigger than yours but I've got the weight to squash the suspension!!

Primarily you ride your bike. But It has to look good too. Someone said "When you are walking away from you parked bike without turning and looking at it, you bought the wrong bike". Totally true. I can sit in front of my bike and look at it admiring the looks.

Great review as always. Not sure why so many aren't complaisant with having just the things that rider's really want to know, but all the silly details don't make the time you have anymore enjoyable. As Yamaha's aren't the least expensive bike's I figure it gives them assurances that they are getting the most out of their money. Not that this has ever been a budget sport ever. Just buying really good tires for any of my bikes cost more than steel belted radials for my Civic. That's all the way around. Have a great week Doodle. Happy New Year and safe travels.

I don't know about other makes these days, but every single Yamaha especially ones like the mto9 requires a reflash and some other mods to get the fueling right, and then it's really really easy to ride even with all that power. The issues people have with slow speed riding and things like that on these bikes is all about terrible fueling, not the fact that it has a lot of power.

The reason i didn't buy the MT-09 to be honest, was because the headlights were a joke for someone like me who does night riding on weekdays mostly leaving the office at late hours. I have a friend who has the MT-09 and I struggled riding it at night seeing clearly when I borrowed it for 2 days. The lights just aren't bright enough. I later went for Tracer 9 GT 2021, which I ended up placing additional auxiliary LED lights on it though. Nonetheless, the MT-09 is a fantastic bike. Unlike my Tracer, I noticed the throttle was way more smooth never snatchy when I rode it on A-mode.

Unless the 2023 is way better you're completely wrong about the headlight, with the high beam on you can literally see an 1/8 mile ahead.

I just test rode an MT-10SP. Possibly one of the most awesome and scary machines I've ever ridden. If it wasn't so tall I'd say go ride that, I'm 6'2 and 280lbs so no problem for me. In A mode and traction 3 or excuse me, WTF mode, it was how do I keep this front wheel on the deck. Solved that by riding in B mode or I'm a bit nicer mode but the front end still comes up, just not as high. Awesome and scary at the same time but the fear factor was eased by the handling provided by the Ohlins Electronic suspension all round.

Great video. Next up R7 then MT10 :-). honestly, I'm trying to stay down in the 600-700 cc range. I'm not too into parallel twins, but it seems like trying to find anything in that range is going to require lots of research. I did see your vid on the Honda 650r, and like you mentioned, one can take a naked to the track. It just doesn't look/feel the same. I bet it felt so much easier going back to lighter bikes after riding around on 900+ lb cruisers. Glad you're back to doing vids. Look forward to more sportbike, and standard bike reviews.

Great review as usual Doodle!!! As an owner of a 2019 XT250 and a 2020 R3 I gotta say that I love the products Yamaha puts out. The MT-09sp to me is the “unobtainium” of motorcycles 🥴😂. Would I LOVE to have one!? YES!! But for my particular area here in the mountains of western NC I doubt I’d get to use it to its full potential. Barely a straight road anywhere around here, thus my little bikes fit the bill perfectly. If I lived in Arizona or Nevada? Different story 😎😉

Tip: Pull the nozzle out of the tank and onto a doubled paper towel held in the free hand.
Snapping it away only sprays gasoline all over everything.

I notice that when you walk your bikes around you do it from the right-hand side. You look somewhat awkward doing it & as the kick stand is on the left, would you not be better walking them from the left......

Ducati elements in that design, many people think Ducati's are hideous looking, but they are functional.
I think many motorcycle manufacturers are moving in this Ducati direction.

I was so excited to see this, the MT-09 is at the top of my new bike list! A video comparing it to your street triple would be cool, I feel like they are competitors in a kind of niche "medium displacement naked triple" category.

I always wanted a MT-09. However, it's an imported bike (while other mainstream Yamaha's are built locally), so it is kinda pricey here, around US$21k?
might be 'not that expensive tho?' for some of you, but I did well amongst my friends and only make $6000 last year.
I enjoy videos about bikes in general, and I find your videos are great. thanks for the video!
