Hey Kaylee! A lot of plants are labeled toxic, but infact they just contain an irritant (calcium oxalate crystals) that cause irritation in the mouth and stomach which can cause drooling and vomiting....but isn't toxic. As a vet tech, anything that causes acute kidney or liver damage (like lilies!) I would absolutely stay away from...otherwise they usually just puke it up 😅
Yeah, calcium oxalate is not fun for either your kitties or your throat. It's apparently quite painful, so not a treat idea to keep if you have cats prone to eating your plants
That's good to know -- thankfully my cat doesn't care about most plants except the ponytail palm (but like look at it, it's literally asking to be a cat toy and is cat safe) and her plants (cat grass, catnip, which she keeps nicely trimmed)
🤯🤯They are adorable!!!! Yes, introduction video, please. The only plant that my cat was obsessed with was Monstera Adansonii, no idea why. 🙄Easy to bite maybe. I just repotted my large Fiddle Leaf Fig, leaves down to substrate and my Australian Shepherd is scared to death of it. 😂. Cat never cared. Glad that you had a nice holiday and much luck finding all the plants that you desire!😍💓😍💓 .
All of my cats have been trained from kittenhood that plants and counter-tops are off limits. It takes consistency in training them what's off limits, but it can be done. You're babies are fluffing adorable!
Same!!! Mine never jump on furniture besides the one spot on the sofa that they sleep on. I kept all my plants so they grew up used to them being around, just put the non safe on higher shelves. They also respond very well if you train them using the tones of your voice with treats and constancy for their respected reinforcement. When they do something good or bad, they need to be responded to within like 30 seconds, otherwise they loose their train of thought and don’t know why they are being fussed or praised. Cats have super short attention spans with zero aim to please so they have to be able to differentiate the two in order to be trained well. It’s also very beneficial for them not do learn bad habits or tendencies when you have two of them. When they have each other, they stay occupied more rather than messing with things: like knocking glasses over or scratching. Also, don’t waste your money on crappy, expensive toys… Empty boxes and colorful pipe cleaners make the best toys. Good luck. They really are the best. Xoxo
I love that you say they 100% won’t touch the palm. My cat 100% would 😂 anything grass like so ferns, spider plants etc get destroyed by her! After 10 years of having her I’ve just started branching into the toxic plants, but I’m keeping them up high until I can trust her. Cast iron plants are still one of my favourite. I didn’t realise there were different types though, would absolutely love some of the variations ❤
Yup came to say my cat loved chewing on a few of my plants, I can’t remember all which ones but I know one was a Purple Heart spiderwort. I never had any that were even grass-like and she still wouldn’t stay away from them!
Agreed! The only plant my cat ever ate was a Dracaena! Those grass like blades he couldn’t stay away from. Needless to say I don’t keep Dracaena-anymore😅
my cat ate a whole maiden fern plant in 30 seconds 🤣 I learned afterwards that they are said to be very tasty. Highly recommend aspidistra milky way, it's a tough beauty you might wanna add to your aspidistra list. I also recommend various types of rhipsalis (paradoxa is cool), lepismium bolivianum and some other jungle cacti, pachira, ceropegias, ctenanthe - all being pet friendly. And welcome in the cat owners club 😻
I'm pretty sure Hoya is considerated to be pet safe, and they aren't shaped in a way that would attract cats (they tend to like grass-like plants or scented leafy plants to lick).
Congrats on the kitties! 😻 They will play and eat palms and you will change your mind quick. Palms and cats don”t mix. I have 4 rescues and they leave most all my plants alone. I don’t worry about toxicity and everything has been fine. But NO palms!
I hade the exakt problem with palms especally Kentia palms. My cats att them in NO time. By the way they are so gorgeous and cute❤❤❤ Good luck with them.
Congratulations on a double dose of adorable! Happy you're getting 2! My biggest problem with my cats was them digging in the soil. Switching everything I could to pon helped tremendously. Still battling with a couple of my biggest pots. Stones or gravel on top helps some, but not completely. Enjoy every crazy minute with those two! ❤
Agreed! I’ve got a digger too. But I caught her napping wrapped around my rubber tree. It was adorable. I put pet safe plants blocking her when she was little. She’s taken a nom of a couple, but never got into it. We guess she bit something that tasted bad and redirected all her energy into digging.
So the kittens are adorable… obviously. The Cast iron plant that you can’t remember the name of it is probably Asahi, or snowcap. Snow cap has more color. Also they don’t get their color until older, and they also don’t like fertilizer. If you have enough shade outside for Aspidistra, they’re also Hardy in the UK. A variety that I love is Aspidistra ’Goldfeather’. I have been around long enough to remember Big Al. My favorite Calathea is an oddball: Calathea lutea- could be great as a large kitchen floor plant.
@@KayleeEllenOfficial Personally, I have not found this to be a problem - I always buy the "Tabby" grass seed. Please share your gorgeous new family members on this channel.
Those kittens are adorable, can’t wait to find out their names, love your videos and I do hope you take us to the Netherlands with you, I would so enjoy seeing it.!!!
My old cat loved anything that's on the shelves, but ignored floor standing plants (unless leaves were comfortably available while lying on top of something). Had his 2 own pots of greens - oats sprouts and some random chlorophytumv we had, he claimed it as his own. He just loved that one, nothing we could do. He ate it all, day by day until nothing was left, when new leaves grew - ate again. No trouble, I guess one more on totally pet-safe list. And also loved mom's fuzzy leafed violets - he sat on them, right in the middle of the pot over the plant. Old weirdo, miss him so much.
the maidenhair fern is so worth it imo! you just gotta keep it pretty wet and that’s it. if you underwater it will die back a bit, but it will keep growing like a beast, so you’ll just have to do some trimming. if you severely underwater it it will entirely die back, but it is very skilled at necromancy, and will come back. mine died twice in the beginning when i didn’t really understand how to care for it, but now it’s so big and beautiful.
Can’t go wrong with a triostar. They are gorgeous! I’ve divided mine into four and gifted to friends. Everyone should own one!! Easiest plant to care for…
I have 7 rescues, and my cats LOVE TO EAT MY PLANTS. I have had to put my Philos practically on the roof. I got a new Alocasia Stingray, and I came home to three of the five leaves chewed off and laying on the floor. I can't be mad, right? I left it down. Lesson learned. There was some drooling, and I found a puked-up leaf later that day. Your new babies are so cute.
The boys look so adorable, congratulations ! My Luna will eat anything that looks like grass, i can't have anything in her reach with thin long leaves. Round, thick leaves are completely ok, even on the floor. To aditionally discourage her munching on plants, i buy kitty grass seeds. I plant them in soil in a self watering pot and they will sprout in 1 or 2 weeks, after that they will last for about 1 month. When they are starting to get yellow, i prepare the next batch. She really loves them ! All the plants on the maybe pile seem like they could be ok (i have them all), especially if they are a bit out of reach like in a tall planter or on a stool. They are also not highly toxic, they would mostly burn a bit when biting them, Luna took one bite out of a Frydek and she never touched it again. As long as is a small amount ingested it should be ok.
Such an exciting addition for you!!!! My cats are demons when it comes to palms, they LOVE them, just a heads up 😂 they will eat it right down to a stump if permitted
hehe i was about to give that same heads up !😅 I had to put my two ponytail palm sooooo high on top of a wardrobe where kitten can't reach it... because she was just having a blast eating and wrestling the plants into submission🤣
Given enough light, you pretty much can't overwater Maidenhairs. You can leave them sitting in water, and they grow like mad. I think they get a bad wrap because they're quick to drop foliage, but if you keep at it with the watering, they will grow back from the rhizome. Anyone reading should look up Adiantum peruvianum, it's basically a Maidenhair with giant leaflets.
What I've found is that cats think moss poles are scratching posts, so anything with a pole has had to be put out of reach. Also, go for plastic cover pots to start with, as if they start chasing flies, plants go flying!! Cat grass is good, too, as mine have moved from chewing my plants to chewing this.
My cat loved shredding the leaves of plants when he was a kitten but he’s chilled out now and could care less. (He’s a ragdoll so also a chill cat). Congrats on your boys and thanks for this video. It’s so good to remember some of the plants I haven’t thought of for ages
i grow wheat grass(or they just call it cat grass) for my cat to chew. once my cat has wheat grass to chew, he does not bother my other plants any more. additionally, wheat grass helps his digestion and i hadnt had him vomitting furball for the longest time. the fur are all passed through his bowels
I ended up putting all my plants up out of reach b/c even the non-toxic made my cats throw up from general stomach upset; they didn't even eat that much! They never batted at the leaves though, the way some cats do. I wish they had instead of nibbling! And they completed ignored spider plants, which are supposedly a cat treat. Ah well. Your wee ones are so so cute! I hope you keep us updated on them!
Oh they're ADORABLE!! I'll throw out a warning for the palm, with my cats anything that has fronds or a grass like texture becomes an instant target whether or not it's safe so now I avoid them despite how much I love them. Keep in mind ceiling space as a possibility, a nice hanging pot is a good chance to keep something not quite as safe out of reach. Also keep an eye on your fish tank, if you have a simple glass lid they can get broken by a full grown cat jumping on top of it, but my cats love watching the fish so I try to make sure there's a good little resting spot next to my tank where they can watch safely. I'm so excited for you!!
Other of my two cats likes to try to eat all my begonias. It's not interested in any other of my plants. So I have moved my begonias to place he does not reach them. :) I also have shelves hanging from roof in front of my windows. It safes places and it's easier to change growing mediums for hanging plants compared to hanging baskets. Also keeps cats away from plants if that's a problem.
I always love a cat-friendly plant video! I have a few of your selections in my home and they’re survived my kitten wonderfully. I would absolutely love to find more cast iron plants here in Canada as well, I adore them. Can’t wait to see how the final plant styling looks and more kitten footage 😊
If you like maidenhair check the silver dollar fern also called Peru maidenhair. I swear I have some good plants in my collection that I'm really proud of but this fern will forever by my favorite plant of all time. It's the most beautiful thing you can imagine. And they are really not that hard to take care of if you give them good light and self watering pot. Don't use too chunky mix, just normal plant soil with some perlite or any other filler (or cactus soil) in self watering pot. They will thrive for you :) And they love the bacteria/fungi inoculants. You chose really cool plants, now I'm feeling nostalgia to my non-aroid times too!
Girl! It so wonderful seeing you go back to plants that started you on your plant journey ❤ I first found you through the video where I believe you had just gotten your calathea orbifolia back at your old old flat. Your new kittens are adorable, I will be tuning in to their introduction video when it comes.
Grow wheat grass for your kitties. It’s a good substitute for you pet safe plants. If I keep a small pot near cat safe plants my cat devours, she usually chooses the grass.
My two lower light and pet friendly trailing recommendations are pellionia repens or pulchra and cissus alata (danish/grape leaf ivy) - both live in my north windows and grow steadily. Congrats on those two cuties! A lot of cat owners would also suggest to give them their own bowls of cat grass so they keep out of the houseplants.
Same here! 😆 I’ve swapped some of my plants with “non toxic” ones since I adopted my cat. Fortunately, she doesn’t really bother about my plants in general, except those which are kind of dangling (like ferns and spider plants). I still keep my aroids and they’re untouched by her. But my variegated boston fern, spider plant, maranta, and iron cast have lots of holes from her chewing on them 😅
A Thai constellation sounds fantastic, I love the more even variegation and I think it would look great. On the topic of ferns, Bird's nest ferns are really cool, non-toxic to cats (according to Google), have many different varieties and are relatively easy to care for. I have a beauty which I bought Feb 2022 from a florist stand on the high street and she is thriving!
OMG I feel your struggle! And so stinkin’ exciting that you’ll soon be having kittens as part of your family! I am a long time cat lover (have 5 rescue cats currently, two of whom were abandoned next to a dumpster at 4 days old this past August, who were half the size of a palm with eyes and ears closed) and am only again starting to have plants, because of how much the prior babies loved to eat them. My cat Violet would immediately eat every African violet, they ate a spathiphyllum, (I was panicking, but all cats were okay), and would doze in the middle of my spider plants, so I took them all to my classroom. (My older cats generally leave the plants alone). I agree with Erin’s comments about plants with calcium oxalate crystals, that because they cause an intense burning in the mouth, from most of the forums I’ve read, as highly intelligent souls, if cats take a bite, they learn quickly and rarely take another. After going plant free for years, I’ve started finding ways to have my plants and cats coexist (I just got an Ikea plant cabinet, have installed gorgeous plant shelves on my walls faaar out of reach, and turned my bathroom into my new grow room, keeping door closed and thus, my plants and ratties out of reach of curious cats ;). And yes, please make as many cat videos as possible! I wish you luck on your cat plant journey! 🐈
Watch the palm!! My cats eat anything that's kinda grassy/strawy/fingery. Won't hurt them like but just get trashed! Musa and bigger leaf palms (footstool palm) are a bit better for my fur babies
Hi Kaylee! like your choices! I may suggest Peperomia Rama Verde. Non toxic and has those thick leaves and kinda gives off Anthurium vibes when you get a nice medium sized one. Super hardy too! The red stems are pretty and it’s just a nice lush, simple but beautiful plant. It would be lively in your kitchen!
I love snake plants! Whale Fin, Sayuri, bantel sensation, Sylvia, starfish, samurai, Fernwood, birds nest. But most of all they only need watered once a month!
Omg!!! Those boys are gorgeous! I have four and had them from very young , was paranoid about my collection . Moved everything that I thought would be toxic into my office . Of course they would sneak in , they have never in 2 years been interested in any of my 200 plus collection . I made sure they had enough other things to play with . Maybe I got lucky but they have never been interested in my huge plant collection
I’ve loved house plants for a while but you got me into maranta and I finally got a maranta for the collection, I think it’s lightly variegated but it is making me want a lemon lime
My favourite calathea at the moment is calathea crocata! I think it would go great with your house aesthetic as well. If you want something out of the box in the snake plant realm, try the starfish or cylindrica. They are great, although I found cylindrica is sold as leaves stuck in soil to look more exotic. It will look slightly different when it starts growing new plants.
my 17 year old cat started eating my big kentia. Didn’t cause him any harm but the plant was a big raggy. He’s lost interest now and the plant is fine too. Good luck with the gorgeous kittens!
I've had 8 cats and only one of them went for the plants, but man did she go for them hard!!! The only one she didn't nibble on was the kentia palm (although they liked to play in its dirt so had to put spikes in it)!!! And that was with providing them cat grass! But for most cats they couldn't care less, so I'd slowly introduce the plants in once the cats are past the kitten phase and see how things go.
What adorable kittens! I have two cats and for the most part they do leave my plants alone, with the exception of palms, so beware there! I had to keep mine, which was small, up on a shelf they couldn't get onto, otherwise they'd chew on the leaves all the time. For Sansevieria, you should check out the "Moonshine" variety, it's a lovely silvery green and could match your house's aesthetic quite nicely. Very excited to see you get back into calathea! Some of my favorites are Jungle Cat, Flamestar, and Fasciata (which is like a darker green version of the Orbifolia and I've found it very easy to grow). Musaica/Network is another one I really like too!
Such cute kittens! I have 2 cats. They basically don't touch the indoor plants if they have access to grass. Also they only one they were interested in was the draceana marginata. I sprayed that with bitter apple spray. Worked brilliantly and they do not touch the leaves!
The cars are ADORABLE!! I am a crazy cat lady, I currently have 7 cats. They are very good about leaving my plants alone, I keep 2 fairly big planters of wheat grass for my cats to chew on.
I'm not sure if they have it in the UK but I got a product called bitter green apple spray to get my cats to stop eating my plants. It's essentially a dog bite deterrent that is isopropic alcohol based with natural bitters. It has worked wonders and no damage to my plants at all
I’ve had a cat, her name was GiGi she passed away of old age. But she was the best. She never bothered my plants even those that are toxic to her. She would just rub against it to place her scent. I’ve had her since she was a kitten. I think if you train your cute kittens then they will learn and know to leave the plants alone.
I found the cast iron plant on the list hilarious as I really loved the idea of this plant when I started covering my room with plant but never got one. Then last year, I went to visit my sister in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (I am in the UK) and she had just bought a new house and needed someone with a green thumb. It took us hours to remove the invasive cast iron plants and roots from her garden and now cant stand the idea of cast iron plants.
Just to let everybody know I got a humongous philodendron pink princess from Lowe’s for 10 bucks and it’s got five plants in it and they all stand about a foot and a half tall. And I spoke with the vendor that had them and they said it’s going to be in very small batches. They only had five to bring to that Lowe’s and they come from Costa Farms.
My cat ignores all my plants with a few exceptions- if there is too much soil exposed he digs in the soil and my monstera he kept on batting it shredding the leaves so I passed it on to someone else:) I do grow oats as grass for him to chew on in a shallow bowl and he eats that!
I have 2 cats and have had them since kittens, i started the training right away with that the plants are no go by distracting and so on. And also giving them a "yes plant", popcorngrass, or chlorophytum comosum. Chlorophytum also works a little bit like catnip 😅
Aw congrats! I started collecting when I got my kitten and the only plant she's ever messed with is a palm. They love the leaves, but she also really likes to pot plants up with me and sniff/inspect the new ones. The second one I got destroyed all my plants as a kitten, but she's much better now. I think it was a jealousy thing because she rips leaves off when I give them more attention than her. She also has a habit of digging and using them as toilets. But honestly, I think if you raise them with the plants around they will love them. Can't wait to see your new babies!
Grats on the cats! Brith Shorthairs are cute. All orchids are edible and pet-safe, btw. There are variegated versions of Vanilla and Phlaenopsis. Otherwise: Hoyas.
I've had 3 cats and they all were different with plants. The second one was an absolute terror with plants. He was otherwise trainable, but I just couldn't make him stay away from plants. So, whatever cat owners tell you to expect, your experience may vary... Anyway, no Hoyas? They are pet safe! I also recommend the variegated Hibiscus!
Your kittens are beautiful. Are they British Shorthairs? If so, they probably won't mess with your plants. Mine could care less about my plants unless its blocking their shelf space. That said, it's smart to slowly introduce them until you get a feel for their personalities.
Omg, Kaylee you made my day going back to the not so rare plants. I started my plant collection with your videos and didn't go on watching because the plants you showed were beautiful but too expensive for me. You need to make a living I don't mind :) And now you show a snake plant. Love you for this and hope to see the kittens here.
Oh my goodness, so exciting that you’re getting kittens! You can try hanging plants higher than they can jump, too. Good luck with everything and I can’t wait to see videos with your cats!!
You could keep small more toxic plants in a green house cabinet. Admire through glass with supervised opening only. Cute kitties. By the way my cats ate my ferns and spider plant and something else I forget down to the dirt. Had to give them away. The plants. Not the cats. lol
Aww kitties 😍 they're adorable! I gave away a monstera when we first got our kitty (who's almost 13 now) but it turned out not to be necessary - she somehow knows to only nibble on the plants that aren't toxic. She doesn't even dig in the soil or anything, and I don't remember having to train her on that specifically. I have dieffenbachia and all sorts of toxic plants sitting on the floor, no problem. So it really depends on your cat(s) and their personality!
I have two cats and lot of plants including many toxic plants. The only plant they've touched which was when I was just getting into plants was a zz plant. Turns out whilst their labeled 'toxic' the worst they do is make them sick. My two where absolutely fine the zz looks crazy though 😏. They've not touched any plants since, so I've been really lucky with mine. Your fur babies are so cute, I'd love to hear more about them on this chanel.
I love you adorable kitty's!!! Please introduce us to you furbabies!!!! Love the plants you are choosing for your new home!!! And damn I so jealous of you stunning kitchen!!!! The light in there is amazing!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Have a great weekend!!!
I got cat grass to help discourage my cats from chewing on the plants in the beginning now they don’t really seem interested. The biggest problem we have is our newest addition likes to dig in the dirt 🤦🏻♀️ she’s just now a year old so hopefully she grows out of it lol
Blue star ferns are exceptional. They are called Phlebodium. One of my faves in my collection. I have a huge maranta collection on my coffee table. All varieties planted in a huge bowl shaped pot!
I put my strap leaf anthurium on top of my fish tank so the leaves hang down the sides of the tank. Looks awesome! You should totally do that. Fish tank is perfect for them with the humidity
So jealous of those skylights in the kitchen 🤭 you could get a tension rod/curtain pole situation going to hang plants under those sky lights I’ve seen that done before it looks lush, proper jungle vibes 🪴 and out of the reach of the little paws 🐾
Anything that looks like grass is for sure gone in my house (palms, dracaena, spiders) everything else has been fine. My cat eats grass outside so I can see the connection but like sharp pointy edges seem to attract cats🤷🏼♂️
My mums dog attached my alocasia flower, within a minute she regretted the decision and was suffering severe irritation in her gums, and within 15 minutes, it had passed and she never did it again 😅
I can really recommend alocasia regal shield. They grow huge and the leaves are like satin. Undersides are beautiful. Cheap and easy to source. Got mine in Lidl for 9.99! It’s a winner….
Not for high light, but I'd put in a good word for a Fittonia on a quiet windowsill. I just got two one white veined, one pink, so cute. And an African violet for a splash of colour, though also for a more shady spot.
Lovely. My puppy chews on my snake plants, and I know they're also safe for humans because they're used in homoeopathic medicine. They might be safe for cats too
If you dont want your cat to chew on your plant, then you can plant cat grass! I forgot what they called this grass, but they are a grass that are safe for cats to chew on so they can gag to clear their throat from their own fur! It really help me because sometimes cats do something we never imagine they would ever do..😅
Where I live maidenhair ferns GROW OUT OF CONCRETE WALLS, but I've bought them countless times because i loove them and every time after a couple weeks they die on me!!!!!
Kittens and plants... just add books and your speaking my love language 😍 Calathea are by far my favorite plants! If you can get your hands on a small (goeppertia) musaica they are so cute, unique and so easy to care for. Super cute on the window sill! If you do hanging plants having any kind of pothos is a must!
Oof well I mean... I do have a bookcase full of books! I need to read more to be honest. I'd like to occasionally talk about books on my second channel when it's up and running again.
Adorable! I have 2 British Shorthairs also. They chewed a lot when they were teething but largely leave my plants alone now. Don’t forget Hoyas!!!! Also pet safe.
Two sweet little cotton balls! 😊I really like that you get two at a time! I recommend heavier outer pots and a cover of gravel if not planted in pon anyways. My cats like to stand on den pots for a better view (especially on the windowsills. Covering the dirt helped me against curious digging!
Your cats will learn what is theirs and what is not quickly...mine loves cat grass and I have a sacrificial spider plant which only occasionally gets a nibble...she rest she leaves alone
The Calathea Orbifolia is totally underrated! I own one and it's such an EASY plant! I give mine rain water and it loves it. I'll have to tag you in a pic!
Speaking of _Adiantum_ - I love them. But it’s like you said; not something I’m gonna be putting a ton of money into. I recently rescued a few maidenhair ferns, free of charge, from a local store. They were getting neglected. Meanwhile, the workers are drowning the cacti and succulents, while the ferns and aroids are in full sun and bone dry. Go figure. They were kept in southern exposure, in full hot morning & noontime sun, getting fried, dehydrated but still alive. It’s satisfying bringing ferns back to life for me! I think I kinda have a knack for reviving them, actually. Just cut the older leaves back and soak for a day! I find they love to be in Pon, either DIY or Lechuza, whatever. Seems to work better for them than LECA, with the finer roots and finer substrate. Keep in the shade or bright indirect light.
Ironically, I’m discovering that maidenhair ferns tend to respond very strongly to more light… but not overtly so, just given a quick blast of morning sun, and then bright, indirect light or bright shade for the remainder of the day. I mean, NO more than an hour or two of morning sun. Any later and they likely burn. They seem to thrive more than the ones I put in shade or inside.
Yes! I love this list and a lot of these plants I have and cherish- at the moment I have a triostar, maidenhair, ZZ, monstera and a number of calathea. It's a nice change to focus on non-aroids, I feel like we may have passed peak aroid. (Don't get me wrong they are popular for good reason and I like them a lot - they got me into indoor plants for sure). On this list the ones I'd love to get are a philodendron gloriosum and a white sanseveria like 'Bantel's sensation', maybe a cast iron plant.
My cats are only interested in thin grass-like leafs, so luckily i don't have to limit my collection to non-toxics 😊 grass-likes that are toxic (like dracaena) i just put out of reach and i just made my peace with them chewing on the Cyperus every once in a while 😂
Loveee seeing the kitties here!! Calathea white fusion is a stunner for me, cant imagine how glorious it’ll look in your care. Loved the vid as usual 💯
white fusion calathea remains one of my all time faves, trickier than some of the others but when it grows it's *gorgeous* and i loooove it. unfortunately, they seem to be spider mite magnets turned up to 11, way more than any of my other calatheas.
Hey Kaylee! A lot of plants are labeled toxic, but infact they just contain an irritant (calcium oxalate crystals) that cause irritation in the mouth and stomach which can cause drooling and vomiting....but isn't toxic. As a vet tech, anything that causes acute kidney or liver damage (like lilies!) I would absolutely stay away from...otherwise they usually just puke it up 😅
Thank you for this clarification. When we research plants a lot of them are labeled as "toxic" but there are different levels to that.
Yeah, calcium oxalate is not fun for either your kitties or your throat. It's apparently quite painful, so not a treat idea to keep if you have cats prone to eating your plants
@@jv_likes_plants of course. This also applies to dogs, birds, or young children. Fortunately, my pets are not interested in plants
That's good to know -- thankfully my cat doesn't care about most plants except the ponytail palm (but like look at it, it's literally asking to be a cat toy and is cat safe) and her plants (cat grass, catnip, which she keeps nicely trimmed)
Yay kittens!!
Glad that you had a nice holiday and much luck finding all the plants that you desire!😍💓😍💓
.
Xoxo
Same with us our cats no better they don't mess with my plants and the dogs don't touch them either
My cat never learns she goes through stages lol but I find putting stones around the base works
h❤m 😢
Us❤pmj
I love that you say they 100% won’t touch the palm. My cat 100% would 😂 anything grass like so ferns, spider plants etc get destroyed by her! After 10 years of having her I’ve just started branching into the toxic plants, but I’m keeping them up high until I can trust her.
Cast iron plants are still one of my favourite. I didn’t realise there were different types though, would absolutely love some of the variations ❤
same here 🤣
Yup came to say my cat loved chewing on a few of my plants, I can’t remember all which ones but I know one was a Purple Heart spiderwort. I never had any that were even grass-like and she still wouldn’t stay away from them!
Yep, my palm is one of the few plants that have gotten nibbled by my cats.
Agreed! The only plant my cat ever ate was a Dracaena! Those grass like blades he couldn’t stay away from. Needless to say I don’t keep Dracaena-anymore😅
Cats LOVE palms lol
my cat ate a whole maiden fern plant in 30 seconds 🤣 I learned afterwards that they are said to be very tasty.
Less than a min in and freaking out! Look at those boys! They are SO precious 🥹
that triangle tails just make me squeak :) I love cats so much :)))
I cannot take how utterly adorably cute those precious kitten are!!! 😩❤️
I find that a couple of seed trays planted with Cat Grass is a great distraction & helps keep the houseplant munching down.
I was thinking of doing that but then I was worried they would be like "ooh yes we can chew allllll the plants" 🤣
Easiest plant to care for…
I love the look of the triostar and would like to get one. Could you give me some care tips, please? Thanks!
@@tishducrot1979 oh my goodness I can't even keep a ponytail palm here, it was just a trunk 3/4 of the time 😅 kinda defeats the purpose lol!!
How about some flashy large leaf hoyas, they are pet safe. Love australis trailing in a hanging basket and the blooms make the house smell good.
Hi Kaylee,
My cat has not touched any of my plants since he was a kitten. He did have a good shit in my rubber tree a few times but he grew out of it.
Love the plants choices for the house! And those kittens!! OMG!! Adorable!!
Girl! It so wonderful seeing you go back to plants that started you on your plant journey ❤
I first found you through the video where I believe you had just gotten your calathea orbifolia back at your old old flat.
Your kitchen is similar to my niece's, the light is so good that even her ZZ just flowered twice!
I honestly LOVE prayer plants. Once you get them figured out, they really do grow so fast!
You didn't mention the mobility of the Stromanthe Triostar - moves like a prayer plant. It is one of my favourite plants too.
Maybe make a nice (small) terrarium with Jewel orchids and Labisia's or so. They also don't need a huge amount of light and are non-toxic.
I don’t have a calathea suggestion. But a big Bantel Sensation Sansiviera would look great in a white and grey home. I also love the black coral.
So jealous of those skylights in the kitchen 🤭 you could get a tension rod/curtain pole situation going to hang plants under those sky lights I’ve seen that done before it looks lush, proper jungle vibes 🪴 and out of the reach of the little paws 🐾
my kitten absolutely destroyed my palm, way more than any other plant
hoyas are non toxic and love light!!! kittens are adorable 🤩
I would get a monstera standleyana. Think it would be a great addition…so pleased I got mine…
They might be safe for cats too
Favourite calathea is warscewiczii - looks beautiful and dramatic but feels like velvet too
If you dont want your cat to chew on your plant, then you can plant cat grass!
Kittens and plants... just add books and your speaking my love language 😍
Calathea are by far my favorite plants!
I would love to see a Netherlands plant shopping video. I’m here for all the content not just plant related 🥰 can’t wait to see the little guys soon.
I have a milky way aspidistra (cast iron plant), and I just love it. It's green, with tiny white spots.
My cats are only interested in thin grass-like leafs, so luckily i don't have to limit my collection to non-toxics 😊 grass-likes that are toxic (like dracaena) i just put out of reach and i just made my peace with them chewing on the Cyperus every once in a while 😂
Loving the pics from the house! The light in your kitchen is fantabulous!! 🤩❤️
I enjoyed music while watering my plants. Thanks for the video. Love your plants. The Florida Ghost I bought from your shop is huge now . 😊
This video brought me joy to watch. Back to basics! Bring in the kitties 🐱🐱
So excited for the kitties. Can't wait to see them. I also, love your choices of plants. I would love to see the kittens once you get them. ❤❤❤
