    Sorry to say but pretty sure its a fake the real one has the logo on the center of the box

    • @HarleyWood23
      @HarleyWood23  5 років тому +7

      Charm
      No it’s not. It was purchased from a very reputable retailer. The fakes generally have at least a few of the following features...
      Thinner box
      No cardboard insert inside the box
      silver buttons on the sheath
      Stitching on retention snap isn’t black
      darker webbing and all same color
      looser knit on the webbing
      button snaps left over right
      deeper drop point
      sharpened edge comes nearly all the way to hilt and the knife is usually dull
      This has none of those. It’s possible Gerber has updated the packaging in the years since I bought this.

    I was fishing for my first Gerber folder to get and stumbled onto this fixed blade. As I prefer all sand/tan colored gear it ended the folder search.
    On my rucksack strap I have the Ontario Blackbird and on the other I will squeeze this one over my hydration tube. Good review/Excellent camera lighting. subbed.

    Nice first non-shot/promotional look. Thanks! Are you a soldier? Do you feel the scope is more a soldiers knife than a bushwalker/outdoors knife?

    • @HarleyWood23
      @HarleyWood23  9 років тому

      I'm not a soldier, so i'm giving you my opinion based on limited experience. But I don't feel this is well-suited for bushcrafting. It's missing the jimping for detailed work. It also has a bevelled swedge, which wouldn't be ideal for batoning wood.

    Hi Harley, Don't listen to some of the youtube knife experts. Most of them use their
    knives just to clean their finger nails.
    I have used a Gerber Prodigy 440HC every day under the worst possible conditions
    and the blade held up as well as my friends $350 knife.
    Enjoy your Strongarm knife, it will serve you well and will last you a long time.

    I'm no "Gerber fan boy" by any means, but I really like Gerber fixed blade knives. They're reasonably priced, and pretty good quality. And if I totally destroy one, replacing it isn't an issue and it doesn't break the bank. I'm no blade slinger, and I'm not fixated on knife porn, but there's nothing wrong with a Gerber knife.

    I was a little bit skeptical when I found out on blade ops that the knife was around $57 even though the list price is about $91 but after seeing your review and making sure the blade that I would get is real I'm going to pick one up!!! Thanks man great review!

    I have Busse Kin and Fallkniven and ESEE and Benchmades and this is the best $50 I have ever spent on anything. It’s a really really really nice knife at any price. I laughed at Gerber since Fiskars took them over, they are not what they were in the 80s but they seem to have redeemed themselves.

    Here from the future...its still a great knife! The knife is made in different places, or time, or parts of it are. Buy from a known seller, like Knife Center of the Internet, Academy, etc. Mine is a bit different but it came in a plastic clamshell. It was from Academy so I trust it.

    When I first got into my knife addiction, I didn't know much about knives and I thought Gerber was a top of the line knife maker, I still don't know much about knives but I'm learning and finally got me a beauty that is awesome for what I do with a knife, I luv the bush, clearing a camp site, building a shelter, processing wood for fire etc. It took me a few years of research and and experimenting with different knives, I learned about the 52100 Ballbearing Steel at a now defunct website called KnifeTest, yup Mr. Noss's site anyhow it's still one of my favorite steel, and I have a recent complete series of Swamp Rat Knives, I had them modify a Rodent 6 for me I had it thinned and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods the Ratmandu was always a fav of mine but now I have a bigger version and the fact where the top gaurd use to be it was done so well that it allows my hand to hold the knife and chop with so much power for a 6" blade its a excellent chopper as well after I had it thinned It makes some good curl's too, but anyhow back to my Gerber. Years ago I ordered a Gerber Silver Trident, to be kewl I bought it sterile no markings like country origin, although I'm not into Tactical Knives today I realize it's a good quality steel it's made of CM 154 and I also notice that it's been going up in value over the years, I guess I got lucky, I don't buy too many of the Gerber Knives, but I have a very lite pocket knife I carry everyday it's smooth as silk and hold's a great edge, but my pride and joy are my Gerber Freeman Hunter and the Caping Knife both in S30V with Stag Handles and to me their a set, I bought them seperate at close out prices but to be honest they are excellent knives atleast the ones I bought they hold great edge and are very light. What I meant my pride and joy is their my Gerber pride and joy, I have some other knives that I feel are much better but for the price I bought them and they all have gone up in value, even the guys that are willing to pay double the price I bought them for. Also my vintage Gerber Multi Tools alot say their not good, but in my case and the use of them I think their great, I just wish they had a saw and awl, but the knife is slender and small enough that it can be used as an awl in the emergency, I know I've done it, anyhow that Gerber of yours sparked an interest, it reminds me a a smaller LMF which alot of guy's luv, I just might get one.

    I have it, also the lmf2 I still like more the lmf2 but is just my taste. I would like to see the lmf2 without serrations. Both are a pain in the ass sharpening looking a razor sharp, but with time an patience you can do it.

    I will be getting mine tomorrow. Im excited to try it out. I plan on using it for edc. Be good at utility and tactical uses. Im impressed, Gerber finally gave us something the blade community has asked for years. Be nice to see a knife similar in design but longer blade, 5-7 inch would be nice. I'll support American made Gerber products hell yeah. Just not the Chinease products.

    All of the metal alloy "experts" here need to calm down. No one is arguing that 420HC is the best steel for a knife. I have used a Gerber Prodigy for years now while camping and hiking and it has not failed me to this day. I have put the knife through all of the durability and abuse tests I can think of over three years and I can't really say anything bad about it. I paid $35 USD for it.
    Please show me another knife you can buy for $35 that will handle that kind of abuse and not show any signs of breaking down. 420HC is good enough for the majority of people and only knife snobs would put their noses up at it. But I have a feeling that the majority of people talking shit on it here have never used a knife in real-life situations and are simply trolls.
    Good review on the Strongarm. If my Prodigy ever dies, I'll make sure to pick one of these up in fine edge (my one point of contention with the Prodigy).

      +HarleyWood23 They will never quiet regardless of proof and especially when it's a Gerber, the last couple months I've purchased the Schrade Schf42,51&52 . People hate on Schrade cause the 1095 is china made but I will tell ya the schf42 is one of the best knives I've ever carved with its an amazing design, although it is 1095 from Taiwan so maybe it's "Special";). Anyways I am so freaking tierd of the Gerber hate bandwagon and the anti 420hc snobs I've now pledged to buy the LMF2, Strongarm or Prodigy this month.

    • @HarleyWood23
      @HarleyWood23  8 років тому

      +Michele Trekkning I wouldn't call it an "excellent" knife. I think for another $50-$100 there are better options. But if your budget only allowed you $70, I can't think of a better option. Several other UA-camrs have done torture tests on this knife. In fact, one group passed the same knife around through a "gauntlet" of challenges. It surprised every one of them. Here's a few links...

    Do all of use interested in the actual performance of this knife and take it out and use it! Shealths can be modified and replaced so Im not to concerned about that. What Im interested in is the performance of the steel. If it is prone to edge chipping, rolling over, or simply cant hold a edge for a realistic amount of time, its no good.

    I like fixed blades better. I would never go for or rely on a folding blade. Now having said that- I would go for a basic knife from Gerber, or M&P, or any other store/internet bought knife. Not trying to be a snob but I have found that custom made knives in my opinion or much better quality and much better customer service from individuals as opposed to a company made knife. Plus, they make the knife to your specifications and needs and wants.

    How about instead of sitting in your mom's basement on your lil computer bashing a product you go actually test it for yourself. Instead You'd rather just google what the best steel is and buy knives that'll never see more use than pretending your slaying an imaginary Dragon that's invaded your mom's basement and opening packs of Cheetos.

    While I understand that the Strongarm can be used as a tactical weapon, it's really a utility knife. Ya know feathering wood, chopping stuff -- even cutting steak. When was the last time you grabbed a knife to save your life?
    In my opinion, all of these reviews place much too much emphasis on these knives as weapons. At least for an urban environment, this emphasis is overblown...

    Everyone says you get what you pay for, but heres the problem; Shit is overpriced! Everyone hates on 420HC, but I own a Strongarm and a Prodigy and they are both awesome knives that hold a good edge, are tough dependable blades that have never failed.Now Gerber Chinese steel knives are a totally diffrent monster, but the Gerber knives I own are made in Portland Oregon, and whatever Gerber is doing to their 420HC is working, and would give Buck a run for their money.I personally own everything from ESEES to Beckers, to Ontario Blackbirds and CRKTs as well, and my Prodigy and Strongarm work just as well.

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica 9 років тому

      +Survival Solutions I bought two (2) Gerber Strongarms like the one in the above video and found it an average knife. Then I sold them both on eBay. There really is not anything outstanding about it. The plastic sheath is tight on the knife making it slightly risky to pull out due to the force needed and the sudden release. For what you get an Ontario SP Series knife with 5160 steel or even the Mora Bushcraft Black or Orange are better economic options for bushcraft or survival in my view.
      *Note:*
      The Gerber Strongarm is made in the USA although *the Gerber Company is owned by Fiskars Inc. of Finland.* So This knife is an international product like most things. If the Strong-arm was owned & made totally in the USA it would cost much more.

      sweetcostarica I guess everyone likes what they like. I own a Mora Bushcraft Black Survival and stashed it in my BOB Bag, and I'm a fan of Ontario Knives as well, in fact I bought that Blackbird SK-5 and love that thing.Gerbers are a great beater knife though and its inexpensive. If I break it i'll just send it back for another.

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica 9 років тому

      +Survival Solutions Great beater knives? Yes, Gerber knives are and most Gerber/Fiskars products too (price vs performance). Plus the Gerber/Fiskars Finnish warranty is incredible with a free replacement, no questions asked.
      Up here in Alaska I have talked to hunters to hikers and the knives for serious use here are Moras (sea & land) & 4 inch knives like the Ontario Air Force Survival knife. Nothing exotic or large since the ax is king in the cold for large fires. Like the Scandinavians we don't chop or split wood with our knives like UA-camrs for the most part.
      *Note:* In my BOB Bag is a small Mora Basic 546 and an 18 inch Tramontina machete for two legged predators and light chopping.

    • @bluegrasssurvival9423
      @bluegrasssurvival9423 9 років тому

      sweetcostarica Yeah, what I ment by "beater knives" is that if I have something thats gonna be hard on a knife, I'm grabbing my Strongarm since its cheaper then my other blades.Alot of the youtubers that baton with their blades are just showing how tough it is. People like yourself that live in a naturally harsh and tough enviorment like Alaska have to pack the serious stuff due to cold weather and alot of wilderness. I've been trying to get my hands on a Survive GSO 5.1, now thats a serious blade there but hard to get and expensive.
      P.S Two legged predators huh? Alot of that in Alaska?

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica 9 років тому

      Survival Solutions
      *Regarding the Survive GSO 5.1*
      The GSO 4.1 reminds me of the Ontario Black Bird SK-5 Knife in 154 CM. The GSO 5.1 is a bigger, more capable knife for sure.
      *Regarding two legged predators*
      I pepper sprayed one of two of those predators last week. He cried like a baby. So in the woods you need something for them & other animals definitely.

    Yeah the general rule is that you get what you pay for. If you think a blade has to break $100 to be satisfactory, you need to rethink the difference between "tactical" and "functional"

    "the oncoming storm" shut off her reply because she cant take criticism. i dont know shit about steels and which ones are better. all i know is the 420 and 12c27 from gerber how they heat treat and serrations are very good.
    guys who sit around discussing steels are just that, sitting around. go out and play with your knives, thats the only way you'll know for sure.
    and one more thing, anyone who has a video of actually breaking a prodigy or strongarm, please post it because after years of lmf2 and prodigy, i have yet to break mine.

      For $50 that's not too bad. Budget steel for a budget price. Made in the USA for that price is surprising, especially for Gerber. Reminds me of the Gerber LMF II but that is not full tang is that's why I didn't pick it over the BK17 I bought. The Gerber Prodigy is full tang so that's an option for anyone looking.

      Like your video, but seriously enough with the Gerber this and Gerber that. I've carried a Gerber blade for about 25 years and that's all I will carry. Gerber makes a quality product at a reasonable price. Only an idiot would spend $300 on a knife, you probably own a YETI cooler also. I don't know how you get your money but I work for mine and $40-$70 for a fixed blade knife is right where it should be.
