Gerber Strongarm Fixed Blade: Survival, Camping, General Use Knife

- The Gerber Strongarm (sometimes people write it Gerber Strong Arm) got a lot of attention at Shot Show 2015. It looks to me like a long-lost brother to the Gerber LMF II, but in a little bit sleeker of a format and without serrations (many people liked that about it). Made of 420HC steel and coming with a sheath system that offers you at least 3 different ways to carry it, this knife is a good general use knife for survival, camping, day hiking, and more. Check it out.

Definitely the best survival knife with multi-usage
What I like about the Strongarm is that it's a USA made knife. There's just something about the romance and nostalgic history of a knife and how it's interwoven into the fabric of our culture that tells me to use a USA made knife.
Glad to meet you Mr president
I know 5 years late, but great context thanks for posting.
I just ordered this very knife today. I wanted something to put in the scout position under my t shirt without freaking anyone out. It will likely never see a piece of wood or much use at all as I intended it to be a self defense tool, things are starting to get wild out there. Good video, thanks Mike
+James Ritchie you can defend your self with a knife. You just need a good lawyer and clean record.
If you were ever stopped by a police officer and you told him/her that you were carrying it for self defense, you'd be tossed in jail. It's illegal to carry a knife with the intention of hurting someone, which is exactly the purpose of a self defense knife.
@@SteveSmith-sd5hq no one would be so stupid as to tell a policeman he's carrying a knife for self defence. But isn't defending yourself a basic fundamental human right?
Great video. Thanks for showing the practical use of the sheath.
Thanks for checking out the video
The clip on mine is very secure as well. Nice review, thanks for posting. I like my Strongarm very much.
I was never a big fan of Gerber knives and really wasn't a big fan of 420hc steel.but I got a Gerber strongarm and was so impressed with it. I had a cold steel that the tip broke off of it but using the Gerber strongarm it held up using it the same way. My kabar is my number 1 go to knife but my Gerber strongarm and bushcraft black mora are my back up knives. The 420 HTC has surprised me on holding up and it's much easier to put a edge on.
My cold steel was the sk5 that the tip broke off.
420hc is one of the toughest stainless steels

Skill is all
I keep searching up best knives for survival, camping and hiking stuff like that I keep seeing the gerber StrongArm good price and quality good review
Excellent video and a great review. Scott
Thank you for the great review. Your insights are enlightening, and having said that, I'll give this knife a shot. For its price, it's a steal, and we can't really ask for more than having a cutting tool that won't break on us on the first day, whether bushcrafting or fighting for our lives. keep it up, i'm a new subscriber.
Personally I think 420HC is a great 'heavy use' steel (ie: good for blades you will be using roughly) as it keeps the price low and is unlikely to chip due to its lower hardness. That being said, if they did this in s30v it would sell squillions
+CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Ha - love that number! And I think I agree too.
amen
Honey I know what I want for Christmas this year !!!
I just minutes ago ordered this knife after watching the gauntlet reviews and many others,, my use will be camping, fishing, utility,, I ordered the coyote brown because it doesn't have that scary black tactical look that makes some people freakout a bit, thanks for your perspective, love your channel and respect your opinion.
Thanks for the video for the test I have been thinking about buying one and this has help me think hard about getting one
Bow hunter 1350 glad I could help.
This is my go to knife. I have modified the sheath by just using 1 pull the dot holster style loop in the 2nd grommet hole. The loop wraps around the sheath which allows for a front scout/horizontal carry. I carry it on my left side.
I have 3 of these knives 1 for my get home bag, 1 in my large preparedness kit at home, and 1 in my hunting/camping bag. My get home bag and prepareness knives are set up the same way with the pull the dot loop and are the black fine edge versions. My hunting/camping knife version is the tan version (also fine edge) and is up with the supplied drop style belt attachment. And I have added some bright paracord through the lanyard loop for visablilty purposes.
Awesome fire building skills bro! Love the vid.
+Joe Pashie Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your kind words.
i have 3 of those and happy with it
I bought this knife love it
Quick tip, you can lock the little "connector shim whatever thinger" plastic bit that connects to molle and the horizontal belt bit by passing a few inches of paracord through the loop in the sheath and the slot in the connector shim doodad.
I have the all black strongarm and I love mine
Great review! I was looking at a Prodigy, but I think i'll go with the Strongarm instead.
Nice review!! If you are worried about the molle retention clip falling out you can run the knife upside down so the retention clip is at the top.
Really good / informational video!
Thanks - I appreciate that Charles.
when you use this knife molle like on a vest mount this sheath upside down so the clip won't slide out and you're drawing the knife down and out
Great video - the Gerber Strongarm is on my purchase list for my offroading "get home" bag.
Thanks - and solid choice for your bag.
I appreciate the information to help with the decision. Stay safe out there.
It's like a modified LMF II. Only lower in price. Sweet!
Thanks for the video. I was trying to figure out how to use the smaller nylon strap to lash the knife to my pack and just got frustrated. Thanks for showing me the error in my ways.
+Craig Wildfeuer Glad to help, Craig.
This is one of several reviews I've watched to do with the new Gerber Strongarm Fixed Blade Knife. As you state, this is a handsome knife. A little unfortunate that it comes with 420HC steel but, I happen to own a Buck124 made of the same steel, and it's fine. I've seen this Gerber put through some very rough treatment and it held up well. Finally, it seems that Gerber is coming in to its own. I wish them well with future designs. The Strongarm is an indicator of good things to come from this knife company. A very good knife review.
+Teachering Well-said. I am in touch with them about reviewing one of their new Gator knives - fixed blade with S30V steel. Looks nice.
+EverydayTacticalVids Looking forward to that. Hoping to see if its good general use/wood processing or more hunting only
Very nice blade indeed!!
+SUFFICIENT SURVIVAL Thanks for checking out the video.
Got mine for 17.18, during the restock on amazon
Really good review… I've been looking for a knife i can take trapping and i can click it in and not worry about it but also put it on my mole pack and i think this is the knife. Thanks for the good review.
+Taylor Hawkins Molle*
+Taylor Hawkins Glad to help - let us know what you think when you get it.
Will do.
I need to get myself one in coyote tan,i lucked and found one in bdz-1 steel last year on eBay,i wished they had made more in bdz-1,but its still is a great knife,i love the grey on my bdz-1 steel an the stone wash finish.
Merry Xmas from Kentucky land between the lakes. Im waching this review before my wife ordered me the strongarm for Xmas But I didn't get the knife yet. They said it'll be home on monday. I can't wait to strap it on and head to the woods of kentucky. Thanks for the review.
Enjoy it!
nice video....if there is a concern about the "clip" falling out. . . put a zip tie thru the leg tie down hole & the clip. Thanks for the video!
Mine came from the factory dull as a butter knife! Will need a total reprofile!
You either had a defective clip for your molly set up or they have changed the design. Mine flairs out on the ends and once clipped in, there is no way it is coming out unless I take it off.
I agree mine is tight actually takes some work to pull my clip out the bottom
There's a lot of really convincing counterfeits on the market I think his might be one due to some things I see with the sheath and color there's a few videos on it
Just today got it
The clip can lock in if you trim a bit off with a file at the bottom edge
I saw this at Academy. I have been wanted a scout carry system. great price and ergonomic. just wished it cam in Tanto.... I think a great upgrade would be changing the fabric out to a custom leather type of rig. Great vid. I love all round 420 steel super corrosion resistant. getting it tomorrow
+Texas Slinger Yup - nice knife overall.
Just grind it down into a Tanto. Then put an edge on the new front edge.
Clip upside-down maybe for vertical upside-down carry on chest rig or olste carrier?
Can somebody tell if you can mount a Tek Lok on the sheath without doing any mods? Thanks!
go to Gerber fb page and look at the belt carry option posted there...makes vertical carry very solid.
Finally a video that was very informative , fair, and in-depth, as a former operator that knife appears to be one that I would possibly use and attach to my molle........
A little length of paracord would secure that clip if you were concerned about it falling out. Overall it looks like a good, solid knife but I wonder how the handle is secured to the blade.
Do you think that the strongarm would excel in an urban environment? I'm currently looking for a good fixed blade that could be used in an urban survival situation.
Thanks for a how to on the molle webbing
+James Carrizal Glad to do it.
Can anyone tell me an affordable alternative to an ESSEE 4P ? I do have this Gerber
you pay attention do details, had to sub,great review,gonna pic that blade up as camp beater look forward to more of your vids{
+sawdust 69 Welcome aboard - thanks for the sub.
I think I have to straight up agree with your review. I owned a Prodigy for quite some time now. Just curious, what tactical knife and what bushcraft knife would you pick from Gerber?
+styler797 I'm about to check out their new Gator with S30V steel - looks pretty nice. That might be my pick for a bushcraft knife. As for tactical, it depends on the price range, but the LMF and the Strongarm are both reasonably priced and an overall good product.
The clip is like 1 mm short of clipping properly you just need to cut on where you hold the clip and it will work properly Great review btw
just invert the knife on the molle so 1, easier to deploy and 2, the clip will have gravity hopding it down
Is it a full tang?,is it a flat or hollow grind ?...
I just pic this knife up on Walmart website for $40.00 bucks. I'm so excited!
ToddB987 Great deal on a very solid knife
Unfortunately we from outside the US have to pay for packing so buying a good knife is always more expensive for us 🙁
I only got one because of the scout carry ability.
Based on his experience, this Gerber Strongarm is a really good knife as they say? I'm looking for a sturdy knife, not great, that cuts for a long time and it's easy to sharpen, a knife is to be entrusted with life? I want a good product, you can do this in my case?
Strange on that clip...the one I have locks really tight. Good thorough review.
+Living Survival Thanks man - and yeah, strange about the clip. Mine may just be a lemon.
+Living Survival He doesn't have the clip pushed in all the way, thats why it is slipping out. The clip is perfect.
+Living Survival got mine last week and it has a definite lock and is not going any ware.....love it
How do i order a genuine US-made knife
what type of paint do you use to touch up the blade paint on your knife
You don't. The strongarm has a ceramic coating. But if you wanted to, you could probably use chalkboard paint to the same effect. Not sure how it would go, but worth a shot.
But, can one hammer with the pommel of yhe strong arm?
The base of the male snaps bent when I unsnapped it. They bent into a C shape with sharp edges sticking up. Has anyone else had that problem? I bought it from Knife Center so I don't think it's a fake. Everything checks out that it is not a fake but why would they use such cheap snaps that bend so easily?
Why is the coyote colored knife more expensive?
what flint fire starter did you use there?
+Sithlord UK Not sure which one it is - nothing special though.
why cant they make a simple vertical carry option W/O the nylon???
Pretty sure u can detach most of the nylon
The reason the handle feels small to some people is because Gerber designed it for the average soldiers hand wearing gloves , think about it and it makes perfect sense.
Where are you finding them so cheap?
This idea was in 2015 so price might have gone up. Worse for us outside the US because we have to pay postage
come on gerber! gives us a decent steel!
I'd really like plain 1095 with good heat treatment
+jabames a You and be both.
Yes 1095 is what I was hoping for
+Sid Organ 420HC is just fine if given a good heat treat.
James Ritchie Great, go tell that to all the numerous hunters out there that rocked the Buck 119 for over 30 years who swear by that blade. The Buck 119 was made of 420HC and is simply legendary. And I own the Gerber Strongarm, and I've beaten the shit out of it and its no worse for ware then when I bought it. Sorry, but you're wrong on all accounts.
Bad knife, good knife, great knife, there are many factors to consider to label a knife. Its one thing if its constant failure or extremely poor materials or quality. The rest is determined by the user which is all based on preference, comfort, skill set, and knowledge. For the sheath, there's nothing to complain about. This knife is worth every penny of $50. This is meant as a utility blade. With practice and patience, anything can be accomplished.
I was actually not very impressed with the ergonomics. I think the handle is a little too thin at the very front and starts to get irritating to the webbing between your index finger and thumb while carving for any length of time utilizing a hammer grip. I think having a little bit thicker handle would have benefited this knife drastically. Furthermore, this knife is absolutely horrendous for any type of food prep as the blade is extremely thick combined with a very low saber grind. This causes the knife to basically break the food apart as opposed to slicing it. Try slicing into an apple and you will see exactly what I'm talking about. Overall I think the sheath system is OK, but a bit oversized for my liking. I like a little bit more of a streamline sheath that's not so clunky on the hip. I definitely think they should've made some changes to the handle ergonomics, however I do like the fact that they made the knife reversible in the sheath, as I am a lefty and definitely appreciate that. Good review!
Just received a survival knife from China which had good reviews.
Surprise surprise......it came in a Gerber box, identical to Strongarm, full logos.
$25 incl tracked postage.
WTF?
Strange indeed.
it would be nice if it was double edged
check out the applegate-fairsbain dagger.
It won't be any good for starting a fire if it was double edged
They can be purchased much cheaper at Aliexpress FYI...
Yeah - that'd be a clone most likely.
EverydayTacticalVids possible I suppose but I purchased a Black one from Aliexpress and compared it to my coyote one I bought in store and I can't see a difference.
@@rusreck5853 even after 9 months of use or so
I can understand having a knife with serrations but not the main knife.
Schroeder_2000 yea maybe as a backup inside the kangaroo pouch on the sheath
I seen hatches chop worse than that actually. I really like my strongarm. But like my sog super bowie more LOL
Zip tie it to your pack if your worries about it coming off.
This knife needs a heavy blade reprofiling to make it good in cutting and slicing. If this is even possible with this blade geometry.Other than that it is very mud and abuse friendly.Gerber wanted to make a mix of a combat-tactical-bushcraft-backyard all purpose knife.Fail, because this knife can not be a really sharp, fine cutting tool.I find the sheath comfortable though.
How easy would the reprofiling be? I'm looking to buy this knife but the stories about how bad the grinds are are kind of deterring me
+Maxwell Li
I don't know.I started all the way down from #120grit stone to #3000.Now It slices paper and cuts ok for general purpose. However it won't carve and bite wood and material like my other knives. It has the blade geometry of an axe.I have high standards though, but still.
Ouch. Looks like I'm not going to buy it after all.
+Maxwell Li
It is a good beater knife though.Everyone needs one in the collection. It will cut carpet and clean backyard bush..dirty jobs without rusting.
Do you think it would be a good camp knife for a 10 day canoe trip in Maine? That's what I was going to buy it for
I think this ist a Fake Gerber Strongarm, based on a German YT Video how have both Versions Side by Side. Your User Manual Looks like the Fake one.
This one came to me directly from Gerber in Oregon.
I pay 70 for mine
I think Gerber has good stuff, just that bear grylls shit is well... shit.
I think gerber knives are one of the two extremes. completely great or completely shit
I got my bear Grylls knife when I was about 11 and had no clue about knives. I used it a fair bit and it held up quite well. Now I refer to it as a fun knife, just mucking around and throwing it into tree's and stuff.
+Hazza Big 1 Lol same here. Except mine is the designated beater knife, for those times when you don't want to use your main working knife, you grab the BG knife because it doesn't matter what happens to it anyway.
I disagree
GatorSmitty the bear grylls knife can’t hold an edge, and it has about 6 trillion feet of serrations and about 1 nanometer of blade, and it’s poorly designed. They really tried to make it like the LMF 2, but they pretty much failed.
Unfortunately that's a knockoff. The edge is ground too far back. The lettering is the wrong size and location, and is crisper on the real one's
That’s a fake Gerber. Incorrect single page size instructions and the blade has a step where it enters the handle
I had this sent to me from Gerber directly.
Did anyone notice this is not a real Gerber?
It’s real.
I've like Gerber products in the past but this sheath just seems cheaply made. I love that they are making most of their blades in the U.S. Now but they need to put more work into the sheaths.
Yea I disagree, this sheath probably tops all other sheaths unless it's a custom kydex sheath.
What is your opinion on the confederate flag ban
what is your opinion on gays being allowed to marry? who the fuck cares get the hell out of here
+Keep Out nice shirt bro
dont these knife makers want to make money, ??? i would buy two if they make one with a high end steel i would keep for self defense and the 420 i would use as my workhorse in the bush. i cant get my head around these companies not listening to their customers.
thanks. It's a good knife. But I can not buy it because it is very expensive in iran and this knife not exist here.we can not even buy a good fire rod.i love this knife and bear grylls new survival knife.we can just buy very very bad china made knife's.sorry my englelish is not good.
No one uses a knife for breaking rocks, only nutt'n fancy haha. u use rock to smash rock, thats it. And why,i dont know when you allready have a knife.
Who else thort that it was broken on the thumb nail 😂
No one
looks like it was sharpened unevenly.. Oh wait nvm that's just a Gerber thing.... Cheap piece of crap...
uh huh suuuuuure
That's a fake gerber
This knife needs a heavy blade reprofiling to make it good in cutting and slicing. If this is even possible with this blade geometry.Other than that it is very mud and abuse friendly.Gerber wanted to make a mix of a combat-tactical-bushcraft-backyard all purpose knife.Fail, because this knife can not be a really sharp, fine cutting tool.I find the sheath comfortable though.
Can't really be sharp you say. ua-cam.com/video/NQ-Eq5xcjUY/v-deo.html
