Amazing video! I used MS-DOS 6.22 for a long time, then started to used MS-WINDOWS 3.1 later on. Thanks for remembering old school , you have earned another subscriber
Great video. I will have to try doing this with DOSBox, I wasn't entirely happy with the way VirtualBox ran it. I remember starting a job as a typist in 1999, and my daily driver in the office was an ancient PC running Windows 3.1 and Office 4.2!
Dude, your content is fire. I'm trying to figure out how to get Civilization II to work, and all the forums I saw say Win 3.1 on doxbox. You are my gateway to gaming nostalgia. Gracias.
I am playing Civ2 right now on Windows 10. The secret is to use Civ2 Golden Edition which was 32-bit. You just need a small patch to avoid some crashes (easy to find) and the old no-cd patch. The real problem may be that the no-cd patch does not work on Windows 10 so you need to patch the Civ2.exe file on an older Windows before applying the Win10 patch.
1:50 there are actually different revisions of Windows 3.1, because there actually was Windows 3.12 or 3.2, but it only fixed one memory leak bug and was only released to the chinese market.
Oh Man.... I'll give this a try. Last time I tried to install 3.11 on dosbox it didn't work. =\ As you, Dos/Win 3.11 was the first system I had contact with. My first memory of using it by myself is to interrupt my father's shower to ask him what i had to type to open Gorillas on dos! xD That machine was also my first computer (an i286 upgraded to i386) after we got another with Win95... I even got to run Netscape on that 386!
@@clichayed Win 98 support in Dosbox has been working for quite a while now (since 2013!) dosbox95.darktraveler.com/w98%20part%201.html I don't think it's news.
Using DOSBox-X, I had to edit the conf file's machine setting to "svga_s3trio64v+" and install those drivers. Drivers found here gave me a black box as a mouse cursor.
I am having a really difficult time trying to figure out how to create a CD-ROM drive in my Win 3.1 in dosbox. I have been able to download a number of games but many of them say "insert CD" and I have no clue how to mount it! any help would be greatly appreciated!
I still have 3.11 wfw 3.5" floppies. 1.0 as well. They maybe 5.25". Have loads of those. I want to install the wing commander. Hard to do. Thanks for the video.
I installed the 3.1 yesterday and I can't seem to make Dark Seed 2 function normally, I get an avi error and the game doesn't play any cut scenes and there are no voices when the characters are talking, I can't find in anywahere a way to fix tha problem, could you help me?
I'm getting an error that says "Setup cannot copy the new OEMSETUP.INF File. This file must be copied for setup to finish installing the new driver successfully. See your equipment manufacturer for a new copy of-" This is happening while I install the S3 driver. Any solutions? I'm running 3.11 Edit: I ended up using trio64 drivers instead and they seem to work.
Is there a guide on how to install software through disks using this setup? I have the Windows 3.11 installation set up in Launchbox so I don't have to keep dealing with DOS commands every time I want to boot it up. Haven't mounted the floppy disk drive in DOSBox as of right now, so I should definitely consider working on that.
you can even pass midi to VirtualMIDISynth on dosbox to get the ST2 samples you want, I recommend "Arachno SoundFont", and "Chorium", really awesome music for DOOM and alike
Hey! Egee plz get back to me you have unlocked an absolutely ancient memory of mine seeing chips challenge at the end of this video! I didn't even remember playing it until now and never knew the name as I was 5-6 years old at daycare when I last played. Can you possibly tell me where you obtained your copy of chips challenge?? Thanks!

Why won’t my mouse move when I open windows 3.1? I can’t do anything past downloading it
You can also run Windows 95 in DOSBox, which is insane. Not great for running applications though.
That's gonna happen someday soon..

I'll have to revisit this because I don't recall how this worked for me ootb
the windows 3.1 i used is now saying non fatal error after rebooting :(
It's not three point eleven. It's 3 point one one. Back then 3.11 came before e.g. 3.2 as version numbers respected how decimal numbers work.

Your welcome! Enjoy Wing Commander!
Wing Commander works best on DOS. Windows would get in the way.

Hey how did you extract the .img files for windows 3.1? I think you skipped over that step
I don't remember tbh. I will revisit Windows 3.1 again in a Distro Delves episode soonish.
I did it with 7zip

As a matter of fact, yes! It's pretty old now, though medium.com/@egee_irl/lets-install-windows-3-1-in-dosbox-300c87d648f9
Whats the advantage of using dosbox over something like virtualbox
He mentions that things like sound drivers can be a real pain in virtralbox. He mentions this at 7:04
you can even pass midi to VirtualMIDISynth on dosbox to get the ST2 samples you want, I recommend "Arachno SoundFont", and "Chorium", really awesome music for DOOM and alike
it's faster and better
can you install dosbox on windows 11
and The windows 3.1 iso?
Hi, I tried to download the Windows 3.11 files and the 3.1 files but none of them have setup.exe! How did you get one?
The first computer job I ever got I worked on a Intel 286 computer that had windows 1.0
heck yeah
Can you please share your wallpaper that was used in this tutorial ?

Hey, what's that tracker file were you playing here?
If you already own the physical disks, it is still ethical to download
so you just go to windows 3.1 site and download windows 3.1 ?
what desktop environment are you using? (On your host)
looks like XFCE to me. I used Manjaro and XFCE looked exactly the same to me.
this is so much fucking work to play Castle of the Winds.
Anything for that sweet nostalgia
Hey can you use munt 32 with windows 3.11 at all and I heard that PCEM works a lot better than virtualbox give that a try!!!!!
