  • Platypod is the top name in ultra-portable mini tripod plates and they make an excellent product. I wanted to know how well their competition stacks up, so I bought and tested an Amazon alternative called the Decade Mini Tripod Base.
Here's my overview of the Decade product. I hope the video helps you make a great purchasing decision!

Just got my Decade mini tripod yesterday. Picked it up at Amazon for a reasonable $39 shipped. I'm very happy with the build quality and it included a carrying bag and strap which was a nice touch. Great piece of kit that won't break the bank.

Here are some tips to make it more stable. With Platypods, you only need one screw in the front, pointy end down for grip. Since we are a triangle shape, one screw lifts up the front and hits two more points of contact in the back corners giving you three in total, just like a tripod. With your Decades' circle design, you should use three spikes, like a traditional tripod. You can use two spikes to hang it off slanted objects or four to spike it into soft ground.
For your slippery log scene, we would suggest using three spikes with the pointy ends down to get more than enough grip, assuming they built their legs for grip like we did! If you were on a flatter but slippery surface, like a gym floor, we would recommend using a silicone pad, like the one in our Multi Accessory Kit.

@@MikeHagen In fact you can still use 3 spikes instead of 4, I just watched it and was thinking the same :)

I have one and have been using it for about 2 years. I works perfect for macro. It is just as good as or better than Platypods and cost half.

Hi, nice video. Interesting as of today, I cant find it for sale anywhere...
Just a question, when you said about the 4 legs not been very stable. Can't you know remove one leg from the front and move the other on the front in the middle, so effectively have 3 legs? Look like it's got extra holes on the front.
    Cheers

Not a lot of people know his:
If you have a four legged structure like table, or camara plate that wobbles; you can stop the wobble by rotating the table around the center of the legs.
Not ideal for a big square table in a restaurant, but work well for a round table or a camera plate (the ball mount does not care which way the plate is rotated)

I have used both. I got rid of the Platypod and kept the Decade.
