Yes, this is so sweetly retro, like the others - best on the album IMO. 60's back in 2017, with awesome quality and of course: Singers and talent. I just wait to find this live from your channel one day - or do you have already, well gotta go and see! Halien needs more ;)
I've got the album, it's absolutely wonderful, all of it. Best buy I've made in years, nothing on it I don't like. Haley was born 55 years too late but the advantage to that is that she's got two decades worth (60's and 70's) of songs she can reinvent beautifully. People who criticze covers don't understand that almost all artists are doing someone else's work. Linda Ronstadt, whose work Haley would do wonders with, didn't write anything, but was amazing. So is Haley. She makes "old" music I've not heard in decades, some I didn't even like at the time, completely new again and even better, far better, than the first time around. This entire album is amazing, she's going to have a beautiful career doing this kind of music, she was born for this and I'm just grateful I'm here to hear it. I've been waiting for this album since "House" on Idol. Finally, it's here. And worth the wait.
++genej101 I'm with you there about "covers". Who cares who wrote the song, or first recorded it? This idea that the singers should write their own songs is comparatively recent. Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard and Fats Domino did no writing to speak of. Go further back. Who's ever heard of a song written by Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra or Billy Holiday? Song writers wrote songs, and singers sang them. When I was young, I never heard the term "cover" being used, though I knew that Carl Perkins had written "Blue Suede Shoes" and recorded it before Presley, but nobody called Presley's version a cover. "Hound Dog" is another Presley hit that had originally been recorded (and apparently was a minor hit a few years previously) by Big Mama Thornton . (It's worth listening to on YT). Nobody called it a cover. Haley's "covers" are generally better than the originals because she is a far better singer than most of the original singers. A simple fact. However, people often have sentimental attachments to original versions, or they like the backings. So far I've not preferred a single original to her version except, perhaps Radiohead's "Black Hole Sun" which I liked pretty well as much as Haley's PMJ version.
++MrSirDrumAlot I'm wondering whether you meant that ORIGINALS can be improved upon by covers. I've no doubts that they can because so many of Haley's covers are better than the originals. I've already elsewhere mentioned the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. So many of their songs are what nowadays would be called Covers, and so were a number of Elvis', but they were far better than the originals. (However, back in the day the term "cover" was never used. I wondered what it meant when I first came across it!)
+Trevor Morris -- Minor quibble: Billie Holiday DID in fact write songs, at least one that I know of -- "God Bless The Child." And it was covered by Blood, Sweat, and Tears in the 70's (and is arguably a better rendition). Artists have often covered other artist's songs, and they've been called covers for years, there just seems to be a stigma attached now. Somewhat recent example: Trisha Yearwood sang "How Do I Live" for the "Con Air" soundtrack, but LeeAnn Rimes did it later and had a big hit with it...
++Andrew Martin I'd forgotten about "God Bless the Child" although there is a bit of controversy about the composer as I see that Arthur Herzog also claimed to have written it. I think she did actually write several other songs but the article I looked at isn't very clear - well not to me anyway. Chuck Berry wrote quite a lot of his own songs but apart from him it seems to be the advent of the Beatles was when the original song writing by groups came to be regarded as so important. Listening to PMJ got me going back to originals which passed me by years ago. So far I think all Haley Reinhart's covers are better than the originals except perhaps for Black Hole Sun. The reason is very simple. She is a far better singer than nearly the male singers that were with the groups, and I like the PMJ arrangements as well.
