    Great review. I have 2 of the 45 pound Ohio power bars in black zinc and 2 Texas power bars with black zinc finish. Ohio power bars are used more and preferred by my lifters. Also, we're in Cranston. Come up for a visit any time.

    If you oil your bar, rust is never an issue. I just lightly wipe down may bar using 3 in 1 oil once every 3 - 4 weeks depending on humidity.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      I've been using 3 in 1 on it but it still oxidized.

    • @TheNotDone
      @TheNotDone 8 років тому

      Must be awfully humid in your basement. Is the rust primarily on the collars or the knurling? When you're applying the oil, you need to let it sit for a bit before wiping any excess off.
      I'm sure you know what you're doing, but if your bar is oxidizing that rapidly, there may be environmental factors, or a deficiency in the application process.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      Not humid, but someone pointed out the fact I live so close to the ocean might be playing a role too. I also don't believe rust and oxidation to be the same thing necessarily. My other bars don't get it as much as this one, so that's another piece of the puzzle.

    • @TheNotDone
      @TheNotDone 8 років тому

      That's a great point, the ocean water is likely acting as a catalyst. And, you're right - oxidation can manifest in many forms, rust being just one of them. If you aren't already, you should take a wire brush to it to get rid of whatever rust has built up, then oil it.
      Aside from that, you really only have a few options - live with it as is, oil it more frequently, or add a permanent boundary layer to the bar (like a zinc oxide coating). But considering the cost of the bar and severity of the rust, I'd just keep using it as is. Stay big!

    I take it you got the westside bar before your KG plate set otherwise you would have got a KG bar.
    I have the old westside bar and the ohio power bar, and one thing that I like is that the old westside bar is a tad longer collar to collar which makes it easier when walking out squats. But the old westside bar was not in IPF spec because of that.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      That was def one of the reasons, as well as that was during the time they couldn't keep the 20kg OPB in stock. I just watched your bar review video and it's got me hankering for more bars. How as the Rogue DL bar held up?

    • @smokinHawkjh

    Brandon, so far you help me decide getting the RML 490 rather than the RML 690 and probably took my home gym cart from almost 5k to 3100 (wife is happy about that) but I still can't choose between this Westside and the Rogue OPB, I don't see an issue with the price, although my wife will be lifting with me so knurling might be the case but still...she can wear gloves...

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  6 років тому

    Could you do a video on knee sleeve comparisons? Also are you able to compete in USAPL competition with the STrong knee sleeves?

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      I've done a video on SBDs, Rehbands, and STrong sleeves previously. I'll likely do another with Titan's Yellow Jacket sleeves in the future. The Strong sleeves aren't on the IPF approved list, so they likely wouldn't be allowed in USAPL.

    Brandon should I invest in a Ohio deadlift bar, does the whip and slack make a huge difference when pulling heavier weight? Is it true you can increase more weight on pulls compared to a stiff bar?

    • @jamesgillam6478
      @jamesgillam6478 8 років тому

      Most people can pull more on a deadlift bar because of the extra whip, just remember they're not legal in some federations so if you compete it may be better to make sure it's legal in your federation

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      Typically you can pull more (in my opinion), however unless you have cash to burn I don't see a purpose in getting something you only get benefit out of 1 lift on.

    • @LukeGrahamPowerlifting
      @LukeGrahamPowerlifting 8 років тому +1

      I bought the 45lb OPB... Not that this pertains to you, but it russles my jimmies when people are so anal about getting the 20kg bar to get as close to meet condition as possible. is the one pound and slightly larger collar going to make that much of a difference?

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      There are some slight differences like you mentioned. Smaller collars also equals our to more loadable sleeves. I've also found walking out squats for me with a competition collar is a lot different than with regular sleeves. I have to change the way I do it b/c with a comp bar I end up banging the rack pretty bad. They also use a different weld on the sleeves on the 20kg I believe. Probably won't make a huge difference, but we're talking something like $50 so might as well go with the 20kg IMO.

    what else is better about the 20kg ohio power bar other than it having more sleeve length?

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  7 років тому

      It's IPF approved, so if you compete in that federation it can be beneficial.

    • @ichiagou
      @ichiagou 7 років тому

      i see. well i'm not into powerlifting, just looking to get a barbell set up at home for deadlifts. i don't care about grip so knurling doesn't really matter, i'll be either using straps or versa gripps. so probably gonna get the 20kg bar cause i could sure use the extra sleeve length(im pretty sure it has the longest sleeve length).
      what do you think about plates too btw? i've gotta use bumper for sure, i'm gonna be deadlifting on wooden flooring. i was thinking about the echo's at first but those are just way too thick for deadlifts. right now i have my eye on the black training plates though.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  7 років тому

      You can do that, I had bumpers before. Just know that you won't really be able to progress past 600lbs with them. You could always just build a platform like I have (even a smaller one just for deadlifts)

    • @ichiagou
      @ichiagou 7 років тому

      yea i was watching that video and your bar was filled to the brim lol. yea i probably won't be getting close to 600 anytime soon, maybe even never, so i think bumpers will be fine for me.
      maybe will build a lifting platform in the future, but i hate using them at my gym cause they're always dented. i prefer rolling the bar rather than setting up around it, and the dent always messes up the rolling.

    Tensile strength is why it has no whip silly Brandon

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому +1

      I think it can be misleading on that front. You'll find deadlift bars with a lot of whip that still have a relatively high PSI tensile strength in comparison to regular bars.

    • @iBeTonyy
      @iBeTonyy 8 років тому

      WOW I just had the biggest brain fart. I forgot what tensile meant... disregard that comment LOL

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 років тому

      I think you're still right, it does play a big role in it, but so do things like diameter.

    • @iBeTonyy
      @iBeTonyy 8 років тому

      Well tensile also takes into how much weight it can take before the bar actually snaps. Of course there are many things like the material that play into whipping etc... Who knew weight lifting bars could be so complicated...

      There's just not enough Team America references out there. That, sir, is the reason why I'm a subscriber.

    This barbell is trash once it ages. The knurl becomes slippery af. Would not recommend. Stick with the reg Ohio bar

      Only way a knurl doesn't stand up with age is due to use (which impacts all bars) or b/c of misuse.
