I've been trying to talk Tolkien fans into doing the same. Sure its cheezy to start out with, and these arent professional actors, but the writing and scenery has certainly been great. The directing is really improving too, but you really find out what professional actors can do, but the more practice the better. Is there a webpage or something that links ALL the trek fan shows?

One criticism I've had about TOS was the design of the Auxiliary Control. Since it's supposed to be down in the secondary section, I've always thought that it should look like an abbreviated version of the Main Bridge..like the "Battle Bridge" on the Galaxy Class Ships. The 1976 Blueprints showed a bridge located a few yards behind the Nav Deflector System!

I loved how there was two shots for the science officer, one showing him looking into the device and then a shot of just that screen. I don't why, but usually when they show everything it ruins the magic and imagination of it but having two shots just kept it all. Beautiful.

And if that didn't work, hide behind the planet killer. It could fire in only one direction and poorly against fast-dodging targets. Also, why did Decker not put his crew in shuttlecraft and escape pods and then land them along the length of the destroyer? Once the D/M got within a few light-years of a starbase or inhabited system, launch the crafts and race ahead to broadcast the terrible news and a forewarning. His decision to leave his crew helpless on a floating target, the planet killer's next fuel, was insane. Some more sane crew member should have pointed this out and made a hopefully more sensible recomendation.
The whole bridge crew must have lost their minds too, just as their commander did. Great performance by William Windom, though.

I often wondered about the decisions Decker made which resulted in the loss of his crew and how he wound up in the aux control room of the Constellation. There is sort of a Moby Dick theme that runs through parts of TNG a lot, maybe have Decker be sort of like Cptn Ahab being obsessed with trying to kill this thing, and that would carry on into the original TOS episode. I made a comment about this being a great idea, but it needs to be done as a full length feature film by the major studio and expanded to 90-120 minutes, and my mind had been racing for the past half hour trying to imagine what that story line would be and what characters could be developed and what the motivations would be, etc.

The Doomsday Machine is by far and away my most favorite TOS episode. The sheer terror on Decker's face and his guilt-driven mania that almost killed the Enterprise - whoa - images and a storyline that forever seared themselves into my brain. You guys are to be congratulated!! This is a very worth prequel to that awesome classic! Well done!

Big oof watching a Connie get shredded like that. Although I have to say, despite all the structural damage, its a testament to both the toughness of the Constitution Class and the know-how of Commander Scott's skill that she got underway under her own power again. Gotta say, I really didn't expect a 12-minute short to pack that much of an emotional impact, but that sure caught me right in the feels when the order was given to abandon ship. Its good to see that some folks still remember what makes good Trek - and its incredible that in spite of Paramount's non-competition 'guidelines', you guys still managed to squeeze good Trek into 12 minutes.

Excellent production. The plot of "The Doomsday Machine" reminds me very much of "Jaws". Even the suspenseful music is similar. Of course, the planet killer obviously influenced the Death Star ten years later. Love seeing those colorful TOS uniforms too, and the female crew members wearing nylons. This was a labor of love. Thank you!

Over the years, people mentioned they felt Jaws riffed from the Doomsday Machine track.
As for the TDM ep's feel/tone, IIRC, they went for a Caine Mutiny or similar film of the era, and, IIRC someone akin to Jimmy Stewart would have been cast. Something fell through, and William Windom's was picked up. His performance was so intense they had to dial him back or the ep would have been too dark, demoralizing, and more. Even in the 70s, I felt that, and that made it my fav Trek ep next to Balance of Terror.
TBH, this production feels the most tear-jerking of any Trek ep to date because I was projecting,. expecting those agonizing pleas from the planet the way 60s Decker emoted.
So, I'm glad that in this the screaming from the planet was left out/dialed back. Tho, part of me still wanted it there for authenticity to Decker's sheer losses.
