I set up two local accounts on a new Windows computer: an administrator account and a standard user account. Most of the time I use the standard account, so I don't mess something up inadvertently. I only log in to the administrator account when I want to install software or similar.

One of the first things I did with my new windows laptop, I uninstalled all the bloat wear like one drive, 365, Skype, teams, just anything I had no intention of ever using. Then I downloaded a new internet browser, installed it and found out how to completely remove edge. I disabled Cortana, I won’t use it. Now with Microsoft forces copilot onto everyone, I found out how to completely remove that as well. I would get rid of the Microsoft store but it’s the only way to actually get programs on your computer now days. I wish companies like Microsoft would stop installing things we don’t ask for. I wish the US would follow the EU and force Microsoft to allow us to uninstall the things we don’t want. No one wants Edge, not many people use teams or Skype, and not very many want to use AI like Cortana or copilot. Just allow us to customize our windows experience.

Only problem with a local account are the endless prompts and suggestions that state you should use a Microsoft account. Of course, you cannot shut these off; just like Windows and Office prompts about features that most could care less about. Then there are "your system is in an unsafe state" or "your system could run more efficiently" messages one many pages that need to be read and ignored. None of this is a big issue, but .... If security is that much of an issue, ditch windows. Some sacrifices come with that choice. Still, it would be mostly safer and more secure. Next video, Chrome login :)

I've always used a local account. My MS account is basically just used for my Xboxen. However, I've heard stuff about MS making it non-intuitive to set up a local account when firing up a Win11 machine for the first time. I have that situation with a new Win11 laptop that I have yet to unbox and place into service. Now, I know I can find this info elsewhere on YT, but such a procedure (workaround?) would be a nice complement to the info you've presented here.

I do clean installs when I upgrade from the Home to Pro version (using the free upgrade option). First step is to use NTLite (the free version suffices for my needs) to customize the Windows ISO image I download from Microsoft's site. Besides removing Windows components and apps I don't want, it gives me the option to automatically have the same account as the computer I'm using to run NTLite. That of course will be a local account, and I always use a generic name. So when I do the installation, I don't even get prompted with any of the account screens.

When you create that local account and you have to enter the credentials of your MS account, MS now knows that local account is the same person as the MS account, so I’m sure they are linked. Therefore the local account is no more private than the MS account. You probably don’t know the info is being sent to MS. If an average person like me thought of that, I’m sure MS thought of it long time ago.

The only way to force a climb down from this strategy is don't give them data to sell . However this is easier said than done especially if you run the home editions which i would guess a large majority do. Running pro and above does give other options but you need your tech head on to implement them

I always use my local account but have an MS account which I rarely use. However in Office I’ve noted that it displays the MS account at the top of the screen which I can’t get rid of. If I sign out of MS then Office keeps prompting me to enter the password??

First, there’s no such thing as privacy when you’re on the internet. There are all sorts of ways vendors and other people can get your information. Second, if you use a local account, Office can’t verify your license. Trying to log into Office 365 on your pc while your windows is logged into a local account will just time out. You will have to switch back to logging into windows with Microsoft, start Word to update the license, then switch back to a local account.

I actually do this myself. I use a mini computer to control my telescope and cameras. Where I go, there’s no internet. I use a travel router and connect to the mini computer with a laptop via Remote Desktop. The problem is, if the computer you are connecting to uses the Microsoft account, it will need the internet to call home. I found my rdp connection timing out often.

I just purchased a Win 11 and cannot type anything in the box after hitting Shift F10. Is Windows now locking the keyboard to prevent you from bypassing the setup?

I went to login to my HRKiosk on my computer at home. It sent me to a windows login screen that we use at work (nobody had told me this would happen, and it is only in the last month or so it was set up). Should I have any privacy concerns?

So I bought the computer September 2022 and it made me sign to Microsoft. How do I get all my information out because now that I gave the computer to my son I am all his stuff is saved on my cloud, my Microsoft cloud and I’m not able to get my emails and communicate because all our information is combined now.

Even if we're not login to Windows with Microsoft account, our privacy can still be seen, if we're using the internet on our laptop. There's nothing we can do.
By the way, I used Microsoft 365 corporate account as a login to Windows because our company requires this, and I can still login on it offline, although OneDrive keep screamin' on me through notifications about syncing files, even I setup OneDrive only specific folder used only for corporate, not the entire My Documents.

You can add local or Microsoft users or family members too. It's not just one type OR the other. Setup your MS account as an admin, and the local account as your internet browsing account and as a standard user....

Tip: you can create the local account when setting up the bootable USB using Rufus.

The only use I have for the account is to activate the digital license when I reinstall Windows.
