Lyrics:
Look what you started,
I seem to be coming out of my skin
Look what you've forgotten here
The bandages just don't keep me in
And when it was over, I woke up alone
And they cut me to ribbons and taught me to drive
I got your name tattooed inside of my arm
I called for my father but my father had died
While you told me fortunes, in American Slang
Look at the damage,
The fortunes came for the richer men.
While we're left with gallows,
Waiting for us liars to come down and hang.
And when it was over, I woke up alone
And they cut me to ribbons and taught me to drive
I got your name tattooed inside of my arm
I called for my father but my father had died
While you told me fortunes, in American Slang
And here's where we died that time last year,
And here's where the angels and devils meet.
And you can dance with the queen if you need,
And she will always keep your cards
Close to her heart ooh
So close to her heart before they tear you apart
When they cut me to ribbons and taught me to drive
I got your name tattooed inside of my arm
And I called for my father but my father had died
I called for my father but my father had died
While you told me fortunes, in American Slang
You told me fortunes, in American Slang

All these years on, and it still hits so hard... what an amazing song.
I just can't believe this came out 11 years ago. . Damn time flies
Just recently discovered this band , and lately it's all I listen to.
Wow I just rediscovered this I listed to these songs like 10 years ago and just rediscovered them
The old songs never get old and I get chills every time I hear them
I bought this on iTunes years ago, not sure how but I accidentally pressed something and it started playing on my phone.
Haven’t thought of this band in forever, best button pressing mistake I’ve had.
Welcome 2020, be safe.
Love this song
Do u apply? Or does the song??
Ha, old? I just discovered them. Old to me is "The Who"😊
Till this day!
This is my favorite band, hands down. The progression of this band from their album Sink or Swim, to The '59 Sound, and now to American Slang, is one that might be confused with a drift toward a commercial sound, and some have said as much. However, I think the progression is one of growth in songwriting and storytelling and musical strength. Keep it going Brian Fallon and guys. Music needs you.
Real life later-day rock n' rollers. I love this group and this track so much! East-coast, urban, working class...they're like the bastard sons of Bruce Springsteen.
one of the bands.....YOU CAN ALWAYS HEAR !!!!!!! every Song !!!!
The first song I ever heard by The Gaslight Anthem. It will always have a place in my heart.
3actfilms same! Reminds me of going to college in central jersey 6-7 years ago
My first song ever to. Back then in 2011. Oh my..
Mine was “The ‘59 Sound.”
They are back together!!
still incredible
Born to Run , When you where young and American slang are the greatest accidental trilogy of songs .
I first discovered the Gaslight Anthem in 2009 when they supported Bruce at Hyde Park in London & I feel in love they are great I hope they could reform they a my second favourite band behind the E Street Band. Bruce did a dvd of the above concert & Brian joined him on stage to sing No Surrender & you can see myself & a friend in the crowd! A brilliant memory & a brilliant band!
Saw them opening for The Killers at Wembley Stadium, I was already a fan but seeing them made me enjoy their music so much more. One of the best bands going.
Mark Edmonds omg LUUUUCCCKKKKYY! that would be an amzing ass c9ncert
Mark Edmonds So did I
Saw them there as well was a great gig
i'm still searching for a TGA's Song that i dont like, oh man. these guys are amazing
+Heitor BD haha maybe you won't find it ;-)
Sara Ruiz XD
When I think about the pandemic years, I will think about how Brian Fallon and all his musical projects kept the spirit of live music in my heart.
loving this band at the minute, its simple no bullshit, heartfelt rock n roll. is there anything better ?
No, there isn't! :')
Preach brotha, preach!
No, there isn't
Can’t think of anything better.
One of bests songwriters in modern punk. FCSP
Wait, this is meant to be punk? I was listening to this thinking "hey this is pretty decent pop rock" but it's meant to be punk? That's kind of pathetic ahahaha.
@@alphadogg64 Not really. With this album they shifted pretty much completely to pop rock/heartland rock. IMO, it's their best album, but definitely not punk in the conventional sense. Their first album (Sink or Swim) is a lot more quintessentially 2000s punk, and their second album (59 Sound) starts transitioning away from that toward this sound, but I could see how it could still be considered pop punk.
Love gaslight anthem and Brian, but this isn't and never was punk bruh.
@@mattmartin9558 gatekeeping is so not punk.
I heard this song at Hardrock cafe Rome and I immediately fell in love with it
I Highly Suggest that anyone who likes this song/band to listen to AM Taxi. I'm certain you will love them. They're new but I'm sure they will get much bigger soon.
If you ever drive to New York City, make sure you put this on when you're halfway through the Lincoln Tunnel. Just do it.
caliou
xAlyssaJones37 I have a vivid memory of going over the Manhattan Bridge on a train listening to this, and watching that skyline with this song... sigh...
xAlyssaJones37 my dream. I'm Aussie
Trying to get back to New Jersey? Or have that identity still

And I called for my father but my father had died
We called for our mothers but our mothers had died
Oh, you told us fortunes in American slang
Oh, you told me fortunes in American slang
@BlastFromYesterday Yes, the album is also "American Slang"
Gaslight Anthem is the best of both worlds. It's like the music my dad raised me on and the music I began listening to as I got older had a baby. My dad's hooked on them now too. =)
The gaslighters are a great band and her sounds are fantastic Rock`n Roll.
My late brother's fav band i will always remember when he showed me this song same as jimmy eat world... alternative rock
Top 3 favorite bands ever
I live in Australia and absolutely love Gaslight and Brian....most underrated in this country!!! Keep them coming!
@MattyE191 completely agree. The Killers and The Gaslight are my two favourite bands and they don't sound the same at all. Different styles, both influenced by Bruce though so thats probably where the similarity is heard..
This song has grown on me over the months. I now think it is fantastic. I can say that I really like each of their records and look forward to the next. These guys are great and have genuine charisma. That is is pretty rare today.
They aren't punk to me. Maybe Sink Or Swim, but to me the Gaslight Anthem is just a great rock and roll band with great influences. And it shows. I'm a dedicated listener to the greatest young rock band out there.
'59 Sound = One of the better albums I've heard in a long time.
American Slang = A great follow up to a practically perfect album.
i love the "here's lookin' at you kid" reference
I just heard this song and band on the radio today. Great song. Not a big alt rock fan but i like it
the boss's lost children
SO UNDER RATED!!! i love listening to bands that deserve more to be famous, and then watching them become loved by all the smart people!!!
HAVE ANY BANDS LIKE GA IN MIND????!!!!
i really like the small "un famous" stuff.
This album is just another classic waiting to happen, they're finding their own voice, style and rhythm. The whole album is one amazin song after another! I love these lads, my all time band no question! And remember lads and lasses I'da called you Woody, Joe.
Saw these guys open for Rise Against in Montreal, and they were pretty damn good,
The day they will release a new record, there will be a great party! Wait for that day! 😊👍
@oregonflatland I find American Slang is different but as good as the 59 sound all the same. The songs have that same Gaslight feel as well as the emotion that they are known for by their fans. Great Album.
@Robinpeys It's about transitioning into adulthood. About having to leave things behind, and going through things you never knew you could handle.
And head down to Asbury Park. Silverball and the Wonderbar.
Seen gaslight play at St. Andrews hall in Detroit way back, do you self a favor and crush the discography. Track to Track = Win
GREATEST BAND KNOWN
FROM JERSEY LIKE BRUCE AND ME
For the record, if anybody hasnt seen them in concert, they put on a SWEET show!
I was sure Brandon Flowers was singing on this song particularly in the later part of the song. Guess not but they have a Killer’s esq sound on this one imo.
I love this band. This band screams America and culture that this beautiful country has.
@pihingler Wow. You need to look around a little bit. So many good punk rock bands out there.
I used to have the album CD
Man, this is easily one of my favorite bands making music right now, but is it really so hard to make a music video that doesn't suck.
Hypnotic... magical... it touches my soul...
The Gaslight Anthem, one of my 10 favorite band ever!
BEST THING I VE HEARD IN SUCH A LONG TIME AWSOME BAND AWSOME SONGS ON EVERY ALBUM CAN'T WAIT TO SEE GASLIGHT ANTHEM IN NEWCASTLE
@cky2chris I understand that their newer songs aren't the same, I was reffering to the older sound of Against Me! but at the moment I posted that comment, i wasnt thinking about specifics. But without watching the music video, and just listening to the music, the music sounds like Against Me!. I appreciate both bands. Maybe it's just me that hears it. I wouldnt expect everyone to agree with me. lol
Brian Fallon is my hero
I love this band soooo much. This video is awesome too; the images are so simple but they manage to convey the meaning of the song so well. Just convinced me to apply at the college I liked in New Jersey also :)
Love it, I was thinking the same. One of the best episodes!
haha have a look at 1:09, the guys wearing a wicked cap from a german footballclub that is considered to have the funniest and most passionate fans in Germany, whenever the score a goal at home, they start jumpin around listening to blurs song2! great! ;)
@golluba lol not really but i guess i get how you think that for me the only similarity is that the drums for this song sound like one of their songs right before the chorus where it gets all slow but thats all
awesome video...love the atmosphere in it...and the song is amazing as well
i love them.
They just can't go wrong...
Just Good Music
I accidently saw them on Southside Festival. Great band, great song!

ABQ, NM Launchpad 2009, changed my life!
I went back to this and I found I had accidentally disliked it.
Nothing can cleanse me of this sin.
Looking forward to seeing them in glasgow, got some quality tunes
@pihingler i dont even think of GasLightAnthem as punk, it reminds me of pure Rock n' Roll.
What a great band, great new album and song!
Great song. I wonder where the inspiration for the lyrics came from? They just seem to evoke such passion
I saw them yesterday in Lowlands, it was awesome
For some strange reason, I was listening to another band, when American Slang popped up in the sidebar. I think UA-cam's trying to tell me something ;) Cracking band and song, if Biloxi Parish is anything to go by, the new album's gonna be great.
Awesome song, from an amazing band, not much more can really be said.
Every time I hear this song, I get goosebumps.
Sweet.
Going to see 'em in June
“In a dream I had, all in a dream I had.”
❤
Great song. Gotta love it. Thanks for the post.
Look up the acoustic version to this song. Much easier to understand if you can't understand this version

I love all their songs but "Meet Me By The River's Edge", "Boomboxes and Dictionaries" and "Say I won't (recognise)" are my favrouite and I just love the lyrics "Sally sais, Sally said I can't take no more regret... Meet me by the river's edge we're gonna wash these sins away or else we won't come back today. (i know I think all their songs (including sometimes you eat the bar (sometimes the bar eats you).
