My 4th grade teacher, Mr. Shannon, used to play this song when we were doing silent work sometimes. I shit you not, after months of hearing this, at least half the class was singing and humming along. 13 years later and it stays on my playlist.
This is the first song I heard by The Gaslight Anthem, about a year ago. I always seem to come back to them, because their songs are simply phenomenal.
I love all of their albums but…The ‘59 Sound and American Slang are absolute masterpieces. Two of the best albums I’ve heard in the last 20 plus years. Broke my heart that they called it quits.
This takes me back to 2008: driving my truck, this album playing on the radio, on my way to class. Not a care in the world. Oh how the world and our lives changed since. Thank you, Brian, Benny, Alex R. and Alex L.
I'm working my way through each of their albums. I finished Sink or Swim and I'm about to start the '59 Sound. I think this is already one of my favorite songs by them.
I bought this CD in january and it still is in heavy rotation in my car, my stereo, my ipod, everywhere...took me a few listens to really get them, but they are soulful, moody, nostalgic and refreshing all at once. Amazing band, with a subtle but extremely distinct personality.
i've never fell in love with a band so quickly as i have with the gaslight anthem. i remember the first time i heard this song i was hooked. they're the ones that will bring back classic rock...none of this power-pop electronica or deathcore crap that people have been mass producing.
Mary, this station is playing every sad song I remember like we were alive I heard and sung them all from inside of these walls In a prison cell, where we spent those nights And they burned up the diner where I always used to find her Licking young boys' blood from her claws And I learned about the blues from this kitten I knew Her hair was raven and her heart was like a tomb My heart's like a wound And I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn't you? Mary, I worried and stalled every night of my life Better safe than making the party And I never had a good time, I sat by my bedside With papers and poetry about Estella With great expectations We had the greatest of expectations I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn't you? It's funny how the night moves Humming a song from 1962 We were always waiting We were always waiting We were always waiting for something to happen I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life Everybody leaves and why, why wouldn't you?
His voice just makes me want to cry. I don't know what it is, but it does. And I love it. I haven't heard many of their songs yet, but what I have heard, I absolutely love. :')
I was first introduced to this band when the '59 sound was released. Little did I know then that I had been gaslit my whole life by my family. Seems very appropriate now!
I remember playing World at War with my laptop to Indy 103.1 in LA playing on itunes radio and this song came on. made the decision to go to Amoeba the next day after about 30 seconds.
I'm from London and i love the gaslight anthem, A radio station called xfm played one of there songs about 10 years ago and ive loved them ever since. They are not known over here, fuck knows why, they are class 🇬🇧
the first time i ever even heard of them was when my friend bought me a ticket. im so hooked. i could listen to this album over and over again for weeks on end and never get sick of a single second of it! so much heart goes into their music.
The Gaslight Anthem is and has been born on punk....blues...rock....they are the heartline of TRUE music. You can't say the same for The Killers. There's a reason why this band is getting noticed so much more now. Because it's REAL music. Not manufactured.
"I never had a good time, I sat by my bedside, with papers and poetry about Estella." Even the greatest modern music quote is a reference. Nothing new under the Sun? Maybe. But, there's nothing old about being young and heartbroken.
i love this band...they have a hint of nostalgia in there sound... im 20 yrs old and from ga im bearly old enough to feel nostalgic about anything.. but somehow they make me feel that way.. it's weird
It does seem weird kind of like that deja vu feeling we sometimes get but I remember having that same feeling of nostalgia when hearing certain songs as a kid. I think it's something innate in us, within some of us more than others maybe. Not sure how to explain it as I don't really believe in us living multiple lifetimes but who really knows? Anyhow, cheers and yep Gaslight Anthem is great!
@SoulMaker i was a huge gaslight fan but i became an even bigger fan after seeing them live a few years ago at leeds fest. stole the festival for me like. such a great live band. even cowgirls get the blues is my favourite song for them to sing live. amazing. jealous you got to see them last week.
Always liked everything I had ever heard by these guys. Finally own the entire discography and listen to the albums all the time. Fantastic and amazing band!
Holy shit... I grew up listening to my mom blast Bruce Springsteen in the car. And now, hearing these guys for the very first time, this guy's voice is eerily similar to Bruce's. And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. This is so surreal. I love it. I'm going to be listening to this band a lot in the future, I suspect.
xAlyssaJones37 I heard his and Chuck ragans version before this one that was when I feel in love with Bryan I knew chuck from my early teens from skate videos
Just getting into this band. Like them a lot. Theyre definitely becoming one of my favorite bands. The Segar reference in the song made me like them even more
Don't compare, just enjoy! Two great albums. Looking forward to the third in the making. As Brian Fallon has said - you have to be able to make three good albums. Great Expectations!
I've seen these guys live twice, and will do again in July. they are quite simply the best thing that happened to me in 2008. Quite simply my fav band (and I'm not the sort of person who usually gets all fanboy about anything)

I got to see Gaslight Anthem on both Boston dates of the 59' Sound 10th Anniversary tour. I'd give anything to relive those two nights.
LUCKY!!!!
I was there both nights too! Those shows were amazing.
I was there the first night. Incredible! I saw them last summer in Portland. Still sound great!

There is no getting sick of this song
today in my math class, some stoner kid saw my streetlight manifesto shirt and directed me to this band. i'm glad for stoners.
I wonder where he is today...
@@AustinTehSkwurlCurry Still in that same math class. Getting high and telling kids about this band.

Gaslight and Streetlight are the greatest bands named about lights. That’s why

I used to play this record at the end of the night in the kitchen every close, and once I put this song even wait staff knew the night was over.
Whats so good about the Gaslight is that there is not just one great album. No matter who you ask everyone has a different answer.

best band of 2008 and 2009. i cant get enough of them
It's amazing this group is not even known in my country, Spain! I'm showing their songs to all my friends and we're all becoming fans!
My buddy showed me Miles Davis & The Cool recently. Now I can't stop listening to the album every song is incredible. I guess better late than never.
played this on repeat while I was barely conscious in a hospital bed in early high school, will be forever grateful for this band ❤️
