- Today we finally turn around! We got the block back from the machine shop and we can finally start reinstalling parts. In this video we tackle the Crank, Pistons, and the rear main seal.
This is going to be a long series so make sure you subscribe to the channel to keep up on new videos released every week. The VK56 is in plenty of cars including the Titan, Armada, Patrol, Pathfinder, NV, and Infiniti QX56. It's also common to swap these engines into an Xterra of Frontier! A swap is a great time to rebuild the engine so use these steps to prep your engine for your ride.

This is absolutely the best DIY Engine rebuild video on the internet. I don't care if it's Titan or Camry, your instructions are complete and applicable to any build, with attention to specific vehicle specs of course. You're a great teacher.
Thanks so much Ahmad! I really appreciate it. :D
You are awesome!
I’m just finished this step in my rebuild today.
I can’t wait to hear this baby roar
That's awesome. Let me know how it goes.
Just so well done...the wrenching and the filmmaking!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that.
Nice to see progress again. Very meticulous work, right up your alley.
Thank you! :D
Thanks!
You're a legend. Thank you Scott!
When yo install your bearings, for your thrust washers you can use white lithium grease to hold them in, works better than oil. Also rule of thumb, your bearings should have both grooves, (notches) are on the same side, Not all caps are arrowed. You should have sent your crankshaft to be professionally polished. Have rebuilt hundreds of engines in my lifetime. But overall you are doing great. Cheers.
Would you happen to know an estimate of an engine rebuild
Nice looking block, sir.
Thank you kindly
Anxiously awaiting part 9. I am rebuilding my VK56 also. Your videos are a HUGE help!! Keep up the great work :) Oh BTW, Please add some keywords so guys like me can find your videos easier. It wasn't until I started looking specifically for "VK56" did I come across your videos. There is really Nothing on UA-cam regarding engine rebuilds for the Nissan Titan / Armada / Infinity QX56. Can't wait for the next Video! :)
I'm anxiously waiting too! LOL. The damn machine shop STILL has my heads. So glad my videos are helping out. I'll work on some better keywords. What vehicle are you rebuilding for?
@@Rythecarguy I've got a 2006 Titan 2WD That I bought recently and the head gasket was blown. I have it out of the truck and am tearing it apart right now. Given that I basically have to pull the entire motor apart just to get to the head gaskets I figure I may as well do rings and bearings as well. So far everything looks pretty good other than the cracked manifolds LOL. WOW! Machine shop has had your heads for a while now. Hope you get them back soon. Cheers
Mr Ryan sir I have a question. How loose of the crank supposed to be after torquing all the bolts. Mine seems pretty stiff. I torqued it down to specs and I’m still feeling like it’s overly tight.
Been a while Ry, your not messing around now huh? Haha. Love it.
Hey Curt! Yea it's been too long! I quit my job and just do this now. Not messing around indeed. Nice to see ya, hope you're doing well.
@@Rythecarguy that's amazing. Your good at it for sure. I'm doing good buddy. Have a good one.
Hey Ryan, I'm going to be doing this same engine from my Pathfinder this coming winter, because #8 cylinder is dead and burning a LOT of oil. I read this engine has "ductile iron liners" I take it these aren't replaceable? I'm thinking I will have to have the cylinders bored out. Hopefully this is doable. Just looking for your opinion. Thanks.
LOL, you are a real treat! Thanks
Glad you enjoy!
Nice relaxing music
Glad you think so! Thanks!
Love this series! Did you have to gap the rings? Or did they come pre gapped? Do you also have links to the bearings and rings kits you went with? Thanks a ton for all you do, super helpful!
Thank you, glad to help! The rings were pre-gapped, but I measured every one to verify that they were within spec. I did not want to leave anything to chance. As far as the parts, I did a FULL break down on my website and gave you all the spreadsheet on the cost and specific parts. You can find the document here: rtcg.tv/2022/06/24/nissan-titan-rebuild-cost-breakdown/
Hope it helps!
What size is that pvc?
“Don’t need to go crazy here of course”
*proceeds to pub dunk the entire piston in oil*
😂
Who measured and sized the bearings? Were the walls in good enough shape that no additional honing was needed? I feel this may be a pretty important thing to note, but amazing job on the videos! Very very informative!
TBTH I just checked wear on the old bearings and nothing was worrisome so I replaced all with standard sized bearings. And no the walls all check out with basic honing.
@@Rythecarguy Awesome! Thanks for the reply! Great videos!
Took a screenshot at 5.30 and it looks like about a half inch parting where the crank was formed. A cast crank typically has a single casting line. I tend to think this is a factory forged piece. Have read extensively one and have not been able to get a definitive answer.
How much do you charge to do that job I'm in Texas Dallas Infiniti Qx56 2011
Rod Bearing set link?
Did you send the crankshaft caps with the block as well? Did you just clean the crankshaft yourself? What about the pistons? New?
He had the cam and crank caps and cleaned them up. I cleaned the cams and crank myself. Pistons were cleaned and re-ringed.
@@Rythecarguy my xterra with the VK is just about done. But after watching this playlist 2 times, I’m really considering purchasing a high mile engine and doing a rebuild my self. Great series man! How’s it been running
Lil bit of engine lube helps hold the washes on place
💪🏻💪🏻
Where did you get the new engine
I took it out of my Titan.
Does a 2009 vk56de have a forged crankshaft from the factory?
With a set of aftermarket forged rods and forged pistons (with adequate fuel and tuning) allow you to build a 1500whp engine?
I ask because one can build a 4.6 32v Ford engine with the Teksid block. Using a factory Kellogg forged crankshaft with forged pistons and forged rods (with turbo and proper fuel and engine management) build 1500 whp. I figure since it is a 4.6 and this engine is a 5.6 it should easily be able to make the same power.
Thanks to whoever knows the answer about the factory 5.6 crankshaft.
where did you source the parts???
I'm trying to rebuild the VK in my NV work van and can't find a place to buy a rebuild kit and or the parts needed to rebuild my motor ):
really learning alot from your videos keep it going :D
Glad to help! Check out this link from my website. It shows everything that I bought and where I got it. Keep in mind that Amazon links are affiliate links. Just to disclose... rtcg.tv/2022/06/24/nissan-titan-rebuild-cost-breakdown/
Awsome engine! Is it going in your Xterra?
Thanks! I wish. This one is going back into my Titan. Hoping to pick up another VK56 someday to put in the X.
I did one fx 45
You forgot mansion of the direction of the piston rod in case, if you need upgrade pistons for a bigger size.
Not sure what you mean. I mention what direction the rod needs to face during install. Are you referring to something else?
Need to throw the VK56 in the xterra ;)
I really want to. I am thinking about picking up another VK56 online, doing another rebuild, and throwing it in my X.
@@Rythecarguy that would be awesome, I’ve been considering getting one for my X.. So it would be quite a treat if you did it so I have someone to learn from and do it myself. I just did the suspension on my X. Next is the engine and tranny.
all are 75 fp
Title says part 7, thumbnail says part 8
Fixed it, thank you!
