How long could you use those first masks?
It depends on mostly on the amount of use. I mention some other hints when it's time to change them in the video @@dagtyu

Store the activated carbon filters in a ziplock bag, so they stay active longer (otherwise they keep absorbing smells from the area).
Great tip! Thank you!
Thanks!!!
If you use the universal NATO standard RD40 (or DIN40) mm connector filter cartridges, they come with plugs and screw caps that you can put back on the filters and extend the service life a bit more.
The cons is that it looks military.
@@VT-mw2zb that's a pro ;)
that's a great tip
This video was extremely helpful. So much better than just standing in the aisle staring at all them.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Absolutely love your videos. Smart, no-nonsense, very informative and easy to follow. I’m new to woodworking and it is almost scary how often I have a question about routers, masks, clamping, etc then you release a video that gives me all the information I need to move forward and/or make my own decisions. Many, many thanks!
That is wonderful! Thank you for sharing. :)
I haven’t commented for a while, but I’ve been a big fan of your channel for a long time- it’s great to see the number of subscribers up where your approach and content deserves.
Thank you very much!
Really good information; thank you for taking the time to go over the subject matter in such detail; subscribed. I have the RZ and a 3M half face; both seem to work great. One tip that might help: when using a half or full face respirator, after you put it on, cover each of the cartridge inlets with the palms of your hands, simultaneously, and draw a strong breath in ... if the mask sucks tight against your face, effectively not allowing you to breathe in any additional oxygen, you have a good seal. This was how we were taught to verify a good seal on our gas mask, in Basic Training.
Great information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
The negative pressure test you describe is actually an OSHA requirement for workplace respirators and is to be conducted each time a person dons a respirator.
I was using those paper masks when I started woodworking. They offered no protection really. I'd be coughing for a couple of days after sanding when using paper masks. I received the RZ 2.5 mask for Christmas 🎄🎁.
Was doing some sanding earlier today and haven't been coughing at all. My wife's present may have just helped save my life.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and keep up the great work.
That's really great to hear!
Great, great video! My son and I were just talking masks last week. I learned a lot today- Thanks so much. This was very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
This was exactly the information I was looking for. Clear and to the point. This knowledge is essential if you care about your health. Tnx a lot.
Thanks for the comment.
This was incredibly informative - everything was well delivered and edited! As someone who often has trouble parsing technical information like this, I really appreciate the concise and entertaining way you presented the information. Little details like the acted out mask testing segments really go a long way.
I was wondering: I am someone who is working with polyurethane foam. The nature of my work requires me to sculpt the foam carefully with scissors and electric carving knives, meaning lots of tiny pieces and particles get everywhere. I vacuum frequently, but am worried about breathing in the "dust" as I work. I was considering getting a p100 filter with a 3M mask - perhaps a 6500, after seeing yours. I like the idea of the cartridge mask since I can swap the filters for different applications (such as spray painting) if I require them in the future. Do you think this would provide adequate protection? Or do you have a different recommendation?
I was also wondering, with 8 hour a day work, how long would you say those pink pancake filters last on average? Or what is the recommended rate of replacement?
Thank you so much again for this incredible and informative video! This was a much needed resource and I appreciate it a lot!
I know you can get the cartridge filters for 3M with a prefilter attachment which holds a particulate filter in front with a rated N95 or P100 or whichever you want.
Nice choice on the 3M respirator. I got the same one works great.
You just saved my lungs 👍 thank you! I have been wondering what all these option of filters where for years thanks for all the info great! video 😎
Happy to help!
Great video. I appreciate your methodical explanation of particulate and vapor protection options. As an advanced middle-age woodworker who dabbles in painting and welding, I'm looking to up my lung PPE and your video is very helpful...thanks!

Amazing information. EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you!

Thankyou! this was very helpful for understanding the mask I need to work on my spray painting project. THANKS!

Any recommendations for what to wear when cutting glass bottles with a wet tile saw and also with sanding the glass? Thank you!
I don't know for sure, but I think just a P100 filter would work great. I'd contact a glass supply house and ask someone there just to make sure.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Thank you!
This is a great video with loads of good info - thanks so much for taking the time to make and upload it!!! Question - how often should we change the filter on a mask? Obviously it depends on various factors - how often used, how long it's been installed etc, but is there a rough "rule of thumb" I could use? Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the comment. I only rule of thumb I have is... if it gets hard to breath through, it's time to change it.
Thank you this was so helpfull to me nicely organized and very informative yet enjoyable
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great video! I'm still on the hunt for the perfect respirator. One fof welding at home and the other for dusty renovations at work. I wear Prescription glasses and breath heavy so the 3M with the downward valve should be next on my list. My big issue is the pressure and discomfort on my nose. Cheers!
I wear glasses also - any recommendations
@@rohitbhatnagar7599 I did find a good one that I have gotten used to. 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6503QL, Gases, Vapors, Dust, Large. After getting it adjusted properly and positioned correctly ( it took a while to figure out how I like it to fit comfortably all day) iI realized that the knock off cartridges weren't doing the proper job and I now only have been using the 3M brand. I bought these off Amazon, but a local supplier my have a better price. This has not fogged up my glasses like the other ones do. Best of luck!

perfect video. expained everything perfectly. i would just like to make sure, for something like gold/silversmithing ( sanding, polishing, soldering metals.ect.), would an m3 mask with a p100 filter be best? (as opposed to the disposable "9320" type masks in terms of filtering power, comfort, and time between replacements?).
thanks!!

Hi there,
I need a mask for running. I've been looking into 3m and msa masks but they seem to be focused purely on professional type work and not what i need, which is a mask that allows for free flow unencumbered breathing, particle blocking, n95 or higher and exhaust port. Any thoughts about how I can approach this?
This was so helpful and informative! What do you recommend for second hand cigarette smoke? My roommate smokes a lot, and I'd rather not breathe that in.
As Clyde pointed out facial hair will severely limit effectiveness of a respirator. You can have something like a goatee but only if it is trimmed tight under the chin. If you can see hair it's definitely limiting.
To test a respirator hold your hands over the intake holes and breathe in. If The mask collapses it's doing its job.
Thanks for adding this comment. Great stuff!
Intake holes? That is the entire filter surface. Not possible. The ports are for exhaust, not intake.
@@mrpush2532 some like mine from Airgear use a plastic cap that encloses a particle filter with the organic filter cartridge. These plastic coverings have openings (2 * ~18 cm^2) in them, I assume that is what OP is referring to as they are easy to fully cover with the palms of your hands.
@prixtront7240 yes, understood. I was thinking mainly "paper" masks. Makes sense.
I'm about to buy a respirator and came across your video. Thank you so much for all the detailed information.

Great video. That should definitely clear most things up. Thankfully my mom really pushed PPE (half and full face respirator) use on me when I got serious about woodworking back in the early 90's and have been all about 3M and North ever since. I've also used Survivair and MSA but they never clicked. I changed from the 3M 7503 to the 6503QL once it was released and haven't looked back but I still feel the 7503 is way more comfortable.
Thanks for sharing! Great info!

Great Video, just what I was looking for.

I've been welding for 24 years and use a north half face respirator with the over the shoulder hoses. For welding, this style of respirator will keep the cartridges out of the plume of smoke and will allow me to use 1 set of cartridges for up to a full month. In order to get a proper seal, you need to be clean shaven. That's why you never see a fire fighter with a goatie or a beard. I will be upgrading to a PAPR air fed welding helmet.
Great information! Thank you for sharing Chris!
I want to add emphasis to your statement that to get a proper seal, you need to be clean shaven. Even the very short beard on the presenter in the video is enough to allow toxic vapors and fumes to be inhaled directly without being filtered out by the filters. People DO die from inhaling those fumes every year.
100%. Shave right before you do your project or go for work. It’s key to make sure that you get a good seal, also size is really important too. You want the mask on tight, but not tight to the point it’s not comfortable, I tighten it off to where it’s a good seal but a little too tight, and go to work. I get used to it and it doesn’t bother me, but sometimes it can slowly loosen off especially with the cheaper 3M masks.
What kind of respirator is needed for masonry, grunding mortar joints
Thank you
This video is pure gold
Your video is very informative. I was considering a full face respirator like for example the 3M 6800. I do mainly wood work but sometimes have to spray paint. Would you please add one or more full face masks in your review?
Anything 3M is good
Thanks I was trying to figure out which was I needed for some light painting on a car and clear coating. It seems like the 3m P100 should be enough for small projects. This is just for a hood, or lower trim.
I painted a car in the garage with a 3M half mask with a carbon filter, the fog was that thick yet the air was the freshest air youve ever breathed through the mask.
So both the acetone and varathane polyurethane with the black cartridge, P100? They're mainly what ill be working with.
I don't think i'm brave enough for resins like 2 part or UV, but out of curiosity what cartridge would go with resins?
Could the msa with organic vapor filter be useful when air quality is poor in my city? Great video by the way...
Thanks for the helpful information! The kids have been farting a lot lately and now I know which filter to use! No more breathing gas fumes for me!
lol
You're amazing thanks for your service
I appreciate that. :)
i personally use the 3M 6503QL with the 3m combination cartridge

So helpful thank you!
You're so welcome!
Where I work we took a class on respirators and was fitted for mask and tested to see if was sealing correctly. We went to a store that sells welding equipment and safety products. If have facial hair like beard or a mustache the mask will not seal correctly. It is the same thing as a gas mask.
Hey Clyde! Thank you for sharing this information... it's helpful.
Great video, woodworkers often know more about masks than some health experts! Thanks
I would add: all of the current administration's "health experts".
Which mask can be preferred for the rubber production stage?
Great video, deserved my like.
Is basecamp masks filter enough for resin 3d printing ?
As they have carbon layer... just wondering... much better than those big masks with big cartridges...
Personally I don't like the basecamp masks, as I feel they don't provide enough protection.
Fantastic video! Thanks
Much appreciated! If you want to support my work, please drop some more comments on my other videos! This helps to wake up the YT algorithms. :)
I've been able to find disposable respirators which are carbon activated. They are only recommended for 'nuisance' level organic vapours. Does anyone know what this level is and if theyre worthwhile at all over a reusable cartridge/filter mask?
Thank you so much. This is an excellent video. I am just getting into resin work and purchased the 3m 6500QL with the organic filters. So I think I purchased the correct items for this task. People have told me I need to wear goggles. I do wear eye glasses. Are the goggles still necessary for resin work. Is the need for the eye protection in case something gets splattered or also for vapors?
I would think just for splatter... Glad you liked the video Buddy!
Very informative video, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a question I just ordered the mask with the 3M p100 cartridge (pink pancake). Can I replace the pink pancake ones with msa organic vapor ones?
Really informative video, thank you - but worth noting, the masks demonstrated all must seal to the face of the wearer to be effective, stubble and beards will reduce the protection they provide and a mask fit test should also be considered to ensure the mask selected is effective, not just comfortable.
Thanks, what would be the best mask for putting out a house fire with a fire extinguisher
Which filter would you recommend for demolition work -drywall work- especially when it comes to drywall sanding . Thank you in advance . Great video . Very much appreciated. The pink P100's are great for demo, drywall, woodworking, and more.

So the p95 filters (pink ones) don’t have a cover. The outside of the filters are just exposed. Won’t they get dirty from being left out in the shop?

I have severe allergies to aerosols, but all of the respirators look huge to wear at a grocery store job. Are there any that would protect against aerosol spray like perfume that are more discreet??
How long do those activated charcoal filters stay good out of the package?
I think in tests I've seen on youtube, the P100 3M filter did 99.97 @ .3um. This was better than most competitors in this category; pretty impressive. Obviously if your mask has a bad seal, then that doesn't really matter.
Others might have mentioned this, but you can use the 502 3m adapter to attach the p100 3M filter to any 6000-series cartridge, giving it class-leading particulate filtering also. There's also the 60900 series, which does organics AND p100 filtering as a single unit, as I think mentinoed, but there's several more 3M options that do both organics and dust/particulate. You can even get 3M filters with radioactive particle filtering; the 60928, if worried about a nuclear explosion. The only filter 3M doesn't seem to offer in its consumers cartridge series is a tear-gas filter, but any of the organic filters apparently will do the job just fine still.
Tear gas is a particulate and can be filtered by P100 cartridges, although you'd better have some swim goggles on if all you have is a half-mask respirator. Absolutely way better than nothing.
I'm not sure how long the 3M P100 filters could stand up to tear gas, but considering how affordable and easy to change they are, buy a bunch.
Hello, Thanks for this video, what respirator filters would you suggest for indoor range parcticing (mainly against smoke, and lead I believe)?
No sure. Maybe check out a gun forum to see what they are using. Let me know what you find.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy On gun forums you can't find much on this topic, but most refers to P100 filters (equivalent to P3/FFP3 in France where I live). I think after some other reading that it might be interrsting to have it paired with an "A2" filter that is used for vapors and gaz ... 3M make some called "A2P3"
8:40 - so the pink P100 doesn't work with organic vapors because vapors aren't particles? I'm trying to wrap my head around the difference between an oil particle and organic vapor if they can both be airborne. Maybe fumes from a lacquer, wood stain, or polyurethane are gases and not particles? For woodworking I think the summary is to use an N or P mask for dust, and activated carbon for finishes. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
Which Mask Works best for riding a Bike through heavy traffic?
Very informative with the different respirator types. What are your thoughts on being clean shaved? In OSHA & MSHA workplaces, the workers need to be clean shaved to have a fit test.
I think it is a personal decision.
If you want your respirator to work correctly and protect you then you need to be clean shaven when using a respirator. Otherwise you are putting yourself at risk of breathing in particles and gasses that the respirator would otherwise protect you from. You also need to choose the correct cartridges for the job you are doing. At my job they have respirator fit tests on full face masks. People that weren’t clean shaven or had some stubble would fail the leak test. It doesn’t take much to affect the seal of the masks.
