I won a raffle to jump with Matt at one of the ROR jump champs back in the day, they flagged him in after the jump and instead of heading in the pit he took me on a lap around the actual track. 😀 I was hooked ever since
This was one of the best build vids. Loved the Helton was clear and straight to the point about everything. Props to him knowing what he wants, being able to do it and I hope he and his son put it to the critics.
HAHAHA Holy shit memories. Riverside born and raised 90s kid and I remember when owning a Yota or a ranger made you Hella cool. That was when Crusty Demons came out too. I absolutely miss this days.
I love this! I’m 55 and began working at 4 Wheel Parts in 1988 and you could build a lot with a small budget! Brings back great memories! I built a 83,4wd and 89 Toyota 2wd and those trucks put in work!
You guys forgot to shout out his son who has also been putting in the work to bring off road sim driving to us regular dudes. It’s actually really dope!
This build is awesome. Don’t need big motor, big tires, big shocks to have fun and compete. Seeing a small leaf spring truck is exciting and inspiring.
I had that same 86 4x4 for my first truck. I used to beat the crap out of it on the stock suspension and a set of Rancho 5000s! It was a rough ride alot of the time but it actually smoothed out at higher speeds when the bumps werent too big. I even jumped it a bunch and it never broke! Good times! Have always owned Toyotas since, tough friken vehicles!!
I love this truck! I built my first Prerunner after this truck back in 2012. 1989 Toyota, total chaos front with kings. Deaver 67 rear with kings. And a 22r. It wasn’t quick but it would get to where I wanted smoothly!
Super awesome build & I can't wait to see the finished truck. I like the comment about learning to drive a less powerful truck. When my son was 15 & started autocrossing, he used my Dodge Dakota Sport crew cab. ; ) Guys with BMWs & Porches would ask why we were using the Dakota, my answer was "So my son becomes a better driver & by the way did you notice my son's index time is faster than your index time." 😂 Thank you for sharing.
Holly crap, Greg-Jen and R.O.R... the good old days. I remember going with Greg to go valve Dance Pants shocks. Thanks to Greg, I know how to properly valve my shocks 👍
My brother has this guys twin truck. He’s had it since high school and he’s 45 now. He’s been wrenching on his truck for over 25 years now. Just down the road from Orange in Yorba Linda. Funny to see someone so close from home with the same truck right down to the color lol. If I could only post pics on here you guys would laugh.
I to used to spank most anything out on the trails or in the mud with my ol 22RE powered '83 Yota and always laughed when everyone wanted to see what I was hiding under the hood. I remember being the 1st to later bolt on a turbo on the same 4cyl motor and got a few years out of it running it at 10lbs boost..
You got any 22re engine blocks, that you aren't using in any projects? Looking to replace my block in 94 yoga which had a hole in it when purchased. Heard a lot about these 22re engines so I'm looking forward to getting it going. Awesome build from top to bottom not only a super creative mind but also extremely talented individuals that came together to have a part in a one of a kind build. Great work.
Yo I am buying this gen 3 setup from what I believe was Matt's og sy2 it made its way to alaska so I'll be building my own sy2 soon if ever get down you guys area once it's done I'd be down to show it off
This is one of my favorite builds so far. Something a person could afford

Dang…memories. back when Inland Prerunners just launched and everyone would meet up at Farmer Boys in Riverside and hit the jump. Fun Times!
As I read this im in farmer Boys drive thru oc🤯 what are the odds
HAHAHA Holy shit memories. Riverside born and raised 90s kid and I remember when owning a Yota or a ranger made you Hella cool. That was when Crusty Demons came out too. I absolutely miss this days.
I remember going to that Farmer Boys to watch everyone break their trucks on that jump good times.

The good ole days! 🤘
DR was fun, a bunch of shit talking and club 18 😆

I’ve been bin-watching all these builds. So awesome to see someone finding the best parts to fit a realistic budget. Well built on a proven platform.
Hell yah matt! cant wait to see it done. Glad to be a part of it

This is the most practical pre runner build ever! We need more content on this one!
Ya cause the average Joe can actually afford to build their own
Son rubbing his hands together off camera thinking....Oh yes IT WILL BE MINE!
Can’t wait to see Matt back out racing again! Love this episode! 👍
I'm building a very similar truck right now, hope to see this thing out on the track one day! 22R for life!
I got into prerunners/desert racing right around 2001. So much nostalgia and good memories watching this video. The good ol days. Simpler times haha.

heck ya, Toyota for the win and Helton has always had some of the coolest.
Stoked to see Helton getting back into it. SY2 was a legendary truck.
Watching the progress on his IG is awesome and then to follow up with these videos to get the back story is even better. Thanks guys!
This is fantastic. Such great memories!!! Have fun, Matt!
Awesome build, definitely want to see more of this truck.
Love this build! Keep us updated!👍
This channel is the reason I'm getting into welding, to build beast like these.
The og's haha so cool to see Matt back. Looking forward to see him racing.
Helton is like THE Dezertrangers OG. Sick to see him featured here.
I used to have a poster of that truck jumping
Would be interested to hear a little more of his thoughts on a 2" bump in front vs the previous 4".
Holly crap, Greg-Jen and R.O.R... the good old days. I remember going with Greg to go valve Dance Pants shocks. Thanks to Greg, I know how to properly valve my shocks 👍
Holy shit! I know Matt, family friend. Absolute legend of legends!!
Dude that’s soo bad ass!!! I can’t wait to see this thing in the desert again!!!!
we need a progress report on the build and another episode when its finished
So dope. I gotta dig out the old desert people videos.
That thing is sick! I may not be a Yota fan but I would drive the shit outta that thing! Nicely done and excellent fab work! Great job!!!

That's how to run lwafs with a light car. Spare in the back and fuel as well. Simplicity. I may have old vids or my brother lol
Hell Yea BROTHER!!!!
This is RAD! I wish I had a dad like that 🤙
This guy is so fucking cool. Not holier than thou or preachy he just seems like a regular guy who does cool shit. Mad humble
EPIC VIDEO. these garage builds are so cool
Heck to the yes on this! Love the old yodas, still rock TC on my daily.
It’s like the initial d approach to off-road racing. Yes grasshopper.
22RE baby! That what my first truck had! Damn thing is bulletproof!
Freaking glorious even without swapping in the L-word
Another Great build! Love it !

Wait, wait wait! You do an episode on Matt Helton and don't show some up close mig welds?
Love the ground up build!
His comments from minute 7:20-8:00 says it all. I still believe this today just like I did in the late 90’s
Helton!!!!!! Helton spec!
Matt's a MIG God too!
I remember seeing this truck out in Elsinore back in the day, Crazy…
As a Yota guy, this is freaking awesome!
9:03 keeping the locking hubs you can be the ultimate 2WD troll when this thing smashes past broken down 4x4 v8s on the trails lmao
We are building a 1986 pickup this is awesome video to get some great ideas 💡.
That's going to be a awesome truck
Such build. Putting a stock 2 or 3RZ engine in would be sweet.
This is finally a build I can look off of. Which I can actually afford
Love my 22re, use it for Oregon mud
Yotas rule 🤘🥳it is rewarding driving around v8s with a 22re
The Piece!!!
Exactly the style I want to build my ranger straight old school
Great build !!!!
This episode is straight 🔥🔥
Yo I am buying this gen 3 setup from what I believe was Matt's og sy2 it made its way to alaska so I'll be building my own sy2 soon if ever get down you guys area once it's done I'd be down to show it off

Just more fuel to keep modding my 88 4runner
Where is SY-2 right now?
No longer in existence, he had the chassis recycled.
@@camsamuelson2885 thanks.
Lol i don't see a truck. i see a pipe frame with some king shocks on it
What is that bump stop plate on the upper arm?
You can weld a pad onto the uniball bolt.
I wanna know what he has on top of his UPC uniball bolt?? I need that!!
Never seen that before? Round flat plate with a nut welded to the bottom, chaos has been rocking that for bump strike plate since the beginning haha
@@billhicksmcgee1181 never, I thought of it but didn’t think it’s suffice. But great to know, imma do this
@@TheXbdon11x use 4130 haha and make sure you have solid metal ( no gaps between the nuts). Bent bolts can be a bitch
It’s one long 3/4” bolt. With a piece of .190 4130 plug welded to the bolt head.
MDR....... where's Paul nowadays ?
What gears?

Is there an instagram for him?
