  • Dr. Lustgarten talks about what nuts and seeds he eats and his thoughts on saturated fat, including the difference between saturated fat from vegetable and animal sources.
Dr. Michael Lustgarten is a scientist at the Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston, Massachusetts. His research currently focuses on the role of the gut microbiome and serum metabolome on muscle mass and function in older adults. Dr. Lustgarten is also known for his rigorous n-of-1 health optimization experiments and quantified-self practice, with the goal of maximizing his health and lifespan and also potentially contributing to building a correlated data model for optimizing lifespan interventions for others.

Even phytic acid can have a positive effect, by ridding the body of excess iron. But the way to reduce it in nuts and seeds is to soak them for varying lengths of time (depending on the nut) and then drying out before eating. I find I can assimilate them much more easily this way. Don't ask me how I know.

This shirt clip is full of great information. It is so refreshing to hear an expert say, "Do what works for you," (with the assumption that you are monitoring your biomarkers at appropriate intervals). Far too many healthy aging experts are dogmatic about exact methods and molecules.
The cardiac calcium score is also great advice. Having my score in hand (I took my scan in early December) has been valuable in helping me plan my approach for the new year. The test was not expensive, low risk (non-invasive, and about as much radiation as a dental X-ray), and put a number on my heart health.
Thank you for this series, Richard.

Most aging "experts" are clueless about health in general. This man is at least on the right track.

I always had conspicuously high HDL (with low LDL and TGs), and I used to wonder if it was because I ate a lot of nuts. But after I compared notes with my siblings and cousins, I found out they had the same pattern. So from that I concluded it was probably hereditary.

Thanks again Richard and Dr Lustgarden. Cocoa and coconuts are high in palmitic fatty acid which are thought to contribute to atherosclerosis. Perhaps the overall benefits of eating these whole foods will outweigh the negatives.

That's likely individual. Without saturated fats in my diet, my HDL, LDL, and TC are not where they should be. Including those foods puts them on a path toward closer to optimal.

This series is vital and practical to our health. Thank you both of you! BTW, Dr. Lustgarten didn't answer your question about Macademia, I'm eating tons of them a day, hope it's no problem.

Sorry about that! I let my circulating biomarkers dictate my diet. One of my current experiments involves increasing my MUFA intake, which macadamia nuts contain, so I may include them in the near future. I'm currently focused on other high MUFA-nuts like almonds, peanuts, pecans, and cashews.

If your cholesterol is less than 160 one doesn't need to worry about HDL. Total cholesterol will drop if you don't eat cholesterol and saturated fat. Aerobic exercise is good for raising your percent HDL though. I'm doing the opposite approach with a low fat starch based vegan diet. I eat carbs all day and my a1c is 4.8. Intramyocellular fat from ingested oil causes insulin resistance. So if you lower the fat and oil intake you will thrive on starch. Humans have the highest amylase in the saliva than all of the primates (all are basically vegan except chimps who are 95%) so we evolved to eat starch. I do take krill oil ( i know not vegan) but Im not convinced that there is enough evidence to support it. My CRP is 0.4. I'm a physician and the evidence led me to this path.

Great upload! Olive oil is considered universally to be healthy when replacing carbs it seems. Surprised he did not bring this up but I guess Michael mostly wanted to describe his own regimen (which should perhaps include more olive oil).

I disagree. OO is "healthy" because most people eat nutritionally poor diets, and EVOO has some beneficial phytochemicals. Even better than EVOO is eating whole olives, but I almost never hear that approach!

I don't do any dairy as its linked to prostate and breast cancer. Not good for the lipid profile either.

@ 8 min on Lp(a); This is supposed to be mostly a genetic issue, with diet having only modest influence according to Lipidologist Thomas Dayspring. He suggests its very important to have Lp(a) test done once to confirm your status. It's not normally a marker that needs to be tracked if you're low, as most people are. I'm < 6 mg/dL for example. Michael is right to be getting a calcium scan, but should be looking at the full suite of interventions to lower Lp(a).

Some people read actual peer-reviewed research like Dr. Lustgarten, and some people think they have a PhD from watching youtube videos.
      You're the latter.
