      @@JasonOsbornePhotography do you think we will see any reform in the industry? And will artists who get hot on their own merit start to "get smart" and run their own operations

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  4 роки тому +2

      D Mac unfortunately no because the gate keepers don’t want to change how the business is done because it works for them so well. Artists who get hot on their own merit are far and between because typically a label is needed at some point. But artist can change how much they are taken advantage of with education, knowledge, and patience not willing to sign at the first deal and tiny bit of money they are presented with.

      Jason Osborne I don't even think Hollywood has any deals close to this for there new talent or pro athletes for that matter.There all new stars so why do record company's feel entitled now to what the artists do that have absolutely nothing to do with music.Yes,$$$$ but is it because the Major record company's are a dying breed now?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  6 років тому +2

      Hollywood def has deals that are similar especially after a movie comes out, better believe the studio gets a cut of anything that has to do with the movie, sometime the actor gets no back end payments from DVD sales streaming etc...athletes might not have the league in their pockets when it comes to outside endorsement but usually leagues restrict the public use or wear of certain gear or items due to the contracts you see the league having with endorsers, for example NFL players are only allowed to wear Nike gear and can be fined for wearing anything else on the field. Record companies implemented this because yes they are a dying breed and music doesn't sell the way it used to, so if they invest in an artist they no longer feel that music is what they need a cut from, without them they would argue the artist wouldn't be able to land the other deals outside of music...which can be true in some cases.

    360 deals seem fair to me, if your goals are more in line with mass fame. The Music industry is a business just like any other, it's there to make a profit. Also record labels only cut into revenue from entertainment with a 360 deal, that means income from other sources such as real estate, and investments are not included.

    Whats up! So Ive been researching this question... By singing up with BMI or ASCAP, does that mean you dont own your publishing anymore after registering your music with a P.R.O.?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  7 років тому +4

      Hey, thanks for stopping by...in regards to your question P.R.O's are simply the organizations who go out and look for your publishing money. When you license a song and register with a P.R.O whenever that song is played on the radio, commercials, a juke box in a diner even....the P.R.O's are the organizations that go out and collect that publishing money for you based on the split percentages you put in when first registering the work. So you still own your publishing, they just find the money you're owed for it.

      JS_Vocals I’ve been a producer for over 10 years working with mostly independent artists, interning for Dreamville producer elite for 2 years, I would be wary of signing a 360 with a Indy label. Most Indy labels can’t offer what the big labels can, so unless you’re getting a fat advance from the Indy label I’d steer clear and really pay attention to what the label says they can do for you that you that you can’t do for yourself. I can’t see a reason why Indy labels would need access to your revenue streams unless they are investing heavily into you.

      Jason Osborne So if TDE or Dreamvillve is interested in signing me, stay away from them because they don't have the same type of funding as a major label? But if they were to come to me with 1.5 million or something like that then that's okay depending on my contract?

They also want to a 50/50 on co-publishing and 75/25 split for non co-publishing ( 75 for label and 25 for him). Also, this labels is brand new spearheaded a by a songwriter who was a one hit wonder. Hi jay, this question might come across as a bit of a stupid question but anyway why do they give such big amounts of money out and make it so they can just take it back off you? Isn't that a bit pointless?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  7 років тому +1

      Good question actually, the answer is this...ROI return on Investment, their hopes are that if they can put 250,000 into you as an artist you will bring them back double and sometimes triple that amount during the contract duration. But if you dont hit they shelve you and the funding stops, and once your advance runs out you pretty much are working just to pay back what you owe, then you either get dropped or they give you a even smaller budget to work with as a second try...

    • @brickmansionofficial4249
      @brickmansionofficial4249 7 років тому

      +JayOPro (Musical Medicine) interesting.. So if you hit that target do they continue to support you fully and then the big sums of money become the artists (they can't claim it back)?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  7 років тому

      well it depends on the contract you sign really, in this instance for a 360 deal you could do really well and make the money back that they gave you for an advance, but they still may be entitled to a percentage of your other revenue streams, sometimes that percentage is reduced once the advance has been paid back in full but in other cases its not. The only difference is that the artist will start to see money from album sales where as they dont see a dime from album sales until that advance is made up

    • @brickmansionofficial4249
      @brickmansionofficial4249 7 років тому

      +JayOPro (Musical Medicine) so the artist will only start to be getting paid once they have paid back the label, if the labels are actually just wanting the money back from you couldn't the artist just save as much as the advance and then pay that back?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  7 років тому

      Correction the artist will only get paid from their music once they have paid back the label, they still get paid from touring, merch, endorsements etc...so yeah they could def save up that 250k or how ever much and pay the label back, but typically new artists don't. Seeing how their advance usually is what gets their new life going plus recording costs etc...and a lot of the times the label puts expenses for the artist against them, that amazing video you wanted to shoot in the islands ? Cool, but that cost 80k to make, add that to your tab..

    U Tube star 15 year old Angelina Jordan just signed with Republic Records in November 2020.. Her manager made a public statement that Republic Records promises to do a "Major Universal promotion of Angelina as their top priority new Artist. here it is May 2021 and Republic has not even got her any radio time for her new songs "Million Miles, or 7 Th. Heaven.. She just recently came out with a cover song of Adele's "ALL I ASK" which is fantastic. These video's are only seen on her official channels, and dozens of reactor channels. People are wondering if Republic is holding off on promoting her to save money until her Debut album comes out this summer. What is your opinion as a expert in the music industry?

    • @JasonOsbornePhotography
      @JasonOsbornePhotography  3 роки тому

      In my honest opinion they prob don’t know how to push her currently against the other singers in the same genres that are coming up with poppier songs that can be danced to on tik tok. She’s still fairly new as a artist and with Covid shutting down touring and public appearances they are prob waiting till the country opens up completely so they can get her on the road to be seen in person. Her singles that you listed have decent viewership on UA-cam but nothing that will really make a label go crazy to push her now. The labels are still doing their job besides not having her on radio, they have those songs out and official videos out for them as well, those aren’t cheap.

    360 is only fair these days with the way the game has changed, most of you up and coming artist are stupid and arrogant and broke so just remember that. The competition is also at an all time high so you are better off quitting music and working at Mcdonalds. Less money is being made off sales, most people do not buy these days so 360 is the only way. As an independent now who worked at the big 2, Warner & Universal, we made you fools, we are dropping 250k into you and guess what, personally I don't give advances with my label or commit to a budget, my knowledge, my connects, my producer experience and my audio engineers are your advance and if you have no social media, no songs ever on radio, nothing, you might end up paying me an advance. I have seen so many talented people who had great opportunities walk away from it because they wanted the entire pie, think greedy, get bad advice and they are all working at White Castle burger or living broker than a joker. The game has changed young pups so stay fed or let your career stay dead.
