That is so damn saavy how they re-invested that money into a studio. Of course nowadays you don't need much money to run a home recording studio, but it shows how dedicated they were to being successful and didn't blow they money at that first $30,000 that makes me respect them.

The group I was in had a deal with Motown Records and found out that our Mgr actually had the deal and he kept 90% of our budget and NEVER told us what happened to our deal back in 1991 the music industry is widespread fuckery/mismanagement agreements when your Mgr has power of attorney over the whole process. We had already made two hit songs independently before we even met the Mgr who got us the record deal, he had no remorse nor ethical standards about our business affairs .. long live the B.A.D band and our dream/careers!

Story of the fugees is pretty crazy too. They caught a brick on their first record then for their second they took the smallest possible advance and built a recording studio with a very small production team. That small investment led to the Score. They created generational wealth for themselves.

Sony Bruno exactly and in a saturated market of so many people making music and so little ways to make money making music with the fact that people do not buy records they stream it for free. It makes things extremely difficult.
A lot of people have this idea and fantasy hat they can just make a good record and they will blow up. They have no idea how the business works and how much money, time, investment, timing and connections and luck have to be in perfect alignment to blow up or even level up in your career as an artist.

Pretty amazing that they got to keep the publishing, I’m sure the label still kept the bulk of it though. (Labels giving up 100% of publishing is unheard of.) Only thing about publishing royalties is, unless they have songs in heavy rotation on radio, and songs on tv and in films, those publishing checks will be minuscule. Owning publishing overseas is the way to go, they pay out money for everything.
Despite what some may think it’s extremely difficult to make a living as an independent artist in the US. That’s not to say that labels are always the answer either though.

  • @Sladeofdark
    @Sladeofdark 5 років тому +1

I remember thinking about this alot back in the day when youtube started popping. I grew up with one of these guys in KY. It feels like Nappy missed the independent wave by just a few years, and that part is unfortunate.

Record Companies never have the interest of the artist in mind. They basically stay wealthy off of (especially hip-hop rap artists) the most and they don't even listen to or like the music, its all about controlling the artist until they aren't making money off them anymore, and they tend to change up quickly and bail on the artist. But now we just past a major threshold in the industry several years back and artists took it back by investing in almost every aspect of their work and i believe the rabbit got the gun from here on out!

I am a songwriter who has managed to receive offers for working with one Artist and two Labels which I declined. I however took up on an offer with one of the top three labels in the world after they requested my biography and demo hard-copies last year that dragged me through a five month tango in which they lied to me about 'sending my contract' on several occasions and then recanting as if lost into finally completely ignoring my emails.

People in these comments love to harp on getting a lawyer. What they don't tell you is what type of lawyer to get... Get a lawyer that specializes in the music business. Your cousin's husband who's a criminal lawyer won't work. Every industry has their own rules that change every year, that lawyers then study and specialize in. If your lawyer doesn't study music business law then you will still end up with a shitty contract because you can guarantee the record labels have the best lawyers who know every trick in the book and will finesse you somehow on an edge case. The business is changing fast and your leverage is limited. The goal isn't to get a good contract the first time around. The goal is to fight for what you want, in exchange know how you're getting screwed and leave room in your contact to renegotiate when you have the leverage to get a better contract later on.

If you guys are listening to those before you that went through the same start reading your contracts or get a lawyer to start with. Use your gift of common sense rather than thinking of the big bling around your neck first.

I mean no disrespect, however I thought these guys was going to cause a serious problem for Outkast. NR were coming and they were coming hard. Great sound, lyrical and humble.
The industry is designed to eliminate raw talent in order to brainwash the masses to listen to bull....

I hear what you're saying, but I don't know. They sounded a little too much like Outkast in order to cause a problem for them.

    Don't trust these MOFOS!
But that was a great $30,000 investment because you can rent out to other people.

Universal Records Propaganda! Fucking Hypocrite. So it's better to sign a Universal Records 360 Deal than a Warner Music 360 Deal 😂😂

Nappy roots sucks. It’s music for target commercials. I’ve literally never heard anyone say they listen to nappy roots.
