As informative as this is artists today won't listen. They will do anything for a quick way to the top. Even signing something like this. They'd sign a 720 deal if they had the chance. I agree with the lack of A&R . so now we have so many artist with these assembly line type songs and there's really no staying power for any of them

They dont love music, they love superficial temporary fame and compromising their values. And many will regret it as they get older

    Yes, I am.
I would rather earn my money and invest for my future than to owe money that I can't pay back.

Business people are always the same. They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Fascinating stuff, it seems to me that it's a case of accountants in control. Spreadsheets and creativity do not make a good mix. Thanks Jay.

IMO, you're crazy to sign a 360. The labels have screwed a lot of people for a lot of years, and want to continue to do so. As for Napster, when the labels responded by suing their market base (the fans) they signaled they were divorced from the new reality of digital...and now they're paying the price.

Jackson Miller yeah, I bought a lot of albums because I really liked one or two times. It's...interesting... that the B or even C side tunes on records that dropped 30 and 40 years ago are superior to stuff that's at the top of the charts today...

Jay N Yes, they do. I recently read "Six Figure Musician," whose author quite logically explains that even now there are legitimate reasons to pursue a record contract...but "signer beware!"
I guess artists are going to have to better understand the *business* of music, have access to someone who does, or be ready to clean up the mess if (when) they realize the label has ripped them off.
So maybe a non-360 could be a good thing... but I still don't see much point in a 360 deal beyond putting musicians back under the control of the "suits"...?

I know I'mma get some hate BUT a 360 can work. If the approach of the artist is I am a brand linking up with another brand that can push me higher, or may have other avenues the artists can dip into and thus expand both brands. Sign a 360 deal don't sign away your life and/or your brand. When you leave know what your leaving behind!

Jay your observations ring true! I think we will begin to get out of it using the Artist Management model instead of the 360. Which means a 10-25% of all income to the Management Company who is able to develop and release the artists products digitally, and publish the work at the same time. The old Record Company model will still continue but this will be through deals with vibrant Independent labels and Management with great Talent discovery A&R development skills. Yes, most of these labels were started and run by music people who adjusted their model from the prior decades when they worked under another label. Investors got involved and the people who made the music historically were pushed to the back.
1993 was the year the industry changed.

yes. the music died when the 90s end..just think about it..what legendary acts in any form or genre have you seen since the 90s who can go head to head with classic artists that made music from 1950-1999--i don't see any..exept everyone experimenting with the latest style of music that went commercial.and that is electronic music..i don't see a totally NEW genre that will come..i just don't...it's all a mixture of music that has already existed...and record companies had a major influence on the development of music after they did not prepair for napster and downloading the way thay should have

Record company execs don't know art if it slapped them in the face. They know trends and what to look for to better profit themselves. Thats all.

And this is why they need catchy junk music on the radio instead of art. They don’t care about quality. Just make a quick stupid hit and they get rich.

    John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
    Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
do not sell your soul to satan repent and follow Jesus Christ
