I went on a trip to Sulawesi way back in college, like 25 years ago. One of my favorite islands in Indonesia, so many hidden gems. My college roommate is half Minahasa (people from North Sulawesi) and she would get food packages from her grandma. Many times it was bat meat in bamboo shoots 😁 She said the Minahasa people are known to eat anything. She’s eaten snake, crocodile, bat and wild pig meat. I forgot if she’s eaten dog meat, she might’ve but probably didn’t want to confess 😅 PS: i love how you take care of your mom. ❤
I’m so glad you got to see the tarsiers! North Sulawesi is definitely the place for it. Your mom looks like she had a great time-I’m happy for her! As for the Tomohon extreme market, yeah, people go there mostly for the shock factor. That said, Minahasans and other ethnic groups in North Sulawesi do eat things like dogs, cats, bats, pythons, and forest rats. In fact, the main reason dog meat isn’t common across Indonesia is because it’s a Muslim-majority country, and Islam forbids eating dogs (or even touching them as they’re seen as unclean). But historically, people all over the islands did eat dogs before Islam became widespread, so in regions where Islam isn’t the dominant religion, the practice still exists. Personally, I wouldn’t eat them-I see dogs and cats as pets. But I think it’s hypocritical for Westerners to get upset about it, since cultural views on animals vary so much around the world. After all, chickens, cows, and pigs are intelligent and make great pets too, but people don’t think twice about eating them! Also, I’m surprised you still think alcohol is illegal in Indonesia! Yes, it’s regulated, but definitely not banned. Traditional drinks like palm wine and rice wine are pretty common, even in Muslim-majority areas, since they’re tied to local traditions. Authorities tend to look the other way when it comes to these, even though technically they’re supposed to be regulated as well, just like the commercial ones you’d find in liquor stores and bars.
Thank you for the information about the Tomohon market and cultural differences! 😊 I’m also making this video to educate people about Indonesia and ask sometimes questions maybe others like to know more information about. I enjoy a Bintang almost everywhere we go in Indonesia 😊🍻 Thanks again!
As a Manadonese myself, I'm really touched with you and mama Lulu appreciation about our people's smile and friendliness. Some people considers it trivial and meaningless...but actually it's a big culture here to always be kind one another...in some occations, you can even enter someone's house randomly and they will offer to feed you anything from their kitchen even though they are poor, and even force you to eat it before leaving, as a form of kindness to one another... Thank you Chai and mama Lulu...🥰
Wow, really 17,000 islands? That's amaxing. I knew Indonesia had a lot of them but that is a mind boggling number. I wonder how are smaller than a soccer field? It is great to see you hanging out with your mom. Take care friend.
Wow !North Sulawesi is absolutely splendid🤩👍Fantastic video with exciting explorings and views Chai with Mama Lulu ! Great guides to bring you to special beautiful spots in the Rain Forest ! Btw.I was very surprised when you showed unexpected animals at the market, but it is how their life is, we cannot compare with our customs...Happy travel to you both Champs !❤
Hi, I am living in Manado but I never been Tangkoko forest. Thanks for your video. Nice video and I really enjoy watching your video. Proud to the local people who keeping the forest with the animals. Blessed you.

The Cinnamon cake/Kue Cucur sounds tasty. Mount Mahawu looks beautiful. The North Celebes Palmwine/Cap Tikus taste good apparently. Actually you can buy it in the airport. Great shot of the Celebes Blacl Crested macaques. Next time maybe you can spend more time in Bunaken. The underwater scenery there was amazing.
go to Ambon and Banda Neira, Maluku province, there are many descendants and historical traces of the Dutch heritage there, buildings, music, dance, culture, etc..
Lovely ❤ video Chai, I must say very interesting till the very end, Beautiful Place , thank you so much for this long video with of course mama Lulu, I wish you skipped the meat section anyway it is what it is lot's of love ❤💕
Tangkoko🤔 I have a strange story about that place🤣🤣In 1997 my father was a driver who often took tourists from Europe to visit Tangkoko, somehow I was born with blue eyes, I have DNA from my biological father and mother but in our family no one has blue eyes 🤣🤣
When you go to bali, you may like to colaborate with dutch youtubers that have been living in bali for several years. Janine Freuling and Gypsy in Sneakers 😀 just an info
To be fair, people were going to Tomohon market to have that shocking experience since the meat sections were highly unusual for most of people's standards. And the other thing is, sure enough Cap Tikus were the most famous liquor you can get in Manado just like Arak in Bali, but be careful with the alcohol contents that can be as high as 45% since it were really packs a punch that cames bit later than most of alcohols.
Holy smokes, having watched this maybe Donald Trump's famous call of 'they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats, they're eating your pets relative to the Haitian people in the US could be true. Still saw the severed dog heads in the video Chai and that was enough for me. 🤣🤮 Having seen that I think I'd be sticking to either vegetarian dishes or anything that consists of chicken as protein. This is a fantastic video though, fabulous drone and camera work. Lovely walks around beautiful county side. Great to see you fine tuning the drone skills mate. It's been a while. Brilliant work champ !! 🤩
Sorry for the shock footage! I’ve tried to blur out most of it so it was not so straight in your face 😅 man, it was such a beautiful experience with Mama Loulou 🥰 thanks for being part of our journey Steven! ❤️

Dog illegal 😢 I thought it should also from the mindset
Maybe all meat will be illegal some day 🤷♂️
I think you should show everything in the camera. It is to show that you dont judge by your standards and the rêspect to other cultures.
I also respect the people who find it disgusting what is sold as this market. I try to be respectful to everyone 🙏
