    The love that Mama Lulu showed towards her birthplace reminds me about why many of our football national team players decided to represent Indonesia. More than half of the squad are half Dutch-half Indo, and their grandparents left the country for similar reason as Mama Lulu's. It's basically their parents/grandparents who wanted them to represent Indonesia, and they agreed because of that connection. And somehow I believe, people with similar background as Mama Lulu love this country more than the Indonesians themselves

      @Mycsonl Місяць тому +2

      Yes, I strongly agree that those who are naturalized in the Indonesian national team must also be their parents or grandparents very proud of their grandchildren defending Indonesia....

    Thanks for sharing Bandung with is. A very interesting place, plenty to do and see. It is certainly very evident with the architecture the influence that the Dutch had leading up to 1945. Great stuff Chai 🤩

    At @8:13 he says "Sukarno-Hatta, our first president, held a conference here [in Bandung]". I have heard many foreigners make the mistake of thinking that Sukarno-Hatta was one person, but first time hearing a local say it. Sukarno was the president, Mohammad Hatta was the vice-president, and Sukarno-Hatta is an airport.

    Bandung was to become the new capital of the Dutch East Indies, the plans were ready. This was because Batavia was too humid and the city was already sinking. The new parliament and government buildings were ready to be built. However, due to the Second World War, it did not go ahead. The only building that was built is the current Gedung Sate.
    Bandung was popular with the Europeans because of the cooler climate.
    But after the independence not everyone wanted to belong to the Republic of Indonesia at first, such as Aceh, the Moluccas, New Guinea, eastern areas of Indonesia, Chinese minorities, etc.
    But Sukarno hated the Dutch so much that he wanted an Indonesia that included the size of the Dutch East Indies. Incidentally, the plan would be that Dutch New Guinea would become the new country for the exiled Indos, European diaspora and Moluccans because the Netherlands did not want these population groups at first. Ultimately, between 1950 and 1964, some 350,000 people migrated to the Netherlands, the majority being Indos (mixed races), Moluccans, Chinese and others. Currently, there are almost 2 million people of Indonesian descent living in the Netherlands, including the Surinamese Javanese community.

    Bagusnya Indonesia bisa merdeka tapi buruknya adalah Indonesia tidak memberi kesempatan kepada NL untuk mengajari negara baru (saat itu) tentang bagaimana menjalankan sebuah negara, pemerintahan, administrasi, hukum yang baik and so on. Jadilah negara baru itu kini menjadi sangat carut marut disemua aspek.

    Hi Chai, thank you for your simpathy and empathy for Indonesia independence.
    Let me add the meat on your history during the exile of Netherlands went back to Netherlands in 1943 - 1948, not only due to Sukarno or Indonesia independence movement. But also 1 big factor came during those years that you and many others frequently forgot was, Japan assault on the corner of each nation in South East Asia.
    What Japan troops did specially to women, be it Netherlands, Europeans, Indonesians, was disgusting and cruel, which was Collective rape and other Sexual assault for their soldiers in Indonesia. So many women, especially European decendants were leaving Indonesia avoiding Japan. Pls google word "Jugun Ianfu". I hope I spelled it correctly.
    This Japan factors for my personal opinion, was the main factor of Blijvers left Indonesia.
    Better you do your own research on this Japan factor, I am not historian my self, only luckies to read some books during my youth.

      @Chai_Travel yes you are right that many islands were colonized by the dutch, but once again 300 years is a hyperbole... popularized by Sukarno, a Javanese who wanted other islands to feel the same fate so as to create the reality of Indonesianness... but once again 300 years is a big mistake... on other islands there is a big sentiment in this matter, the result of the dogmatization of 300 years of colonization is the inferiority complex that exists on the island of Java.... the dutch colonization of sumatra as a whole and kalimantan only happened in the 20th century, no more than 40 years. maybe you are half-Dutch and half-American.... but don't equate everything.... the narrative of 300 years of colonization throughout Indonesia is a great disgrace, for other regions that were never colonized for that long
