Definitely one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced. Elkie deserved far more success. What a voice. Awesome tone, edgy, soulful and rocky all in one.
Anyone who has ever seen this lady sing live will agree that she sounds exactly the same live as on a studio recording !!! That is the mark of a real singer !!! 💕💕💕💕
i'm 37 years old. many things in my life have changed, my love for music hasn't, this song is one of the reasons why. great lyrics amazing vocals. hope this stays on you tube
I`ve never been a huge fan of this song but remember Elkie singing it at the first concert of hers (on the Pearls II tour) that I went to .She performed it really well and with minimal musical backing ..mostly with only her percussionist at the time - Duncan Kinnel . He actually came forward and sat with his legs dangling over the front of the stage playing a small set of Tom-Tom drums. It was one of the most restrained songs of the concert that night as Elk belted out many great rocking numbers in the show with the volume turned up to eleven. By the end of the show I was a confirmed Elk nut and have seen her dozens of times in concert over the years. If you still have an old VHS player try finding a copy of "Pearls the Video Show" ..live concert footage recorded during the tour aat Kingston upon Hull.
One of the greatest singers the UK has ever produced, it's a disgrace that Elkie didn't have more success, she is head and shoulders above Adele and other so called superstars.
Yes no words can describe and I have to say, one of the greatest modern compositions and settings in history. With so few words, the song tells it all.
I feel so lucky and joyful to have the pleasure to watch one of your concert in Stoke-on-Trent some years back it is just Beautiful beautiful voices you have , and is always a joy listening to your performance .... Thank you x
When I first heard this song back in the days when life was so much simpler and people were fun, I really really liked it. Now, today as I listen to this beautfully crafted song I wonder where those wonderful days have gone ?
I agree - I so dearly wish that she could be as popular as Adele. There are so many other outstanding talents in British music who have been unjustly overlooked: Colin Blunstone, Judie Tzuke, Renaissance, Rab Noakes and especially Gallagher and Lyle.
YOU ALL ARE RIGHT ON...NEVER HEARD OF HER...BUT MAN!!.... SHE IS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THESE SO CALLED SINGERS OF TODAY......WAY ABOVE... WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE OF HER.
The genius (whoever he/she was) of putting the flute in close harmony with Elsie's fabulous voice deserves praise as much as Elsie's fantastic voice. Definitely a better version than Rod's.
Nice ! , but Rod Stewart wrote it along with Ronnie Wood and 'that' is the better version in my opinion , with great instrumental backing . But she does a fine version .
The girl done a very good rendition of rods classic, liking rod myself i was impressed with her first hit "pearls a singer" the raspiness & power of her voice was amazing. I find it ironic that rod did a faces version of oh la la with the cors & the music arrangement is very similar to elkies gasoline alley?
Elkie Brooks sings with great passion, if you like Rod who is not a great singer . then you won't appreciate the great voice of Elkie Brooks.Guess you try too hard to be to know it all.
@567bocaj Ridiculous comment. Elkie is a fantastic singer and I doubt that Rod Stewart worried that she did a better cover than his own version. Do you think nobody should ever cover a song? Listen to Eva Cassidy singing Sting's "Fields of Gold" if you do and then tell me you think covers are bad.
not bad the voice compared with all the synthetics you hear nowerdays, but.....the music in the background could come from christmas banquet backgroundmusician. Or from the KellyFamily singing halleluya ! No gas, no alley, no dirt, no passion, no tension....Nothing against Elie, but......Rod and Ron make the race in this alley! At least when they were young and hungry....
@aardvaarkisgood Better my arse... NO one sings like Rod.. not even Mick.. mind you I'd like to hear Mick take a crack at a song like this.. or even Robert , I can even imagine Jimmy gettng a mandolin and having a go at such a cover but no-one does it better than Rod and Ron!!!
Definitely one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced. Elkie deserved far more success. What a voice. Awesome tone, edgy, soulful and rocky all in one.
Frankie Roma Novak beautiful.
Not even in the top 1,000,000
Anyone who has ever seen this lady sing live will agree that she sounds exactly the same live as on a studio recording !!! That is the mark of a real singer !!! 💕💕💕💕
Yes I have seen Elkie twice in 2003 & 2004 and I can confirm she is actually better than the studio take to my ears
Yes i saw a live show - it was great !
@@gillhargrove6807 I’ve seen her live many times and if she ever tours again I will be there !!! 💕💕💕💕🇬🇧

I saw her last night. What a voice, what a talent and even better live than recorded.

Yes no words can describe and I have to say, one of the greatest modern compositions and settings in history. With so few words, the song tells it all.

That was super-nice. Always loved Elkie, there were few to equal her--then she disappeared--sadly!!
She hasn't disappeared, she was touring untill Covid19 stopped that, a new album to be released on the 7th January 2021
She was on The Morning Show this week . Being interviewed and singing. Fantastic.
Been a fan since seeing her with Vinegar Joe. Probably one of the best singers ever. And a lovely lady too.
Perfect

Have Elkie Brooks and Rod Stewart ever dueted on this live i wonder ?
No they haven’t.
Elike is just the best
Heard Rod Stewart singing this earlier, it was diabolical. No one comes close to this version.
Rod did write the song though.
Love Rod’s original, make sure you hear the studio version
Love this version, great voice.
@@modelsteamers671 YES ! -- He wrote it along with Ronnie Wood .

she has that ruff voice like Rod Stewart which makes it good for this song.
This is great, but I was hoping it was the Hollies tune by the same name.
Ellie.
ELKIE

This is a voice last seen with the likes of Fitzgerald and Halliday
A FORGOTTEN TREASURE

Can someone synch the sound and video please...
@RAIDERWIZARD88 Really singing it. What is Elkie doing if she is NOT singing . helloooooo. Elkie has a much better and versatile voice.
She never got the reconiton she deserves
a better version than rod
Ellie is amazing, but a little bit of kudos should go to Rod and Ronnie
@567bocaj Elkie Brooks has a much better voice than Rod Stewart. He sounds like he has cronic constibation.
