2018 I was 18 years old, I went with my mum, dad, grandma and my little brother, elkie performed in my local town hall, she was 71 and she danced and sang her little heart out like she was in her 20s. 1000% one of my favourite memories and one of the best performances I’ve ever seen

My father's favorite song. Tears have run through my face when I found this music on a cd inserted on his car system. It's been almost 10 months since my father passed away, too soon for a good and kind man. Still giving me goosebumps every time I hear this. Thank you, Elkie Brooks, for your gentle tone and for this lovely song.
Almost 80 now, still touring. Started out with Vinegar Joe, a full on rock band. Still got the attitude, even with more MOR material. Really good live.
When this was released in 1977 it was a massive hit. It wasn't underated at all. It migh have only reached #8 in the UK back then but the charts were very different. That was a big hit.
Ellie totally underrated. What a voice and talent. Loved her voice played her records in the record shop I worked in. Back in the 70 's. Those were the days.
Oh .....isn't she wonderful darling Ellkie.......I used to love her in Vinegar Joe.......remember them...Robert Palmer too......just breathtaking music ......xxxxx
Elkie was like a combination of those three, who were all great in their own right. Bonnie Tyler was underrated too. Like Elkie, she didn't fit the Beeb's TOTP mentality.@@johnjackson8692
I absolutely love this song. Elkie Brookes was one of the greatest blues singers of our generation and sadly underated. The last bit where she gets all funky is my favorite and the Black guy on the piano just set the whole song on fire. 🔥 😍
Saw this lady in concert in the early eighties. She is tiny with a booming voice that causes vibrations in your chest.Totally unique talent, the hairs on the back of my neck and goosebumps continued for the duration of the concert.Very powerful singer with strong stage performance.Fifty year career ,fabulous!
I love these British female vocalists, the likes of Elkie, Barbara Dickson etc, who came to prominence in the 70s/80s. I always want to imagine they still live louche, hippy-ish lifestyles, live in remote cottages where the rooms are a fug of joss-stick and are full of dream catchers and paper flowers etc. And they're always barefoot in boho flowing dresses. In reality they no doubt go to Tesco in baggy joggers and worry about the leccy bill like the rest of us.
Oh my heart. We used to turn the volume up at parties, everyone would sing and swing their sexy dance moves. Great memories this beautiful song evokes all the time.
i totally agree the first part , electric panio bass guitar and drums the second part a six string guitar comes in and the bridge a pedal steel guitar so it all builds up
Happy Birthday Elkie Brooks born on February 25, 1945. She is an English rock, blues and jazz singer. She was a vocalist with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later became a solo artist. She gained her biggest success in the late 1970's and 1980's, releasing 13 UK Top 75 singles, and reached the top ten with Pearl's a Singer, Sunshine After the Rain and the title track of the album No More the Fool. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkie_Brooks
Found this comment from the bassist - bandbase2 9 years ago I played bass on Elkie's version. Leiber and Stoller produced it.This song was originally written by Dino and Sembello only. Leiber and Stoller added a bridge section in 1976 for Elkie's version. The gospel part at the end of Elkie's version was added by the band spontaneously in the studio. Thanks for posting this!
I remember buying that album aged 12. That's giving my age away though. Cracking album. See what happens when you are looking up house prices in Cumbria? Eventually led me to Ms Brooks!
Going through my old records and found hers, had forgotten how much I liked her. Love her singing this, Fool If You Think It's Over and Don't Cry Out Loud. She had lots of great songs,
I have just discovered this Lady and this was by accidental veiwing "Finding Your Feet" movie. What a pity that late. What a luck I found her! Amazing!
I try not to use the statement/saying "Jesus wept", but 'JESUS WEPT'! It really doesn't get much better than this! You go Elkie in such a short and epic song you really moved the listeners. EVERY TIME! N.B even my cat is doing jazz hands 🙀😸🙀

Technically - I think this may be one of the greatest songs ever written/performed. Genius.
You're probably right ❤
Damn good for sure.

No backing dancers prancing about. Just 100% talent what a voice.
In the UK we have so many awesome lady singers that are underrated. The world should realise how good they really are.
In the uk I’d like the queen to die
Ain’t wrong mate, go to the punk days too, X-ray specs polystyrene was great
she is not underrated at all

A classic gem from Elkie's best album (2 Days Away) from 1977, they don't make songs like this anymore.
